Thank you, Tony. I had no idea of how to use a star-shaped tarp, and your video was excellent! My one is obviously a cheap "knock-off" missing the internal tie-offs, but right now, that is my best option. I've only tried it once for a local exercise with our Greymouth Land Search and Rescue group and, while it was easy to pitch, I was quite unsure about how much to tension it, and how to use in windy and changing conditions; your video has reinforced the possibilities of this type of tarp for me. Again, thank you.

Thank you Tony. Some good practical tips, which I've used to get a better pitch on my Silnylon Trailstar. Also, interesting comments on the floor options. I'm finding owning a Trailstar is bit of a journey, lots to learn. But a brilliant and versatile shelter.
Hi Tony, I've watched a few of your pitching guides and walks with a Trailstar. I'm a new owner of one of these superb shelters and I've asked friends for tips. As a result there's one thing that you do that is very frustrating. The way you find the rear guy by finding the logo patch at the door and then, there it is, the opposite one. Most people only do this once and then put a different coloured guy in the rear one or put a bit of red tape around it orsimilar. Then they have another very simple trick. They leave it hanging at the top of the stuff sack so the next time you come to pitch your shelter you can put a peg into the rear guy even before you pull the Trailstar out. The fact it is the correct one is confirmed by the fact that it is a different colour or whatever. This isn't my idea but I'm keen for you to pass it on. Keep filming and editing.
A different colour for tail probably very good idea tbh. I can't believe how old this video is now. Thanks for watching and commenting sorry took a year to reply.
Thanks Ant. I prefer to keep the video in one, not parts, so I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed it. I tried to cover as much as possible. I'm really proud of it. Thanks for your kind words. I think people, like you, enjoy my style lol :-)
Hi Adam. My system is so ridiculously simple it's great. The toggle can slide the whole length of the second 2.5 meter guide line. To shorten that line all I do is slide the toggle along it until I get the length I require and tie a knot behind the toggle any knot will do to stop it sliding back. You are correct you don't have to find the one fixed rear tie out any WILL but with my OCD I like to have the MLD badge above the door! I have tied a small length of green cord around the rear webbing on the correct tie out only about 10 cm so I see it at a glance. It's such an easy set up I can change the door position in about 1 minute. Cheers

Hi Chad, the oookworks gs is excellent! Well worth getting. You're right the bug bivy is really for an A tarp but it does work. The SL bivy is 200g. You may want medium will be lighter and of course cuben base would be lighter still. I really want to work with Sean to get a bug inner that works for cuben TS. Tony, I have the same length of 'guy' on all the points then I have a 'stand alone' length which I use as a guy from the outside pole to a stake - that way, all points are identical and I can move the pole as I need to and peg it out again. I have to admit, I've not yet had to change door position, but it does seem considerably easier than rethreading the locks (in the night, in the cold, the wind and rain...etc.) Just a suggestion! Great video, though - really useful. I love that last pitch - I'm going to have to try that.

Another great vid tony, needed to put the shades on as those legs is blinding ;) Out of curiousity what is the total footprint size needed to put this up? and also can you get a little more headroom but still keep the sides to the floor by highering the pole and having slightly steeper sides? atb steve.
It looks like it can take a fair amount of tension. I'd perhaps been a bit "over gentle" with mine trying to pitch it. I have 1m on each cord with a loop, so I interlock loops into one of the corner guys to make the door.
Yes pull it very tight Check out my fb group if on fb tonys wilderness. Or find me on fb or messenger and share a few photos. Basically the door is not a corner piece but middle section. An EPIC! great video tony but should have a intermission part way threw for ice cream and popcorn.Bess is looking really well and happy and still the star. I've been trying my trailstar in different pitches and find them all pretty easy,I also tried with all 5 sides pegged to the ground and found it really solid like that, tho awkward to get in and out of having to unhook a corner to get in then re hook it from the inside. Hi Debs, you still watching lol, there must be some meds for that affliction ;-) The corner tie points you can pull tight. The side points I only pull taut, they are for support only imo. One thing to remember is when silnylon gets wet it stretches, so you'll probably need to re tighten if it's raining. Happens to all silnylon. Though the TS is so tight in first place you may get away with it. Cuben doesn't stretch at all. ATB Tony :)
Haha, it took three attempts to upload, and two failed uploads (and this successful one) took 15 hours, I was pooing myself with this upload lol! Pleasure, it actually worked well waiting and doing it now as I brought more stuff, inners, and was really in the mood for it, so did much more than just pitch it. Hence the length lol. Worth the wait...its massive isn't it, easily fit two in there with room for a bit of kit. Thanks for watching.
I'm happy with my Hexamid but I see a Trailstar in my gear closet in the near future. If you could only own the silnylon or cuben, which would you keep?
Well...I have tried but in REALLY high winds, a flat tarp can leave you a bit stymied should the wind shift. I returned my DCF flat tarp in favor of this in sylnylon. Its 6 ounces heavier but worth it to me.
I use short fixed lengths on all points and then add an extra long guy on the one I use for the entrance. I tie the short one to the pole and then the long one gets tied to the pole too.
After seam sealing my new LTS Little Trail Star I thought it would be best to review this video before my first pitch. Great first viewing, even better the 2nd time. I really love the versatility of changing out the door as the wind changes. Have you strung a "clothes line" from mitten hook to mitten hook to hang gear or bug bivy?
Yes, you could, but I have heard Ron's (owner of MLD) yellow line is the best and never slips, so I'll keep to it. There probably is a way to distinguish the rear, but I was rather chuffed by my way here, I made it up on camera and worked a treat. You go online, Google MLD and follow your nose around the MLD (Mountain Laurel Designs) website and order using the site and PayPal direct from the USA. Expect to wait a couple of months, all made to order and Ron is getting busier...
I found the Hexanet inner for the Hexamid Solo also fits inside the Trailstar exactly. The Hexanet has net walls with Cuben groundsheet, and only weighs 7ozs.
Hi John that's good to know. Stupid UA-cam flagged you as spam. I think Ron at MLD is going to make groundsheets, but not sure if for TS or just the mids.

Haha! Yes, higher pole, steeper sides, then the door will probably be narrower and taller. I think Ron states a footprint of 50 square feet(?) But could be wrong.
Nice video, Tony! I've been eyeing a duomid + superlight bivy combo for quite a while now but your trailstar videos is really making me itch for one. How would you compare the two? P.S.: How's that new cook kit video coming? Just a friendly reminder ;)
...probably due to all this free advertising lol ;-) I ought to own shares lol!! Both bivys by MLD, again expect a long wait. Its a smallish cottage industry. But reliable. And trustworthy. Groundsheet by Oookworks. Contact Sean. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi I have a silnylon trailstar and I have come up with a very easy way to change the door when needed. On all the line lock I have about 60cm of cord with a loop tied on the end that I use to peg it out. Now rather than use a 2.5m line where I want my door I keep the same 60cm with loop and use an additional line 2.5m long with a toggle on it!! Simple now I never have to remove and reattach Any of the lines simply move the toggle line to tie out point I wish to use!
That's a great idea, I think I saw your photos or someone's somewhere showing this. Question. What if the terrain means you can't peg the line at 2.5m for door and need it much shorter or a bit longer? Can that be worked around. Thanks for sharing your idea. Might try it.
Hi Tony. Yes the toggle can slide along the whole length of the guide line so a simple half hitch anywhere along it can shorten the line. At full length you have just over 3m of guide line and I have never needed more than that. :-)
Do you have any pics of your toggle/guy system for the door? I'm going to go with same type of setup in that each line is equal and then use a separate on door so it would be interesting to see how you do it :)
I’ve watched this a few times now - in keen preparation for when my trailstar arrives

P.S.: How's that new cook kit video coming? Just a friendly reminder ;)
did I ever do a cooking kit video lol
I just can't help myself lol, its my humour all the time :-) thanks :-)
How tall are you Tony? Do you think a trailstar is suitable for someone 6'3" with the mesh inner
Probably not :)
I'm 5'8" and you'd maybe ok to 6' but you'll struggle over that I fear
I have certainly seen it used in very exposed places in pictures by very experienced people.
...probably due to all this free advertising lol ;-)
I ought to own shares lol!!
Both bivys by MLD, again expect a long wait. Its a smallish cottage industry. But reliable. And trustworthy.

Haha, you see enough of me already!

A half hitch, thanks, I'll have to check that knot out :)
Do you have any pics of your toggle/guy system for the door? I'm going to go with same type of setup in that each line is equal and then use a separate on door so it would be interesting to see how you do it :)
I don't have it set up and I'm confused by the toggle system for shortening main line tbh.
Why arent u watching the camera when you are talking?
Could you possibly be more insensitive? I think not.
Could you pitch a tent while always looking at camera,it goes without saying..I think not😎
Hahaha hehehe, eyes off my legs! Besides if you had Hobbs white leg colour you have hairy walls :-)
silnylon 100% it's more "flexible" but cuben is awesome ;-)
