My family ran independent cinemas, so growing up, I'd seen a lot of great films already up till that point (I was 11), but when I saw this film I was utterly blown away and profoundly moved by it.
It was as I was leaving the screen that I realised I wanted to make films, because I wanted to be able to make other people feel the way I did in that moment. It's a moment I will never forget.
I immediately sat through it again and then once again the next day after school. If anyone gets the chance, I encourage you to watch the four-hour directors cut.

One of finest american films ever made; also, one of the most patriotic, because it acknowledges that this country was built on bloodshed. It takes bravery. There's a John Dunbar in every of us, but most americans prefer to be like Spivey or Bauer.

Even the trailer gets me. Why? I think it's the idea of frontiers inside ourselves. We need to cross those frontiers to truly know ourselves. This film plays out that metaphor so beautifully. And the performances... Graeme Green's performance as Kicking Bird is so perfectly pitched - funny, fierce, human, proud, shy and typically male in such a recognisable dad kind of way. In the end when he can't find the gift he wants to give Costner's character and he flies off the handle... it's such a perfect scene to describe his feelings. Giving the man a token of his affection feels so crucial. His wife tries to calm him - she just says, "it's alright". So many things are expressed in her words. We'll be alright. He knows you love him... etc. Stunning.

    officially turns 30 today!
I remember watching it way back
Very lengthy but I was swept away by Kevin Costner's smooth direction and performance. He actually funded most of the $3 million budget himself and faced certain insecurities.
Graham Greene is perfect as always as Kicking Bird.
Really love Mary McDonnell too. Gracious cinematography, lovely landscapes, and subtle emotions.
A familiar story yes and it's tough to honor the indigenous peoples' rich history making it seem simplistic, still Costner portrayed Natives as real people, as family. He captured the authenticity of the Lakota people from the language to the culture.
Plus the movie itself revived and rewrote the western genre since it went extinct thanks to Heavens Gate. The buffalo stampede wowed the cast especially.
It was refreshing to de-mythologize others' blarney of the US Calvary, murderous nature of the Indians and the John Wayne round-em-up mentality.
It won the Oscar for best picture beating Goodfellas and became the 3rd highest grossing movie behind Home Alone and Ghost.
I didn't know it was based on a book by Michael Blake. He even published a sequel in 2004. Sadly he passed away last year.
Costner was even made a honorary member of the Sioux Nation after the movie's release.
The music was actually a favorite of Pope John Paul II.

I grew up watching this in my household (5 when it came out), we had this on VHS. As a kid the biggest thing I took into account was the horse and wolf being killed and I cried of course, the rest I didn't understand... As I got older, I found out what it was truly about but till this day I still find something knew about it that I didn't recognize before (even though I did a sociology project on it.) This movie breaks my heart but at the same time warms it. I'm so glad I got to evolve as person with this movie. It's such a beautiful movie. I know this was an overly romantic view of how things were back then- for whites and natives alike- but we have become so cynical as a society and the dark and depressing films and shows being made these days reflects that.

I've seen hundreds of movies, but before this one, only two have made me cry - Legends of the Fall and Brokeback Mountain. Last night, I watched as the credits of this film scrolled and wept.
I don't remember anything having had such a powerful impact in such a long time - it was like it touched something deep down that had been buried and forgotten and brought it back to the surface.
Grief, joy, anxiety, hope, love, anger: this film had it all. There's been many technically great movies (Dark Knight, The Godfather), but this one was different - it touched the heart and made me cry and those are the movies you don't forget

It's both fortunate and unfortunate that, throughout history, the conquerer/marauder/explorer has to be captured and forced to experience the empathy and insight into another culture that should come naturally between people.
