I didn't know they had stab proof vests for police dogs. I have found my new mission of giving. Through my pet grooming business, I'm going to ask people if they would be willing to donate to a fund for stab proof vests. I'll also be donating money from my company to help these amazing dogs. And if I can give the handler a little peace of mind that his 4 legged partner will be safer, I'm all in. I'm a retired dog handler and I would never (nor should any handler) release my dog on a suspect that is KNOWN to have a knife in their possession. He's already armed...deal with it accordingly and without putting my dog in danger unnecessarily. In fact, most departments have policies that prohibited releasing a dog in situations like that.
Let me edit this to reiterate something for the smooth brained among us. I said, and I quote, "putting my dog in danger UNNECESSARILY." That implies, as is the case in this video, there are a number of other ways to handle this situation WITHOUT releasing the dog. Of course, if it came down to using the dog or a human would imminently lose their life, then yes, absolutely use the dog to its fullest potential. That said, the suspect was outside, away from innocent civilians, and most importantly, surrounded by law enforcement officers with what appearsto be the finest equipment and vehicles available. And not just normal beat cops but SWAT officers that are specifically trained to deal with above average threats. I believe a knife weilding oxygen-thief falls well within the realm of their capabilities. If not, and trust me when I say this, a working dog is not going to fix their issues.

As the owner of 2 Belgian Malenois, I can tell you, yes, the dog here [same breed as mine] was eager to work. BUT, dogs do NOT understand that in the line of their work, they can be injured or killed. So there is no reason for the dog to think of his own safety, until he has been shot or stabbed and survived, after which, many K9s have to be retired because of PTSD and reluctance to be injured.

Seriously so sick and tired of seeing this. A dog triggers your fight or flight. Asking someone not to defend themselves on a base instinct especially on drugs is just disgusting.
And I'm not even gonna get into the harm k9s do to the public. It's immense. 80% false alert rate.
Hitting the wrong targets, refusing to come off bites.
      Ect.
If my dog won't let someone go, the cops shoot it.

And yes, I have a good reason to hate police dogs, I was attacked as a child by a "retired" service animal. I had to SUE to see it killed.

I get your point but here in the UK we have "people" who own bull breeds as a status symbol. What they fail to realise is these dogs are powerful and without training can be lethal. Especially when there are children around. I've witnessed a thug with a Staffordshire cross Pitbull threatening his girlfriend (with a toddler in tow) threatening to set the dog on her. Outside a pub during the day in the middle of the week. The dog is blameless but the so called owner had little or no control. He just thought he looked hard and no-one would mess with him. Well the police have a tough decision here. Take the owner down, the dog (which will end up in a shelter because it's never been socialised or trained) or both. Dogs don't kill people, their owners do.

A couple of weeks ago I witnessed an event I would never have any idea about had it not happened across the street from where I work. An emergency Vet's office across the street but of course it's not just for emergencies.
On this particular morning, a few dozen workers and I were trying to figure out WTF was happening across the street... so many police cars, marked and unmarked lights flashing but no sirens at all. The odd thing was, they weren't all from the surrounding area as one car was from 3 counties away (a good 60 miles). No banks or businesses of any interest in the area (a business park), so it was a great deal of speculation on our part when one of the youngest employees noted balloons on one of the cars and "figured" they must be putting a K-9 down.
You can imagine the sadness that filled a once excited room of "is there going to be a shootout" as we all realized this is what in fact what was happening.
