    For her age and still singing this difficult piece is awe-inspiring... Even for Sutherland who retired late in her life would be impressed with this one, im sure... Gruberova has always been a great coloratura and with age, the voice does deteriorate- it is evident in her voice- but to sing like this, is just crazy... :-)

    I agree completely with you. I was in the audience, on the very last row, and heard every single note. That's the power of a well focused pianissimo,it reaches far greater distances than an unfocused forte. She is very well audible in the pianissimi.

    @jmiller05 - I have known her for years, and sure the voice is a bit older and it is a bit audible yet -but the "bit" means she can still kick ass at the highest registers carress you to dreams... But THIS is real bel-canto, that is why her voice never sounds harsh, no tone is raped and placed exactly where it needs to be. The agility of her voice and its perfect command are proof, that this is singing as it should be. Though nicer timbres - you might find. Who does sing like this at her age?

  • @MrSwifts31
    @MrSwifts31 12 років тому

    I agrree danny maestro,to be able to sing so well at 60 shows her intelligence.
    Why~
    Because(unlike many sopranos we won't mention) Gruberova has never strayed outside her fach.She sings what she knows her instrument can produce,and as such has a voice at 60 that many sopranos half her age would die for.
    Isn't it satisfying when we meet a singer who has the courage and determination not to be lured from her vocal place by managers etc
    Of course being born with sheer talent helps!

    I was in the audience and have to disagree with you: her pianissimo's are indeed very very soft (intented) but still audible.
    Edita takes back power on the high notes to prevent screeming (as other sopranos do to force out the high notes).

  • @elisabetta611
    @elisabetta611 15 років тому

    Oh, I adore Renee Fleming in the right rep. (Strauss, Massenet etc.) Hmmm, sopranos I love? Ponselle, Callas, Gencer, L. Price, L. Vargicova, M. Subtrova (Sp?), Elinor Ross, Joan Sutherland (In the right rep.), Gruberova as Queen of the Night, Konstanze and Zerbinetta, Edda Moser, C. Muzio, I. Cotrubas, E. Grümmer and MANY more! :))

  • @jmiller05
    @jmiller05 14 років тому

    @Hupjeflupje Fair enough. Her pianisimmos probably sound better live and in the flesh.
    I do think they restrict her from making smooth legato transitions though.

  • @elisabetta611
    @elisabetta611 15 років тому

    Bel Canto pieces ARE NOT show off pieces for vain prima donnas. Granted, they were often abused as such, that does not explain away the uselessness of the whole "ornamenting because I can" nonsense. I love ornaments as much as anyone. The brilliant stuff Callas and Bernstein came up with for La Sonnambula for example. But ornaments are part of the DRAMA. Callas understood this. Even a brainless aria like Lakme's Bell Aria can make dramatic sense. The whole ornamenting fetish always eluded me.

  • @elisabetta611

  • @Cedricfollyman
    @Cedricfollyman 13 років тому +1

    I think that the huge glissando up to the high Eb was unnecesasy, and i felt this piece would have been better served if she had landed onto the note instead of sliding into it. Otherwise,it very lovely indeed. . . He colouratura comes with such ease and is almost flutelike :D

    I think around 2007 was the time where she was still marvelous but should have retired from this repertory. She was a miracle in her long, long prime of the 80s and 90s, even amazing at the beginning of this century (little bit too much scooping in my opinion). I heard her 2010 in Traviata, that wasn't pleasing. But the last years now were horrible, shrill screams out of tune in the top, scooping-festivals and howling deep notes. She had the chance for a dignified farewell with other stuff but she still wanted to perform grandma-versions of Lucia. The end was painful.

  • @elisabetta611

    She tops Sutherland in absolutely nothing.

  • @jmiller05
    @jmiller05 12 років тому

    Oh, I'm not doubting her technique. Her remarkable technique is the basis for her being able to sing such hefty coloratura roles well into her 60's. The voice is still supple and accurate. That's not in question.
    My problems with Gruberova is the usual- her endless scooping, ridiculous embellishments that distort the melody and legato line (just watch her sing Norma to understand what I mean).
    She's a fine singer, but not infallible to some very bad habits in Bel Canto.

  • @elisabetta611

  • @jmiller05

    Gruberova is notorious for her scooping. It's an actual musical crime in Bel Canto repertoire quite frankly.

  • @elisabetta611
    @elisabetta611 15 років тому

    It's not. It shows her lack of respect for the composers of this divine music and her need to show off. Tasteless in my opinion.

  • @elisabetta611
    @elisabetta611 15 років тому

    Her Italian diction is better than Sutherland's but nothing special. Yes, her legato in the upper register. Let her sing a low scale and see how she'll come across.

  • @bellini7verdi
    @bellini7verdi 14 років тому

    esta es una obra dramatica de coloratura belcantista........me reafirmo .....en que a buen entendedor pocas palabras vastan......ni la mas remota comparacion ni con sutherland ni con callas........estos gorrioncillos estaran para otra cosa.....pero no para estos papeles..........estos papeles son de mucho peso vocal.......y no es el fuerte de edita gruveroba......asi que por mi ....que vaya al otorrino otro...yo tengo mi oido perfectamente.......

  • @elisabetta611
    @elisabetta611 15 років тому

    Oh really? That "rubbish" is an opinion shared by many. The composer's will is more important than that of any showy prima donna. Even Adelina Patti had to learn that when, after singing "Una voce poco fa", Rossini himself asked her "Lovely. But who wrote it?". Now, Gruberova isn't as grating as Mado Robin... But I'm with the critic who sighed "Full of notes and empty of sense!" when it comes to her kind.

    Pianissimo's are indeed softer than hitting a forte note, but they should still be resonant and not under pitch. Gruberova always sounds like she's swallowing the sound rather than projecting the sound over the orchestra.

    Edita did better in her past than this performance. Am I the one this sounds not so good? Why is she still singing at her old age? She was unforgettable, but now is over...
    Mi sembra che a tratti canti in maniera arronzona e cialtrona. Non stacca tra un acuto e l'altro e sembra che, a tratti, stia solo gridando lamenti. A una certa età nessuno la obbliga a mantenere nel repertorio il belcanto più ardito

    I honestly don't like gruberova... her voice usually has ups and downs during the performances. her voice is usually thin. i don't like her timing nor her theatrical interpretation. She has some history of good performing in the past but nothing out of the ordinary. that's my opinion...
    The best Spargi D'Amaro Pianto i've heard is the version sang by Edda Moser. Her voice is very large and she is wonderfully theatrical. I admit that her final E isn't reaally good, but does not affect the rest.

  • @jmiller05
    @jmiller05 14 років тому

    Her pianisimmos are not strong enough. They basically become inaudible.
    Not enough impact on the high notes.

  • @jmiller05
    @jmiller05 11 років тому

    For anyone singing in private, this is great singing, but when a singer in public tries to sing extremely virtuoso pieces way past their prime, it becomes vulgar to me and incredibly self-serving.
    You should always serve the music first and seek to do it professional justice. Gruberova singing everything (Norma, Lucrezia, Norma, Roberto Devereux) when she hasn't the voice to sing them anymore is not impressive. It's against the service needed to the music.
