@@fivewattworld It can be very loud for sure. Covers a lot of ground. It is a beautiful amp. Could be all I ever need in the amp department. I’m not quite retired yet, but close. My same tho it’s exactly. When I ordered my Big Verb I told Dan that I’m buying way out of my league but being a bit older and having some coin in my pocket, why not!!??
I use my Mesa Express Plus 5:50 in five watt mode . It has multiple channels, graphic, effects loop, and just by flipping a few switches I can get over 16 tones without turning a knob. Suits my needs perfectly
well as someone who can't justify or afford boutique type amps or expensive guitars. I am a off the shelf type player and I must say my recent purchase of the Monoprice Stage right 15w amp has been a sweet find. very impressed for the price, even in cdn money. great channel, thanks for taking the time to make these great videos.
All of the sounds were good and very usable from what i could tell. I have watched that same interview with Dave Cobb and his advice on tweed amps. He loves all the music we love and knows his stuff. I would take any and all advice he is willing to give us. When you attempted to get the Neil Young tweed Deluxe sound, that's the stuff right there! Glorious tone! I would also make the comment that the PRS David Grissom model guitar you are using for the demo is probably better than 80% of the guitars out there. Thanks for what you are doing and the great demo. I have learned a ton from watching this channel!
My favorite amp at the moment is a home built, I call the S3-515 it uses a 12AX7, either 6V6 or 6L6 using a switch setting and a 5Y3 rectifier. The speaker is a Jenson P12Q. The sound is real punchy and tight and if I ever need more power I change to the 6L6. I have heard the old Fender amps and this is very close to the sound, so I think I'll stay with my own brand for now.
My favourite* 5W amp is the Blackstar HT5R and I have replaced the speaker with a Celestion Greenback. *I haven't played any other 5W amps but have used large Marshalls for years :)
Keith, I enjoy your videos. Thanks for posting. To answer your question on this Video. I was a Vibroux guy for many years, having 62' Chocolate with the Magic Vibrato. Amazing amp, Then a 64' Vibrolux Amp, Blew up on a gig, and it's been retired. in 1991" I bought a 63' Vibroverb Reissue which immediately received a change from 2 X 10 stock Oxfords, to a Pair of mid 50's Jensen P12Q's mounted on a Hammond Tone Cabinet solid core baffle. I even used the Oxblood Grilcloth to enhance the Chocolate Look. A few Custom Vibrolux Reissues along the way. Now that I hit that dreaded 60yr old milestone, And not interested in destroying any more vertebra... I've discovered the Fender VibroChamp XD and SuperChamp Xd's. Together they sound every bit as good as those RI Vibrolux's. The VibroChamp XD is perect for the House, the Super Champ works extemely well for rehearsal and Drummer included gigs. All without the weight issues. BTW, Although I have several Telecasters, a 83' Squier all modded up is my Gig Guitar. Don't wish to loose any of the real ones. Jay Montrose Vintigue Bridge and Knobs, along with a WBS Guitar Neck Joint System , keeps everything in pitch and proper resonance. No tone cap and the Guitar Volume stays at 10. My hands do the rest. There you have it... Keep up the great work...Be good "TWANG!!!""
Thanks for sharing all of this. I really dig the XD's and have only narrowly escaped having getting one of the years. Same with the Squire Vibe guitars. I'm half way through the script for the Jazzmaster video and I get to thinking, "well those J. Mascis Squires are only $399 new over on Sweetwater." It's like that scene from Monty Python where the waiter is saying, (French accent) "Just one thin mint monsieur."
@@fivewattworld The 83' Squier is MIJ. I removed all of the hardware, and started from scratch. CTS pots, Centralab Switch, Solid Core 58' Wire from a Hammond M1, Gotoh SD9105M Gears, Jay Montrose Bridge, that notched one. Montrose Heavy Knurled Knobs, standard output jack cup, with switchcraft output jack. WBS neck Joint System all done in the mid 1990's. As a platform to build from, these are wonderful instruments. If I loose it or someone steals it, I'll simply build another. Almost forgot, Changed the White guard for a 5 hole Black Guard over Blonde, that has turned to a Odd-Shade of Yellow.
I'm catching up on your videos being new to the ch. But MAN! That combination of your guitar and that amp sound good. I'm seeing gear I never knew existed. I gotta get out more
Thanks for sharing how this amp works - I see why you like it. Nice to hear it in a band mix, and nice playing there. My favourite low wattage amp is my 58 Fender Champ, recently refurbished; what a charmer. I pair it with a contemporary Blues Deluxe. I realise that sounds nuts, but at matched low to moderate volumes, the Champ’s about-to-breakup soulfulness pairs nicely with the more visceral lows you get from a bigger speaker. And at louder volumes, the Champ makes enough noise to be heard in a mix with the bigger amp. I call it the Beauty and the Beast rig, and it makes a lovely warm bath of sound.
Hi, I just stumbled upon 5WW. I love the premis. As a new player, it's easy to get caught up in all the fancy gear hype. Thx to this channel, I'm trying to find value with minimal used gear. My Ep. Sheraton and Bugera V5 Inf. give me plenty of tone options and room to grow for only about $500. ... Use it up, wear it out, fix it up or do without!
There are a lot of great options these days. I think all you need is a good amp, a few pedals, and a couple of guitars. I'm coming out of the world of modelers and cheap guitars and my long-term plan for gear is to only have a core PRS, an American Elite Tele, a Fender Twin, and an EVH 5150 III 50w (all will be purchased used). Those are solid pieces of gear that will always be exactly what they are and can't become obsolete like modern digital junk.
I'm with you. Trying to be mimimaliat. MX Fender Strat,, Epi Sheraton & Bugera V5. I'd like to be able to record with minimal gear. So USB MIC seems ideal if I can find one that don't suck
Odin Anderson A USB mic could be ok, Rode and Blue both make some, but you might be better served buying a two channel interface and a couple of really good mics. I recommend a Focusrite Clarett 2pre USB as a great interface for the money. The most classic mic combination is a Shure SM57 and a Royer 121. A 57 is extremely affordable and can usually be found used for about $30. The Royer is way too expensive, so the Cascade Fathead is a much loved and much cheaper alternative to get a similar sound. Check Reverb for everything I mentioned above. It should cost you less than $500 for all three pieces and then you will have a quality setup for recording any guitar amp. I'm actually not going to record amps though when I get the Twin and 5150; I'm going to run my amps through a reactive load box (the Radial Headload) and then run the line out from that into my interface and use impulse responses just as Keith is doing in this video. It allows silent recording if you need and much greater flexibility because then I can have the sound of any mic and any cab on my recordings.
Thx for all the advice. I ended up getting a used Gen 1 Scarlet 2i2, with a used e609 mic for the amp. Pretty minimal with a little room for expansion.
I have 3 amps in the 5 watt range: a Bugera V5 combo, a Vox AC4 and a Bugera T5 head. The Vox doesn't have a reverb channel which is how I stumbled across the V5. They all are adjusted output so I can turn the output to .1 watt and saturate the front end at lower volumes. The tubes are EL-84s which match the tone of my AC-30, so I can easily match my tone.
I think I am the only person whole loves the sound drowned up with reverb, I love to swim in that slop all day. My favourite small wttage amp is the CARR slant 6v lol, talk about bells and whistles.
Keith , this was particularly valuable to me as I live in a small terraced house so small amps really interest me these days. I got a 40w combo I used to gig with but that be WAY too loud to do justice to it at home without a lynch mob of neighbours baying for my blood .
Hi G, yes this is a very cool little amp, but it still gets pretty loud. I think the real at home solution is probably headphones and I haven’t come across the small and comical solution for that yet. Maybe the little Yamaha desktop amps. They seem to be the solution for so many, or the little Boss Katana as you can turn that dow SO low and have the same sounds.
@@fivewattworld Yeah my research is leading me to several mini amps and the katana is great but I'm leaning toward a small watt vox as I prefer their tone . Proof will be on my next highly anticipated store visit when I can hear some if the small amps in a live situation .
Dan is excellent to work with, he brought my '63 Reverberocket back to life a few years ago and it's been sounding great ever since, and I was surprised to see FYD here!
Well done video, my brother from another mother! I heartily agree that Dan's designs are wonderful for a casual player like myself or the more experienced. I look forward to more from FWW!
I get the 5 watt idea! Of course, it it was solid state, it would be 15 watts, since tube power is so much more so than solid state. As to my fav tube amp, I'd have to say the 60's Fender Vibro-Champ. All it really needed was a master volume and a mid in the eq. The tone was priceless and awesome!
Such a great channel. Thanks for the content. You’ve had such a cool journey so far. Nice instrumental near the end. Really moody and made me imagine a ton of extra layers!
Wow a whole lot of static noise - ok saw your graceful acknowledgement below. Nothing beats a mike in front of the amp... Putting in such an evolved tone stack in a small amp takes away a lot of the gain. 3:32 tube rectified amps don't need a standby switch. That switch is only there to avoid a big surge of high voltage on the tubes when the filaments have not lit up yet, which is the case if you have solid state rectification of the high voltage. A tube rectifier will also have to get its filament lit before it can provide the high voltage to the plates of the other tubes. Bought a Blackfaced Super Reverb 10 years ago, paid 1300 EUR -- this little Champ is 1750USD and even got the 10" speaker. Great video, but a single ended amp will always have its own recognizable and very cool sound, but it's not a push pull like the Super Reverb or the Deluxe.
Yeah, it was my first video and I had some problems with the gear and the audio interface when I made this. The good news is that virtually all the other demos on the channel are also using this amp. So there are lots of places to hear the BV here at five watt world. Thanks for watching. Keith
I've never heard one of Dans amps. I have seen them in person when he did a repair for me, but never got to hear one of them. There needs to be more of this.
I agree! I went through a period years ago where I was learning about building amps. So I have actually have six different amps that he and I built together. I'd had this idea for a small amp with reverb for a long time and had collected the parts. Finally Dan wanted to do it so I handed over the parts and he made this amazing little amp that really does most all of what I need playing at home. I plan to do more demos of his amps. We're currently getting ready to recab one of his "MarCh" amps, a 5 watt Marshall style amp putting it into the same cab as the Big Verb is in. So that should be coming in the next month. I also have a unique 18 Watt Matchless style head he designed, a clone of a late 50's Gibson GA40, one of his "Desk Top Champ" amps with the separate tube driven effects loop and finally a bass head that is half of an old Ampeg B-15 flip top but in a Champ sized chassis. I call Dan "Yoda". He has so much information in that head of his. He's an amazing resource.
Great video, sounds like a terrific amp. I'm using a Peavey Classic 30 tube amplifier. It's heavy but compact and I've upgraded the tubes and speaker and had a three way toggle switch with a srandby and a mini toggle switch that cuts off two EL84s reducing the power. With spring reverb, overdrive channel and FX loop it's a handy amp that I've had for 22 years but I plugged my Les Paul into a Vox AC10 and it sounded terrific.
IDK about everyone saying don't turn a tweed past 4. There is something cool about gettin that 6v6 roasting a lil. That Saggy, tweedy power tube thing that cleans up. I'm sure these recording legends know exactly how to dial 'their sound', but for me, let that power tube out of the bag now and then. Killer PRS BTW.
Great video Keith ! Certainly agree that the FYD Big Verb is very versatile - great presentation of illustrating that ! Especially liked the Neil Young sound!
Just found your channel and I love it. I also have a love for prs Guitars and low wattage amps. I am currently using a Morgan 5 watt head, sounds beautiful paired with a ryra klone, also a mccarty 594 & 513. Keep the great content coming!
Hi Anthony, Glad you found your way here! I really dig the 513's in particular. I have never had my hands on a 5 watt Morgan. The 5 watts I have were either built by FYD Amps in Burlington, VT or by me (under his strict supervision, :) I've just discovered Strandberg Guitars and am transitioning from the PRS's but don't imagine I'll ever leave my 5 watters behind. Thanks for commenting. Building a five watt community here.
My favorite low-wattage amp: 5F1 tweed champ (mine has a 12" ceramic speaker) or 5F11 tweed Vibrolux (mine has a 10" ceramic speaker). I couldn't afford Alnico speakers when I had them built, and felt these would better suit my needs anyway, as I prefer for my breakup to come from the tubes rather than the speaker. Still, I hope to try some Alnico speakers one day.
Kieth, I noticed that as you adjusted the three knobs that control the tone stack, the aural response was remarkable. Normally, when adjusting the same on one of my Marshalls or one of my Egnaters, the response is more subtle than pronounced. Why does that amp’s tone stack have such a pronounced effect on the frequency content, respective to what each knob is purposed to affect?
The tone stack in a Marshall is in a different place in the gain stages, and that's why it has less effect. Any Fender style amp will give you a wider response to swings in the tone circuit compared to a Marshall circuit. Very observant.
five watt world Thank you for the kudos and the explanation Kieth. I recall the tone stack topologies between Fender & Marshall are different, but I didn’t know how they were different or how that would influence the relative efficacy of the tone controls.
This amp sounds pretty good, I'm going to give one a go. Right now, my fav 5w is my 1976 Vibro Champ I was lucky enough to get for 250.00 about 2 years ago. To bad I was 15 min late or I might have been able to get the '67 Strat it was paired with. Either way, with my Tele, LP or 335. This amp can git er' done.
Fantastic video, enough info for the pros without leaving the uninitiated in the dark, I absolutely loved the band portion of the video, the music was almost zen like. Listening on plantronics pro wireless. Congratulations!
Thanks for the kind words. There is something so simple about that tune that brings out the minimalist player in me. Guitar players often struggle to not play too much and this kind of tune helps. Thanks again.
It definitely has that Neil Young 'On The Beach' era sound to it. I have no idea about different amps. I used to use a Fender Bassman through a single ten inch celestion speaker and more recently I've used a Vox AC 15, but I know Young used Fender amps so maybe that's why I'm hearing that 'On The Beach'/'Cortez The Killer' tone. Oh...I've just got to the part in the video where you talk about Neil Young's amp. All makes sense now. Lovely sounding amp. Thanks. Love your channel.
1:45 - how would a smaller output transformer change the wattage? Other than melting sooner it should have the same wattage as the output tube(s) - right?
The wattage is measured after the output transformer. If the transformer is small the magnetic transfer of energy can saturate the iron causing the wattage to go up to a certain point and then stop. The effect of small transformers is especially noticable in the bass frequencies and is more pronounced on single ended output stages like the Fender Champ and most 5 watt amplifiers.
My favorite low wattage amp is my own design has two tubes a 12ax7 and a 6l6 switches between 16,8,4 ohms has a gain and a master output control and has a treble mid and bass controls plus a power switch and a standby switch and on lite indicator
I've owned only one low-wattage tube amp, a Vox AC4BL, and I love it, especially since I got it used for just $150. I do like using a few pedals with it - needs some delay or reverb, and I use a Blues Driver clone and a 70s Rat.
For my LP's I have the Marshall Class 5 Custom Pin up, for the Fenders I'm using the Blues IV 15w, maybe I'll look I to a 5 or 10 watt 2 channel acoustic amp for my Taylor just not too sure which amp to get.
VHT Special 6 Ultra is a great low watt amp - sparkling cleans thru creamy overdrive to full crunch on the ultra channel. Worth a look if you can find one.
I had one of these, it came alive after replacing the cheap Chinese tubes but I wound up trading it in for a Yamaha THR 10C because my wife claimed it was way too loud, the attenuator helped but then all I heard was overdrive.
I have a pair of them and I love them. Im running EL 84s and the breakup is just fantastic. They are all hand wired and real easy to work on too. I'd do a demo but I don't have anything besides my phone for production and nobody has time for videos like that.
It was actually a bit rate mismatch w my old Two Notes Torpedo live. I didn’t know how to use the gear yet really. Enthusiasm ahead of knowledge in this case.
I have a 5 watt fender tube amp, it's not the best sounding champ 600 but I like enough with a Tele or Gretsch for in home practice at lower volumes, it's not as sweet sounding as my fender super champ X2 but it's gets the job done as vintage decor furniture when not in use 😉
Is it one of the newer Champ 600 amps that they reissued? What do you think of it? Besides the solid state rectifier is it that far off from other "vintage" style 5 watt amps you've heard? Will it take pedals well? Thanks in advance for any reply.
Those are amazing little amps. I like VHT as a company as well with their amps that you can use different tubes in. Love that experimental stuff (and love old tubes of course.) Plenty of wattage. You should be good. :) Keith
I'd like to hear the pedals into the Big Verb - without an fx loop, do you include any modulation pedals like chorus, flanger, trem or Leslie trem? and put those at the end of the chain after the distortion or compressors? Thanks for some great history videos and keep them coming. Maybe you have one on the ES335?
I’ve used the BV for the few pedal demos I’ve done on the channel. Not as many on modulation besides the Corona chorus video. The 335 is on the history list.
Sounds great! and I like your presentation, just letting the amp tones thru without a bunch of endless noodling and string bending etc. I want to live in a 5 watt world !
My favorite 5 - 15W tube amps include the Fender Super Champ X2, Blackstar HT-5 (head version) , my Vox AC 4C1 - BL & this FYD Big Verb which I now must have thanks to you...damn you Good Sir! Lol Great demo Keith Thanks!! 😎🎸🔊🎶🤘
"Just a guitar player helping other guitar players spend money." Or so the paraphrase goes from my motorcycle days. That's a pretty nice group of small amps. I'm sure if you spend 30 minutes with your Big Verb you'll feel better about me as a person. :) Enjoy it. I play mine everyday. Keith
Keith I would buy that amp in a heartbeat and give all the credit to you Good Sir...it’s a great sound amp and I dig the small features like the reverb knob in the back... subtle but effective...
LiveToPlayGuitar Oh sorry , I thought you were saying you already have a Big Verb. Dan has sold some since the Champ video came out. They are amazing but I’d be the last guy to say that any one piece of gear is the holy grail. You’ve got some great stuff there. Enjoy what you have. It’s the playing that matters most.
My favourite amp is my Tex Amps Mini Bernie. It's a 15 watt 10' combo built by a Toronto amp builder Tony Texiera. It's based on a Filmosound projector circuit. It's loud and full sounding, shockingly so especially for it's small size. It's worth checking out his amps. Jeff Tweedy owns a Tex amp that he usually pairs with his Vox onstage. TexAmps.com
Good ears. Actually, it was a problem with my Two Notes running at a different rate than Pro Tools. I sorted it when I was working on the next video. But yeah man, good ears.
@@fivewattworld My Laney had that sound and it drove me nuts trying to find out what it was, finally figured it out. It has those wire retainers that tap the tubes. Hate those things... haha
Great work on your videos. I have learned much and continue to check in with FWW offerings. This amp is definitely versatile with fine tones and piqued my interest. Bonus to get the blackface and tweed in one combo. Does the 10" speaker choice sacrifice low end? For my five watt amps I use a 12 watt Carr Skylark based on the Fender Harvard with a built in attenuator that can bring it down to less than a watt for a beautiful clean amp with great tones at low levels. Pricy but a fine handmade amp. I also use a Marshall Jubilee 20-5W, and a Blackstar HT-20-2W with clean channels that cascade into more distortion working under five watts. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Hi Keith! I would really like to hear the FYD Big Verb with your current production techniques. I'm currently "elimination processing", taking out what I have no enjoyment in and/or doesn't play to my strengths. I keep coming back to Fender Reverbs and this has such a wide variety of tones and subtle levels of control.
Hi JL. I should do a video using this amp for Dan. This deserves a redo. I’m going to ship him mine, which is the prototype for the current upgrades. Maybe when it comes home.
Thanks a lot. Now I gotta go down the cellar and dig up, what... 'Live Rust' so I can hear the version I like. I hope the stylus didn't get mucked when we moved. He was playing through an old Tweed Twin on that tour I think.
Good morning Keith. I recently started watching your videos and I have to say I'm hooked, your information and presentation are amazing. I do not own a practice amp instead I have two Crate 2 x12s one Turbo Valve 120 and one GT 212 bothered amazing ....but very loud. I am awaiting delivery of the new Spark 40 amp from Positive Grid, I have seen many reviews vut would really be interested in your thoughts. Thank you for making these great videos, keep them comming.
@@fivewattworld No problem, never know till you ask. I hope it will fill the role of practice amp for me without being too over top like my Crates. Thank you for your response.
Yeah, I would have liked to have seen that played around with a bit, and also heard at least one single coil guitar through there to really judge it. Tele or Strat, type, any brand.
Loving this little amp. Thinking about ordering one! I have a Tungsten Cream of Wheat but end of cutting her down with a Dr. Z brake eventhough I only play with my volume at about 2. Lol. I thought about a 12" version? Have you compared the 10" vs 12"? Thoughts?
Thanks Keith! Love the channel. I don't think I can swing a FYD but have been looking hard at Fender's 68 Custom Vibro Champ reissue as well as 57 Champ reissue. Play mostly clean w/modulation. Really like the VC but realize the champ is higher pedigree of amp. Also looked at Pro Jr but I think my wife would appreciate 5watts more than 15watts. Anyone have thoughts on any of these amps?
Fender sent me one and I’ve just started checking it out. It’s cool but that’s from a “champ guy.” See Zac Child’s review over on Ask Zac. He’s a “Deluxe guy” and he really likes his.
@@fivewattworld Fair- digging watching the new content! Just was curious on your thoughts on Quilters since they seem to line up with the channel's mission. Maybe this kinda fits into talk of helix and such that fits into the essentialism videos?
Blue Lane Frontier I don’t own a Quilter but have played 5 different models, they are great for solid state amps. In fact sound better than some tube amps. I would say the weaker tones would be the cleans, not quite the earth and bloom of a good tube amp. I think a Quilter and some great pedals sound better than the digital modelers.
Understand what you are talking, what a fab amp,, I've been using a 15 watt dsl marshal 6v6s , on the gain channel I have it mildly saturated then vol up , then back the volume off on the guitar and get this wonderful blues tone I havnt found in other amps
I must apologize, I really wanted to get into the hype built up in the video, but this sound is what makes modeling amps popular...I must be missing something, because I like the sounds at the title card (0:25) and the end (15:25) but all the small amp sounds shown in the video sound like dissapointment. Not clean, muddy, buzzy/tinny, boxy and "small"...what am I missing that everyone loves about small "old" amps? (I was very interested by all the words spoken in this video, even wanted to go shopping for one, until I actually heard the amp sounds). Again, I do not want to offend, but learn. I have never owned big tube amps (currently have a Yamaha THR10) and have always dreamed of having big sounds. In theory I 100% agree with everything this channel stands for, but for low volume doesn't the answer equal modeling amps?
It was my first video, ever. It’s a great amp but I didn’t do it justice. The other videos made that year were all the BV, and I think they sound much better as I learned what I was doing.
Love it ,,, how much??? I wonder if that tweed thing is like a raw. Probably is. Could do the raw by wiring the mid .,,,,cranking the mid to 8 and from there bleeds the tone stack out. Kind of like a champ.have a look at allen amps. Dave allen does some very nice rigs that support different tube types.
Hi Russell, You should reach out to Dan on pricing. We know David and have used some of his hardware for years. The OT in my Big Verb is from him and it will run either 6v6 or 6l6 class tubes (Dan's been digging a 5881 in his lately.) I don't know how David wires his "raw" feature but Dan's defeats the tone stack but Dan's been tweaking it so it does flab out at higher volumes. Again, talking to the man himself about that. Thanks for the comment. Really appreciate that you took the time. Keith

really like that you put this demo vid into a band setting..thx man, and may your 2021 be great!
Home built cannot be beat.
I have enjoyed all of your videos and will continue to watch the new ones. Thank you Keith!
Your back RO video 1 Ric! Great amp, pretty poor video of it, but I’ve played it on most of the other early videos.
Thanks. They all were good videos, even the bass ones I didn’t think I would watch, but glad I did.
Just ordered my Big Verb. CAN’T WAIT!!!
I'm sold. Fyd is right up the road a way.
My favourite* 5W amp is the Blackstar HT5R and I have replaced the speaker with a Celestion Greenback.
*I haven't played any other 5W amps but have used large Marshalls for years :)
Great choice of songs. One of my favs.
I gotta get out more
The simple Champ circuit with a tube driven reverb (and vintage tubes throughout) is a pretty magical combination to be sure.
Admirably clear and straightforward demo of the settings. I would like to hear other reviews/demos do as well.
Welcome to five watt world Odin!
I could listen to that NY lead and rhythm for hours....may I suggest Like a Hurricane in one of your future demo's....thanks
I’m a big fan of the ac10c1. Great all arounder. I have two...
Dan is excellent to work with, he brought my '63 Reverberocket back to life a few years ago and it's been sounding great ever since, and I was surprised to see FYD here!
Dan is one of my oldest and best friends. He also just happens to be one of the top builders in the country. :)
Just picked up a supro blues king 8. It’s a one watt tube amp with very nice cleans and nice overdrive.
Well done video, my brother from another mother! I heartily agree that Dan's designs are wonderful for a casual player like myself or the more experienced. I look forward to more from FWW!
Yep, Dan's the Wizard, Yoda, the architect (vague Matrix reference there.)
Cortez the Killer...... sweet. Learning so much about everything gear related on this chan. Cheers!
Thanks John! Welcome to five watt world!
Keith
Hey Keith. I've jumped right back to the beginning. Wasn't expecting to hear Cortez The Killer! Beautiful.
That's a pint sized killer.Great sounding amp there.
Champ, as a class A amp it just breaks up sooooo nicely!
Do you have an old one? I’m looking at Fender’s hand-wired 57 Custom Champ.
I would like the hear the amp cranked, and how the guitar volume interacts with the amp.
"The most music from the least gear". Then proceeds to make his point by bringing out both his PRS David Grissom signature guitars. Love it.
Everyone’s definition of “least” is different brother.
@@fivewattworld I know my friend.
I had a 1950 something Electro combo with a 6" speaker. What a beast, whoever's got it now, I hope your rockin'
he came dancing across the water with his galleons and guns
IDK about everyone saying don't turn a tweed past 4. There is something cool about gettin that 6v6 roasting a lil. That Saggy, tweedy power tube thing that cleans up. I'm sure these recording legends know exactly how to dial 'their sound', but for me, let that power tube out of the bag now and then. Killer PRS BTW.
Great demo of a very versatile and tasty sounding amp!
Great sounding amp and playing by you sir!!! Makes me want to drive to Vermont and buy heavy things that make pretty noises!
Great video Keith ! Certainly agree that the FYD Big Verb is very versatile - great presentation of illustrating that ! Especially liked the Neil Young sound!
The amp actually can be cranked up even more actually. It can capture that "ready to explode" thing that Neil goes to on occasion. Rockin'!
The 5 watts I have were either built by FYD Amps in Burlington, VT or by me (under his strict supervision, :)
I've just discovered Strandberg Guitars and am transitioning from the PRS's but don't imagine I'll ever leave my 5 watters behind.
Thanks for commenting. Building a five watt community here.
Cortez the Killer amp! I like this amp!
Just got an email from Dan saying my Big Verb is on its way. Can’t wait!!
Oh man!
Fender Princeton reverb original 1965 because it's the only guitar amp I've ever kept
Aaron Pounders - makes sense. Thanks
My favorite low wattage amp is my own design has two tubes a 12ax7 and a 6l6 switches between 16,8,4 ohms has a gain and a master output control and has a treble mid and bass controls plus a power switch and a standby switch and on lite indicator
Nice amp ! There are so many great builders now ! In the Fender camp , Red Plate makes a great amp . As does Fat Jimmy amps . Thanks for the review
I've owned only one low-wattage tube amp, a Vox AC4BL, and I love it, especially since I got it used for just $150. I do like using a few pedals with it - needs some delay or reverb, and I use a Blues Driver clone and a 70s Rat.
Great work man. Just gave the prototype a spin myself.
Ah, it just got "home" to Dan. That's the very amp in this video though in person it is another whole level of cool of course.
Yeah Keith!! Would love to see a video of this amp with peddles you would choose. That would be AWESOME!!!
Well Dan has the Bigverb in VT now. So you can check in with him on that.
For my LP's I have the Marshall Class 5 Custom Pin up, for the Fenders I'm using the Blues IV 15w, maybe I'll look I to a 5 or 10 watt 2 channel acoustic amp for my Taylor just not too sure which amp to get.
Great amp... but I couldn’t even find it on his website...or even pricing for his other amps.
I remember Cortez this so-called Thanksgiving. My emotions overshadow all.
VHT Special 6 Ultra is a great low watt amp - sparkling cleans thru creamy overdrive to full crunch on the ultra channel. Worth a look if you can find one.
I’ve heard of them. Would be worth a review. Thanks!
That's a great little amp!!
Hearing a drone, possibly filament vibration. Changes a bit with volume. Needs a tweak or two.
I just got a Milkman Pint 10W combo in a trade for a Maz junior 2x10 with an Alnico speaker. Man O man do I love this thing!!!!!!
I love your videos so much! Have you thought about doing a history of the Hammond B3 with a Leslie? Thanks again for all your content!
The B3 and the Rhodes are on the list.
I like the box mini g32 cause of the gain control and the compression control
great vids.....my poor mans low watt is my VHT special 6...on half power in low gain jack.....lot of people never heard of these amps.....
Those are amazing little amps. I like VHT as a company as well with their amps that you can use different tubes in. Love that experimental stuff (and love old tubes of course.)
Plenty of wattage. You should be good. :)
Keith
I'd like to hear the pedals into the Big Verb - without an fx loop, do you include any modulation pedals like chorus, flanger, trem or Leslie trem? and put those at the end of the chain after the distortion or compressors? Thanks for some great history videos and keep them coming. Maybe you have one on the ES335?
I’ve used the BV for the few pedal demos I’ve done on the channel. Not as many on modulation besides the Corona chorus video.
The 335 is on the history list.
Great vid. Thanks for putting these together. I'd like to see a vid about pedals, yes... and I'd also like to see you smile during it! :P
this amp sounds bad tho ? muddy and terrible distortion
Sounds great! and I like your presentation, just letting the amp tones thru without a bunch of endless noodling and string bending etc. I want to live in a 5 watt world !
The great thing Matt is you get to choose. Welcome aboard.
Enjoy it.
Keith I’ve had a lot of gear come and go over the years and at age 61 I’m just glad my fingers still work and I have a full head of hair...
TexAmps.com
I'd like to see this as a pedal platform, please?
Is that a tube retainer rattling?
Not the deluxe? His ‘59?
@@fivewattworld I'm glad I remember seeing him at all.
I haven’t played them at this point. Sorry I can’t help.
@@fivewattworld No problem, never know till you ask. I hope it will fill the role of practice amp for me without being too over top like my Crates. Thank you for your response.
I like the idea of a reverb dwell control, I wish my late 70s Super Reverb had one.
You can have it added by a qualified tech like Lurie.
@@fivewattworld Thank you, I will.
I think can safely say by now that all 5 watt amps are surprisingly loud ^_^
Now I've GOT to listen to Live Rust
Thanks for the great content
Live Rust !
I have a. Bugera v5 , 5 watt amp and even at .1 watt it is Fing Loud. Forget about trying 5 watts. It is too damn loud.
Ha! True enough, but you don't HAVE to turn it all the way up, :).
@@fivewattworld but the sounds better loud. Too muddy at low vols
I have a couple of Bugera amps; the V5 combo and a T5 head which will push a 2x12 cabinet. ✌
Will this amp do a rockabilly tone with a delay pedal?
All day long. I have a friend that gigs a pair of champs for that stuff.
9:32 Tonal bliss
Nice FYD! Any chance you'll discuss Quilter amps on 5WW? Seems perfect for the theme of the channel.
I've sort of moved away from doing demos lately. I'm really enjoying doing the histories and these "essentialism" pieces.
Bravo K.W. !! Nicely done.....subscribed! jl
Thanks Jeff. Dan's built bigger amps but he's not built better amps.
Agreed!!
He came dancing across the water.
I'm on a tweed deluxe obsession
Love it ,,, how much??? I wonder if that tweed thing is like a raw. Probably is. Could do the raw by wiring the mid .,,,,cranking the mid to 8 and from there bleeds the tone stack out. Kind of like a champ.have a look at allen amps. Dave allen does some very nice rigs that support different tube types.
Hi Russell, You should reach out to Dan on pricing.
We know David and have used some of his hardware for years. The OT in my Big Verb is from him and it will run either 6v6 or 6l6 class tubes (Dan's been digging a 5881 in his lately.)
I don't know how David wires his "raw" feature but Dan's defeats the tone stack but Dan's been tweaking it so it does flab out at higher volumes. Again, talking to the man himself about that.
Thanks for the comment. Really appreciate that you took the time.

@@fivewattworld yeah i,m a life long pro drummer but love the amps!! I,ve been studing the black arts on amp building. I want to build a 22 and 35 watt princeton in a deluxe cab with a brown channel and black,,,,, just for fun. But a weak princeton reverb with iron for ten to twelve watts would be my bedroom stadium amp. I like the fyd preamp system .
Will you do history videos of the history of orange marshall gretch ect... I really enjoy your short history video's
Gretsch is coming up. The amp ones haven't done as well as I'd hoped but we'll see how it goes.

My first video! It’s pretty rough but that little amp is amazing!
I was about to order a Wonderdog from Jim at lil dawg amp(already have 5e3 tweed from Jim and it's amazing amp) but after seeing this, not sure which route I should go with..
I looked up the Wonderdog and it looks a lot like Dan’s Deluxe, also reviewed here early on in the channel. Looks great.
