    A few clarifications/observations about Mongo:
    * Your back foot tends to be planted more ahead of the back truck than over it, with your body leaning forward so your center of balance is over the midpoint of the board, which grants you lots of stability and subtle turning control when pushing.
    * Unless you have poor balance and/or really soft bushings or loose trucks, when you hit a crack or debris, it's definitely easier to bounce over it safely while still maintaining control and desired direction.
    * Mongo only looks awkward when someone awkward does it. Experienced, good riders will look just as fluid and graceful as someone pushing "regular." It only looks weird when someone not used to it tries it for the first time, like writing with your "wrong" hand.
    * It's definitely helpful to learn both Mongo and "regular" so you can alternate your pushing leg on long-distance rides without having to switch from your natural stance. When you're going miles at a time, you want to give each leg an equal workout.
    * Back in the day, there wasn't any term for or care about Mongo pushing. Ditto other things that some of today's kids mock, like mall grabs. We skated how we wanted and carried boards how we wanted. I feel really bad for new skaters being told these things are "wrong." What a load of ignorant garbage. Ignore the haters and gatekeepers--do what's fun and safe :)

Pushing mongo for 40 years, have try to change several time..but couldn’t. When i was young to set a trick on street board was less easy: less faster in fact, and now with longboard and surfskate it’s really ok. One thing important and never said : a real mongo doesn’t put his feet right above the back truck like shown in video where non mongo try push mongo and make it look stupid, but a bit forward...it is fully well balanced, body is centered on deck and then you put the front foot properly and re-set the back one, and when it is mastered it doesn’t look bad at all...

The best balanced explanation and discussion about mongo pushing on UA-cam. When pushing a very loose and turny front truck like on surfskates, pushing mongo makes it more stable to get going.

I ride mongo, and if you have a board with wheels bigger than 60mm youll roll over pretty much anything or atleast kick it out of the way.
Having weight on the front trucks often makes rocks and sticks slide with me, if my weight is on the back of the board i roll right over em.

  • @jamespostle6894

i kinda invented my own style of pushing. I technically push mongo but when my front foot comes off the board i slide my back foot foreword to the middle of the board so it's more stable when i push. Then when i put my front foot back on I move my rear foot to the back of the board again. seems to work pretty well for me most of the time.

Been pushing mongo since I was in middle school and I never knew that it was considered "bad" until years in causal longboarding. Tried to re-learn and it was incredibly hard and I gave up because its not worth relearning how to ride especially when you can ride better than the people who criticize you. Felt harder, less fun, and less rewarding than learning dance tricks so there really wasn't a point in bothering.

I don’t push mongo, but when it comes to downhill, pushing mongo actually does allow you to get more momentum and speed early on because your weight is further back on the board, and therefore further up the hill, so the weight starts from a higher point. You essentially have more potential energy at the start of the race. What happens next is that once you’re done pushing, you shift the weight that you previously had in the back to the front of the board, artificially moving the weight you previously had higher up the hill to lower down the hill. This gives you a burst of speed that is inaccessible to people who push regularly. A good way to see how this burst of speed works is by standing on the back end of your board with your back (and the board) pressed against a wall. If you suddenly shift more of your weight to the front of the board, the board will move forward despite the fact that you didn’t touch the ground. In downhill longboarding, the “wall” is the slope of the hill, and will, like the wall, prevent the board from shifting backward when you shift your weight forward. This is how the extra momentum from mongo pushing works.

  • @228anonymous

It wasn’t mentioned in the video, but I think mongo has its place in dancing too. I’ll just throw in some thoughts from the dance pov:
For dancing, at least being comfortable pushing mongo is pretty useful. Dance in general requires you to be flexible and comfortable riding the board in basically anyway possible, especially awkward and non-optimal positions (riding crosslegged backwards with your feet parallel to the board isn’t exactly the most stable of positions to be in lol), and this also applies to how you push.
As for taking longer time to set up tricks, it honestly doesn’t matter in dance. The board is like 4 feet long, it’s gonna take a while to set up tricks anyway, and you’re even probably gonna throw in a fancy transition to make that setup look cool.
Even stylistically, dancing throws the whole “mongo looks stupid” thing out the window. You can do a fancy mongo push to transition into other tricks/steps.
All this being said, I wouldn’t advocate for pushing mongo for beginner riders. I’m more of the opinion that mongo is a useful tool for when you go deeper into certain disciplines, especially LDP (skogging actually feels so nice when you’re tired). But it is just a tool and shouldn’t be the basis for how you skate. When you’re just learning and cruising, mongo is more harm than good because you unconsciously start developing a habit of steering from the back and leaning backward, which is unstable and even dangerous. Learn to skate properly first, then pick up mongo later when you know what you’re doing and why you’re doing it.

  • @Aysun_Wolf

Having been skating on and off since I first got on a board in ’79, and only taught myself to push regular over the last 5 years, I can say this, in my opinion and my experience, the only one of your disadvantages that could be considered correct is that of ‘steeze’. The board certainly does clear debris better than in regular, it’s easier to make quick direction changes and takes no longer to setup for a trick. However, all these views are completely subjective. If your natural push is regular, Mongo is going to feel weird and limiting, however, if you naturally push Mongo, he same will apply if you start pushing regular. The reason being that you’re fighting your body/mind’s natural desire. It’s like saying a rear wheel drive car sucks and a front wheel drive is the only way forward. Each has its merits, but, as I said, it is subjective to the individual ✌🏼

for a culture that is about freedom, creativity and expression skaters sure have a bunch of rules. no mongo. no mall grab etc.
i pushed mongo in high school. just felt natural to me. it wasn't until much later that i learned to push the 'proper' way. im not any good i definitely dont need to set up tricks etc, but just thought i should learn the proper way. it definitely makes sense and all the advantages are true. but at the end of the day to recreational skaters it really doesnt matter.
the bonus i have now is that even though i can't do a single switch trick, my switch push game is impeccable. and general switch stance riding around is fine. its great for pushing for a while to just be able to push with either foot no matter the stance.

i honestly have been so discouraged because i skate like this. to me it doesnt take longer to set up tricks cause i always have to adjust where my front foot is depending on the trick so why not push with it. the only disadvantage ive had was push power and not getting enough speed. i just cant skate goofy or normal without it throwing off my balance so bad to the point i feel like ive never skated a day in my life. to me steering is easier pushing from the back. ive been trying to correct it my stance i just havent had any luck with it. it makes me not want to skate

  • @Crash_Knight

There's no denying science and physics. Pushing mongo is objectively more difficult and less stable for certain things. But at the end of the day, if you're safe and having fun, push with your goddamn hands for all I care lmfao.
The only times its useful are in LDP and Freestyle Dance.
For LDP, being able to push mongo helps conserve stamina by using both legs. In freestyle dance, you can push mongo to mix things up and have a cool style.
In the case of downhill, both feet are on the board, so its doesn't affect you. However, if you're racing, you need to push to your top speed off the starting line, and you can push harder and faster when you push normally. Mongo will lose you races in this regard.
Freeride? Doesn't matter. Its all about style when you're already going fast. You won't be pushing at all when freeriding.

Just like all things skating, pushing Mongo is an issue that needs to be addressed! This ain't no witch-hunt.
When pushing uphill for a very long time, I'd prefer pushing switch
    -Not Mongo.
Positioning when hopping a crack takes 65% longer pushing Mongo.

Standing on your back foot makes it more or less impossible to foot brake by dragging your other foot into the ground because then your foot will go into your back wheels. Standing on your front foot while doing this, you can get support from the board on the side of your breaking foot.

Something about the unnaturalness of the stance, but the skill at which good mongo riders do it, just looks really stylish to me. Like, "Dude, I'm such a skilled skater I can steer from the backseat." LOL It's pretty slick to me when I see a really good mongo rider, especially if they're a street skater. I skated mongo for my first couple of years of skating - not realising it wasn't standard. It most definitely suffered in its ability to let me setup for tricks. We all know that one spot you literally have one push, maybe 3 feet and immediately have to do the kick flip off a ledge. Not fun.
You are somewhat wrong on the hitting debris thing. Yes, it can alter direction if you hit something large enough, but at that point you'd already have gotten kinked pushing front truck. On small enough debris it never really mattered. In the end though, skating long distances it was EXTREMELY annoying having to push mongo, hop on and roll for a bit then TURN back into mongo position to begin pushing. Also, you know that thing you do where you put your hand on your knee to brace when you lean forward for a long push? Can't do that mongo because you are essentially horizontal - this little bracing saves a ton of energy. Moving to the more orthodox position is just better.
Note: I do skate mongo when doing nollie tricks because I can put my front foot right on the nose without adjusting.

  • @nikobuerk346
    @nikobuerk346 2 роки тому +5

It's a balance thing. Especially with beginners. Those who begin skateboarding with a mongo push style can't seem to balance on the board and and are hesitant pick up any real speed because of it. Not to mention it's harder to generate said speed. also you mentioned debris pushing the board in weird ways, but i think its more important to mention that sometimes you have to turn with only one foot on the board. The board reacts differently depending on where that one foot is placed, and most strangely when the one foot is far at the back. These turns can easily knock you off balance, and are pretty much impossible pushing mongo (especially as a beginner) because they feel long and sweeping with less control. I'm not anti mongo, but beginners ought to start with a standard push style (reg. or goofy) as it will benefit them the most. Learning only mongo is a huge disadvantage.

I’m overweight AF and I skated my whole life until I started doing drugs, stopped skating and exercising and became a monster fatass. So now I’m working my ass off to get back in shape so I can skate with my kids (who are getting all into skating Fyeah!) without looking and feeling ridiculous. Falling at 300 #s is no joke either! So I have been skating my but off, and I am working on getting out of mongo because I have noticed that with certain types of skating it’s a lot easier to lose my balance with the back foot on the board. With the front foot I can actually balance my weight over it and push, where as with the back foot it’s a lot harder to have that total stability. I do agree with another poster about pushing with the back foot over rough terrain being better, but that’s about it. I mainly want to learn to push regular for when I’m riding smaller boards and doing surf skate stuff, when I’m cruising my long board for distance or land paddling it doesn’t matter. I can’t see learning to push both ways being a bad thing and so I’m gonna really work on this.
Thank you for your videos, they’re badass! One of these days I’m gonna have to send a $$thank you when I’m not so poor.

I just started skating this week and pushing mongo was by far the most comfortable and natural way for me. So when I heard I was doing it wrong I got a little discouraged but this is nice to see

also pushing mongo makes sense from a setup perspective for fakie and nollie tricks. i also like some of the pros that still push mongo in switch. its an easy way in a line when you're not familiar with the skater to know they're in switch! like tiago lemos!

I push mongo a LOT for a few reasons. I have had two knee surgeries and pushing “properly” can really hurt on a bad day. The other time I push mongo is when I surfskate. I surfskate a Swelltech and they’re notorious for being deadly when your weight is up front 😂 It sucks when dudes judge my riding based solely off if I’m pushing mongo that day.

I feel like mongo it's safer if you hit debris. While pushing regular your weight is on your front foot so if you get stucked you just fall over. However if you push mongo, you can often land on your pushing leg as your weight is on your back foot.

Ain't nothing wrong about it, I used to push mongo while doing fakie tricks since I lost my balance whenever I tried to push with my left foot (I'm regular) then I started experimenting with basic switch tricks Ollies, shuvits etc and learned how to push with my left foot, it was definitely a game changer ain't nothing wrong about mongo push but if you wanna up your skate game just learn how to push with both.

  • @boycemallas8190

The argument about "foot setup" is strange because you going to adjust both feet for the trick. When pushing standard it's not like your front foot is already planted and ready for the trick. You make adjusts as your center yourself on the board. So I don't think it makes any difference when it comes to foot placement.

  • @Galagamaster1

If you can push mongo, you can easily learn to integrate one foot manuals into your style and competition across fun boxes and other features. I see the exact opposite all the time. People pushing regular into one foot nose manuals.

I don't get it.. I skate all my life like MONGO, but if you skate, you skate regular right? And if you skate mongo you can quickly do a frontside pop-shovit as well. So I don't get the "problem" some people make (at skateparks) about mongo pushers. I love it, and I also can push goofy, but mongo feels sooo good haha 🙃You also can fall faster if your board is stuck at goofy, and with mongo your board pops up and you can run next to it! You also can steer better with your backfoot when pushing.

And in all reality guys, if somebody's bustin your balls about the way you choose to skate, fuck em!! Your choice is your choice and its what defines you as you! If they're givin ya grief at the park, roll on, ignore their opinions. Youre comfortable with it, dont change it! Their opinion is their opinion, it dont make em the shot callers of the skate world, settin the rules of whats cool and responsible for greenlighting the skate etiquette used across the globe. Just remember one simple fact, life is short, it really is and those assholes who give ya shit about your style, theyre gonna be around for such a short period of your overall time on ths rock so, unless youre sponsored and have a contract that pays you enough to buy your house, a car, etc. ignore the jackoffs throwin shade at you from the sidelines, theyll fade faster than you can believe. Skate like no one's watching and care even less. Dig what youre doing and stay within your own flow. Again, unless youre sponsored! Them guys hold the keys. Ask Tony Hawk, the first one to realize skating as a business and it turned him into a corporate owned "yes"man. A very rich yes man!😅😅😅

This claim that your body is centered over the board is…absurd. Please direct me to a video of pushing mongo with centered momentum.
Aside, it’s not that it’s wrong. It’s that it generally looks silly. Go ahead and do it. Have fun. Definitely. But for discussion sake, it generally looks less attractive. Skateboarding is often a form of art that is viewed. and when you watch a beautiful line with mongo pushing, it generally looks less graceful. Maybe there are minor exceptions, but they are surely exceptions. Again, there’s nothing “wrong” with way it.

there are advantages to mongo. A lot of tricks are easier imo like casper flips. Might take longer to learn to drop in but saying mongo is bad is like saying power hound snow boarders are bad 😂 its literallt just the difference between heavy front or heavy back foot. Ppl who think everyone should skate the same have no place in the park. Ie mind your business and allow people to be different than you
