How I Made Some Billet Aluminum Bearing Carriers for my Next New Project!

  • Опубліковано 23 вер 2024
  • Today we are starting another new project! I'm not going to say what that new project is just yet, first we need to build the CV spool, rear bearing carriers, and front spindles. In this video I couldn't find any bearing carriers that would work for the hubs and CV-axles that I want to use for this next project. I decided to make them out of billet aluminum that I found at the scrap yard.

My uncle is like 67 yo been a tool maker all his adult life and his theory is if you cant see it working in your head then you wont be able to make it ..which obviously you are able to do .. i think you do dang good work for the amountbof actual training you have had ... experience , trial and error are worth a whole lot when it comes to fabrication

8:36 it's not terribly hot because the metal table sucked the heat from your aluminium part. Try to isolate your part (with wood or something else) to keep the heat in the part, not in the table 😉
    Nice job Chris!

  • @fuggnut

Yes, seeing what you want in your head and making it is a thing. Most people don't have that and especially not with machine tools lol.
Some men you can see the things they are capable of by the scrap they keep because even money couldn't get you there without
the brains to do it yourself. Nothing better than letting your head make cool stuff just because you can. I like watching.

You just described how a jig & fixture Machinist makes most jigs & fixtures ! Most of the time We are given a part and told to make a fixture for it or a group of parts + completed weldment and told to make a jig to hold them for welding. I would occasionally make a rough drawing but most of the time I just built around the part / parts.

When heating aluminum up for a friction fit it always always always takes twice as much heat and twice as much time you think its going to. If you have any fire resistant material other than a steel table, ie., fire bricks or even some expanded mesh for less contact with the aluminum you're heating up then it'll go much much easier next time.
That steel table will soak up so much heat. Its surprising that you got the 2nd one to drop before running out of propane.

The only issue I see is that it looks like you put the retainer clip on the outside of the assembly which means all the forces trying to pull the wheel off the buggy are going to be transferred to that thin aluminum housing. It will probably be fine but for heavier vehicles the retainer clip is on the inside so the c.v. shaft itself helps keep the bearing in place even if the nut gets loose for some reason. I think you will be fine though. lol
