  • I have limited experience painting with a Hake brush, but that's about to change. In this extended video, you'll not only have more to watch while sheltering at home but I'll do two spontaneous demos with a Hake, show you a variety of Hakes that I'm trying and tell you about what I've discovered while using them.

As I said in an earlier comment, it is 2024. I have been watching these videos in sequence from the beginning. All through the 2019 videos, I have known (hindsight obviously) that March 2020 and lockdown were coming. It has been a strange experience, a form of time travel. This is the first video that Steve has spoken of what we then were calling the Corona virus. As I listened, with the perspective of four years, and the grace of having not gotten the virus (grace and super precautions!), I teared up as I heard what Steve had to say. The encouragement, the warmth, the caring, the understanding. I didn’t know, in 2020, that my brother would die from COVID in 2022. None of us knew how many we’d lose. I need the compassion and gentleness that I hear in this video as much today as I ever did. Thank you Steve, for being the person you are. Oh - and in honor of Reese, I’d have named Graham, Peanut! Sorry, Graham, but you are little!

I recently stumbled across your channel, and I have been binge watching. I have been water color painting, on and off, for the past 50+ years as a hobby, an escape from my high stress job drafting. Now that I am retired, you offer a whole new perspective into a world of artistic expression; I really appreciate it.

This popped up on my UA-cam again. I can't believe I watched this the first time round. God dragged me across UA-cam to a great pastor (Chris Rosebrough)whose videos He used to open my eyes and at the same time He introduced me to your videos. There were days I needed to see those verses at the end of every video. Thanks for your hard work, it's helped me develop my skills a lot.

Hooley Dooley- That's an amazing collection of Hake brushes! I love watching you paint your landscapes. 'Big to small, big to small'- is so important. You remind me of a drawing teacher of mine saying over and over, 'Broad to specific, always work broad to specific'. Thanks so much for all of the useful information Steve. Stay safe and well.

Glad to learn about « Hake » brushes … did not know that was how they were called.
I noticed that You have refined artistic hands - quite pleasant to look at.
After all, you have been / remain a designer-illustrator with a 30 year career.

We in Italy are very affected by this problem, the solution to overcome certain days is precisely what you have indicated to us. Take advantage of the opportunity to stay at home to engage in activities that we generally don't have time to do. We seek the best from any eventuality! Thanks again Steve

    Hello from Italy, Steve:
Love your videos and have learned so much...Thank you! I was given a hake from my Aunt who is an artist, but until now haven't know how to use except as a wash brush, so this was so valuable. My husband and I retired to central Italy, some years ago. This is a beautiful country full of beautiful kind people and I want to paint it all. Most Italians have been very diligent , cautious and have tried to help each other, so we feel very safe here. The Italian quarantine is not finished until the first week of May (unless they decided to continue it), but banks and some other businesses are opening on a limited basis this week. Our numbers are continuing to drop daily....because we have followed the rules and stayed home. Yes, folks there is a an end coming, but hang in there and be smart, wise, and stay informed. No better way to spend this time than to practice watercolors and hone your skills with Steve. In the meantime, I have included a video by an Italian pop artist Roby Santini, The Song title is Andra Tutto Bene, which means everything will be good or fine...hope you enjoy it. He made it from home. ua-cam.com/video/fVOKUI5T-fY/v-deo.html Stay well everyone

I bought one of these brushes about a year ago and found it so difficult to use because of the amount of water it holds that I haven't used it more than once or twice. I found this video really very interesting and love the blending effect you got there to make the background look misty. I love that!
I really appreciate the time you've taken to create a longer video in this time. I live in Northern Italy and it's a really scary time. Watching videos like yours in this time helps a lot to take my mind off the reality of the situation all around me.Thanks a lot for your great quality content Steve!

Dear Steve, Thank you so much for all you are doing and I thank God for your life. I am a hobby watercolour painter recently turned to acrylic and without your videos I don't think i would be going through the pandemic as easy as I am, although tested positive in December along with my whole household we came out of it all clear so thank God for that to. I was only introduced to art in 2011 just 2 years after retiring and it was the saving of me. Now at 77 yrs old I find myself with a whole new life. I have used many tutorial sites and there are many but since I found yours it has become my main goto site for art help but also for relaxing. I live in Ireland just north of Dublin and find it great that I can go all the way to yours without moving from my chair. I liked what you said about keeping the comments clear of politics and other annoying subjects. Be Happy, Be Arty and pray to God. God Bless you. Sorry for the longwinded post

We started staying as isolated as possible about a week and a half ago, and among other things we do to keep busy and interested, is to spend extra time in our livingroom-turned-art-studio painting. This Mind of Watercolour channel is my favourite art channel, and I have been looking daily for the latest video - boy, was I ever thrilled to see it posted this morning. And hake brushes are something I have not been able to get the hang of, so this particular topic is doubly welcome. Thanks so much for brightening our lives with your videos - keep them coming!

Thank you, Steve for your upbeat words of encouragement. Most of the you tube artists I follow are being so very generous offering additional or longer videos. The art world really comes together in times like these. I enjoyed your extra long video....I always have enjoyed any videos you offer....always learn something. I have one, 2" Hake brush by Richeson. It keeps a nice chiseled edge. I
guess I'm going to have a try at making a landscape with it. If it doesn't work out, it's okay; at least it will keep me occupied.
God bless you and your family and stay safe.

Being at home is no struggle as I grew up entertaining myself and keeping busy so it feels no different to do so now. All I've been hearing is this virus and I'm with you Steve, let's all think happy and positive, work together on the problem and be smart about it. The last 6 years have been difficult so I'm anxious to recover and find joy in life again through art and creativity. It's the best way to pull out of a funk and you helped look in new directions for inspiration and ideas on how to go about this, so thanks for that. It's fun watching you work outside your comfort zone too. Old dog be danged, you've got this down and you wear it well. ❤️

Knowing schools were gearing up to close here in Minnesota (I'm a teacher in a tiny NW MN town) and I'd have a fair amount of free time, I stopped by my nearest art supply store during my last big supply run and finally bought a pad of Arches paper, even though I had half a pad of Strathmore 300 still on my shelf. I'm a pretty raw beginner and last fall I just started putting the paint I could afford on paper my kids had left over from a school project.
Wow, are you ever right about 100% cotton paper. I had a blast swatching my (student grade) colors, experimenting with washes and using WAY more water than I'm used to. I even pulled out a sheet of Strathmore and did the same thing so that I could really see a good comparison. I'm so excited to keep working on that Arches to see what I can do!

Watch JOE MENZA use a hake brush. He's only been painting for about 3 years, and uses a limited palette. I ordered Ron Ranson brushes a few weeks ago. I'm praying that during this time ppl start to really enjoy "family time". I'm a retired RN who is very compromised, BUT I plan on visiting my 2 young granddaughters by sitting outside..keeping distance..and just enjoy watching them do all the goofy things Lil ones do. I'm going to visit all my kids this way. It's amazing how creative humans are right now. Utube has great ideas for how to entertain kids. As an RN I never panic.. just remember that we are all on this new journey together, and with common sense..we WILL get through this. TY Steve for this video..everybody just needs to breath. Us painters now have extra time to paint..so enjoy, relax, and let watercoloring b your escape.

I live close by canada also so when I hear hockey my ears perked up love hickey🏒, I'm just beginning my art journey and I'm taking a lot of tutorials I've made a bad$ 20 choice by buying acrylic brushes in set thinking there was no difference learn the hardway.. 😂then I found that Anne kerns video she only uses three brushes one was a hake brush so if your on a tight budget for your art journey her videos are some good learning videos... I quite enjoy the mind of watercolor channel also...sometimes i get a bit overwhelmed by info due to being a beginner but just trying to buy the right few brushes for my income without making anymore finical mistakes...stay safe.. love Canada wish i could visit again..mikelle newyork mom👩‍🎨🎨😷👋

Thank goodness! She was probably younger than I am but with totally white hair same as me. On the drive home, it came to me how fortunate I am that I can follow the stay at home order and not have to get out and work during this time and so I'm feeling a little put out with myself now for the feelings I had. Thanks for the encouragement at the beginning of this video to be positive--hopefully, we are on our way to healing. I am grateful to have videos like yours to occupy myself and learn to paint more effectively. We are so fortunate to have our interest in art during this time (and at any time).

During this time of anxiety we have more opportunity to learn and experiment with new brushes and ideas . we in the UK are thinking and praying for you all . Thank you Steve for helping us to take our minds off this time and giving us encouragement . I am in the age group which is in the danger zone and being diabetic does not help . But my painting and listening to you ,helps me greatly .May our Lord bless you and all your loved ones and keep you safe

GOD BLESS YOU STEVE! You really have been a huge positive in my life & I want to thank you. I did very little watercolor in college but hadn't done any for about 15yrs. Came back to wc this year (just pre-CV). Internet & a smart phone are new to me too. I'm 65 & retired from being a nurse assistant only because I was diagnosed with cancer 2 1/2 years ago.
I'm loving wc but am not always "up to" painting. Your videos make me feel like I'm still being productive. I usually take notes even. I love your openness about everything. I'm learning a lot from you. You are a true blessing in my life 😁
Again, I thank you & may our LORD continue to bless you in every way❣

Its nice to go back and review your videos. I have learned so much from you. When I look back, I can see how much I've grown since I first dipped my toe in watercolor. It was very scary but thanks to you and others like you, I have learned a lot and grown immensely. Thank you and God bless you. I appreciate your channel so much!

I know I'm late to the game and all since this was done a year ago but I just wanted to say thank you for your talk in the beginning. You were right on the money. I want my art and Passions to chase away all my demons not bring them to my doorstep. Thank you so much and I appreciate you and wish you well. Whoever reads this know that you are loved.

What I love from this video is to see the way you learn from yourself, you teach to yourself, without fear nor expectations, only freely paint and see what's going to happen. Thanks Teacher for your always warm presence. Light to all, my Minders friends ✨✨✨

thank you Steve for doing what you do! helping us forge through the drudgery of modern life with a splash of color, a touch of contrast, plenty of light to balance out the darkness, and keeping a positive outlook upon it all. Not to mention, for providing an example of how to face the unknown, the untried and untested with bravery and an open heart.

I love watching Steve Cronin's channel--I can't get myself to go completely in that direction, but I've learned a lot in any case. I mostly just use my hake brushes for wetting the paper down, but I find using my other large flats (1" on up) to be a really good way to keep myself focused on larger shapes and overall composition, though lately I'm trying to do that more in the spirit of Frank Francese and Frank Webb.
Thanks for being a positive presence in the midst of all the craziness these days--I haven't exhausted my introverted comfort in sheltering at home yet, but I'll be keeping my asthmatic self isolated for a long time, and it helps to know I can check in with a familiar face here every week. :)

You know what? THIS IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE. I am watching this on a Sunday. I was lucky enough to have had 3 days off of work which is HUGE by this time, because I‘m a medical doctor in Germany I got these days off for caring for my child before I go on a 2-week-shift to my clinic. Sooo value your authentic commentary. You seem to be "learning" along with us. When I reviewed the few Ron Ranson's UA-cam videos I was attracted to his dry brush with the hake and he is using the side of the bristles as opposed to the tips.

I am choosing to focus on things I can control, including my thoughts. So I'm staying positive and hopeful during this rather scary time. And just as importantly, I'm focusing on creating beauty and having fun by painting, cooking, reading, and playing in thre dirt (weeding). Creating positive energy!
    Sending you all best wishes!
    Be well.

Tried a flowery field landscape... sure requires paying more attention to the amount of water (or lack thereof) in the brush! Either removed too much paint or added too much! Lol! Gave a much smoother feel of the end product though. I will need to try again. I have the 2nd size like yours on the right. Very nice!
