What came first the chicken or the egg? the game fucked up as soon as Jordan brand began artificial inflation.
Jordan brand created this monster by limiting production of there sneakers to artificially create scarcity and high demand for there sneakers... It's the same game that drives the value of diamonds, which are not at all a rare stone... De Beers has a global monopoly on diamond mining which allows them to manipulate the market value through the use of artificial inflation.
The resale market of sneakers was essentially spawned on the heels of deadstock OG sneakers and highly limited/exclusive sneakers like the undefeated 4s selling for absurd amounts of money... or at least being listed at such ridiculous prices, that it seeded the thought in millions of minds that sneakers are an investment and if you cop the right pairs you could strike gold.
I mean, you can price anything at any monetary value you want, whether or not it sells is another story... At the end of the day scarcity drives the market value, when something is highly limited and exclusive than its perceived as extra valuable and those with money to burn will purchase said product for the perceived status symbol it provides them.
Basically all i'm saying is between wealthy buyers willing to pay the absurd resale prices and Jordan Brand making extremely limited friends and family sneakers, as well as creating scarcity through there regular production lines... It was only a matter of time before everything spiraled out of control.
We all hate the idea of resellers and it's easy to push blame on the resellers and resale buyers for creating this entire mess, but at the end of the day, its Jordan Brand that has created the system and fed the fire which birthed the sneaker resale market into what it is today.

For me, I rather buy reps than giving free money to resellers. Your money doesn't go to the brand, it goes to bots and resellers. They are at fault for making the sneaker price sky rocketing and killing the sneaker culture. Also Nike is dumb, they can make more money restocking or even make there shoes a pre order release. Forget brand loyalty when Nike doesn’t make the shoes available. I’m only loyal to wallet and hard earned money.

Many rep workers have better quality of life than the employees of multi-billion dollar companies like Nike. If "Authenticy" is so important to you then you should also be holding these companies accountable for the ways in which they exploit their workers. I love sneakers. I buy retail, resell, and reps. This is how it was explained to me..
For every shoe, Nike puts out contracts to different factories that shows the design of the shoe and what they want when it's created. Whichever factory makes the best product based on the specs Nike gave them, they win the contract and they produce the shoe. However, remember there's multiple factories that were handed out those contracts on the specs. They're supposed to "throw them away" and not put the shoe into production, but some factories don't do that. They make almost identical reps and sell them because they have the original design specs. 👌🏾

There’s no way they’re dumb enough to give the drawings and specs for a new shoe to multiple factories and just hope they toss them when they don’t get the contract. This is China where they are master imitators. They just buy the real shoe and source the closest material they can to make the shoes on their own. When it’s a new product, they have to reverse engineer it but with Jordan’s that have been around for years, they already have the plans and if they don’t, they’re for sale somewhere. Nike just isn’t giving them away willingly.

I'm from Brazil, and here in Brazil the pairs sold by nike are of a lower quality than pairs from other places. The resale here is also insane, any model is very expensive, because our currency is devalued. That is, if Nike doesn't care about selling quality pairs, why should people care about buying original pairs? Most of the time the UA pair and the original pair are made in the same country, use the same materials and the same cheap labor, the difference is that the "original" pair is resold for much more expensive, when in fact it cost the same cents to be manufactured, as well as the fake pair ...

Thanks man this video speaks what I've been having issues with the shoe industry. Fakes would not exist if shoes weren't made in limited numbers. I wear all my shoes. I love them as much as you. We share many things. Power rangers Jordan's and any 90s shoe. I wanted the 11s this past December but it ran out and and resellers are screwing over people. Sick of it.

Sup nightwing, this video and the last one about the industry as a whole really resonated with me and the way i look at the "sneaker community". It has changed so much since i've started and even though we're a dying breed i love to see likeminded people still exist and actually care for the shoe, the materials and the backstory and not about the value.
But yeah, on topic, i'd never buy fakes but i do understand Nike's creating a need for them with their crazy release strategy. Man, i miss camping out. And getting J's at retail.

I can’t believe where the sneaker game has gone. I remember spending the summer in Cali with my grandmother (I’m from NY) and she took me to JC Penny and bought me me the entire “Bred 1” set. This was in ‘86, I was 7yrs old. I got the nylon pants, the shorts and the red tee that had the old Jordan logo (basketball with wings). I say all of that to make an important point. My mother bought me the Jordan 2’s when they released. I HAD THEM BEFORE MY GRANDMOTHER GOT ME THE BRED 1s!!!! So back then, you were STILL able to get your hands on a pair of Jays for RETAIL months later!!!!! I wasn’t a big basketball fan yet, so I really didn’t understand why everyone was so impressed with my kicks. I started to watch basketball around the time the 5’s were released. But again, it still amazes me that we’ve gotten to the point that it is damn near impossible to simply buy a sneaker you like. I remember being able to buy a pair, ruining them and possibly buying them AGAIN!!!!! Those days are certainly gone now...smh

Just like how hype shoes increase in price, because it sold out; certain shoes go on sale, because they don't sell at a given price. everything has a price based on what most people are willing to pay. also, understand why louis vuitton can make billions at their price point versus why nike makes billions at its price points. resell is not the problem. counterfeit items are the problem. nike should see how chanel or louis vuitton combats fakes

It won’t. They tried that and it backfired. If shoes are too easy to cop hypebeasts will no longer have hype on the product. The shoes will be left sitting. Look at the Nike release calendar. Sneaker after sneaker after sneaker. And due to the hype the J’s and dunks all sell out instantly. Nike would prefer that than to meet demand on each release.
What I do hope is that they look at the recent yeezy bred rerelease. The production was HUGE, 500K pairs. Global sell out. On the back of last dance they could easily retro OGs with plenty of supply and make bank. Looks unlikely tho

Hi Chris. I agree with you 100%. I am an early 90's kid and like you, I am sentimental and prefer to collect the shoes from my youth that I wore out the first time I owned them. I am a huge baseball and basketball fan so Jeter, Griffey, and Jordan shoes are normally at the top of my list. I have a small collection that I prefer to wear (in the right conditions). In terms of your video, I don't buy fakes, cant afford resale, and typically can't get retail. I typically hunt for the specific shoe I want on eBay hoping to find a deal on the exact pair I'm looking for that has been worn a handful of times or less. In terms of new shoes I mostly buy kicks that I can wear on the basketball court or the baseball field and even those have begun to approach the exact problem you address in this video. Regardless, thanks to you and Jodi for the great videos. I do not subscribe to many channels but this is one of the few. Its nice to see and hear from someone from the same/similar generation as me that isn't solely (pun intended) focused on the new hype (even though it is fun to look at) and appreciates the shoes from their youth. Thanks again!!

Simple economic principle at play called "Willingness to Pay" -- companies and resellers benefit (profit) the most when they can sell us their products/goods as close to this price as possible. This would maximize their bottom line. If they could, they would target each of our individual "willingness to pay" prices for every product and only sell to those who have the highest willingness to pay -- In a way, resellers play this role in the secondary market. But at the end of the day, people who aren't willing to pay can hold off, look for alternatives, or as Chris highlighted, buy replicas for hundreds less. Great video highlighting a valid concern. Thanks Chris.
