Cheers, what a well made video. Much appreciated, good content, no annoying music and no over caffinated person holding a camera.
And that's why you are masons ADV! Those are some amazing pointers then I'm going to go up in the garage right now and check. Thanks again. I'm looking forward to your next video.
Cheers, Ron! I hope some of that is useful to you :)
Wonderful work. I love seeing the meticulous attention to detail - a thing of beauty. Thank you.
Thank you very much!
Thanks Mason,i just bought a 13 model with 17000 klms, didn't know they had a doohickey adjustment bolt,,i was stressing about it ,, all the klr guys are saying get it replaced,, i will but it's not cheap, now at least I can adjust it right,,cheers
what exactly is a doohickey? I bought w 2014
I just bought the same model and im going on a long trip with it in a month. Very helpful thank you
Wow, all tips very helpful, I have some work to do before we start pounding dirt. Thanks Mason. Appreciate all the work and time u put into your videos, they are always great... Happy Riding cheer's
Right on Brian! Cheers man :)
Great info Mason. I really need to start my book
Good Morning Scratch :) The book is the best thing I have done for my KLR ;) Cheers man!
Thanks for these tips Mason. I know this video is old, but it is still relevant. I just picked up a new-to-me 2002 KLR650C with low KM's and these are a good place to start before I start riding it.
Really appreciate the tips!! I've learned a lot from your channel and it's been super helpful. My recently acquired 2008 was actually missing one of the exhaust bolts so super glad I checked!
Glad to help! Every bike can benefit from an evening checkup of the fasteners ;) Cheers!
Hell fire. Read about my KLR all the time. Heard of air boxes melting but this is the first video I have seen that addresses that bolt. Got about a turn and a half on my 2018. Thanks!!!
Awesome! Glad to help :) Cheers!
Dude! Super informative!! Thanks for the heads up, picking up my friends 09 early next year.
Awesome! Enjoy :)
You do a nice job on fixing and maintaining these bikes .
Cheers David :) 👍
About to purchase my first KLR, a '22 Adventure. I wanna keep it a long time even though 99.99% of my riding will be ez on road stuff. Vids like yours are so valuable in learning how to maintain a bike to keep one riding for many years. Pat yourself on the back for a well done video! Stay safe!!
Cheers! Good luck with your purchase 👍
I need to start my book too, thanks for the valuable tips.
Your welcome! Cheers ;)
Hey Mason. Excellent, you just gave me the excuse to go buy a NM/IN LB torque wrench. I knew I needed one, and now there are multiple things I didn't even know I had to check, thanks for that info! Also, love the log book. I'm kind of OCD but never kept a book...why not? That makes perfect sense. Thank you
There ya go Don! Yeah, my OCD shines through sometimes ;) Cheers man!
Yeah me too Scratch. I have done a ton of stuff but have not written anything down... good info thanks Mason.
Thanks Sean, it gets more important as we age ;) lol
Your first tip finally got my bike to stop popping in any engine brake scenario!
Awesome! It certainly sorted mine out too 🙂👍
Thank you very much for your vid from Montreal, sharing with a friend, I’m doing som research for him!
Awesome! Thanks for watching and the share Mike :) Cheers 👍
Thanks Mason! Excellent tips. Great camera work and narration, as always. I'm going to start a log book too, not that I would ever forget anything at my age. I remember everything, just ask my wife. On second thought, never mind.
Haha, Yeah, that sounds about right for here too! Cheers Mike:)
Realy well done video. I need to start a log book for notes and maintenance etc. Thanks again Mason.
Thanks Gary :) It really helps me keep track of everything. Cheers :)
Great video! I get popping on deceleration and did not know where to start to diagnose it! I do now :)
Good pointers Sir! Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching, Alex! Cheers :)
Great tips for any bike. Check and torque all bolts. Research the model consistant issues. Keep records. If ever part with your dear machine it's easier to get top dollar because it will be in the best shape and you van prove it. Great info.
Exactly AZ. Sure helps out down the road when you have all the service records :) Cheers!
Great video, Mason! Much appreciated wisdom! 👍😃
Thanks for watching, TB! Cheers :)
Great info Mason, gonna check my exhaust bolts as soon as it warms up 👍
Cheers Eamon. I know mine required constant tightening for the first couple thousand km's but then they settled in ;)
Important things to know about your KLR . Thanks for the advice on the 5 free things , 5 more things everyone should do on the next video.
Cheers Aaron :)
Thanks Mason! Great tips whether you have owned a KLR before or not. I previously owned 2002 and 2009 models and just purchased a 2018. By the way, I like your garage set-up and overhead storage.
Your right David, We all forget to check some of this stuff even as KLR veterans :) It was a good spring run through for me too! Thanks ;)
Good tips Mason. I had the popping on decel after wrapping my exhaust. Replacing the copper gasket and properly torquing the bolts fixed it. Didn't know about the doohickey chain tensioner bolt, must check mine. Cheers. Jason.
Hey Jason, It fixed mine too when I torqued them up. Cheers man 👍
Great video. I like your work ethic. Thanks for the good info.
Thanks for watching! Cheers :)
Just catching up with some past videos .. great tip on keeping everything logged in a book. Simple, easy reference .. for old guys like me ! ;)
I don't have a choice! Haha, the book is a life saver for sure :) Cheers!
What a great video. Simple stuff that make such a difference. Thank you.
I'm not sure if you made a video on how to clean and mantein your chain, if not please make one. You chain looks impeccable.
Glad you enjoyed it :) I will put a chain vid on the list! Cheers Longboard!
Thanks Masons ADV for your information excelent video.
Thanks for following along :) Cheers!
I use torque specs all the time too and people think I'm silly. Great informative video.
Not silly at all! If your like me and tend to put down too many kilonewtons you have to use a torque wrench. Hahah
Thanks Mason these are great tips. As I was watching this video I followed you as you checked the points and I be damn if mine weren't loose and torqued them back to spec's. You get 10,000,000 Gold Stars. Cheers
New subscriber, just picked up a 2022 KLR 650. You got some good info on your channel.
Awesome! Welcome aboard :) Congrats and enjoy that new ride :)
Great tips Mason! I'm with Scratch. I need to start a book.
Cheers Cappy!
Great sunday morning video!
Cheers Chris!
This is going to be very helpful. Thank you.
Glad to help :) Cheers Aaron!
👍 ☕️ great tips, I also keep a log book of what I’ve done. Still haven’t pulled the trigger on a newer KLR, might keep the “07” and totally trick it out. 🤑
Super handy to have if your memory is anything like mine :D Yeah, Do it up! Fun project right there. Cheers Steve!
Great information video! Pass along the knowledge Mason...
Cheers Dean! :)
Just checked my klrs timing chain adjuster , im at 5500 miles and it was loose!!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯 Mason your a life saver!!!!! I
Yeah, keep an eye on it. Glad to help 🙂👍
Awesome video! I appreciate it.
Thanks Masons ADV. I love my KLR and like to do my own upkeep if I can.
Cheers Jim! I enjoy tinkering too :)
Great video thanks !
Mason, your videos almost got me to get a KLR instead of piecing together the F650 carbs and getting the red beemer in my garage corner revived from its last rest day in 2003. They are just similar enough bikes that I can’t justify having 2 of the same type. But if I rode a lot, I would get one of those KLRs before they are gone for good.
Nice! That's great :) I love a project. Don't worry, the KLR's will be around for a long time yet ;) Cheers Gregor!
Great details Man! Thank you
I’m riding my first klr 650
It’s a 2022. Just did my first oil change. Your suggestions will be helpful. New Subscriber here 👍🏻
Great advice. I've kept a meticulous log of everything I've done to mine including chain maintainence and cable lubes. Torque on the footpeg bolts iffy; shallow threads and poor quality steel. I use blue Locktite and tighten til firmly snug and not beyond.
Nice! It's a great idea to keep a log book. Sure has helped me out many times! Cheers.
Hey Mason, thanks for the great tips. 🤙🏼
Any time!
Great video and info.... let Melon1 know I just picked up my first dual sport yesterday! A 2018 crf250l is now sitting in the shed! Warm air is coming... time to ride!
Sweet Dave :) I'll let him know! Congrats on the new ride man. You'll get a lot of good riding out of that machine! Cheers :)
That’s awesome DD congrats, you won’t be disappointed 😃
Been doing these things since mine was new in 2011. After 104k km I also reinforced the rack with larger bolts and nylon lock nuts. I've noticed also with Eagle Mikes Torque Nut, comes loose and tighten it once a month or every oil change. Also check the steering nut.
Great advise. Good idea to always go over the fasteners and I have had to tighten my steering nut too. Cheers!
Nice! planning on buying a KLR, this helps with my research. wish i'd bough it as my first bike.
Awesome! Glad it helped you out. Good luck with the search :)
Great tips Sir!!!! Thanks for sharing them!!! Cheers
Cheers Rick! : )
Thanks I will check those bolts.
Cheers Peter!
Great tips and as a new KLR owner I appreciate the advice.
Cheers Pinkie! Glad to help out if I can :)
@@masonsadv Your videos have been a huge help. Thanks!
Great vid. Just put 1000 on a 2018 and popping on Deceleration. Thanks.
Hope it helps JD. Cheers!
What a beautiful bike that is!
It belongs to DVsadventures and he is very happy with it. He was able to put quite a few miles on it last season and sure looked like he was having a blast!! Cheers Alex :)
Thanks Mason - a great demo of the big 5, but I would suggest a #6. While you have the grease out, (re)grease the steering head as well - not knowing how little grease came from the factory cost me a set of bearings.
Yes! That is great advice and something I have to do also. Cheers!
Beautiful garage!. Wish I had one.
It works well for me :) A bit small by today's standards but it forces me to try to keep it tidy 😄👍
Oooh! Free! Good stuff 👍
😁👍
Thanks!
Great tips, I have to get the rear suspension pulled apart and re lubed. for this season still. My exhaust bolts were loose right from the dealer lol. Didn't think about the peg bolts will definitely be getting on that asap. I Don't have a book to put my maintenance info in , I have been writing it down in the manual. I should start one though. My memory is like swiss cheese sometimes lol. Great info here. Thank you for sharing it.
Glad you found something useful in there :) The book has really been a life saver for me. too many bikes and equipment to keep it all sorted in my head lol. Cheers!
Desde Colombia!! Gracias por el video y aprendí mucho para mi klr650!!
Hey Juan, thanks for watching :) Cheers.
Thanks for the tips. Went down to the garage and torqued the acorn nuts on the exhaust. Just like your demo: one was in spec and the other a good quarter turn off spec. Then I ran an errrand on the bike and the exhaust popping stopped.
Perfect 🙂👍 good to go!
The book is good for documenting ft/lbs and tools you needed for a specific job. Makes it easier to make a big boy tool kit for really long trips and normal maint, you don't have to dig in the book.
Yeah Dex, exactly. I also do all the bike maintenance with the tool kit I carry rather than my shop tools, that way I know if i'm missing something and can add and remove as necessary. Cheers!
When did I become middle age. Just slipped by I guess. Nice video Mason.
Great advice!
Cheers David!
Great video thanks I had no idea why my pig was popping on decel just thought it was a carb thing.
Glad it helped 👍
Dealer said cause of poping was it was running rich but now I will tourqe header bolts. Thx. First thing that came lose for mine was the speedo cable at the wheel.
They do run rich from the factory. The KLX needle kit and an adjustment sorted mine out. Cheers!
All good tips.
Cheers AzMtn :)
Thanks Mason for this and your past videos. Just bought a 2011 KLR 650 with 6000 km
last November. Looking forward to this season. I live within an hour or a little more of your area and would be interested in knowing the location of some of the routes you ride if that information is available. I look forward to your videos and this one was very timely.
Hi Peter :) Congrats on the new ride! I don't give out routes because unfortunately, it's the fastest way to get them closed.
The best way to find routes is to head out for a morning/afternoon of exploring :) Never know what gems you will find and the lack of direction is all part of the adventure! Cheers man and enjoy :)
Hi Mason, many thanks for your video! It's a very informative, I just bought 18 klr650. Please do a part 2 video!
Awesome! I'll keep that in mind ;) Cheers
@@masonsadv thanks Mason, because of you I bought a torque wrench and get a passion for maintenance and explore my KLR
Fantastic Video! I'm sure lots of people are going to be very glad you made this! lol
Cheers! :)
I don’t own a KLR, but I thoroughly enjoyed the video.
Perfect! haha, Cheers Antonio 😄👍
Love the tips
Thanks guys! Cheers :)
Nice looking KLR!
Thank you! 🙂👍
Great tips! 👍
Cheers Rob!
Good stuff Thx Bro
Cheers man!
Another home run Mason ✅
Cheers FC!
Thanks
🙂👍
The book good idea I will do the same 👍
It really helps out as time passes ;)
Good job!
Cheers Keith!
Great video.
Thanks mickster!
I got an old 2007/2009 kl650e and just looking at things I can do to it to make it a bit better since I'm new to riding
Awesome! Enjoy :)
Well done
Thanks, I hope its useful to you guys :)
That’s true cheap and good
Good tips for any bike
Yes I am going to check my exhaust nuts!!! My 2 Stroke has springs “yep springs still there” 😂
Cheers! and yes! Most of these do carry over across brands and styles. Are you riding yet?
The 1st few things i would do to those bikes is after market pipe open up the air box - carb upgrades nice big screen- a fork brace set of dunlop tires nice bigger 1 on the back if possible then after who knows ride the sucker there's lots and lots u can do to these bikes i no a guy bought 1 new after doing a bunch of things to it like i mentioned and more 11 grand thats nuts in my opinion i dont no supposely u can rak the k's on them pretty reliable so maybe there worth it i remember the klr back in 84 0r 85 i think a guy had a 600 yes a 600 then in 87 i think he bough a Tengai it was blue and white 600 or 650 i forget but 3'999 out the door ya not 8 grand
Thanks I found this video just in time to have to pull my airbox and repair it with plastic Bond. I will never purchase a new to me bike again without checking the torque on the exhaust bolts
If you don't put the engine to TDC where the slack is in the chain it doesn't do anything when you loosen the dohickey cause the chain would be tight if it's in-between.
Boy I'm not sure what I would do if my XR had a doo hickey.I still watched even though I have a XR. ""RIDE ON""
You'd just adjust it like the rest of us, haha ;) Thanks for watching Eagle Rider! Cheers :)
My exhaust clamp bolt liberated itself at some point and I didn't notice until I had the bike apart to adjust the valves. Used a spare bolt I had and a healthy blob of Loctite. KLR = Keep Loctite Ready
That's one of ones you need to keep an eye on for awhile ;) That and the manifold nuts. Glad you were able to catch it before it melted the airbox! Cheers Techy Dog :)
Awesome video i just subscribe, what size torque wrench should I get for doin work on my klr getting one in a week a used one
I lost a foot peg bolt once. I believe it was M8x30 and I replaced it with a 35
Nice fix Zane. Cheers!
I got 220K+ in some of the nastiest trails. watched the damn bike tumble down a 200 ft hill with the plastic bits flying everywhere! submerged it under ice cold water for 6 hours! got stuck on a really gnarly trail for 9 hours and ended up giving a couple of guys on 250s some gas and still had gas getting back to the site. yea i trust these bike with my life.
Now that sounds like a story! Glad you were ok and found some help 👍 It's nice knowing you can prepare and repair most things trail side on the old KLR ;) Cheers Andy
@@masonsadv thanks masons ADV yea its been a history with my klr. We have seen the hardest and best of times. Here in Colorado but through Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, California, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, Nebraska, kansas, and missouri. i know the bike will do it! i have already liked and subscribed to the beautiful content man thanks for giving it and i will stay tuned.
i am trying to contact swankycat to come to Colorado we have beautiful trails here in Colorado and i think he should experience them. we also have cabins that whom ever would like can come stay at. my main profession is as a contractor and i am remodeling our cabins from the 1800s to todays standards but trying to keep the 1800s feel to them. here in colorado we have much to explore. so if your ever in the states hit me up! i can give you a very discounted place to stay in the mountains and trails here in co.
great video keep it up. what do you think about the 10 gallon IMS tank?
Thanks :) I think it looks cool but I have never needed any more fuel than what the klr carries plus the fuel jug I use for my stove. the guys I ride with call me their fuel tanker lol. Having said that, We are looking at a stretch of trail next year that may take me close to empty ;) Cheers!
Great info!! I know I took notes! Your maintenance log is....wow...I've kept track of the oil changes, but nothing near your records. Awesome idea, though!
My book started out as just a maintenance log but it quickly became a supplement manual as I collected info on valve checks, torque specs and other maintenance items, lol. It's almost time for volume II :D Cheers Ron
Awesome video, Mason thanks. Which manual do you use for maintenance? I just got 22 Klr abs model.
The Clymer manual and the forums online are very helpful too.
Great information. What do you use for grease on the suspension parts and where can I get the maintenance manual you use? I just got my new klr this spring and want to check everything for the break in period. I would love to see more maintenance videos from you.
Hey Superbee, any good quality grease will work there. It's not a spinning part like a wheel bearing but it does need to move freely. If you're going to remove the UniTrak pivot, loosening the rear motor mount makes it a lot easier ;)This is the manual I use amzn.to/2YkWpzS
and I cover the rear suspension maintenance in more depth here ua-cam.com/video/SdvDkdco1CY/v-deo.html
Love your channel. Looks like no centerstand? Thoughts on that? Thanks 🤙
No I don't have one Jon. I have a stand in the shop and a prop if needed for the trails. The extra weight combined with the likely hood of it catching on stuff on the trails makes it not for me. They do have their place though and some are quite well built. Cheers!
I always back the bolts off before torque wrenching. . If real fussy a dab of oil under bolt head in order to avoid Friction giving a false reading . I will keep an eye on those exhaust bolts now . Favourite nut and bolt shop for decent high tensile footpeg bolts too by the sound of it . Mine is a camo too ,that was funny . Cheers and thanks again.
Nice Rod, Yeah the high tensile bolts for the footpegs is a good idea :) Cheers!
I had a 07 KLR, I couldn't keep the foot peg bolts tight, after every long off road ride they'd be loose, the mounts flex too much backing the bolts off. I welded the foot peg brackets to the frame to fix it, if your heavy and stand up a lot its the way to go as there's no reason to ever take them off anyway.
@@nseric1233 just don't weld high tensile steel ! Bolts or other , it doesn't work, cheers and thanks.
Nothing was high tensile steel, the mounts and frame are plain old mild steel. I put about 15000kms on the bike after welding em without issue.
@@nseric1233 no problem mate ,was not suggesting you did ,just something learnt . Rebuilding an old TT500 Yamaha and did something similar to peg mounts on that, cheers bro .
