I once went yellow fin fishing out of New Jersey. I was not prepared for the brute power this fish had. With 10 seconds I knew I had not chance of catching of catching this fish. Fortunately the line snapped at 15 seconds. Thank god, it was ripping off my arms.
Good video, way to many people growding in one spot. You said 40+ on that head boat? We only allowed max 26 for tuna, same size boat. Over here on the north east coast, you dont walk on the boat with any line rated under 65 lbs, 80lbs is the norm, rods rated 65- 100 lbs+. Because our normal size tuna are the 60-100+ lbs sizes. Only here we are allowed 1 bluefin tuna of a large size per boat, 3 yellowfin tuna per person.
Use a drag scale. Even some deckhands tend to set too loose imo. Set it with a scale and know you can pull as hard as you want which saves time, energy, and ultimately fish.
Thats great to hear. Im set to go out oct 21. I'm worried it might be too late in the season. Maybe schedule sooner. Not sure. Got skunked in August. Maybe was too soon.
7 foot rated 20-40lbs. I generally use 30-40lb test for rockfish. Fill the reel mostly with 65lb braid and top with a small amount of 30-40lb mono. The braid does not stretch and allows you to feel bites better but I also use circle hooks since they are self-setting.
I wouldn't fish with 25lb test for tuna or even yellowtail. 30lb test line would be the smallest line i would use. Most especially when you have 40 other people fishing on the boat.
No offense but that was a baby Yellow Fin you held up . Would have let it go .You guys were catching alot of fish and it's disappointing to see babies not released.
Yeah It is shameful that they take babies, but give them a break, they are newbies to the tuna fishery and have to start small and pay their dues for the big fish.
I have that reel, nice reel but I use mine mostly for large deep water flounder, wreck and striper fishing. Never for tuna though, it doesn't have the power/drag, 2 speed for our tunas
Nice boat load of yellowfin
I like the way the captain is so thorough. I've heard good things about the San Diego boat.
I highly recommend fishing with them
Yeah new captain matt he is salty as fu@#$
Brandon teaching J1. J1 is notorious for using light drag on the reel.
I set my drags to 30% of line test

I’ve fished tuna in December and it was pretty good
Last season was off the hook! I had tuna for Thanksgiving.

I work on the boats and it’s been pretty decent lately
Nice trip
Thanks! Yellowtail are biting now.
Branden's Outdoor Channel . Great, which boat or landing is your favorite?
What size rod you got with your Lexa bro?
I'm curious what hook did he change it to when you showed him
I forget but we use ringed #2 j hooks
What rod would you suggest for rock fishing deep waters?

Depends on how picky the fish are. Start with the heaviest line possible then drop down if needed. 30lb is a good starting point for yellowfin.
Good old days with captain Ryan ,now we have salty captain matt
What gopro mount do you use? And are you shooting in linear, wide, or superview?
Love your channel man!
Usually hero 8 linear mode
You plan on doing any trips soon?
Not sure yet. Havent had time

They let you take to cooler on the boat
A small lunchbox is fine
What kind a reel are you using
I have several but this trip I mostly used the Daiwa Lexa 400 HD.

@dojo1249 it has up to 25 lbs of drag
How much was that trip?
I forget $150?
People must get annoyed by you telling them what to do all the time. You're not a deckhand bro.
If you stop the footballs they will come right in fast not ten minutes on small fish
That was today last year lol
Last year was a good season.
