The transitions look absolutely insane. Fun fact, they were animated by the crew that did the VFX on the films so yes they know what they're doing and it's why it looks so good.
It looks like an amazing attraction. I may be in the minority, but my only thing is I’m not crazy about such a reliance on screens. Perhaps it looks so good in person that it doesn’t matter. It’s such a different experience that it’s hard to call it Pirates of the Caribbean. It deserves its own name.
I love Pirates of the Caribbean, and I have to say this is the best version of it that I’ve been on. I rode it, got off, and literally went right back on again. So good
Why are the best versions of Disney and Universal rides are in their international parks? The Jurassic World ride in Universal Beijing is also the best version.
Well with Disney Shanghai, it’s their newest global park, so all the rides are going to be fully modern and with the best technology, no retrofitting of older stuff is required like at the rides at their older legacy parks in the U.S. etc
The first commenter here is spot on. Another piece is the desire to preserve the history of the theme park. Yes, there are efforts to update some rides but it has not been without nonsense pushback (e.g., Splash Mountain will become Tiana's Bayou; tiki bird changes).
Honestly, this is the only version that's superior in Shanghai. A lot of it comes from the fact that it was made later, and they could tweak LITTLE things about their classic rides to improve them. That's my reasoning for Shanghai and Paris. Tokyo, the reasoning there is because of the Oriental Land Company
Such a great dark ride, my only critique is how bright the screens are on the battling boat scene but i figure it looks a little more realistic in person. Would love to visit some day

Look, I love the version in orlando and cali, but my god this version is freakin epic. Reminds of the Rise of the Resistance Immersion feel. Disney may be gouging people, but some of their new rides are epic.
This is an incredible ride, but it has about as much in common with the other Pirates rides as Mystic Manor does with the other Haunted Mansions - it's doing something totally different. Shanghai Pirates has essentially taken a tightly-paced modern (post-Indy) dark ride and disguised it as a traditional boat ride, and adapted the movies instead of the existing ride. This may be way more impressive, but I don't think any attraction will ever touch Disneyland's original in terms of sheer atmosphere.
…you wanted them to just rehash a same ride that already exists at 3 parks already? This comment is too nitpicky. I think this looks amazing. It would have been boring to just see a rehash of the original ride which already exists at literally three amusement parks already.
@@fd3 I mean there's plenty of ways they could've kept the original concept of the ride and make new scenes without leaning entirely into the Pirates franchise (not just including references). @daveconsumesmedia I agree. This is a fantastic ride, but it’s completely different than the original Pirates at Disneyland and WDW. Most of this ride is very well done projection mapping, but the fact that the original Pirates rides are still achieving just as immersive experiences with mostly older technology definitely says something about the brilliance of those attractions as well. But even then, the stories and experiences are very different. It’s like trying to compare a wooden coaster to a steel launch. Things to appreciate about both.

And yes I understand the technology now is better, but this literally makes you feel as though you’re under the water and in a new realm. I rode it twice in 2018, it’s so amazing
There are actually two endings to this attraction. One is shown here with the treasure Jack gets being cursed, the other is where it's not cursed and he sings the Pirates theme song from the original version of the ride. From my experince they appear to be done somewhat randomly.
This is the first time ive ever been able to appreciate the scale of this attraction through video. The pacing is nice and there is a lot of slow moments but even the transitional rooms between scenes are massive
If you get to ride this again, please get ULTRA close up with that super nice 4k camera to the Jack appearing from a skeleton peppers ghost effect. That alone is worth the price of admission but I never get to see this very close up.
This is one of the main reasons we are saving up to go to Shanghai next year. Then again, being for Oceania region it is a lot cheaper and easier to get to for us as well :D
LOL! I went there! MANY times! Was there one night in 2021 and the park was nearly empty because there was a case of covid in the community north of the park, so people were paranoid about going to Disney. It was getting late and figured by the time I get to any other ride everything will be closed, so I just rode Pirates over and over again.
Why would they, it's much harder to impress people outside of America which is why they put so much more care into the parks. But don't expect that ever to be in the US, they couldn't care less about us. Take prices for example, it costs a car to go to disney. You think any of that is going to improving the parks instead of lining the pockets of stupid people?

This is obviously awesome; however, I find it nostalgic and just as thrilling to ride the OG rides at Disneyland and Disneyworld. Don't mind seeing new IP using the new technology. But I'm glad Disney is not "updating" rides for the sake of technology.
I agree, although they did update the rides for the sake of IP, Jack Sparrow was never on the original ride (obviously). And as with every real person, they're just one crazy lawsuit away from Disney removing them from the ride all together, luckily that can be done fairly easily with PotC.
You did not lie. Shanghai is THE BEST! Right before this video, I watched the one for Paris and thought, why aren't there any mermaids in any of the parks. Shanghai got the memo! If I'm ever so lucky as to travel to Shanghai, Pirates will be THE FIRST attraction I ride. That was phenomenal!
I went to Shanghai Disneyland on its opening day, and this attraction absolutely blew my mind! People tell me how great Rise of the Resistance is on a regular basis. They have no clue! None at all. I'm not usually one for rides that utilize large screens. But the folks who designed this did their due diligence. Things that are happening on the screens interact with things off the screen very well, and they are synced similarly.
Really cool, what is even more impressive is that ride takes the audience to Puerto Rico.. the COQUI sound (a small frog) you hear in the background is native to Puerto Rico (and only lives and survives there, and apparently Hawaii now too?)..So the Pirates of the Caribbean are in Puerto Rico??
I believe it is a Pepper's ghost illusion where the skeleton is reflected on a piece of glass in front of the Jack animatronic. Once the light is turned on for Jack, the skeleton light is turned off and the glass becomes transparent.
The biggest difference is that, while most other versions have incorporated elements from the movies into the original ride's format, some doing it better than others, this one focuses solely on the films. Though I do wish they would've brought in more characters than just Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones, I am 100% amazed and in love with how immersive it is. Even just watching through my laptop screen, I felt like I was bobbing on the waves with those massive ships. INCREDIBLE! (2/23/2024)
This is very cool -- I would love for there to be "sequel" rides. I wouldn't want the original Pirates ride to be replaced with something like this, but would LOVE if we could have a ride like this NEXT DOOR to the original ride. Give me a separate Pirates Land with several unique Pirates dark rides -- maybe a Pirates coaster. This is obviously an impressive attraction, though a little too much screen work for me (though the screens are incorporated very well). The charm of the OG Pirates is that you are surrounded by such lush sets with so much to see, you can always find new details to appreciate. This ride is more of a big narrative experience.
Honestly, if you stripped Jack Sparrow from the OG Pirates ride, and stripped the references from the beginning, you could literally have these two rides next door to each other as separate rides. I honestly don't see either of them as better than each other, although from a quality perspective, probably the original, so I really CAN'T call this the best POTC ride in the world, but it doesn't mean I don't love it
Some of the transitions between projected backgrounds and practical sets are crazy good.
Yes, the morphing from skeleton to Jack Sparrow was extraordinary. Know how it was done??

I've been in Paris and Los Angeles. Cant really tell which one is better, I think they were very similar actually.
Paris better
Very cool. But I don't think it beats the vibe of the starting room on the original.
amazing
The biggest difference is that, while most other versions have incorporated elements from the movies into the original ride's format, some doing it better than others, this one focuses solely on the films. Though I do wish they would've brought in more characters than just Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones, I am 100% amazed and in love with how immersive it is. Even just watching through my laptop screen, I felt like I was bobbing on the waves with those massive ships. INCREDIBLE! (2/23/2024)
This was way better than the one in California
Are the gun/cannon/explosions scenes especially loud? Like much louder than the POC at Disneyland? 😢
Truly magnificent
I honestly don't see either of them as better than each other, although from a quality perspective, probably the original, so I really CAN'T call this the best POTC ride in the world, but it doesn't mean I don't love it
Holy balls this was good!
Bring this version to usa
6:11 literally the best bit
Same, I love it.
The part with the dog and key with the prisoners trying to get out. Its weird seeing them in skeletal form.
does the japanese version have several flying dutchmans and davy jones being able to turn into a blue orb? crazy world
