    Brother, at the begining of the video you are holding heaven with austrian Evva...a Kaba penta or quattro, cmon, those are extremely high quality locks. Even just attempting to pick em is an act of great courage and determination that i certainly do appreciate. Keep up!

    The Kaba 8 was developed and patented in 1934, and probably was the world's first dimple lock. Not bad for an 80 year old design.

    Well, in the end, at least in most modern houses here in Spain, the weak point is not the lock, but the door frame. Most locks are very crazy indeed, even my front fence door has a 8-pin lock, and it's just one meter high. Thieves normally dont even bother with the lock, they just pry the friggin' frame out. It's amazing how badly most builders install security doors.

    • @garychap8384
      @garychap8384 8 років тому +2

      Euro cylinders can be snapped faster and quieter than prying the frame. The only tool you need is a monkey wrench... which is far more deniable and concealable than a crowbar or jemmy. But you're right - fancy anti-pick strategies don't make a damned bit of difference - cus burglars use whatever is easiest ... and they typically don't give a rats ass about lockpicks.
      Once again, the industry addresses completely the wrong problem.

    • @aigarslv
      @aigarslv 7 років тому

      GaryChap I have euro locks that have a special snap line - they are designed to snap on that line and does not allow entry.

    • @garychap8384
      @garychap8384 7 років тому +1

      aigarslv yes, however the lock in the video incorporated anti-picking strategies but no anti-snap and were considered "difficult" in the video.
      Hence my statement : "Once again, the industry addresses completely the wrong problem."
      The snappable cylinders are still being manufactured, and my local locksmith is still installing them as standard - and when you ask about anti-snap he says its "Just a gimmick" ... despite it being the number one criminal entry technique in Yorkshire and spreading across the country fast AND despite repeated warnings being given by the locksmiths association to their affiliates.
      Oh, he also charges 120 a callout and 60 a lock - and I've seen his work. He installed a back door symmetric in place of an asymmetric with three quarters of an inch protruding on the outside (measured from the flush) ... the lock proudly proclaims "high security anti-pick" and a tonne of kitemarks and stuff.
      He literally couldn't have done a better job if he was working for the criminals... and he KNOWS about the snapping epidemic.
      So, unfortunately the cheaper, poorly designed euro locks are still being manufactured and sold as 'high security' because of these anti-tamper pins.
      But if you look at burglary statistics, it is immediately evident that criminals really don't give a damn about lock picking.
      It annoys me that consumers are being ripped off and basic security is being used as a ploy to market expensive locks, whilst cheap ineffective "high security" locks continue to dominate the market.
      IMO this crap needs to be taken off the market legislatively.

    I am actually from Thun and I just looked at my bunch of keys and there are
    a Kaba 8
    a Keso 1000
    a Sea 2
    and some other Keys
    I thought it would've been cool to see the Sea 2 and literally in this moment you pulled up the Sea 3 in the Video.
    What I like most about the Sea locks is that when you've inserted the Key from the inside, you can't even get into the Keyway from the outside. Genious
    Insane.

    • @garychap8384
      @garychap8384 8 років тому +2

      I wouldn't ... just because they're anti-pick doesn't mean they're safe. They are not! In fact, the europrofile is one of the burglars favourites ATM. See my post above for how and why.

    • @garychap8384
      @garychap8384 8 років тому +2

      LOL. Do you have the dog to go with it? If so ... excellent security: D
      I'm actually praying for a burglary as I live alone and don't have kids. I do have some tricks up my sleeve though...
      My sony bravia TV has a GPS+GSM chip tied to a low power PIC chip (think, Arduino, but tiny) and four 18650's charged piggyback off the mains power. I can send an SMS and it replies with a link to a google map of its current position using googles GPS Locator API. I can also ask it to lock itself down (it wakes up every 60 to 3600 seconds configurable to check its position) and then it messages me if it is more than 20m away from it's lockdown position. At 3 minute checking intervals the battery lasts about three and a half weeks. At 10 minute intervals it should be months.
      So I can basically get an SMS letting me know I've been burgled, watch them drive away, listen live to the burglars audio as they sit in their house on the loot and hear them panic as the PoPo kick in their door and arrest the F'ing garbage.
      My HiFi is also rigged with an older version of the same kit and my PC is getting one next week which I have added realtime tracking to ... basically instead of SMS'ing it sends rapid UDP updates to an android app I'm working on so I can tell the police where they are and if they turn left at the lights : )
      The new one also has a very loud piezo warbler, so if there is any ambiguity (high density housing, flats, etc) they can get in roughly the right place and call me - and I'll fire the alarm remotely. I'd rather not though - as I'd prefer them to sit in a cell wondering how the hell they got busted.
      So, basically... If I never get burgled then I'll miss out on all the fun of getting my shit back : )
      Don't ya just love digital electronics : D ... I do like your solution though... they might get in but good luck gettin' out ; )

    I had a key like that second one for my University accommodation in the UK. One row of pins was for the front doors of the block, and the other row of pins opened my room: so only one key was necessary for both doors, but only I could access my room.

    • @markdefish
      @markdefish 7 років тому

      That's a really cool design. Never heard of anything like that before. Do you remember a brand?

    • @johnlapage599
      @johnlapage599 7 років тому

      Unfortunately not! I'm not even sure they had any branding on them, since it was such a large institution. I think it's a way of doing Maison keying but without compromising the lock by adding shear points. The keys might be more expensive, but the actual locks would only need one row of normal pins.
      Not that it really matters...University halls are some of the least secure 'secure' places in the world. Unless the local pizza delivery guys had some sort of master ninja who kept getting in some other way!

    Why are there so many "standard" pin tumbler locks out there, trying to be "highly secure", when so many manufactures is able to produce such nasty locks? Every time I hear you say "this is a very nasty lock, not many people out there can pick it", I can't help but to think "why the f**k ain't all locks made like that then" ;).
    I know the production cost is a big deal, but I don't get why all "regular" Ruko house locks (I live in Denmark) doesn't have a nasty key way - just an example.. Why do they add security pins to prevent pick locking, but keep an easy access for a lock pick?
    Why is the EVA 3KS or the Haldemann SEA 3 such rare, exotic products, when they seem 100 times better than every house key and padlock I can find in my local hardware store?
    Also, great channel - I really like your work!

      Daniel Domino seems like a case of tunnel vision, and lack of understanding interconnection. The designers were thinking only of the simplicity of picking regular pins. That was THE focus. An obsession if you will. However when in that mindset, you lose the ability to take anything else into consideration. That's my guess.

    • @EugenNiedaszkowski
      @EugenNiedaszkowski 7 років тому

      Daniel, it is a challenge for a lockpicker but not for a burglar. They can bend these parts of keyhole plate, drill it, file it, use liquid nitrogen. Of course, it is not always possible.
      Bill and other UA-cam lockpickers try to show their skills. Usually they work as locksmiths and help people open locks without damaging them.
      Criminals often do not mind damaging locks and for them a sofisticated keyhole is not a problem.

    BTW , the Vachette should have very wierd shaped pins. Almost torpedo shaped.

  • @spacepirateivynova
    @spacepirateivynova 8 років тому

    For some of those ridiculous paracentric gates, I made a pick set out of some very stiff/springy thin allen wrenches that I smoothed over at different SPP useful angles. The tight keyways require using about 3 or 4 of these picks at different angles sometimes to be able to push the pins far enough while not pushing other pins.
    I'm looking into various gauges of spring steel wire to test the tighter entries, but rod-based picks are a lot tricker to use and require a lot of work and practice compared to a good half-diamond or standard flat pick. You REALLY need to file them nice and rounded to prevent hangups on the inside of the lock.

    I'm not sure how well it would work, but possibly cut some X-Ray film into a tip for a pick that you mount by whatever means you figure out to the end of an otherwise strait pick? Just an idea, pretty sure it won't last too long, but it should be flexible enough, with feedback.

    The one @1:54 looks very much like the key to the storage locker room in the basement of my apartment block.
    It has some electronics inside the plastic part of the key, that interact with the lock
    When they installed the locks I slid off the plastic on the key because I thought it was too bulky on my key ring, but then the key wouldn't open the lock anymore.
    Fortunately I didn't throw away the thing, so after I slid it back on, the key was working again.
    BTW, the lock goes "BIP" when you insert the key. If you use the wrong key it goes "BIIIP BIIIP BIIIP BIIIP".

    Why are euro locks so much more secure than US locks? Do we want ours to be so easy to pick?
    Also, where can I find one of those pin trays you use in your videos?

    • @brazeiar9672
      @brazeiar9672 9 років тому +2

      Dan Wesson Different standards. The US tends to side with lower standards and so more profits for the producer. Burglars don't tend to pick locks, they just go through unlocked doors and windows.

    • @techtrain65
      @techtrain65 8 років тому

      +Braze IAR I work for a lock manufacturer. The cheaper locks have a lower profit margin. The reason we don't see more high security lock designs in the U.S. is all about demand. We don't have that many lock picking burglaries here so the public does not see the need for high security locks. If there was a significant demand, we'd offer higher security locks.

      I have to agree, and interestingly German lock pickers find most of those locks "easy" that bill has not picked yet. I believe that some of them may be cheating in their abilities to pick these locks.

    • @wupme
      @wupme 7 років тому

      Yes and they are not even expensive. I got an Abus dimple lock with 2 rows of pins and side pins. Was like 50€
      I don't call 50€ expensive for something that protects my entire household.
      Biggest weakness in German doors is the bolt in the door itself. Sometimes they on go like 2mm deep, even when fully engaged.
      Or that the cylinder protrudes like 5-6 mm and you can rip it out with a good pair of Tongue-and-groove pliers.
      The later is because they sometimes use retarded sizes for the initial cylinders that you can't get on the after market.

      +Graham Pearson many of those locks have reinforcement around the screwway where it's weakest. The ones that are just brass. yes they are not secure due to the Euro design's built in weakness. I myself have gone for the ABS which if snapped seize up the cam.

      I have done a video on the Abus Pfaffenhain XY Deltus lock showing both active and passive pins. I am also going to do a video on the Abus Bravus 4000 soon also showing and explaning active and passive pins. Just go to my channel and search for "Deltus" and you should be able to find it :) active pins are pins that are usually spring loaded where as passive springs are usually not spring loaded and therefore also easier to set!

    I need a good unique 40/45 lock for my new apartment in Eastern Europe. If someone can recommend something unique not found here to throw off burglars because break ins are awfully common here.

    • @garychap8384
      @garychap8384 8 років тому

      Ask the local police or an emergency locksmith how many break-ins involve picking. It's almost none. Here in the UK almost 30% of break ins involving euro cylinders are simply performed using a monkey wrench to snap the lock down the weak drilled centre and pull out the front half. The rest are split between forcing the frame or destroying the door or a door panel. Picking accounts for less than 1%.
      Even simple bump keys are rare as they can take longer than other methods and require the criminal to carry a bump set which means he can be found carrying items with no lawful purpose. He may as well be carrying a signed confession letter. A monkey wrench is fast and, by comparison, is credibly deniable.
      I'd advise avoiding euro cylinder locks completely. If you MUST use one, I'd spend money getting one with anti-snap instead of a fancy key... at least anti-snap attempts to address the actual tactics of criminals. Fancy anti-pick keys are cute and fun but ultimately your burglar probably won't even notice.
      A false sense of security is worse than no security at all.

    Regarding the Evva 3KS: There are a bunch of pickers having picked them successfully. ImSchatten360 has picked it on UA-cam (he is trustworthy!)
    Another guy, who has an interesting approach to picking high-security locks (he uses a fibre wire to illuminate the inside of the lock so that he can, has a description on his blog: unlocked.own-hero.net/2013/03/19/picking-slider-based-high-security-locks---part-2-evva-3ks/ - he also is very trustworthy - you can find him on all kinds of lockpicking competitions around Germany.
    Regarding your Abus EC (probably EC750/850 judging by the key and keyway): I've picked a similar one (EC550 - only difference: two passive pins instead of 4 in EC750/850) - from my point of view it is fairly easy to pick but the warding and the passive pins can give you a hard time. If you got something that feels like a really deep false set but you can't find a responding pin, it might be that you already picked the lock but triggered one of the passive pins in the process.
    Ad Evva DPI: You picked something with a similar keywar in your video #126 :P I have never seen one of these with 7 pins btw. - only 5 and 6 pinners. That's interesting! Also all sidebars I know of are semi-passive: You can pick the lockk but than the core will get stuck at 8 o'clock and you will have to "pick" the sidebar. Newer DPIs btw. don't have pins anymore - they use sliders with false gates just like the Evva Dual and they are just plain evil. Never managed to pick mine, I always get stuck in the false gates. ^^
    Ad Wilka: Be careful not to overset the pins - Wilka uses serrated pins as drives
    Ad BKS: Thehehehehe.. I've got the exact same lock and I did manage to pick it exactly once. and it was sheer luck. D:
    And when you have a look at the bittings you might come to the conclusion that Adrian hates you :P (Nah, he is a good guy ^^)
    Thanks for showing us your naughty bucket - always fees good to see that you are not the only one struggling with certain locks (or just not being able to pick some "simple-looking" locks)
