unless you operate in a very specific CD-oriented niche x genre like ambient or experimental jazz or anything with extended 20+ minutes track lengths i'd recommend going the tape & vinyl route for physical releases.
even though i don't dislike the format per se -... and only do review physical copies as a music writer x critic - in working a dayjob at a physical music distributors warehouse which mostly specializes in vinyl but also is selling other formats i've seen 60+% return rates for CD releases by well known artists in the past five years, especially if they're put out on the streets via consignment deals in big electronic chain stores, and small vendors x brick and mortar stores all over the world hardly do order CDs at all anymore.

Ver good points. In general the public desire for CDs is almost nothing. Out of 10 clients, 8 will do only online distribution and 2 manufacture CDs for radio distribution. Majority of my clients, Americana Music, don't really have any interest in marketing physical formats. My brother has a label and they do a great business in selling vinyl.

@@vsoproductions i've got some experience in that regard, too. both through having worked in several labels offices over the years as well as running an independent label operation myself - with the first stint from 1999-2004/5-ish and coming back to it for a continous relaunch in late 2018 with major plans of expansion these days.

I got deeply involved in modern music promotion a year and a half ago when I started my own label VSM Records. I pressed up 100 CDs sent out 20 or so for radio and then sold the rest through Bandcamp, so I know it can be done, just takes digging in and workingi it. Good on you for keeping on with it, best of luck. Let us know about your label, we support self promotion

Press CD's, and get a couple of vinyls and tapes too. Take them with you when you have gigs. A handful amount of the people who enjoyed your performance are going to buy something to show support and gratitude for having a good time. Some of these people still like CD's, some still prefer vinyl and some collect tapes. Just keep gigging until you've sold them all, by then you've made profit, and who knows, maybe it has evened out the cost of the gas you've spent getting to the gigs? One less expense from a reasonable investment.

Excellent idea. I originally had something like this in the video, but it was too long, but I also feel as if discs and tapes are like merch and even if you listen to the music online, buying a disc is a great way of showing support. If I like listening to an artist online, I go to their bandcamp or website and buy the disc even though I may not ever listen to that. Thanks for this input

That's becoming more and more of a common thing. I also don't have a CD player, so its important to have music available online somewhere.
