Love this topic Kat, no question as to where I sit on this topic especially if it’s about $$
For me any bag we put money into that doesn’t provide us with the luxury experience (buying, wearing, styling) has the same risk, fun or not so fun. Buying a safe bag because you could sell for less of a loss makes the same sense to me as not buying a bag that makes you smile that you’ll wear again and again, or maybe just for a special occasion.

These items are not financial investments, they get used & depreciated in values. You should be glad that you got some money back.
I think people's buying behavior would change if there isn't a resell market.
I think the bags you sold are more fun and charming and fit your personality. Everyone now is just starting to look the same. Buying things just for the aesthetics and not style .

Agree, everyone has the classic bags (think birkin in gold and classic chanel flap in black). It's become quite generic... which is unfortunate given the cost of these bags!

As someone a bit older, not on the H train but who keeps a very strict luxury budget, I buy classic colours and shapes from LV, Celine, Gucci, Loewe etc., and a contemporary or dupe (not fake) of something fun that may only last a few years. I like luxury bags but at a more reasonable price point because they fit my working from home, suburban life. The Hermès K25 and a small Chanel 2.55 used to be on my ‘wish list’ but now they’re not worth it to me at today’s price. I would rather put that money into travel, mortgage or retirement fund because those will make a difference to my life in a way a bag won’t.

I don’t buy designer fun bags or clothes. I avoid trends at all cost. It’s too pricey to risk it and end up with a piece that will look very outdated in not even 1 yr. The trends are going so fast now, it’s crazy. If I want fun, I will go for something affordable. I love colors though but I always been like that. I really buy what I know will work for me for the years to come. I’ll turn 50 soon lol, so I think it’s easier to not get into all the trends out there. I have 36 designer bags and I would say that 90% of them are really timeless styles. I think I did good because I’m at the point where I don’t even want to add more ( yes even Hermès bags😂) and I don’t think to sell any neither. Life is calmer, let’s say and what I really love is just going to nice dinners with my husband. The rest of the time, I’m super casual. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Love this topic. Luckily, I was able to retire so I have minimalized my collection and am sooo happy with what I have. Kept only Chanel and LV handbags and am so content. My fun purchases are LV animation if I love the design. 😎🌺💕

Lol I can relate (love staying home)! We are bombarded with so much temptation, I try and give myself some boundaries so I don't go crazy and then regret buying a bag later. For me I try to buy bags I can imagine myself wearing the next day and steer away from delicate and special occasion bags because they tend to gather the most dust!

It never a problem for me because my taste is so weird that I only like unpopular bags so it’s never trendy so it’s fine to always own them. I also buy them knowing I will lose money if I sell them

    • @lolipena8051

I’m in the same boat. I tend to like non popular bags or if it’s trendy I like it way after the trend. So by the time I’m ready to buy, they are at reasonable prices in the preloved market.

Very interesting and topical video. Up until recently, I shopped and bought mostly limited edition/runway pieces assuming I’d never part with them. However as time passes our tastes and styles evolve and those once popular, hard to find pieces are worth a fraction of their initial cost. It’s definitely a learning experience. With all the chatter of quiet luxury last year being shoved in our faces, my initial thought was to run in the opposite direction. However, in hindsight, being quietly refined feels and looks so much more luxurious than loud and obnoxious- IMO. I still find it fun to bring out my loud logo heavy pieces for the gram but have been veering more toward quiet luxury lately.

I used to buy those runway bags but they went out of style so quickly. So now what I do is spend the money on luxury classic bags but I will buy some trendier contemporary brands ((~$300-600 USD) when I want something more fun. That way I don’t feel so bad. I don’t have a luxurious lifestyle either-I am a mom-so I don’t end up using the expensive bags that often.

For me it is harder to go for these bags. Because I fall out of love soon and lose money when I decide to recover some funds from them.

Interesting topic. It's not hard for me to buy fun bags because I don't base my handbag purchases on trends and what other people aka "influencers" have or like. I buy what I enjoy and LOVE. Also, It's strange to hear someone say "Hermes journey". That sounds crazy to me. What has this world come to?

I love color especially in bags. I’m not into neutral colors. I think that’s what goes with my personality.
What about buying fun contemporary bags? Or limited edition bags? Like one or two a year?
My mom always says if you’re not using something it’s best to let it go to someone that will get use from it. I’ve sold many bags bc they weren’t being used and eventually go out of style.

OMG, all of this resonates so hard. I work for myself at home and I’m also a puppy mom so the only time I leave my house is to take her out for a walk to be honest. I might use a handbag once every other week.

Luxury bags prices are just getting higher and higher these days, and as I’m a regular working adult who can only splurge on these purchases once or twice (at most) a year, it’s not so much the fun/non-fun bags that limits me but the price points. If the price is beyond my personal threshold, I’d most likely go for the pre-loved market but if not, I would go for the boutique purchase as I do feel it is part of the whole luxury bag experience.

Whoever passed that ‘safe and boring’ comment, i do agree on luxury vids tis days (.. hermes hermes chanel hermes.. ) and glad you took it positively! Yet i can appreciate your selection for money’s worth, really what else but H, which i feel does steal the fun of the bigger ‘luxe’ world out there but remains steadfast in value after years. No right or wrong, but really what drives each’s pursuit of purchases. Thanks for sharing ❤

I can understand your stance for choosing the 10 bags. For me, I make it a point to keep 1 fun bag for every 5 bags. It could come in a small size, or my favourite colour as long as it will work with my clothes.

Age and lifestyle definitely have a lot to do with it but even me sticking with LV, Chanel and Hermes, I still sell a lot bc fashion changes and so do we. The more I sell the more I tell myself I need to be smarter. I also comfort myself viewing losses as "rental" fees but some bags I hardly used before selling. Now what I own need to stand the test of time more bc selling and losing money just isn't fun.

  • @jazzed2002

I have limited funds too. And I have a mix of classic bags and fun bags. I recently bought a hot pink Chanel bag - it makes me happy and that's what shopping is about really - whatever makes you happy. I think much much less about resale value, but I get why some folks would consider that.
