Can I Do Pooja During Menstruation? Can I Meditate or Visit Temple During Periods?

  • Can I do puja during menstruation? Can I meditate while having my periods? Can I visit the temple during my periods? Almost all Hindu women unfortunately face these dilemmas and spend their lifetimes feeling insecure and unworthy before God merely on account of their periods.
Their insecurity regarding a natural biological process, arises because there is a long-standing prejudiced belief prevalent within Hindu society, according to which menstruating women defile the place of worship and offend God.
But is this belief right? This belief of menstrual impurity along with the various taboos surrounding periods, actually have no sanction from the Hindu scriptures. These are simply wrong beliefs that have gotten attached to Hinduism in the long passage of history. This same truth, as we shall see in this video, was revealed by Maharshi Ramana, to his lady disciple Suri Nagamma.

temples are places where the AKASH ( pancha boothas )energy is high compared to other places . during menstruation the flow is downwards and has to be aligned with EARTH energy for a free and complete elimination .
by visiting a place with high AKASH energy which is an upward movement in tantras we tend to disrupt the natural flow.
hence it is advised not to visit temples and best to be at home rested .
mediation is by different from visiting temples .

This is not correct I am afraid. If your theory is true then why is the menstruating goddess worshiped at Kamakhya? if you make such statements please back them up with Scriptural Proof. many wrong theories such as these which are totally made up circulate in order to justify bad customs. Tantras are biggest proponents of menstruation and of women. Just visit the Kamakhya temple to understand.

pls note that the kamakya temple you mentioned is closed for 3 days in the month of ashada when goddess bleed.
i have not explored this particular temple and as u said will definitely post my comments after that .
most south indian temples i have explored and researched has been consecrated so as to activate a particular chakra and are experiential . ppl who meditate regularly will know it if with an open mind.
i would also like to reiterate the fact that ramana maharishi never asked one to go to temple during menstruation , he only said yes to meditation .
kindly read the book women and sabarimala by sinu jospeh if you want to k ow more about this practice .she has so many testimonials of women flow getting affected on entering temples during menstruation .
our ancestors are much much advanced in terms of spirituality and wisdom and if there be a custom or practice followed by them one should try to find out the reason instead of blindly believing the modern or western notion which was thrusted upon to spoil our spiritual growth and health.

God permanently reside in our heart what ever condition we are in. Devotee cannot let go of god and god cannot let go of devotee. In his case it is even more difficult we sometimes forget him but he never forgets us. He reside in our heart and simply doesn't have other option. Even when this so called personality of ours goes into deep sleep he is always awake in us.
If women can breathe in her periods she can remember god and visit temple if she likes.
It's just that for visiting temple we should not be so dirty that temple premises also get dirty. So she can have a bath and go like other days.
Nobody should with sweat on their body or suppose coming out of bin straight go to temple premises just like we can't visit other people home and also in our home we should go to restroom first and have a bath in these situations.
If girls can hug their mothers during periods then no problem in hugging god as she is Mother of our souls. But yes if we are filthy in a way that we are sweating or coming straight from the bin even our mother will tell us to have a bath first. So we must not visit temple at least in that situation. Here also god doesn't have a option as he has to be there in our heart all the time. But yeh he reside there like a lotus in midst of muddy water.

I think practices as such were created to not overburden women with tasks like doing pooja, cooking etc during their menstruation. Over the years, they became rules. I think the time of periods is very much important for spiritual development, for women to look inwards. And moreover they shouldn't tire themselves by travelling or other tasks. But if they feel fine, there's no harm in visiting modern temples. I'm sure it would not offend God. I've read that the ancient built temples were created in such a way that it encouraged the upward movement of energy, which was not deemed suitable for menstruating women.

    • @Spiritualbee

The thing to understand is that bodily impurities are ALWAYS present. Even if your body is clean from outside, we are still carrying bags of urine and feces inside. We are NEVER in a perfectly clean state to go to a temple. Many people are constipated, so does it mean they should not go to a temple? If we were to apply PERFECT cleanliness rule - no one will ever be able to enter a temple. The outside temple that we visit is only a tool to build a real temple for God in our heart. Godliness should be reflected in our actions. A temple is a place to ascend body consciousness and try to connect with God consciousness. It is NOT a court where God is judging who is clean or unclean. God is not getting offended. He is above such petty and foolish things. If he got offended with uncleanliness then God would not have eaten the fruits bitten by Shabari. He ate the "impure fruits" because he cared ONLY for the purity of heart which shabari possessed. The disciple of cleanliness is only to discipline mind of devotee. and such things therefore should be viewed in the right and proper perspective and NOT taken to an extreme. If people get caught up in these foolish lower things their mind can never ascend higher to the realm of God.

For meditation you don't need physically go anywhere whereas if you want to go to a temple you will have to go physically. And yes we all have blood running in our veins, but we are not injuncted since the only restriction is to bleeding in the cycle. @@advaitsharma7269 Your assertions indicate that you have most likely never meditated and have absolutely no knowledge about it. One does not need to go anywhere to meet God. "Sarvam khalvidam brahma", "Siya Ram May Sab jag jani" - God is present everywhere. So you can connect with him at home itself. And one does not leave the body while meditating. One is breathing, one's heart is still beating and one's brain and mind are concentrating on God during meditation. You seem to think that while meditating we leave the body and only the mind is being utilized! Not true i am afraid. Manusmriti which talks about "shauch" is a smriti scripture and as any scholar will tell you, its injunctions (unlike those of the Shruti (vedas)) are valid only under CERTAIN circumstances. For example its injunctions regarding shauch were valid in ancient times when sanitary napkins were not invented and women had to do a lot of physical labour. Its injunctions are not applicable in today's times, when modern modes of cleanliness and hygiene are available. And no where does Manusmriti say that periods make a woman impure and she pollutes the temples. NO shastra says such things...which is what people have DISTORTED the shauch injunctions to mean.

From your interpretation it is clear that you have not read enough of shastras let alone srutis and know any thing about the other shastras prevailing in realm. I also have impression that the only text you have made an ATTEMT to read is the Manusmruti. As far as your contention goes that injunctions are no more necessary in the light to sanitary napkin being available, this is another fallacy since even in that time they were conscious about hygiene more than people are today. The injunctions of the shastras are independent of she bleeding or not so your logic of hygiene does not prove good.

In a temple most are simply standing before the idol and praying for their own and their family's well being. Nothing more is happening for the vast majority. The spiritual principle which holds for meditation, also holds for all pujas, temple viists etc.

On the other hand it damages women's relationship with God because most women feel that they are somehow less than men and that their is something wrong with their body and gender. Why should women feel insecure and unrespected and unloved by God in this way? Is it right? Following these customs in modern times does great harm and no positive benefit comes from it. What will a woman who feels low about herself, teach her daughters? Can she make them strong and courageous? Can such daughters stand shoulder to shoulder with men and contribute to society? And if women dont feel good about themselves can Hindu society and India prosper and ascend to become Jagat Guru? Other people will say - you people discriminate against your own women, they feel they are less than men, then why should I respect Hindu philosophy? We will SLOWLY lose the respect of the world if we insist on following purposeless customs. And India will never become Jagat Guru. Which is what we want it to become. Equality must be brought back to society. Vedas call women as Devi (Divine beings) but does Hindu society actually treat them as such? Its not possible to say YES when such customs exist.

2: ... He who remembers Pundarikaksha (Another name of Sri Vishnu, literally meaning with Lotus-like Eyes), He becomes Pure outwardly as well as inwardly.
We must Follow the scriptures and not our wrong and ignorant social beliefs.

Madam Bee, please understand that Bhagavan allowed Suri Nagamma to meditate and did not say anything with respect to entering a temple. You are trying to read into something which ceases to exit. And as far as Bhagavan is concerned he will not say anything against the shastric injunctions. And what argument are you trying to trade to prove your stand point 😂😂😂

Meditation on God is establishing an even higher direct connection with God than merely visiting a temple. Visiting a temple is to condition mind to become ready for the next step which is meditation and immersion in God. Going to temples is a beginners step. But people today think going to temples is the beginning and end of Hinduism. And what do most do in a temple? pray to God for fulfillment of materialistic desires. This is not real spirituality. That begins where such prayers end.
Also please find the exact quotes from the shastras where they say that: "women are impure and should not enter temples during periods." Shastras make NO such claims.

@@Spiritualbee Sanatana Dharma caters to all individuals on whichever stage of their spiritual evolution they are. There is an order and it is tall order. The problem is you want to talk about talk about bramha but your mind is still stuck in wordly affairs. Don't look down on other, what they do, when they go to a temple what they pray for. For all you know they may be on the last stage of spiritual evolution and seeding the god himself. The problem is you claim to be higher level of spiritual evolution but are actually are far far away. Stop being a hypocrite. Concede and stop cheating your own self. I am sorry that I being rude and it may hurt you, but convenient interpretation of words of saints, atmagyanis and shastras is not at all welcomed rather frowned upon.

@@Spiritualbee I don't think any of your point have any substance. On the contrary I question your understanding let alone required for the grasping of Vedanta. And all shastra have injuncted and prohibited be it taitreya samhita or dharma shastra. The funny as well as sad part is you are trying to teach others when you yourself don't seem to be qualified and interpreting and misguiding others. Anyways may god help you.

If a woman goes to the temple in her periods. It won't hurt herself or god but it can hurt other women who are pregnant or have no period time.

Is watching pornography a sin? @thespiritualbee

Whether it is sinful or not is not the point. The question is if it furthers one's spiritual progress to a higher level or keeps one bound to a lower level. That criterion is enough to make a decision in most cases.

Yes it is - for it inserts terrible samskaras in the mind. Have explained it in my essay: www.spiritualbee.com/posts/is-watching-porn-a-sin/
