Love the two leader idea, it stops risk of damaging the stem removing one. Yes you guessed I have limited experience and trying to learn enough to be more successful in my small garden. Your information is invaluable so once you again thank you to you both. Just wish id started earlier in life when we had a nice flat large garden but too busy working and raising three boys.
I LOVE that he went into detail about what he grows beside the tomatoes in the shade of the tomatoes, and that he added a row of cucumbers to shade the tomatoes to prevent sun-scald! It would be helpful if your titles contained wording that said: companion planting in the shade of tomatoes, prevent tomato sun scald with cucumbers. Then we can search your videos, which searches your titles, and find this video that explains how to do these things. Use the descriptive titles to give specific details about what all your videos contain, it might help to bring more viewers.
@@sn232 that was such a narrow strip & there is going to be soooo much to harvest in it!! All functional plants too. Lettuce in the shade, basil to prevent hornworms on the tomatoes, cucumbers to shade…and all on a drip system saving time & money. Just wish I knew carpentry & I’d build a replica!

I’m glad to hear you mentioning the “Y” branching out because unless you’re observant and thinking clearly, you might think they are to be cut away. You are the first channel that I have heard mention this. This is only my 5th year gardening veggies and I love learning more info and tips. I was pruning and removing suckers yesterday but, I realized that should not cut the “Y” simply to create single stemmed tomatoes. I could see it is ready to bring forth fruit. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Oh, please do the 3D model. I love this trellis! I’ve been using the sting method for years and have been trying to work with my husband on revamping our single run into a double. Thank you so much. This is perfection.
Nicely designed, neat and clean veggie garden. Very inspiring. There is nothing costly used which are more of nusience in the garden than actual use. Whatever used is a "Must Have" kind and mainly can be available within the garden itself. Thanks for making videos. Hope to see some videos on manures that are used.
Great method to doing a dual main stem method. I did the same last year but just used 1 rope and tied the other main stem to the same rope…not as much airflow but I gave it as much as I could and it worked great. Also on my Cherry tomatoes i did the double leader but I also let more leaders grow but topped them almost making extra little branches on the tomato that grew more fruit.
Love your videos! Used your trellis system this year, Southern South Carolina, 15% shade cloth wasn't quite enough protection so i will get some 30% or double up my 15%. I even used your tomato growing soil recipe and mixed up about 3 cubic yards of that mix for my tomato bed. 2 drip lines struggled to deliver correct water to the bed so i will go to 4 lines for my next cycle. Would love to see a video from y'all about garden disease issues and pest control methods you may employ. Cheers.
Very helpful. My trellises are not as robust and blew over in a wind storm last year with all the weight of the tomato vines on them. Fortunately the deer fence around the garden caught them and they survived. They have been fortified, but I may go to a system like yours in future years.
I just found this video, the first I've seen of your channel. Thank you so much for sharing so much detailed information on growing tomatoes! As a relatively new gardener, there's so much info out there that is hype. I'm so grateful for the solid information you've shared. I would like to know how to tell a new secondary branch from a sucker. Thanks again!
I can't believe the size of that tomato plant out of that little container, holy cow! I've watched numerous videos, I'm new at this, and I see a number of crossover disciplines with the trellising, but I have to say, that's...wow. LOL, I'm happy that my plants are growing, but that's very impressive. Thanks guys!
Never! Nature doesn't and neither do I, if you think about how nature works it's amazing, the plant grows up pulling up the exact nutrients tha it needs and then dies and deposits them back in the ground for the next cycle, you can either use spent plants as mulch or compost them and then put the compost back on the soil, God knew the perfect way for plants to provide food for His creature! Blessings to you!
I like the wood trellis system but have got a question. How are you going about rotating crops for getting a successful harvest of tomatoes every year with the wood system?
I do not practice crop rotation, nature doesn't so neither do I , it's actually better if you don't that is if you put the spent plants back on the soil as mulch or compost them and then put the compost back on the tomato bed,the plant as it has grown has taken up all the necessary nutrients to grow a nice crop so by putting the plant back into the same soil that it came from means that you don't need to amend with as much amendments to replenish what was taken out by the crop.
No. Nature doesn't rotate crops nor do we in most cases. The soil biology gets "optimized" for the type of plant grown in a certain area and rotation just makes the biology have to "start over." No Till, No Dig.
I'm glad that works for you, it wouldn't work for me unfortunately as we have way to much wind, the plants would be thrashed inside the crate! I don't have to worry about hardening them off as they have been in the high tunnel so that makes it easier. Keep gardening and have a blessed day!
Thank you so so much for sharing your knowledge! Your videos are so valuable to all of us. I could listen all day, but I have to get out to my garden!😊
What about indeterminate tomatoes such as San marzano. You would likely want to keep some suckers for more production ? How might you design a trellis to accommodate the extra branches ? Thank you Paul
I like this two leader system . I have 2 questions. Do you use this method with both determinate and indeterminate tomatoes? Do you rotate your tomatoes from year to year? Thank you so much for this detailed information.
Good question, I typically don't grow any determinate tomatoes as they don't have the flavor that I. Looking for and are also harder to deal with their plant habit. Nature doesn't rotate crops and neither do I, once you consider how nature does it it makes perfect sense, the plant grows up and dies and puts all the nutrients back into basically the same spot and the cycle repeats itself, so you can either use the spent plant material as mulch or compost it and put it back on the bed. Have a blessed day!
Would love to see a follow up on what everything looks like later on your trellis. Particularly the two leader part with the larger plants. Thanks for sharing. Learned a lot already.
Yes, we trellis the jumbo tomatoes using pretty much the same string and clip method. We also use nets to hold the tomato in because it gets so heavy and would tear itself off the vine or break the plant. Happy gardening!
I've just found your channel tonight. Very good, especially like your editing e.g fast forwarding when best to. I have lots of questions, shall browse you other videos before asking repeated questions. Cheers

So many expert growers, on youtube! What did we do before the clips? As a tomato plant grows the new growth is soft and can be gently wound around the string as it grows. I do not recommend clips in windy areas they cause damage to the stems which causes disease entry points. I love the clips but in windy areas they are not ideal.

I was wondering what your raised beds are sitting on as is it dirt or cardboard or? Also how do you keep your weeds under control? And how high are your ground beds where your tomatoes are? Thanks for all you do, Peter
Hi Peter! Raised beds are on dirt. They are only 6-8" high or so. The only reason is to easily separate the nice soil from the walkway bark in that location. Other garden beds are not raised. Weeds are kept under control by; 1. Applying bark or mulch to pathway 2. Using drip irrigation for precise watering(avoids watering everywhere which makes weeds grow everywhere) 3. Using No-Till gardening method. This prevents dormant weed seeds in the soil from being activated and germinating by tilling. Tilling brings dormant weed seeds to the surface where water, heat and ideal conditions germinate the seeds and they begin growing.
@@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork Just so I understand correctly...are the 6-8" beds on top of dirt or on top of bark. This is probably a silly question but I just want to make sure. The only raised bed is where I have the tomato trellis set up and that is on top of soil. The rest of the garden beds are just slightly raised as I scooped the soil from the pathways and put it on top of the beds then I filled the pathways with sawmill chips/sawdust just to keep it from being muddy.
