I Finally Started the Mentor Roulette Grind

- Mad because small mentor! At long last I'm diving into the mentor roulette grind in Final Fantasy XIV. Let's see how many I can clear before Dawntrail comes and changes the requirements. We might even get a few achievements along the way. :p
twitch: / ciderspider
twitter: / ciderspiderr
lalachievements: lalachievement...
Don't forget to turn on "Join mid-duty" if you don't have it on already, that should help you get the hairy stuff.
I spent like half a day repeatedly back-filling Aurum Vale healers who left, a few weekends ago. It was an interesting day.
mid pull Odin is still my favorite "wait! why??? how!??" they were at like, 12% and in the process of wiping.
alternatively, that one terrible guildhest where you kill all the mobs at once and someone managed to abandon mid-combat so we got a very confused refill.
My favorite by far was E12 though. I joined a group right after everyone left the main platform for the phases on the smaller platforms, so I entered an empty arena and was almost immediately killed.
It's also the only way to get 24man content. You cannot get 24man content fresh as mentor, only in progress.
@@Asako_Gaming is that impossible or just unlikely? Do they just fill smaller parties first?
Sup, goobers. This series most likely won't be a consistent weekly upload until a bit later in the year. For now I'll be trying to upload them as often as possible, but gap weeks are very likely. Cheers!
Thanks for all the content. Thr Mentor stuff may work as a backlog if you ever have a slow or busy week. Try not to go too crazy in there; many a friend of mine has near gone crazy going for the Mentor Mount
I’ve been looking forward to this series so I can’t wait for more videos on your Mentor Roulette journey!
Understandable, cheers.
All good. Git gud grinding those mentors!
Np King, its already impressive that you managed to weave this in between other uploads
Cider, the reason they could tell you were doing mentor roulette is because it forces the battle mentor icon next to your name
I didn’t know that and I was just yelling “GET IT OFF ME” trying to figure out how to get it off 😩 bc it’s a dumb crown
Thankfully no one has been too mean to me for wearing the crown 🙃
That is the one reason keeping me from trying mentor roulette. The pressure the bk crown confers upon me is too much for my dumb fingers.
I also knew it was mad baby, but you're correct!
@@BiskeTheBeast I know all fights and all jobs, and I love mentoring if it's needed, so the crown doesn't bother me in mentor roulette. Meanwhile my brother shines his mentor crown EVERYWHERE but he barely knows anything. He doesn't even have mentor roulette unlocked...
They even force it upon you if you use any of the other Mentor Crowns
"If it's only 4 people it can't be extreme". Rathalos extreme : Am i a joke to you ?
I get Rathalos ex incredibly often in mentor roulette. It generally gets one shot. I wouldn't really consider it to be an extreme trial TBH. It's like calling UWU an ultimate.
it's not a rare one either. I get at least one for every 10 mentor. sometimes I even several times in a row
The amount of people I have found in mentor roulette on RathEx telling me they will not use PF was... Head scratching. I ran into the same person for 4 months solo queing RathEx for the mount. I told them in PF I completed the mount farm in a few days. They reported me for being toxic and lying to them.
Mentor roulette teaches you how awful sprouts can be.
Also, mentor roulette teaches you people do not want to be mentored in this game if you have the symbol by your name.
God bless guildhests. That was easily 1500 of my 2k mentor roulette clears.
@@MrGullisYT To be fair that's not normal, I done my 2nd set of 2000 and got it 24 times. Which seems about right for my first run too. It's normally not that common unless there was a specific farm people were doing at that time.
Rathalos (Savage) Your free trial of living has expired
Livia's fight in the Aitascope has the attack called Aglaea Shot because Aglaea is her gun hand blade things name!!! And Rhitanhtyn's weapon is called Tartarus, hence his attacks using it are called Tatarean Spark and Anvil of Tartarus! Fun facts about dead people
Yep.
More fun trivia, they (along with other ARR quest villains) can appear as zombies in Palace of the Dead.
@@jaeusa160 they can??? Oh that's creepy
@xenonnboy it's actually how people knew Gaius was still alive before post-Stormblood, because he never showed up in there
Speaking of mentor roulette, i was running through Stormblood MSQ on an alt, got to Trial 1 and a mentor that was in the party said "oh thank god, it's normal".
XD You know by that reaction he experienced the extreme version with people that didn't know what to do
wait till your first extreme trial as a mentor those are always priceless and unexpected.
I like them. Except for striking tree. Tanks can't touch balls.
I did thornmarch extreme once in duty finder. I'm never doing it again
@@rustyjones7908did It 2 Times for wt....Not Worth it
My first 2 mentor roulettes were Shiva EX. The very first one was an already ongoing fight and I was replacing the person who left... DURING THE PULL. What a start LMAO
@@rustyjones7908 New Thornmarch EX is a cakewalk, to the point where my last run on mentor was a first try clear. Just gotta have healers keep everyone up, everyone not murdering individual moogles then AoEing them down so Mog wastes more HP for the res casts before you blitz him down.
TLDR: update your gearset before updating your portrait.
fun fact that you'll probably ignore due to Wall-o-text. but, in regards to your "broken portrait." Firstly: They should *absolutely* automate the updating of a portrait when you update your gearset! it's so dumb that they dont.... but secondly, the menu to configure your portrait compares the portrait to your *saved* gearset, while the popup in the duty compares it to the gear you're actively wearing, so if you change something in your gear, and don't update the gearset, the portrait menu doesn't think anything's wrong. but the duty window will see the mismatch and revert to default....
Personally I don't think portrait should be force updated if you change gearset, because I like the idea of customizing your portrait to other gear than what you're using in combat.
@@KainYusanagi that would absolutely work too! But, as it stands right now, they insist on the portrait matching your active glam.... So.,if that's the case, then the least they can do is automatically update the portrait after you Re-save your set!
@@SGManiac1255 Yup, so long as that's insisted upon, I agree that it should auto-update after you re-save your set.
@@KainYusanagi funnily enough...this is how our adventure plates already work....now, pretty please add this technology to portraits devs XD
One of the main reasons you Roulettes are so Chill is because you don't have "Join Party in progress" selected, that's where most of the horror stories are hidden from my experience
There are a lot of horror stories, but you also get a pretty good number of runs where it's just one asshole being impatient and leaving over the smallest issue
True, I've had some of those aswell, some even after the 1st minute due to not liking the instance *cough* A11 *cough*
But like 70% of my Extremes are from Joining in progress compared to normal zone in, some being pretty spicy
@@nargazuba9682 You know what, that's a good tip. I normally keep that turned on because I don't mind helping out on the runs most people have given up on, but that does not apply to ARR Extreme trials, which is one of the more likely to have people abandoning.
Edit: And I immediately forgot to do that, and rolled into an 11 minute Ultima's Bane as a SCH. Pain. Suffering. We cleared on the 5th try. Told the sprouts DON'T QUEUE EXTREME TRIALS IN DUTY FINDER as my parting wisdom.
@@kurosakikun96 ^ the number of exs I've had where we grind through it, the pty is slowly learning and then one mentor finally ups and leaves in impatience only to get a rep battle mentor and clear the next pull is... like at least 400 of my 2000+ runs lol
I keep that off because the last time I had it on, i joined 3 in a row, different queues, where the people were awful and it made a miserable experience. Don't regret that at all.
I finally learned where the solution for the Sunken Temple puzzle is the other day.
They hid it in the first room of the dungeon.
At least it's easy to remember. The solution is "FF". Flame + Fruit
Mind Status = Blown
10 yrs I've played this game.
I knew the answer was at the beginning, but I never looked.
ah yes the flaming fruit, just like me!
The memory phrase I was taught back in the day "One Piece is about Magic Fruit because Fruit Magic would be ridiculous."
with the new version, u dont need to solve it
13:06 That is really funy to me because the most common extreme trial you get in mentor rt is the great hunt and you cant never expect it
Its at least pretty easy. Tell the DPS to run if wrathalos looks at them. fixes most of the wipes there.
From my personal experience, Rath is common, but less common than Ultima EX. Tied with Ramuh and Odin.
@@duncanmacleod6274 As a noob, I queued for Odin because the game literally doesn't tell you that it's on the level of an EX trial. After 30 minutes of inexplicably wiping, I gave up and solo'd the fight unsynced a week later.
@@argentpuck wait, on Odin? I feel like your tanks or healers would have to really suck, or probably both. Odin is barely an EX. It's a pretty straightforward fight except some heavy tankbusters you have to actually read casts for, and a really easy enrage at max Ilevel.
@@duncanmacleod6274 I promise, they were all that bad. This was back during the bad times in 2020, so the newbie population (which included me) was very high.
I don't know if I'm broken or something, but I still will randomly toss myself into Mentor Roulette, even though I got the mount ages ago.
As for actually mentoring people, I usually offer advice on either a wipe, when starting an extreme trial, or if I notice someone doing something horribly incorrectly. Thankfully, the third one is quite rare.
Try turning on "Join in Progress" on occasion. I found that I got placed into dungeons on the final boss quite frequently, though I also had the occasional 0 min EX trial where another Mentor had insta-bailed.
The 7.2k AiN bonus per run is a nice incentive when you're just bored with nothing better to do. Synced EX is fun too.
6:12 the most important part
You make an excellent point but what about 6:11 ?
4:57 - I was the tank in this. 🤣 One of my FC members watches your content and pointed it out. I remember seeing your (very peculiar) glam, had no idea you were a content creator for the game! I hope my 30 second brainless Guildhest left a good impression.
putting on heart of the party title was so funny
So for the portrait breaking even after you've "fixed" it... When you apply a new glam, don't forget to hit the refresh button on the top right of your character sheet (Update Gear Set). People will change their glam, edit their portrait, but not hit that and it breaks. The portrait is looking for the items assigned to your Gear Set, and not hitting that will confuse it, leaving you with your stupid Yearbook photo whenever you enter content. So, apply glam, update gear set, edit portrait, viola!
Also dying your gear or adding materia will confuse the gear set in case other people don't know
@@rustyjones7908 definitely! any change whatsoever, click the Update Gear Set button.
4:51 This Guildheist was my final duty after 81 consecutive days of mentor grinding. Best of luck with your grind.
The mentor roulette on healer will have a different variety than DPS mentor roulette.
On healer or tank a lot more of them end up being dungeons on dps its more evenly distributed.
My tally is a bit different but as follows for anyone interested:
750/2000 (25 a day)
27 extremes + 8 vote abandoned extremes
>Moogle king is the worst one
>Ultima weapon is the best one and easier than the MSQ version "pop orbs with pals"
>most frequent is Monster Hunter EX.
4 alliance raids
12 praetoriums
7 Ultima weapon (MSQ)
7 castrum meridianum
(it is faster to do them than to take the penalty)
I’ve always pronounced it as Haukke (Hawk) Manor cause auger is awe-grrrr. Fun videos!
Same. Hawk Manor FTW
i recognise the lala tank from dzamael. we did eureka together :D
very much looking forward to seeing how the mentor roulette unfolds! and the totals at the end as well. i'm not particularly interested in unlocking mentor roulette myself, but i've heard all sorts of things about it, so watching it unfold in semi real time will be very fun :)
The way I've remembered the Qarn puzzle for almost a decade now is "Flaming Fruit" = it's a pop tart you put in the toaster. Flame goes on the left, fruit goes on the right, then you push the toaster handle. It's so dumb that' it's unforgettable.
Another good one is to remember that the fLame goes on the Left and the fRuit goes on the Right.
19:59 My ears perk up a bit whenever Cider Spider mentions Lancer or Dragoon.
I've never heard him mention DRG. I think that's the joke tho. There is no DRG. Only LNC.
I don’t even have to watch to be entertained just listening to you keeps me entertained while I’m working
The math on this is frankly tragic. Not on the duties, but on the timing. At a pace of 10 duties on Mentor Roulette each week, this grind will take just under 4 years. Godspeed, Cider
A fun fact, while they may be technically trials in a sense, Bowl of Ember, The Navel, and Howling Eye are queued outside of mentor via the Levelling Roulette. One of those situations I had to look to be sure they were even considered a Trial at all, since you won't get them via the Trial roulette.
It's always nice when going into Levelling for some tomestones and getting one of the first 3 trials to quick kill.
As for mentor roulette. So far for my EX fights, I've gotten Ifrit once, Titan a couple times, but mostly I get Shiva. None of them are really all too hard. I did get Ramuh one time, and we could have likely killed him if wasn't for an impatient sprout tank ruining the mood. That said Ramuh was what they used Titan Egi to cheese a lot in the day(pissing the designers at SE off XD), so I don't feel bad having issues with it. I did get the EX for Ultima Weapon too, which was fun to do at level 50 synched after learning it via the Unreal.
I can't wait to unlock mentor roulette just for the experience of doing these old Extremes with some clueless sprouts lol. There's a certain magic to watching a group go from totally clueless to a polished (well, more polished) fighting machine. Doing MINE content in Party Finder scratches that itch, but there's something extra funny about managing it with sprouts who didn't even realize it was hard content lol.
I used to use Titan to tank King Moggle Mog EX as well so the whole party could completely ignore him while they knocked down the mogglesguard
3:47 at the entrance there is a tablet showing the combination, i think you need to do it one time for the map achievement
You can technically bruteforce the combination, but you do need to open and enter all of the vaults as well as finish the final puzzle to clear the map. The vaults all have a symbol on them that matches the keystone, though.
I love the background you’ve made for this series, the baby lala chair is the perfect touch 😂 looking forward to see how you go with the next round of trials
Hitting the update gear set button in the character window and then going back to check the portrait again sometimes fixes it, I've found
the thing about mentor roulette is that the people you're filling-in for aren't specifically looking for a mentor, they're just looking to do the content. So unless there's problems, its just like every other roulette you could do, there's no need to -baby- full grown lalafell them
Front row seats for Mentor Queue grind? Sign me up
20:32 The tank knows because the roulette forces you into a battle mentor tag. Even if you're a full crown mentor normally, it overrides with the battle mentor icon during the roulette. That icon in duty almost always means mentor roulette.
These videos are great for teaching us sprouts little tips and tricks. Thanks for the content!
Well good luck, Cider! I will be praying for you. ^_^
Also, I think it's because you need to requip your gear set to reapply your glamour to unbreak your portrait. I've had that issue before.
Discovered your channel a little over a month ago and I have enjoyed watching all of your stuff! Keep it up brother, good luck with your mentor roulette grind!
7:11 *complaing about no mits right as the dark knight presses reprisal is very funny to see*
For Sunken Temple: fLame = Left, fRuit = Right.
Hope that helps!
as some who has done the 2000 roulettes, you WILL get the Rathalos mount long before finishing. So youll end up knowing that extreme down to a science.
Really? At my current rate, I'm only on track to do like 15 runs of Rath by the time I'm done. I've had 5 so far out of 700+ runs, and people actually quit one of them.
If you can find something to do for 1 to 5 minutes in between queues, DPS is definitely preferable to the other roles. You want to minimize the number of dungeons you get, and in my own testing on mentors the ratio was around 33% dungeons as DPS, 49% dungeons as Tank, and 85% dungeons as Heals. (it really was that bad) You get way more Guildhests as DPS over Tanks. 11% of all my DPS mentors ended up being Under the Armor. Sub 2 minute clears.
I paired my mentor roulettes with the 30k gathers on Island and the gather # of times in ARR areas (at certain level ranges). Worked very well to fill the couple of minutes in-between.
Your commentary always makes your videos fun to watch. Looking forward to more Mentor fun.
I really do enjoy these videos and the live streams(when i can catch them). Your content got me to start going for achievements as well, slowly approaching top 4K on my server. Working on island and beast tribe achievements and getting crafter/gathers 90 right now, slow and steady =)
ooh boy good luck on these! I occasionally do a few as part of my roulettes when I want tomes (not anymore, staying capped before Dawntrail lol) and it's been quite chill. I've had a few ARR Extremes, but it was usually like 1-2 sprouts that caught up quickly and we ended up clearing or it was Leviathan and we almost finished the lockout timer before people started leaving. Pretty average I'd say.
As with most stuff in this game I tend to not force my way into teaching people, it's often seen as rude and can cause unnecessary tension. If they ask and I know it, I'll oblige, but let them die first like we all did at some point XD
Ayyy I just got into this game like 9 days ago and I’ve been trying to find a creator that didn’t make me wanna pull my hair out. Thank you!!
It begins...
20:00 right around there, was that the first time in this whole series he's even mentioned lancers?
You have to click the button to reassign your gear to your gearset. The portrait is based on what's in your gear set, that's why they break.
Dzemael darkhold did have that side winding area with the toads, and they could grab you from below. Caused a lot of wipes back in the day. They changed it in early endwalker i think. When they did a lot of dungeon mechanic changes, like the stack/spread sohm al indicators
We know the fuckery will happen eventually don’t worry. In other news, I now hear Cider Spider narration for my own achievements. “Tank you, warrior I - five points.” 😂 and I love it.
Super thank you for running mentor as sch! I've been so scared to run it as I'm not super confident on my fav being sch at all lvls... but watching you play sch in all things has given me much more confidence! ❤🎉Can't wait for more Mentor Rous!
Learning ffxiv and I just happen to stumble onto your channel, enjoyed the content and the calming DEEP VOICE
I dunno if I’m a psycho or something but I do Mentor roulettes because it’s more content. Also get to do less common stuff sometimes.
Have some engagement! (And maybe this'll help someone out)
Yeah, the portrait bug happens where sometimes when you swap out the glam on an item it'll say "Oh, you didn't change gear, I guess you don't need to update this" where the dungeon goes "WHOA, YOU LOOK DIFFERENT! DEFAULT MODE!" The fix is to lightly click the angle for a pixel and then it'll let you save.
I really hope they fix that.
"We should probably rework the ARR trials" I remember queuing into Ifrit normal for the first time with a bunch of sprouts who were also there for the first time i think and we wiped cus none of us attacked the nail. This was like a year ago. Good times, good times.
On my first time in that content we wiped because not enough of us attacked the nail (I did not know I had to).
If cider does 10 roulettes every video, get ready for FOUR YEARS of this! Get excited everyone
This video gave me the courage to finally try mentor roulette. My first duty... The Striking Tree (Extreme). Props to the sprouts, we did it...
Oh, having that total tally is a fantastic idea. I'm pretty stoked to see what your running amounts are going to end up being. I would recommend adding separate ones, or at least keeping a side tally of which EX trials, specifically, that you get. For me, the most common ones have been Ramuh, Shiva, and Levi, all from ARR. And also a side tally for Castrum Meridianum & Praetorium. As someone who is only about a quarter of the way there, (just past 550 Mentor Roulettes), I have had a... rather disturbing trend, on occasion...
I'm still working on the comms for combat mentor, but I've also heard those horror stories from FC members. I both don't envy you when it happens but can't wait to hear the commentary lol. Good luck Cider and congrats on your well-earned 5 POINTS! Side note: Completed an achievement FATE yesterday and read the title and points acquired in your voice lmao, Special Tarasque Force 10 POINTS.
To fix your portrait, I’d try swapping to a different job and back and then check it. And I’d also recommend making sure every equipment slot on your glamour plate is filled because that’s caused me issues in the past for shared gear sets.
That’s my experience at least.
For the Dsemael Darkhold side area (the one with the frogs and the death that everyone fell off of and then turned into a death cycle), they removed that a while ago due to the aforementioned death cycles. It was wild going back into there and not having access to that side lol
Edit: Just finished watching the video! Thank you for sharing your journey and I can't wait to see how Mentor Roulette goes for you!
Man i really need to catch your streams. Your voice is just. So nice to listen to. Cant wait to see more of these
im just thankful for the content mate. play whatever u want for the week
This is how you do a mentor roulette vid. No pissing and moaning. Just having fun with it. Good stuff.
The portrait was broken because it's connected to your gear set, so you have to save it when you make any change at all, including melds. It's dumb and I wish it was using the Adventure Plate system where you can save it once and it'll stay no matter your gear, but oh well... Since I linked gearset + adv plate (full left and right side) I had way less broken portraits, but that works well only when you don't change gear often, so once you're BiS I guess...
Yeah, dzamael was reworked some time ago with some other ARR content. They removed falling off the cliff (and removed a KB ability form the frogs.) I'm sure there were other changes but that's all I recall.
/sees the save glamour button unpressed and knows why portrait isn't working lol
Also, more ppl, dzemael terminal countsdown faster :D
the more people in the switch in dzemael is incorrect, that was a thing in 1.0, got changed for 2.0
I'm genuinely baffled as to how this misinfo is still in circulation.
@@deathsythe238 Literally just saw it tested on another channel within the last couple months.
@@deathsythe238 ua-cam.com/video/c5BnSzyIG_g/v-deo.htmlsi=DP6qviwFn5zLpbN4&t=310
The first optional varies per # of peopele - the rest goes from 20s with 1 person to 10s with 2+.
your portrait was broken there because you didn't update your gearset. the system checks the gear you're wearing, not the glam covering it. if what you're using doesn't match what's registered on your gearset, the portrait breaks and defaults to the placeholder starter portrait
I decided to do Guildhests for the first time ever the other day (I have every job to max level). It took most of half an hour to get into the final 8-man hest and I wish I'd paid attention to how many crowns were in the party.
7:07 “Such is poor cover for when the heavens fall.”
During the great WoW exodus, the mentor roulette was wild.
I do the majority of my mentor roulettes on SMN. I figured I'd get a wider variety of things that way, plus SMN always has resurrection (came in handy for a few random EX trials and normal raids where people just got killed fast). Queue times as DPS were never that long either since mentor roulette is for basically everything
Cool tips, I plan to main scholar, so I will be keeping an eye on this channel. Guides are nice, but watching and learning from actual action is better for me. Also tank tips are helpful, since the role always intimidates me.
Another thing worth tracking if you're going for DATA is how often you get Second Chance points/first-timer bonus. That's the biggest thumb on the scale for Mentor Roulette, trying to fill out first-time runs, which makes it nice for catbooks. Guildhests don't check for first-timer, but they're basically free anyway.
Looking forward to the series! As a mentor roulette veteran, as many may tell you, the data suggests you get many more dungeons as healer or tank -- very likely for the reason you mentioned. Going DPS could speed up the process. (The queues are still fast.) That way, you get fewer dungeons. .........But would it be good content? Eh, whatever. You do you, cool dude!
speaking as a materia player the entirety of my mentor roulette is just dungeons and msq roulette, I'd give anything for a mixture of guildhests and insane extremes to break that up
Oh Mentor Roulette. What a wild pile of chaos. I have gotten everything from Sastasha to Ramuh EX to Porta Decumana to Rathalos (both normal and EX) and even current content like Vanaspati or Smileton. It's always a ride. I usually do one a day.
I was part of a mentor's horror story once. Or maybe there was multiple. But, my friend and I queued for an Extreme duty for the first time ever (and last I think lol) and it was Shiva. I don't remember if we chose that, or if we signed up for all of them to just get whichever filled fastest (though it still took over an hour to actually get in). And then we spent the whole hour of the trial wiping, and occasionally sitting around trying to fill numbers because people abandoned. Which, I can't fully blame them. But the advice wasn't sinking in to the tanks new to the duty (and probably us, but it hurts the most when the tank doesn't turn her at the right time) I'm not even sure if we finished it or not, but I'm sure the patient mentors who stuck with us were tearing their hair out. Needless to say, my friend and I have done all other extremes unsynched, because we are not built for high-level content, lol
I've been on the Mentor grind too, and something that's served me well is using a website to roll a random job every time I queue. I ran my first 800 or so exclusively on Sage, "in order to carry Extremes," but I've found that most of the time that approach was either not necessary or didn't make the difference in clearing or not. Random jobs, on the other hand, keeps me fresh with jobs I don't normally play and is much less tedious in general. The switch made me realize that healers specifically also get far more dungeons and Extremes, as opposed to guildhests, normal trials and normal raids, than tanks and especially DPS do, so my inclination to keep to my healer main roots was actually an act of self-sabotage.
Back when I streamed I did a goofy stream once where I put on an irl burgerking crown and just hardqueued mentor roulette on repeat for a few hours.
I got Shiva Extreme, Garuda Extreme, Leviathan Extreme twice, and Ramuh Extreme **3 times**.
one of my best friends recently finished his mentor roulette grind. for his very last 10, we made an event of it. everyone in the fc who was available would queue for different EX trials, and if anyone managed to drag him into one with them, he'd give them like a million gil prize. it was a blast tbh, and a few people got him. at the end after he finished his 2000th, we all synced ramuh EX together, since that had been the biggest thorn in his side across all his roulettes
So about the portrait system, anything that causes the "update gear" button to light up will mess up your portrait. So anytime you extract materia, toggle your hat on or off, toggle visor, etc just hit that button and make sure it's greyed out. If that still doesn't fix it then you might need to update the portrait itself to reflect current gear.
i was writing a comment on how i liked the way you counted how many dungeons vs guildhests vs trials you did and was going to ask you keep it up,,,just as the graphic at the end of the video popped up. read my mind there.
good vid, i look forward to watching the rest of the series too!
Really embarrassing that my portrait broke when i queued into that aitascope run with you lol
The Mentor Roulette strat to make it more entertaining is to data center travel to Aether and to queue as a dps. Doing this will increase your odds of getting an extreme as high as they can go. Recently finished my 2000 with this strat. Would have torn my hair out if I had to do Castrum/Prae/Low level dungeons as healer for that many runs for sure!
Yes Portraits are a pain. A workaround is to re save your equipment set, usually just using recommended gear will allow you to resave without really changing anything. then go into portraits and resave your portrait. Yes it's a p.i.t.a. but it usually works. Hope they fix it soon.
From doing the 2000 mentor roulette achievement myself I'd say that healer mostly ends up with dungeons, queueing tank during the weekend ends up with an extreme trial and DPS is quite well rounded. Highly recommend "join party in progress" for some of the messier (but fun) duties!
As a sprout, I queued for at least a few extremes before I was made aware that it was not the way people did EX trials. BUT I will say that among those was one of my most memorable experiences early in the game. Specifically, I managed to get into The Striking Tree EX and, miraculously, we were able to beat it. It took almost the entire instance time and at the time I didn't realize how insane that was but looking back I can't believe that we did it!
Around 28:50 Actually the four man Trails are counted as dungeons, i know because you can get them only on the leveling roulette not the proper trail roulette. I know because im in the process of leveling all my classes and some i begun from level 1 had 4 man trails appear on the leveling roulette.
3:49 The stone thingie in Qarn is always "Fire + Fruit", so think of it as a pepper. If you don't wanna bother with it, you can put no weight and just run the Scales of Judgement to fail faster.
I've done a couple hundred mentor roulettes, and I've kept a spreadsheet of what I got as what job (with the goal of keeping the number of runs I do even across all 19 jobs). I will say that for healer, 75% of what I've gotten so far have been dungeons, with a smattering of MSQ and guildhests filling up the bulk of the rest of my healer runs. Tanks also skew towards dungeon, but the real variety in content comes in when I queue as DPS.
So if you want variety from mentor roulette, I'd advise trying DPS every so often. Then again, the queues take a while to pop and dungeons as healer aren't hard... so just sticking as a healer the whole way through is mega tempting.
You're not crazy about the Dzemael thing. I remember that drop too. i dreaded that drop. i fell to that drop so many times.
Either they removed it or they rearranged it so the drop isnt there but you have to take a loop back downwards instead of pressing on. feels like that.
But man, that drop was a killer. Then again those were the days where you did full clears of the dungeon cause it was more EXP...
Back in the ARR days I had to do Dzemael 40 times to get one stupid drop for my relic. That place is my personal hell so I feel your pain
Your videos are awesome, keep it up!
Not only did that second Sohm Al boss previously have the stack-but-not-a-stack-marker, the marker it DID have was the opposite colour to what people traditionally knew stack markers to be.
He was a bastard of a boss for newbies before Squeenix normalised the markers.
i just love how while im watching this I just see child labor on the left side😂
sorry if my DRK was a bit rough in dzaemel, I was still learning at the time :)
17:10 someone forgot to update glams more than just making the profile; and it happens more than what you think
It’s worth mentioning this is the only roulette where your role choice (tank, healer or DPS) can influence what you get. DPS tend to get a wide variety, tanks less so with a slightly higher focus on 8-man content and dungeons, with healers getting mostly dungeons.
that is wild, my first 20 mentor roulettes were 50% ARR extreme trials that took like 45 minutes each
I can help with the portrait BS.
1) if you have a plate attached, THAT appearance is king. If you change it for any reason, it will not give you an error message, you are just left in the dark.
- the fix: remove assigned glam plate from that job then readjust the portrait.
This is the biggest issue but other item:
1) updating gear (sometimes adding materia or extracting materia in any way even knocks this loose).
Keeping track of the data will be interesting, I think you should also keep track of exactly what thing you get assigned to as well.
17:10 you can see here that you havent saved your current gear set (the save button isn't pressed). so even if all the gear you are wearing matches the portrait it wont work till you save your gear set and then update your portrait
About 400 runs left for me, but I have to say the scariest thing is not the content itself but what gets ADDED ONTO IT every future patch, expansion, or content.
I don't think I've scampered as fast as I have to get Astrope when Dawntrail dropped and I realized I didn't have to do the current EXs. But if I wait, I eventually WILL.
