  • Waste Management of Alameda County - the powerhouse of the Northern California market area. This was once a mega yard with hundreds of trucks and multiple shifts running through daily. Over the years, the work has dwindled down a bit but the yard is definitely decent sized still.
I try not to post other people's work on here but I stumbled upon a decent amount of archive footage from here and just had to share. Let me know if you guys enjoy this kind of stuff.
    Highlights of the video:
(1:20) - Burgundy WMI MSL on semi-auto green waste
(1:40) - (L): Jumbo OnePass McNeilus Recycler; I'm almost positive these trucks were converted to Wittke/Leach front loaders later on in their life. (R): Valley Waste Management OnePass Kann FEL; as most of you know VWM's OnePass system was unique in that drivers had to dump each cart into the truck which is why this truck has no bucket on it
(1:53) - Another jumbo OnePass McNeilus Recycler
(3:31) - Oakland Scavenger Able Body MSL
(4:11) - Freightliner Condor Amrep Octo MSL
(4:15) - If I remember correctly, these CNG Volvo Wittkes were transfers from either Napa Garbage or Empire WM in Santa Rosa.
(4:18) - An ex-Green Valley Disposal (from San Jose) Freightliner Condor Wittke still running in the old white and green color scheme. When Green Valley shut down, a lot of the trucks, mostly Condors, were sent to yards across NorCal. A lot of the Freightliner Condors that were running in recent years came from San Jose so its neat to see one documented in the white before being repainted
(4:29) - OnePass Kann with WMAC's iconic "WM" grille replacement
(6:49) - Another VWM OnePass Kann dumping out
(6:59) - SalvageSale throwback photos; notice the ex-USA Waste Amrep Octo FEL and POD transporter
(7:58) - WMS Heil POD sitting in the Oakland yard, and the bodies/trailer can be seen at (8:03)
(8:06) - Oakland Scavenger Newspapers Find

I worked for Oakland Scavenger/WMX-WM for 30 years and can answer any questions you have about them. I saw a few bonus trucks from USA Waste in the yard which purchased WMX in 1999 and changed the name to WM, thankfully they did not keep the USA puke green colors. Thank You for the great memories.

Wow! Thanks for the walk down memory lane Aaron! Now that’s the wmac I remember from the early 2000’s. I drove the Kann one pass trucks, the msl’s like the wittke’s, mcneilus’, and the condor amreps. I really loved those. They were still in the repainting phases back then from burgundy to green. The burgundy toters were used throughout Oakland, and were still there when I was there. I don’t remember seeing the wmac GreenWaste toters though. I know that wasn’t oro loma, but could have been a pilot program for the green waste carts prior to rolling out the rehrigs. I saw the split labrie mini max that VWM had, and the rapid rails were from VWM too. WMAC even had Pete 310 and WXLL amrep Octos they used for recycle in oro loma too back then. And prior to the split wittke front loaders in oro loma, they had mcneilus century 2 recyclers for the trash and organics. Now days, it’s all acx mcneilus msl’s, currottos, and asl’s that service residential in alameda county. What an awesome piece of history! Thanks for sharing bud! Love it!

hearing about the history really is entertaining. btw, I believe the wmac toters were indeed a "pilot program" for castro valley. Some small filmer in castro valley stumbled upon one that said " Castro valley yard waste collection program." Turns out all of them say that on the lid. I hope someone can get one cause they are quite unique

for the msl, i don't believe it was OLSD because there would be oro loma toters and i believe the nestable toters are newer than what oro loma bought. could be wrong though
might be castro valley, since they had tons of them wmac toters

@@WMAC_Master it’s not fremont, they ran under a different logo on their recycle tubs and never had carts. They also had their own yard in Fremont if I remember correctly. You’ve found a number of these logo’s nestable evr1s before so I’m guessing it’s probably that region, either that or OLSD rolled out nestables in certain areas

The CNG Volvo Wittkes I believe came from Napa Garbage since many of their Volvos looked like this. I doubt Empire actually ran a CNG operation as well. Do you have any old pictures of the Green Valley Disposal and Napa Garbage fleet and operations. I am curious to see what trucks and carts they had.

    • @WMmaster626
