COMMON QUESTIONS:
Why are you so orange? I do not fake tan, it's the filters on my camera and they can sometimes turn me warmer than I am depending on the light, although I am quite tan naturally in person (I'm Italian)
Do you bleach your own hair? HECK NO, my hair dresser does it all 😅
How old are you (were you born in '83)? I was born august 3rd 1994 (currently 24), the "83" in alexasunshine83 is for 08/03-83! Basically alexasunshine was taken 😬
Where are your vines from? Amazon 👉🏻 * go.magik.ly/ml...

Why do you thrift? To stop my consumption of fast fashion due to the horrible treatment of workers and the negative environmental impact of waste fast fashion produces. I recommend the documentary The True Cost 👍🏻

The theme of this video is "winging it", much like all my other thrift flips 😅 hopefully my inadequate sewing abilities bring you some entertainment 🧵✂️
Alexa Sunshine83
Hey Alexa!!! :)) where did you get the white coffee sign in the background?? it’s so cute
You did good.
Alexa Sunshine83 my kitty passed away today. i was happy to see your video pop up to bring me some distractions so yeah, inadequate sewing skills or not, i’m grateful for your video. thanks for posting
Hii
Olá! Alexa Sunshine83 gostei do teu tutorial👍🧵
It’s always interesting to me to watch people who don’t really know garment construction sew garments. I’ve been sewing for 20 years and it’s refreshing to see how someone who doesn’t really sew put things together. They always come up with stuff I wouldn’t think of.
Idk a lot about professional sewing but I do have a lot of cranky ideas in mind to alter my clothes and I'm glad that I have a trusty tailor who's my mom's friend and amazing in bringing my ideas to life. I wish I can improve my sewing skills esp with the help of a machine cause ive just been trashily sewing by hand for the past 10 years
same here.
For the first one: why don't you try to make it like a corset kinda thing? So instead of putting a new zipper, you close it by lacing it + you get the cms you need to actually fit you.
And if one side would look odd, try separating the back and the front completely and adding another corset kinda thing on the other side
Great idea!
This is exactly what i did to a lace dress which was too small! I bought the dress online and they listed it as a one size fits all but when I got it, it's a xxs. It actually fits me perfectly everywhere but I can't wear a bra cause the chest is like my literal chest size. So I cut the back, snipped off a strip of lace which was a belt and sewed the lace I cut off the dress onto each side of the triangle to be made into a loophole to attach the lace. However, unfortunately, my sewing skills are too horrendous and the lace end up fraying cause I don't have a machine to hem it properly. It looks amazing from afar but the details baffle me so I just brought it to a tailor and now it's being redone in a professional way haha
Update on the dress: I finally have it properly tailored 2 weeks ago but the dress shrunk after washing it so I can't even button it anymore 🙃 (it's a button down dress). Found a really pretty floral dress from my childhood so I discussed with the tailor and they recommended me to add side panels so I'll make another update once it's done 👌
Yes my thoughts exactly
or put one on the back
I love that you show the fails in your thrift flips because that is the reality of trying to alter clothing! thank you
The yellow dress you would have to put the right side of the fabrics together then make the stitch length long without reversing, pull the thread and it would gather the fabric for you. Then you would put the elastic on it. :)
Also you'd have to put dart(s) in the top half to not have the excess fabric or take it in on the sides
@@jelica_hope Yeah, a couple of darts would make that top fit so much better.
I guess, the top being loose looks kinda good and works. But she should have just sewn the top and bottom right sides together with an inch of seam allowance, then sewn the seam allowance down into a casing and attached the elastic so it would not bulge or look weird...
A "sewing hack" that I only recently learned is ironing! For example if you iron a hem at the right length before you sew it will turn out super straight!
When you need to sew 2 pieces together you need to put them right sides facing each other and then sew the seam. You won’t have that weird, raw edge of fabric sticking out. The seam edges will be on the inside of the piece. Also if you iron your hems before seeing them they will turn out perfect! Check out a bunch of sewing videos on You Tube!
Yes, and you have to lay down the yellow fabric flat (not in ruffles) and stretch the elastic (but not the fabric) more while sewing. Maybe fix the elastic on 4 parts. Then it would create the ruffles more evenly around the whole dress.
Honestly, that crop is still adorable 💛 I’m obsessed with the “wearing a bustier as a top” trend 😍🌻
With the corset style top you could take out the zip, sew up the side then cut down the back, hem it and add some eyelets and lace it up. Makes it more adjustable X
The blue cardigan you have on is gorgeous! Don’t ever get rid of it.
Omg thank you! Can you believe i got it at the goodwill outlet for like a dollar??!
Ok, so I have an actual bachelor's degree in fashion design, but I can NEVER make myself to fix all the clothing I've been hoarding (kinda like chefs never cook at home, I guess?) 😭 This may be the best chance I'll get to do it! #stayathome
What you could add to the yellow dress you could add balloon sleeves with more elastic
Edit: I feel like a have the tomato pin holder too
The last one turned out so great! I think the yellow dress looks super cute with a belt💛Don’t feel bad about things not turning out perfect. I bought some black yoga pants from the thrift store for $1 and wanted to sew the ankles with elastic to make it like joggers. I messed up a lot, had to seam rip it several times, and it took me four days to finally finish, but it turned out great in the end and now they are my most worn lounge pant😊
For the yellow dress pin right sides together to hid the raw hem. Looks very cute with the belt though :)
this is very chaotic
*I LOVE IT*
The black dress gives me “The Craft” vibes. So cute
3.32 i feel like its the first time i've heard Alexa not talk in an over the top happy peppy voice. its quite nice to hear someone's their non youtube voice x
😅 i definitely have a faster higher pitched voice when I’m filming sometimes, but it’s still me, I talk quite high pitched naturally
Alexa Sunshine83 absolutely! Fantastic video too - I definitely learnt a few new things. I’ve never had the confidence sowing myself
You need to get a self healing cutting mat, rotary blade, and one of those big rulers. It will be an investment but it will be so worth it when it comes to cutting straight lines!!
👌👌👌
when she posts at 7 am and you still haven’t gone to bed😳
The yellow dress looks so good with the brown belt!! And we learn by making mistakes. Everyone makes those mistakes when they start doing something new. And that dark dress at the end looks fabulous on you! 💖💖
Watching in 2023, it's a little baby Alexa 🥺💜 so fun revisiting and realizing how much your style has changed
When you get a new zipper for the corset top get one for a jacket. Ask for help at the sewing store. You want one that opens and closes rather than a basic zipper.. The yellow dress is cute with the belt. Love the black dress!
I love the way that yellow dress turned out!
The yellow ruffle tiered dress gave you cowgirl vibes, so why not rock that with some cowboy boots? I don’t remember ever seeing you with cowboy boots. If you don’t have any, you should get you some on Poshmark or wherever! They’re very fun to wear 💕
And that yellow dress flip was beautiful! Yellow looks so great on you! 💕
the black dress is adorable! love it
Hi! You are sensational! You have very skilfully redesigned the clothes in a short time. Congratulations! Thanks for showing me in a video.
That yellow dress looks very intentional! In the first clip of it in the intro looks amaaaazing with the belt ❤️
Like something out of reformation lol
Awww omg thank you !!!
So cute! You did a great job. If you think that the neon pink is too bright try pairing it with a lighter wash jean. The muted color will balance out the pop of the shirt.
That yellow dress turned out so chic! It looks so awesome on you! I think it would also be a cute look with one of your oversized denim jackets.
You did a better job than I would ever have done. The black dress was my favourite.
thank youfor being so real. first time watching a video from you and i love the truth shown about the velcro and it hanging by a thread cos we all mess up stuff when trying to upcycle or flip something. i sometimes felt like im just making mistakes and wasting but good to know others do it as well :) thank you
The first top is so cute! You could stitch up the side and then add ribbons in the back to lace it up like a corset, that will give you a little extra room and fit well with the style of the top!
Suggestion. cut two strips of the original blue dress, add interfacing to the strips. add it to the side of the corset, with elastic on the width of the strips, that way it will expand. if things are big enough venting things with strips often will make it work.
That last dress is gorgeous!
Ever since you pointed out that you can’t say “Spring” with the G it’s all I can hear. You said “Lon” instead of “Long” 😂 that’s adorable!
Also I can’t tell if you did this but sewing tip: when you’re sewing a hem it’s best to turn the item inside out so you can see what you’re sewing!
This helped me so much!! As an amateur in modifying clothing, I’ve been trying to find new ways to spice up my wardrobe and the elastic altering is perfect!! Thank you!
Why are you sooo Beautiful!!! You have the best imagination ever I didn’t think you could turn that yellow dress into like a cute little midi dress🤍💛💟💙💫
Oh my goodness the peplum top and black dress turned out SO good!!!!!
😭😭😭 thank you !!!!
You’re so welcome!!!
i actually think the dress you out the elastic in looks great with the belt, keep!
I love all of them. The black dress is beautiful and more wearable now.
I would totally wear the yellow dress too. It would hide my stomach and the length is cute now.
you should do a 'dressing like disney characters' vid! 😍
selly totally!!!
It is really cool that you go out of your confort zone. Cool video ☺️ Happy boop sunny ☀️
That floral top you have on 😍 Its so pretty 😍
You did a wonderful job on all of these! I still like the yellow dress even if it is a bit long in the top half - you can’t even notice when you wear it with a belt. Super cute! Your sewing skills are definitely improving, so you should be proud! Can’t wait to see more thrift flips in the future xx
That dress is adorable!! It doesn’t look too country or cowgirl vibe.. it looks springy and pretty!! I think it’s awesome!
You can make straps for the corset top out of the leftover skirt fabric. ALSO use that leftover skirt fabric to add to the back, make it a little looser by adding a strip down the back. be sure you buy a SEPARATING zipper for the back.
You could make a super cute top (tube top or cropped tank) out of the excess fabric from the maxi dress!
#2 would look so cute as just a skirt!
👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
that yellow dress is gorgeous
just a sewing tip, when sewing a seam (referring to yellow dress), lay the pieces right sides (the side you want to see) together. so it would be yellow stripe top facing yellow stripe skirt and you would sew down the edge to hide the raw fraying bits
This is THE content for quarantine 👌🏼🌞
😭🙌🏼
I DESPERATIVELY WANT THAT YELLOW DRESS! it looks amazing with the belt! loove the colour and breezy silhouette
i adore the last dress too!
I have a lot of sewing tips that I would love to share with you. I don’t really know how to explain them but like with the yellow dress, you fold the two pieces inside out and sew the two raw edges together that way so that when it’s right side out, it won’t have that weird edge. Also you can sew darts on jeans to make them fit your waist. You basically just take the small section of the waistband and put the two together in a small fold. Then you go on the inside and sew the fold. When you’re done you can just cut off the excess fabric. I would suggest that you do two kind of over the butt instead of just one so that the jeans can look more balanced. I have a lot of other tips and tricks and I would love to help to out!
Ooooh! Thank you seriously so so much!!!!!! Trust me I need all the help and tips !
I like new hair color better. Looking fresh and natural plus minimal maintenance 🌸💕🌷🌿🌵
Thanks! Yeah I’m so happy I went for this color since I won’t be getting my hair done anytime soon 😅 it hasn’t even been touched since January!
I have a suggestion for the blue halter top. How about cut off the zipper and cut the other side, and sew a wide blue elastic on both sides? This should give you the stretch to fit and you would be able to slide it on over your head. Maybe.
Honestly i know you feel nervous about your thrift flip video because you are not an expert BUT i still love to watch them because you have such interesting ideas! Also i want to start sewing and your videos inspire me to just try it and get better along the way. Using thrifted clothes for this is such a good idea
For the pink shirt, if you sew the elastic overlapping with the stitches in an X shape it won’t be as bunches in the shirt and you can hide it easier, you obviously can’t notice while wearing it, but it makes the processes of closing the hole where you strung it through a little easier :)
You're right, I was angry about the black floral dress, but it turned out so cute, the length was perfect and it looks great with the black Docs. You did a great job, specifically by your own, it's nice to see your improvement 😊😘
I think for the first top you should sew some of the spare fabric either side and then add a zip through the middle x
That little blue top from the dress is such a genius idea, love how you manage to style and upcycle otherwise outdated pieces, given me some inspiration for lockdown! You've gotten me so into thrifting this past year it's mad aha
THAT YELLOW DRESS IS SO PRETTY AAAAAAAA 💛💖🐝🍯🌻
I think it would be fun if you got a PO Box and let your followers send you thrifted goods and fan mail for a video ☺️☺️☺️
Just thinking out loud about the blue top.. You can add a new zipper, but maybe you can uhm.. ( i don't know how to say it in english..... :P) make it some kind of corset so you can pull it to your fitting? In this way you still can put it over your head. I don't know if you understand what i mean.. or if it is hard or easy to make it like this.. just thinking out loud haha
I absolutely LOVE your enthusiasm and Go For In-ness! And if I were your Grandma Id be teaching you how to see these things! Your guesses are good though. The thing about elastic is you need to make it as tight around your body part as you was the item to feel on you. Then you really stretch it hard on the fabric and the fabric bunches on it own. Does that make sense? Keep doing these things and you will learn the tricks...
i'm sure someone's already mentioned this, but for gathering, learn how to make a baste stitch. i think it would help for a lot of your DIYs and it's actually super easy!
Love your creativity! Was about to tell you the yellow dress wasn't a dress but a house coat. I see someone else already has. Still you made it look a lot like a cute little dress. It does need to be worn with a belt and maybe a nice light little summery white belt would look even better than the brown one. Because dusters (another word for house coats) are thin, you'll always need to wear rather substantive undies, like a tank top and biker shorts. Love your ingenuity!
Low key love her cat Christmas sweater
To make a straight line, I do exactly what you did and measure. I usually measure up from the bottom seam and mark how ever many inches I'm going to take off. I go all around and mark and then I connect all the marks together. Voila, a straight line! Hasn't failed me yet. You did great!
This is pretty impressive for someone with not much sewing experience! Good job!
I love that yellow dress you did an awesome job on it
Thank you so so much!
That yellow dress is too damn good. ♥️♥️♥️
The last dress totally gives me ASOS vibes!! I love it 😍😍😍
Thrift flips are my favorite!
Alexa you done such a fantastic job on all of them. Please make the sleeves on the yellow dress puffy omg it would look so cute xxx
Your presence is so fricken happy I love your videos. ❤️
awwww! I appreciate you !!
The yellow dress looks so cute! I love it!
Dude, I know everyone has different taste, but I am SO in love with the yellow dress flip, and I can't even believe your not totally, completely in love with it :,0 It's SOOOOOO cute
😭😭😭 thank you Emmy !!!!
For the yellow dress, one tip is to do a basting stitch and then pull on the thread to gather the excess fabric on the bottom to the correct size of the top and then sew it together. Then add the elastic.
I recently started flipping items and learning to sew so girl we are in this together 💛 it looks so much easier than it actually is but you did great and definitely gave me more inspo 🌻
If you added puff sleeves to the hot pink shirt it would be even cuter!!
This is the first videos of yours I have seen and I have to tell you that I love your creativity! I've been a seamstress for nearly thirty years and I'm loving all the thrift flip videos! You did good!
Aw omg! Thank you so much love ☺️ still a very fresh beginner but trying!
Alexa is the person that keep me happy in my quarantine 🥺🥰🌞✨
i love that black dress! it looks way better short!
The yellow dress would look better if you made some puff sleeves with it 😊🌼
For any zipper that you cut for a flip or need to shorten, once you cut it, keep the zipper closed and sew the two zipper sides together close to where you cut it. That creates a new stopper so the zipper won't come off to never be put back on again :) (I wish I had an image function to show you, but UA-cam)
For elastic, take elastic and wrap it around your waist (or anywhere else that it needs to be), and then stretch it until it's at a comfortable stretch that fits whatever you need it to snugly. Then pin it or mark where it meets each other while stretched and cut it. You'll get the perfect sized elastic, which this method is especially good for elastic waistbands. Then to sew your cut elastic to the garment, pin one end of the elastic to the beginning of where you'll start sewing the elastic on and pin the other end to the end of where you'll stop sewing, no matter how short it is. You'll stretch the elastic to match the length of fabric it's pinned to evenly while you're sewing. Because you're stretching it while you sew, once you're done, it should create a natural ruffle where the elastic was sewn to the fabric.
Alexa, you are really getting better at sewing.
😭😭😭 you’ve made my day!!
This is really cool, very creative! The pink peplum top is so pretty! Thanks for sharing
the yellow dress does look better with the belt, so cute for spring though!
The yellow dress would be so cute with nothing underneath for a photoshoot in some tall grass, maybe with a hat
for the corset top: when you cut a zipper, you need to create new zipper stoppers if you want to keep the zipper functioning. just sew at the bottom of the zipper so it doesn't come off. but since you are in the dilemma of the zip coming completely off, you could sew that side up, add some fabric from the skirt to the middle back and do a shirring technique on the middle back. it's not ruined, you just have to make some modifications.
for the yellow dress: another general sewing tip is "right sides together" that means when sewing two pieces of fabric together, you generally place the pretty sides of the fabric facing each other to hide the raw edges. you did a great job with the elastic.
for the pink peplum top and black floral dress: you did a great job 👌 perfect execution.
in conclusion: you did a great job with these. everyone has to learn and everyone makes mistakes while learning. Everyone that knows anything about sewing has been where you are now. Keep going, keep experimenting. keep sewing. I would recommend @Coolirpa she has a great sewing channel. 👍 good luck!
Yassss I’ve been waiting for you to do the black dress haha. Also what literally everyone else said about the raw edges. Stick the two patterned sides together. Sew along 1 cm from edge, then iron out flat again. Raw sides are hidden inside the dress. Super cute, you had the vision, love that! Thanks for brightening my day x
on the second dress: farmgirl ... well ... that is my aesthetic so IM HERE FOR IT
it does look fantastic with the belt i will say
alexa omg that yellow dress is so cute!!!!! you’re sewing skills are definitely improving!!!!
Great job, you are learning fast, a tiny hint put your pins in the other way as in top to bottom & you will be able to sew right over them, also put the material with right sides together, sew that first then put the elastic on xx
I love how everything turned out, you did it great. My favorite was the yellow dress ✨💖
The last dress turned out perfectly!
I’ve never tried to cut a zipper that’s already attached to a garment so I’m not sure how tidy it would look but you could try shortening the zipper by sewing a satin stitch around the closed zipper teeth where you want the zipper to end then cutting right below?
I know I commented this on another video....get a rotary cutter, straight rotary cutter ruler and self healing rotary cutting mat. It will make your life easier for cutting straight lines. Invest in yourself on this one, and maybe use a coupon. 😉 It will streamline your thrift flips a lot.
Good job girl!!! The last dress came out so GREAT!
