I also think you guys missed a beat on the limiter. Volvo announced its implementation starting in May and that Care Keys come standard on limited cars. You will find none of the MY2020 Volvos in the US come with Care Keys as standard, certainly not S60s because nearly the entire inventory was produced before May as the plant was idled due to a combination of COVID-19 and low demand. The MY2021s have started arriving, however, and they all have Care Keys, confirming the limiter.
As this Volvo is more then 187 inches it is not a compact car even by US standard. The room in front of the center console fits my iPhone 15 Pro Max perfectly also with the USB cable connected so pretty sure its made for either the guy who does not put a wallet around his/her phone OR the guy who wants to forget his keys in the car. 😉
I also like amber for aesthetics reasons. But safety-wise, I can make a case for why red rear signals are potentially safer: in poor visibility, like fog, seeing a red blinking light in the distance gives a quick visual confirmation that you are definitely looking at the rear of a car and not at a car coming at you. I admit that this may not be a very compelling reason since most cars now have DRL so it should be fairly obvious to distinguish between a car going in opposite direction vs same direction. But if a car doesn’t have DRL, then for a driver to be able to distinguish quickly in poor visibility whether that blinking light is coming from the rear of a car or the front is a safety advantage in favor of red rear signal. That said, I still prefer rear amber signals because I think they look classier, especially for luxury segment.
Alex, my man, just wanted to thank you for doing such a great job with reviews of electrified vehicles. I picked up the S60 Recharge a week ago in part thanks to your reviews. I was myself leaning toward S60 T8 / Recharge over BMW 330e but you saying you would rather have the Volvo over the BMW sort of helped me muster the courage to actually pull the trigger. Having had a BMW before but never having had a Volvo before i needed that bit of encouragement. I watched two direct comparisons of Volvo to BMW and both of them chose BMW as the winner ... but of course neither of them actually understood the Volvo system and why it is superior to the BMW system, and both of them made the amateurish error of comparing AWD Volvo to RWD BMW and not realizing AWD BMW had much worse fuel economy ... i basically dismissed both of those reviews and took your advice instead and so far i'm glad that i did ! your reviews of the Volvo hit on many important details like it being made in USA or Volvo selling the highest percentage of plug-in vehicles versus any other brand which other reviewers miss. quite simply without your reviews i would probably be driving an inferior vehicle right now instead of the awesome Volvo S60 Recharge :)
Your reviews are some of the best iv ever seen. Head and shoulders above anyone else in the Western world. Very detailed. you really help viewers understand what it would be like to own a vehicle. well done!
It may not be as athletic as some of the sportiest models in this segment, but if I was looking for a more comfort-oriented compact luxury sedan, the S60 would definitely be at the top of my list. I’d certainly take a Momentum/Inscription S60 over, say, a base A4 or a luxury version of the C300. I’m just bored of the German entries in this segment and I find it refreshing how unique the S60 is overall. I’d skip the R-Design and Polestar Engineered trims, though, because the S60 really seems to excel as more of a comfortable luxury car.
@Victor Hugo The video is actually wrong. The 112 mph limiter was announced to start in May 2020, but US production of this car was shut down. The limited cars also come with a Care Key as standard which, if you shop around, you will find none of the 2020 models come with. So 155 mph for MY2020 S60s in the US, 112 for MY2021. Heico has announced that they are working on solutions to this limiter and to expect more form them about it in Fall 2020.
First time I've seen your new on-screen graphics / side panels ... very nicely done! ... imho adds significantly to the understanding and enjoyment of the detailed information you present.
I really like how you present stuff without going overboard with enthusiasm and with sufficient attention to detail. I’d love your thoughts on the S 60 PHEV as compared to say the BMW 530 E
Would be interesting to know the cost of maintenance down the road compared to the german and japanese options. I think that is an important point that almost everybody misses when deciding to buy a car. Thanks for the excellent review
I have a 2019 T5 MOM in red with the exterior styling kit, 19 inch wheels, and some interior packages but not nav. Wish it had paddle shifters and the full digital gauge cluster, but other than that, I love it. Had I waited, could’ve probably snagged up an R-Design loaner on a good lease deal. Definitely a lot less common compared to its counterparts in the segment and has more road presence IMO. Would’ve been tough to decide between the red and the bursting blue if I was shopping for a 2020.
I just bought a red 2019 low miles and am really liking it. I definitely now realized it does not have a full gauge cluster, but hey, I’ll live. It’s an extremely nice design and build.
Thanks for the great video! Will you also review the drive of T5 FWD some day in the future? Ps: I think you put the incorrect MSRP for Momentum T5. It should start 36k not 55k at 18:10
I had a lower spec S60 as a rental car, and the power was decent, looks were great, the interior was nice, but was really underwhelmed by the handling. It wasn't particularly sharp and the ride was just ok.
Red turn signals have turned me away from buying a car before, namely a W204. I assume manufacturer's do there market research, so I guess I'm an exception.
@@James-il3tq I have a white interior on the 2018 BMW530e and to my eyes it definitely looks dated. Kid of like 60's Chryslers. However, for some reason it looks better on the Volvo.
the uneven gap between the hood and the headlight drives me insane. that thick bar flare design running across above the headlights mean that it must be difficult to stamp the hood edge properly to match the flow of the more detailed pc/abs front cover.
There are so many possibilities of interior colors. Why everyone get a black one to review? A full while or cream color interior would make the living space so much more pleasant. Even tan or red ones would be so much more better. These black interior does not do any justice to some of these nice interiors designs at all.
I think the discussion on engine power needs some...revision...because the power itself is irrelevant. Discussing power alone would have you believe a T6 is almost comparable to an S4, especially if you opt for the factory Polestar Optimization option, but that is not even slightly true because the T6 is, in fact, slower than the A4 Quattro 45 TFSI on account of the car being heavier and Audi underrating their engines (like all the Germans do, because the provided figures are supposed to be "worst case" scenario). It doesn't make sense to mark competition down on power if the performance derived from the available power is better.
Alex, for the length graphic at 2:14 the current BMW 3-series generation is now longer than before (185.4 inches) and should be placed after the Model 3 (184.8 in). Other than that, great review as usual!
I literally did not buy a great deal of a car because it had red turn signals. Volvo does not seen to realize that orange turn signals are MUCH safer imo. Pet peeves of mine are red turn signals and lowbeem cut off that is too high. In the last few years I have been feeling like most drivers are flashing highbeems on only to realize that it's the lowbeems that angle up every time the car accelerates. And red turn signals have almost caused a crash or two because a car changing lanes while feathering their breaks might as well not even have signaled at all.
@@afcgeo882 Agreed. So where are there studies showing amber is safer? Certainly a lot of people think so, but it seems based on vague notions of what should be more visible. I suspect it's the action of the light flashing that attracts attention and color is a minor issue, but I won't claim that's a fact.

Alex, I really enjoy your videos and channel and this is why I am posting a comment even though commenting on youtube videos is generally a bad idea. I appreciate your no-nonsense explanations of a lot of the details, but your description of the Audi drivetrain as being "rear biased" because it's mounted longitudinally is at best very misleading and serving to perpetuate a myth that Audi and Subaru's marketing teams surely appreciate. I'm not going to argue about the technical details because it would take too long and also would be an interesting future video, but the reason why base model Audis are FWD is because the vast majority of Audi cars (the advent of SUVs has changed this somewhat) sold are FWD only, and this is fine for their customers who are predominantly Chinese. The A3, A4 and A6 were not even available with any form of AWD in any trim (other than S or RS) in China until the last generation. There are technical reasons why Audi sedans use a longitudinal layout but they have nothing to do with whether their AWD systems are "rear biased" or not, and after Audi stopped using mechanical Torsen differentials in most of their cars, even the longitudinal ones, it's not even physically possible anyway. Nor does having a transverse engine prevent a car from having a mechanical differential and "full time" all wheel drive, Lancer Evos, Celica GT4s, Lancia Delta Integrales all had transverse engines and AWD that could allow them to drive the rear wheels independently of the front wheels, and were thus more "rear biased" than any of these new Audis. I do enjoy your videos generally though so you should do a video on this topic!
Volvo thinks american byers like RED turn signals??? Hell no, I can't tell if you're braking or intending to turn... Amber signals should be a law like how reverse cameras are mandatory.
I really like lighter color interiors particularly the front pillars. For me it’s a significant issue with some of the BMWs that they have black headliners. Makes me feel like I’m in a cave.
If you do a lot of driving in town the T8 is the choice. I presently drive a BMW 530e and because of the battery driving the car in town I am presently getting 90mpg!!! Once you get on the open hwy in long trips the hybrid advantage, other than superior acceleration disappears. Reason I am getting a Tesla3.

I was about to make this very comment. The G70 has been piling up serious praise and winning comparisons. It may not be one of the top sellers, but it's one of the most competitive cars in its class, especially considering its price. It should have been in the comparison instead of the Q50.
@Shamur Stewart It's the principle, especially on a car that does 0-60 in 4.4. I wouldn't buy it new or used because of the limiter and I doubt it will be anyone's track day choice because of that too. It's a decision that alters its appeal to me.
@Shamur Stewart The principle is significant if Alex spent a paragraph mentioning this in his review. It's significant if other reviews or publications mention it as well but I guess we'll see as those roll out. I'm assuming you're trying to invalidate or minimize the point by using quotation marks around "car enthusiast," using the laughing emoji and of course 'bub'. Those reflect on you, not me.
@@delerium75 I suspect if you're shopping for a Volvo, speed governors arent high on your priority list. If you are very inclined, like any car, there will be ways around such a governor with a tune or ECU flash. Not a big deal at all in my opinion.

@@ARentz07 No it isn't a European car joke. Abba was a early 80's band from Sweden. They were very popular for their 2 #1 hit songs Take a Chance on Me and i forgot the other one
In Europe, Volvo is a standard, not luxury car and it’s priced as such (cars are far more expensive in Europe than North America.) In North America, Volvo is trying to compete in the luxury segment and it cannot. The 4-cylinders, the front wheel bias and the lack of performance are obvious. In turn, they have lots of non-luxury features.
The NHTSA doesn’t control safety standards, but also... amber has never been shown to be safer than red. It’s just a different standard because of design history. Back in the 1950’s, European cars were MUCH smaller than American ones and had tiny lamps. To tell the difference better, they chose to have a different color for the turn signals and side markers. That was never an issue in North America, where tail lamps were huge, so they used the same bulb/color.
We got the pricing wrong at the end. Eeek! Sorry about that everyone!

Obsession with safety is incompatible with red turn signals.
Not a single accident happens because someone thinks a car is braking, one side at a time.
Amber all the way
Alex, I really enjoy your videos and channel and this is why I am posting a comment even though commenting on youtube videos is generally a bad idea.
188 hp? Lol here we can get them with 150 and less.
I too prefer amber turn signals. Red just seems lazy to me, like an afterthought.
Mom how do you figure that lights would interfere with radar anyway.?
And soon you'll get the new Lexus IS. At least in the US, seems it won't come to Europe :(
Volvo thinks american byers like RED turn signals??? Hell no, I can't tell if you're braking or intending to turn... Amber signals should be a law like how reverse cameras are mandatory.
Prices are incorrect
I really like lighter color interiors particularly the front pillars. For me it’s a significant issue with some of the BMWs that they have black headliners. Makes me feel like I’m in a cave.
no power boot?
powered telescopic steering wheel unneeded cost and complexity= smart
It’s a luxury car, not a Volkswagen.
I also prefer amber rear turn lights. Along with being safer it gives the car more character
I wish I had Amber on my SPA XC60
295 feet pounds of torque for the T6
i would get the T6 AWD instead of the T8
If you do a lot of driving in town the T8 is the choice. I presently drive a BMW 530e and because of the battery driving the car in town I am presently getting 90mpg!!! Once you get on the open hwy in long trips the hybrid advantage, other than superior acceleration disappears. Reason I am getting a Tesla3.
hughn1 The price difference is far too big for any advantage.
Purely subjective, I’m not a fan of light colored seats. They show dirt and wear marks too easily.
In a hot climate like Phoenix the light interior is more liveable, but as you say it does start to show dirt
Amber all the way.
17:57 Same exact price for Momentum, R Design, and Inscription trim levels 🤔🤔🤔
Darn it. We got that wrong.
$55k without keyless entry. LOL
why would you need more horsepower than this car already has? Hell for every day driving half that would be fine.
I love my xc90 , I just think people would buy their SUV over the sedan
DO NOT BUY A VOLVO! I am the current owner of a 2019 S60 T6 Inscription and the vehicle has been a complete nightmare. It is plagued with quality issues and has been in the shop more than all my previous cars were combined, I am in my late 30’s. Worse of all, dealing with the Volvo dealership network and Volvo USA has been even a worse experience. Endless circle of taking the vehicle to the shop to have quality issues and defects documented then calling Volvo USA for resolution but receiving no courtesy or care. I bought a $60k piece of crap that I do not even trust to drive more than 30 miles from my house. Asked them to buy it back or forgive my loan, would not. Asked them to give me a replacement vehicle, would not. Even though I have a service record the thickness of a dictionary on a car with 33k miles on it. They do not care about their customers unless they are selling you the car, after that you are on your own!

@Volvo Cars you made the same comment on my original post 8 months ago. I am still facing the same issues with zero resolution. I am now spending more of my personal time to post my experience everywhere I can on social media. To inform others of the terrible experience they will face if they have issues with their Volvo purchase. Please have someone that can actually do something to help me reach out. I would love to provide them video evidence of all my quality issues. They can also review my open service ticket going back to 2019! At this point, this experience has been so frustrating that I will make it a point to inform any colleagues, friends, family to never buy a Volvo!

@Volvo Cars here is the link to the video with my original comment from more than 8 months ago, I emailed you then with video proof and all you did was reroute me back to Volvo USA. Please put me in contact with someone that can actually help me, rather than just having me take my car into the dealership for service and nothing being fixed! ua-cam.com/video/hTjLmHXoNNw/v-deo.html
Amber turn signals all the way!
Some dumb journalist curbed that front bumper real bad. Uggg
How do you not mention the G70? It's price and performance fall right on top of this Volvo. Car of the year last year.
I was about to make this very comment. The G70 has been piling up serious praise and winning comparisons. It may not be one of the top sellers, but it's one of the most competitive cars in its class, especially considering its price. It should have been in the comparison instead of the Q50.
Reliability from Volvo after 2000 just gone down to shit. Price of BMW, brand of a Honda, failed reliability of a Mercedes.
Give us amber turn signals in the US!!
Limited to 112?? What is this...1985?? Why not just put in an 85 mph speedo instead of that 160?
Some German vehicles are limited to 155 mpg. Is any speed limit acceptable to you? If so, why?
@@mart0225I think a top speed in the 120-130 range is completely appropriate for this car...h-speed rating tire range in other words.
heavy and safe, but no fun
Turbocharged + supercharged + electric.
I can smell the fresh ink on the upcoming bills.
Not if you lease...it will always be in warranty as long as the lease is less than 4 yrs. Volvo covers all maintenance the first 4 yrs!
Buy a Ford I can smell the fresh ink on the upcoming bills.
This retails for over $80,000 Canadian here. How many will they sell? 10 in a year I think......lol...
Is $80,000 in purple Canadian Monopoly money considered real $$?🤔🤔
TC SC and a hybrid system? What could possibly go wrong...
Don’t forget the 8 speed automatic transmission. Granted it’s an Aisin, but it’s still one more component that could fail
Sounds like my 2018 BMW 530e and as usual with all my BMW nothing ever has gone wrong. At any rate it will be covered by 100% maintenance by Volvo. Three yr lease on all of them and no worried ever!
Jay Mac Anything “could” fail.
Hybrids are incredibly reliable.
Buy Ford, Mazda, SEAT, Peugeot, Citroen, Vw then. You can smell the fresh ink on the upcoming bills.
Great reviews. Please cut down on your "overalls" and your "little bits" they're like every second word lol
He doesn't say "overall" every other word.
Safety Dance? C'mon. Good one. Take a Chance on Me from Abba would also be appropraite?
Is this a European car joke?
@@ARentz07 No it isn't a European car joke. Abba was a early 80's band from Sweden. They were very popular for their 2 #1 hit songs Take a Chance on Me and i forgot the other one
@@tjk9263 Early 70's. They have more than 2 famous songs.
In Europe, Volvo is a standard, not luxury car and it’s priced as such (cars are far more expensive in Europe than North America.)
In North America, Volvo is trying to compete in the luxury segment and it cannot. The 4-cylinders, the front wheel bias and the lack of performance are obvious. In turn, they have lots of non-luxury features.
Buy Ford then. You can smell the fresh ink on the upcoming bills.
AMBER all the time! I still don't understand what it's wrong with the NHTSA in your country.
That was never an issue in North America, where tail lamps were huge, so they used the same bulb/color.
the 2020 lexus es 350 is a lot better
The gearing seems to be sub-optimal on the es 350.
