As far as coaches being public figures, Rassie was just so refreshingly open and humble. He didn't have Hansen's deadpan delivery or Cheika's abrasiveness or Jones' mind games. He came across as an everyday guy who just happens to be really good at coaching. Not an ounce of ego. If you weren't alive in the '90s, you probably wouldn't have even known he was a former star player.
I followed him in the 90s and if you watch the talks, interviews and docies about him, you'll find that he has always been very tactical minded, always watching games over and over, so from a young age he was destined to go into coaching.
@@jldp24 Turned a team that had been written off by the vast majority of experts and commentators into world champions inside of three years, set a blueprint for success that will benefit the Boks for years to come and did all of this while doing more to meet the government's transformation targets than any one of his predecessors. I couldn't agree more. However you missed one vital thing. He won the world cup with the first black south African as Captain. That will inspire many black youths to want to pick up a rugby ball now and finally get more diversity into the grass routes set up.
The deliberately false misrepresentation of what happened with Makazole Mapimpi and Franco Mostert together with the Bomb Squad at the World Cup still infuriates me. It says a lot about the spirit of the squad that they laughed off the furore of overreactive South Africans back home.

Probably one of the most interesting and knowledgeable Coaches I have ever seen in World Rugby - it's Captivating to just listen to the Guy.
Greatest coach in the history of South African rugby, in my opinion. Really hope there are a lot more of these clips coming!
How can he be the greatest?
