Lauri Volpi has the 2nd spot because his voice was ringing with a lot of silver in it and which is most important - it was effortless... nothing like Corelli’s stance when he was singing high notes or like Pavarotti who would take a huge breath with his diaphragm... lauri Volpi is a big reason Corelli is number 1... before Lauri Volpi, Corelli didn’t have the technique he ultimately became number 1 with... I would love to hear Corelli on a complete Rigoletto recording, if only in the studio. He would be a perfect Duca, despite the role being very lyrical, because he had a voice that transitioned very well between romantic and jovial; and the dark and hard. It was very versatile, that's why he sang both La Bohème and Il Trovatore well.
If you want to hear the Perfect Lyrical Duke, look no further than Ferrucio Tagliavini on the old Cetra Label. Corelli would have to lose a lot of Baggage to come remotely close to him in this Role. Del Monaco was a complete failure on the old Decca label.
@@waynewilliams4706 Corelli had a big, voice. You cannot just make a big voice smaller, it is bad for a big voice to try and sing smaller and lighter constantly. They can do it occasionally but not on a permanent basis. Corelli cannot just lose some "baggage", his voice simply had a lot of weight.
