Stefan, after 10 years of watching this video on and off I finally pulled the trigger and bought a Hubertus lever lock just like this one. It’s an amazing knife and will be my new EDC. I also just found out that since 2020, Hubertus lever locks have been manufactured by Otter Messer. I hope you see this comment. Thanks for all of the detailed, informative knife videos over the years!
@@disarmyouwitha Otter is a highly respected manufacturer. They make the famous Mercator knife (also known as the black cat knife). I think it's a good thing. The family that owns the Hubertus brand wasn't able to find a successor to run their own factory so they licensed the business to Otter.
Another great review. I think you do an excellent job reviewing knives, Stefan. In particular, I like how you give the history/origin of the knife, which gives it significance and desirability for a potential collector.
So you're a salt-&-tomato kind of guy. My Dutch mother used to keep me guessing by using either salt or sugar on the tomatoes we had. I think the ones with sugar were meant as an incentive to eat more of them. I haven't had them with sugar for some decades now. Most of them now come adorned in Italian dressing now. Beautiful knife. To me, the release mechanism is particularly German. Well presented, as usual.
Other company that has long time experience with Lever Lock Automatic knives is Mikov. It´s a Czech company from Mikulášovice, that makes traditional hunting knives and Lever Locks for many decades. The lower-end production knives have 420 or 440A blades but high-end Mikov Lever Locks have RWL-34 or Damasteel blades and handles from exotic woods, horns and bones. Some of the cheaper autos contain f.e. saw, can and bottle opener or corkscrew.
Traditional German kinives... there is, of course, the "Mercator" or "Black Cat" knife - but other than this: it's the "GroBer Springer", the huntsman's/gentleman's switchblade knife, awesome work of art!
Very informative video on this particular knife. Had one some years ago and lost it on a hike. Just ordered another one and excitement is abound. You have a great channel so as a knife and gear nut I had to subscribe.
Thanks, Stefan! I finally have a Hubertus Springer coming my way soon. It's an older one from before reunification (etched "W Germany") and not rostfrei. I look forward to adding it to my collection knowing thanks to you that it is a quality knife.
Cool never even thought of that! I guess we forget that knives were once an everyday tool that everyone carried. Nowadays people ask why do you carry a knife and is it legal. I guess nowadays most people think of them as weapons not tools.

Some months back i was doing reserach on which would be a good auto-Knife for me.After your extensive film i was very impressed with a good all round explanation and attributes.Coincidentally i had found a site which offered the hubertus. and also other knives-I had bought a japanese one already--five miniutes later literally i found this blog/film. Wesley Caesar 150 english pounds ,they are $259.00 average.on autoknife.com that is the site i used the knife was sent first as a legal lock knife and then the spring came seperate to the uk,very good srvice
Great review. This is a very neat design, particularity for the time is was patented. I'm glad you detailed the mechanism, most interesting. Thanks Stefan.
Dear Stefan, great video again !!! what a superb review including some historical information. This german switchblade springer is absolutely fantastic... and I was not aware that this knife was a typical german one.
This knife, or rather a variation of it, was my first automatic knife. I purchased it in the early 90's somewhere near Frankfurt. It is a quality knife that holds an edge and still works as well as it did new. One caveat, it should be kept from grit and lint that you might find in a pocket, in other words: keep it in a sheath or you will have a difficult cleanup. Taking it apart is not trivial, It is held together with brass rivets, you have to grind off the rivetheads and drive them out, and have some brass rivets on hand to put it back together. Unlike your example, but as pictured at 3:17, my blade has cutout for finger nails. If the knife is working correctly you cannot use it to open the blade, but if the blade is stuck, see above, you can use it to force the blade out. Mine has a saw blade that looks just like the one in that picture, it works well. The seller warned me that I could not take it back to the 'State's... Right.
Thank you, Mark! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to carry this switchblade here in Germany (and I know it's the same in Australia). By filming the opening sequence at a public picnic area I broke the law. But don't tell anyone! ;-)
Wonderful review. Question: for long term storage, is it better to have blade open, or closed? It seems to me that blade open keeps less tension on the spring and prevents "metal fatigue", but some people disagree. What do you think? Thank you.
Good question! I store it with the blade folded since the knife was designed for this purpose. Does it reduce the knife's lifetime? I don't know. Some people report that even after a decade or longer the Hubertus springs still work fine. If a spring breaks it can be replaced fairly easily without taking the knife apart.
Hi there, thanks so much for your post, even though I realise it's been quite some time since you produced it. I live in Australia and although I've looked at various sites selling these beautiful knives, it seems difficult to establish which knife is which, outside of product numbers which show nothing when entered on google etc. Which would you suggest as the best site to look or examine these products in detail? Thank you! Keith.
Hi Stefan, not sure if you still doing reviews. Question for you; I purchased this knife, and also purchased a Thiere "le companion". I can't seem to get a good sharp edge on the Hubertus, which I can on the Companion. Any thoughts? Have you found the same?
Beautiful presentation. I am curious, will these develop blade play like most stillettos? Will the leaf spring wear out in after years of use? The craftsmanship looks a lot better than an akc lever lock, but I haven't held a hubertus. I just wish these had harder steel than 420, I have seen to many old nice knives that are almost unusable from years of sharpening because the "soft" steel, a buck knife is 420 and I have to sharpen that knife far more than even a 440c blade. Makes a bit of a difference for me because if i buy a quality knife I'm not just buying it for me, I hopefully would pass it on..
+Paul M. Leverlock mechanism is completely different than a stiletto. Every leverlock I've had including Hubertus, Mikov, AKC, etc. were rock solid with no bladeplay at all. :) If you want a classic leverlock with modern premium steel, take a look at the Mikov Predator in RWL-34 or PMC-27 Damasteel. Both are amazing European steels comparable to S35VN/ELMAX.
The point of buying a collector knife, is you don't use them EVER. You cherish them and take care of them. Oil them when they need it. Keep them away from dust. Never sharpen them. You admire them. preserve them. That's how you collect a knife. Otherwise buy yourself a 40 dollar Syderco, a nice Every day carry. A good hubertus runs at 300.00 USD baseline.
+Frank Gee Not some of us. I take pride and get much pleasure from using well made tools, but do so with a sense of responsibility and take precautions. Spyderco might have made it's place in the average man's "edc" role, but that doesn't mean I want to use one. Every one is entitled to their own ideas and we have different tastes(although most people are pretty bread and butter, not me). Use it and use it well, thats what the maker would want. Plus, it's kinda of a bold statement to whip out a $500 knife and the ladies love it for sure If you are prone to lose things or are clumsy you can disregard everything I said though, haha

Awesome Stephan. Could u tell me who invented the lever lock ? I was wondering and needed more info on it for a video on my lever lock by Microtech I plan to do.
