Omg I was just about to post the same thing, I think those might be flowers! Perhaps hibiscus? I mean, in one of the games, you do see the Mayor retire and go on vacation at the tropical island.
@AzureAkita Nah man, fans headcanoned the villager as evil long before they were put in smash. it's probably the fan persona that shaped the smash intro tbh
val val Yep, in the late 90s. Fun fact: antenna accessories were all the rage then. A good example of life imitating art here would is in the Digimon movie (the second in Japan, or the second act of the dub film). There's a great scene where a virus sets off cell phone communications, and literally everyone in the metropolitan areas reaches for their pockets. It seemed so, well, foreign back then.
I... don't get it? I'm in Europe and i've had a cell phone ever since 1998, wasn't expensive at all. The game is 2001. By 2000, every single high school student had a cell phone on them, we wrote a lot of SMS, usually wihout T9 yet - not sure whether that was an improvement at all.
Siana Gearz Even in the mid 2000s, -some- many parents insisted on using Walkie-Talkies or kid-safe phones like the Firefly. In 1999, kids were more likely (and lucky) to get a pager or a beeper than a proper cell. Regardless of you having a phone, you know they weren't ubiqutous as they are today.Might be hard to remember, but in the 90s it was still off to hear phone conversations when out in public.
not entirely sure about this, but pagers have never caught on in Europe (at least not the netherlands as far as i know, i've never seen one in real life to this date! but my mom was the first in the house to get a mobile phone in the late 90's and as Siana gearz says: everyone wanted one around that time. it's totally correct for where i grew up. literally in the center on the Netherlands)
9:50 in a LOT of Nintendo games, textures are mirrored across models. This has actually given a lot of people making texture packs some issues since they're limited to how detailed they can make it. It's a smart move by Nintendo with the limitations of their consoles, though. Just have one texture that can be flipped over to the opposite side!
6:01 Shesez: "What's on the calendar? Again, I have no idea..." Me: Flowers, maybe? 6:13 Shesez: "... *the inside of a human body?* " Me: .....well ok, i guess
Awesome episode with cool secrets! After working on this episode, it's enticed me to put Animal Crossing on my backlog. Thanks again for the shout out!
I noticed that sneaky Pocahontas reference at 6:52 "let's look once more just around the river bend." 👍🏻. Looks like we got a fellow Disney fan. Over the web high five to you my friend! 🙋🏻
Aurum brought me to this series and IM SO GLAD HE DID. i was always fascinated with what was outside the boundaries. This has now become my new fav series lol
Thanks dude! Yeah i dont know what the secret is to 1 mill subs (im sure if there is a secret, its probably dishonest and i wouldnt do it anyway.). But atleast i got awesome folks like yourself watching it.
I find it really cool that Rover even flips the phone closed before putting it away, an unnecessary detail when considering you'd never see that side of the animation. Due to the low resolution of the N64 and the television it needs to be played on, I always thought he was just grabbing a phone that was on the wall.
Shesez I did it was awesome! I've mostly played wild world and new leaf but they are similar. I never really though about the background that much before!
Wow, Aurum sent me here (through one of his videos) and I'm loving boundary break! For a while now, I've been trying glitches that get you out of the map in games just to see what lies outside, but this takes that to a whole new level! I'm going to watch other Boundary Breaks tomorrow, but for now know that this is awesome! ^-^
I can explain what happened with the triangular texture piece on the roof around 9:50. Texture changes are expensive, so you want to draw as much with a single texture as possible. Furthermore they introduce a seam where the same vertex would need to be stored multiple times. A seam is present if either the vertices share coordinates in space but don't share the texture coordinates, or if they must be drawn as a separate mesh because they carry a different texture. So what they did, they had ONE texture for the whole roof including the protruding section. This texture is mirror mapped on both sides of the roof, so top vertices share the same texture coordinate and no seam needs to be made, then the protruding section gets the face part of the texture with the window drawn on it, while hiding the unsightly window on the roof plane. The sides of the protruding section also carry the same texture, stretched - it's the triangular sections above the window part. There is simply no clean texture for this blue roof otherwise. An extension of this technique to the extreme is atlasing, can be seen in that one Pokemon game you showed, where they'd just merge all the textures they needed for a room into one, put it onto the whole room, and the proceed making seams and shifting around texture coordinates until the whole visible part of the room was textured correctly. The most universal answer to "I don't understand why they did it? They didn't have to" is because of habits, one gets to develop particular sets of habits when working under particular constraints. Indeed, all buildings should go a bit into the ground to avoid aliasing, they still do in most games, and you can just as well terminate them with one vertex underneath instead of a whole polygon, because why not if the texture allows. On the vases, they used the termination vertex also for the bottom part of the shape.
I can provide another explanation for the cones below buildings. This could have been done to save polygons. It takes more triangles to make a rectangular prism than it does to make a triangular prism.
9:48 I know, I'm years late, but that tile appears that way on the roof because it just shares the same texture information as the other part of the roof. It's not that they went out of their way to do that - it's actually the opposite - They didn't bother to make a new texture for that part of the roof at all
I'm thinking the 16 in CC16 could stand for "Animal Forest" (the Japanese name of the original Animal Crossing), as its initials A and F are letters 1 and 6. Not too sure about what the CC is, but Choo-Choo sounds nice.
So couple things: I really like this series, but some of your terminology is way off. You said the devs "re-rendered" the bus in a lower poly/lower detail, while in a round about way this is true, since the bus is "re-rendered" every frame, it doesn't make sense. They remade it or remodelled it. Rendering is the process that the game goes through every frame to get the image to display on screen. (to rend literally means to tear. ie: to render a 3d model is to tear away the 3rd dimension to turn it into a 2d image) Anyways, keep up the good work, exploring the outside of maps like this was one of the biggest things that got me into game development (PS: try the halo series, there are tons of amazing and cool hidden areas and stuff, and a lot can actually be accessed without hacks at all :P at least for the first 3 games)
I always appreciate comments like this. Really helps to add more legitimacy to the series so thank you! Halo is very much on my mind. I need to research whether i can do it viably first but if it turns out to be no issue then i'll start adding it to the polls
Cool! Btw, cannot stress how much I am loving this series! And I had another minor thing, but I left it out cause I didn't want to sound too negative and I was late to work, and it wasn't really anything you said that was wrong, just an explanation for why they had the triangle piece of the window on the back of the roof at 9:45. I just started typing it out but it wound up getting real long and I didn't know how much you already knew about texturing and UVing so I didn't want to patronize :P. If you do want to hear an explaination lemme know and I'll finish typing it. EDIT; accidentally commented this somewhere else. deleted that and reposted it here :)
7:55 might be the case, makes sense (i used similar technique though i didn't go into cones, i just retained the originall shape), although i suspect it also might just be an artifact of the vertex shader which makes the world look round/cylindrical.
I hate to say it, but the letters on the train number thing actually stands for the railway the engine works on. For example, the Flying Scotsman's number data is LNER4472 because the number it was given was 4472 and it worked (because it now is under the jurisdiction of the national railway museum) on the LNER. LNER stands for London North Eastern Railway, for anybody wondering.
2:40 & 9:46 are most likely because of UV mapping of the model. Usually a texture contains all graphics for a single model. UV map tells the engine or 3d software how to place the texture on the 3d model. Since player is never supposed to see those parts the artist didn't bother to UV map the part properly.
Hey! I just discovered your channel thanks to a plug in Aurum's latest video. Just wanted to say that I'm loving this video series. It's exactly the kind of thing I've been interested in since I was a kid. Being able to see hidden things in games is always so intriguing! Keep up the great work! (Also, any plans on covering Splatoon? There are so many things to get a good look at!)
Thanks for checking me out man! And heck yeah, I'd love to do splatoon. I'm currently looking into enlisting modders to develop a methods in which to do Wii U games. And splatoon is pretty high on that Wii U backlog!
CC16 sounds like City 17. That game starts out like HL2 does, you arriving to a new city in a train. Rover is blue, the citizens in HL2 wear blue. HL3 is a crossover with AC confirmed.
Normally I wouldn't watch videos like this because when I watch videos where you do a breakdown of out of range stuff or glitches, I feel like it breaks the game in my opinion knowing that some of the stuff is just an allusion to make it look like something else from the games perspective. I like the way this was showed off because it pretty much shows how they made the game...
Sharkzillah Tornado i could’ve swore it was for Sonic Adventure DX but at the same time as a girl i never cared to get character upgrades in Sonic Adventure 2 so maybe they’re the same😂
A cone (or rather upside down pyramid) takes 4 triangles to render. If they made the sides squares, each square would need 2 triangles, requiring 8 in total. Or even 10 If they'd want to render a bottom side
6:55 it still ends in a triangle except two of its sides are in the river so the end you see is just the one (third) side of it. because until some new radical breakthrough in graphics happens, all of it is always just triangles.
06:08 -- The calendar : that's a picture of a green background and red hibiscus flowers, I'm pretty sure? Funny, almost a hint to New Leaf given it was next to Tortimer. Very tropical.
alright i finished watching all of the videos and i can definitely see there's been a big improvement in quality over the course of the series. i look forward to future episodes!
Ah, I don't even need any magic camera assistance to do that. I do that all the time without her noticing. But he can't do 3DS so Isabelle doesn't exist.
In CF I know the bus supposedly goes through the tunnel/gate but in my village there wouldn't be enough room to turn around so it seems the bus would drive into the river. Seeing 4:33 it probably drives over it out of view.
The people who came up with that weird theory that Undertale takes place in the Animal Crossing world would love 5:56 because they'd think it means the mayor is Gerson & therefore the mayor in Deltarune is Gerson's daughter.
a big part of why things are so culled and optimized in the gamecube game is almost all of the models and textures are directly taken from the N64 game.
Hey folks! To see the source of the Gif from Kotaku. Its in this newer episode for Wild world and New Leaf ua-cam.com/video/YjtfQoyrRRs/v-deo.html

Yeah, the cone thing is a shortcut so the 3D modelers wouldn't have to make the bottom of structures curved to match to the shape of the world.

alright i finished watching all of the videos and i can definitely see there's been a big improvement in quality over the course of the series. i look forward to future episodes!
wow thanks for going through all of them!
Great video! This entire series is great!
Thanks a lot man!
"meanwhile, back at the gamecube version of animal crossing, pure chaos ensues!"
sounds in-character for the first game.
Due to your comment about the "Great Crossing Wars" is to why I made my island resort in NH based on a retired battlefield... xD
0/10 didn't look up Isabelle's skirt
Fartface Shitlord XD
Ah, I don't even need any magic camera assistance to do that. I do that all the time without her noticing.
But he can't do 3DS so Isabelle doesn't exist.

@SuperScope34 Hey, don't kinkshame, brother.
I'd been wondering about who did your elaborate intros, so I'm glad you've told us. :)
In CF I know the bus supposedly goes through the tunnel/gate but in my village there wouldn't be enough room to turn around so it seems the bus would drive into the river. Seeing 4:33 it probably drives over it out of view.
Ahhhhh this bring me back... Shesez was still a cute child, experimenting with his hacks... Oh those were the days...
10:42 Dang! I cranked my screen to full brightness and I couldn't see the brown bar.
oh yeah i cant see it either
hurts my eyes alot though...
I find it so funny when in Wild world Cap'n's lil bobbly boat falls off the dash and Cap'n panics
The people who came up with that weird theory that Undertale takes place in the Animal Crossing world would love 5:56 because they'd think it means the mayor is Gerson & therefore the mayor in Deltarune is Gerson's daughter.
I love this series so nice to watch
a big part of why things are so culled and optimized in the gamecube game is almost all of the models and textures are directly taken from the N64 game.
There should be a 360 episode. It would with this series just so good
I've had _Animal Crossing_ for the GameCube for nearly 13 years, and all this time I thought Rover was calling Tom Nook on a wall phone.
