When Rapunzel was reunited with her parents after being locked away in a tower for eighteen years, it was a time for celebration as both King Frederic and Queen Arianna were overjoyed to have their daughter back within their castle. Unfortunately though fear would cut the joy of this reunion short. With dread of losing his daughter again overcoming Frederic, he was driven to attempt to have Rapunzel under his full control, leading to him pushing her away until they reached a point where his protective behavior could have forced her away forever.

Yes, effectively, She's flexibe, loves her daughter. I get in context: They should have been scared when their daughter left to follow the black rocks, without a doubt, super happy when Rapunzel and the rest go back to Corona.
He made a big mistake. Rapunzel spent 18 years of her life getting gaslit and manipulated and having her whole world view twisted by somebody she loved and trusted and, like anybody in that situation it likely felt as though it were happening all over again. The result was hurting her.
The king experienced a trauma but so did she and he had no consideration for that.

I can understand both sides. But yeah, he needs to take a few seats back. Especially since it led to him *endangering* the kingdom.
The truth of it is the similarities are there but Gothel was doing it for selfish reasons where Rapunzel's father was doing it because he genuinely loved her. However though that does set him apart from Gothel he should have realized that if you truly love something you have to let it go free sometimes.
He's a good dad.❤ I think if he had a long moment to explain everything and if Rapunzel took a moment to listen to those around her that love her, then maybe she wouldn't be endangering herself.
Also, I never knew her to be so fiery. I though she was always gentle and understanding, until she finds out what Gothal did.
I guess she's just paranoid. I don't know what she thinks she knows honestly, b'coz Frederick is a wise king, Gothal is just a woman who could care less.😕 I personally would see the clear difference and know what's right,😊 but that's just me.
He's still toxic and harmful as well even if he himself is traumatized. Obsessive behaviour in parents and over protectiveness is bad for a child. Also she is fiery because she does not like anything threatening her freedom and those she cares about.
@marshmallowvampire8503 It's different for Rapunzel because she was an abuse victim from her perspective, her father was doing thr same thing and keeping her trapped like Gothel did. Except King Frederick did it because of his own trauma and he was thinking of her safety.

When it comes to his actions it’s not the intentions that matters but the impact. Yes, unlike Gothel, he’s doing it out of love not selfishness but he’s still putting his needs over his daughter’s. He lets his fear cloud his judgment and lets his worry make Rapunzel’s life miserable. By locking her away he has the same impact on her that Gothel did. Even though he came from a place of love and protectiveness it still doesn’t make him right. He had no right to lock his daughter away and should have told her the truth from the start. After all his daughter is 19, she’s legally an adult. She has the right to make her own decisions.
Rapunzel's father just looked so sensitive and sweet in the movie, this video gives him a whole different side! (Obviously I haven't seen the series) haha

I think Frederic's intentions are more important. The results ended up similar to Mother Gothel's because he didn't act on his intentions correctly, and he didn't communicate well enough with Rapunzel. A lot of people make mistakes because they don't think enough, clouded by emotion.
Dame Gothel meant godmother and she was a fairy in early versions of the fairytale, so she was Rapunzel’s fairy godmother (or perhaps, HAIRY godmother).

Did Rapunzel ever ask who her “father” was, when she was living with Gothel? And if so, what did Gothel tell her about “him?”
Probably that he 'died' before Rapunzel was born or that he abandoned her while pregnant, and then say it's 'too difficult to talk about'. Either one of those stories would work, considering how much of a sociopathic narcissist Gothel was! She knew how to bend Rapunzel to her will through fear until Rapunzel actually found out the truth.
Did she even know that men are required to have children? It's likely she didn't know of sex during her imprisonment, thus never knowing what a father truly was.

She may well have told her some not-child-friendly horror story regarding her conception to help convince her that the outside world was evil and dangerous
Regarding the question of her father: Intent does not equal impact. And it is the impact that needs to be considered and valued when deciding how to act.
The King sending his own daughter into a cruel prison is the worst thing Frederic has ever done. 😡 I thought he was such a nice guy, but I was wrong.
I can understand King Frederic being overprotective, but he should have been more honest with her about the crystals. At least he realized the error of his ways in time to help save his wife. And, of course, letting Rapunzel go was the hardest decision he could ever make.
I like how Rapunzel is an ADULT already. So all of her decision making, adventures and growth is more realistic as she is truly able to make her own decisions as an adult.

It's amazing how these animated series and movies teach life lessons that become invaluable over time. It took King Fredric to nearly lose his daughter a second time, to finally see the error of his ways. Thanks for the explanation on that, Isaac.

Hey Watso, I just watched the Big hero 6 the series and I want you to do a theory on Diane, Liv Amaras clone.
I think King Frederick was doing what any father would do if they lose their long lost daughter so it was important for him to keep Rapunzel from danger or getting too far from home but he didn't need to replicate what Gothel did to keep her away. By doing this he made Rapunzel think that she was imprisoned from her dreams or destiny she wanted to be able to explore more because she hasn't been out that much before but he kept her away from her destiny, journey and freedom.

Especially when you’re tightening your grip and confining your child whose life has ALREADY BEEN CONFINEMENT. Even keeping secrets about what put her in that danger in the first place. It's been a while since I've watched that episode, but I seem to remember that the guards were already there when Rapunzel and her friend arrived there. So I highly doubt that the guards could have told the King about Rapunzel going to Old Corona, gotten costumes and men and gotten to Old Corona in such a short time. And also, Varian mentioned the guards in his message. No, the guards were already there, and probably have been for a while. Maybe they were just trying to steal the graphtyc, but considering how little the King cares about his subjects and morales (when it comes to his family) he possibly also ordered them to make sure that Varian won't be able to reach out to Rapunzel again. Thus completing Varian's isolation from the kingdom (and being hunted or at least imprisoned by masked men probably didn't help with his fragile mental and emotional state either).
Can you do a video about Audrey's full story? Because I want to know if Audrey was betrothed to Ben since they were kids, and that betrothal was broken by Ben when fell in love and began dating Mal after Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos came to Auradon from the Isle of the Lost!

King Randor in He-Man 2021 series can relate to Frederick. Like Rapunzel, Adam was stolen, with no indication that he was alive, scarring Randor for life. Having become not very popular in Eternia. I can imagine Randor would have put the same restrictions Frederick put on Rapunzel on Adam if he went home with him in Calm Before the Storm. Adam was still adjusting to learning that he is a prince. Having to dress and act a particular way "as a proper prince" and all that. Also keep Adam safe and ensure he'd never lose him again. Definitely Randor would find it hard to separate the king from the man and father.
I can't say I agree with this characterization of the king because it more or less assumes that he was making the wrong decisions, while Rapunzel was always in the right. Aside from the context of a cartoon or anime, where the younger generations' feelings trump everything else, most of his choices would be correct. His daughter was spirited away once, in spite of being safe inside the castle, so he builds up protective walls and secures the kingdom. Now that she's returned, he has his guards double-down on their watch, which they're all too happy to do for the young princess. He knows she'll be a queen someday, so he instructs her, has her observe him in the court, and gives her the chance to make some decisions while he's away (pretty trusting with how little she'd know by then and the possible consequences that could have). She might feel stifled in the castle, in part because she's having to learn all this etiquette and proper, dignified behavior fitting of the royal family, but her drive to go exploring the world isn't realistic. As a princess, her duty is to the kingdom, not to satisfy whatever fanciful whims she has as a teenager. Besides, they've been separated for her entire life. However, because they won't let her do whatever she pleases, while all her needs and wants are tended to, she's surrounded by people who genuinely care about her, and she's reunited with her family, she's just as imprisoned as she was by Mother Gothel? She now has an entire kingdom to explore, so many people to interact with, but the young princess is still confined (one reason I'm so sick and tired of the classic fairy-tale princess trope). Gother's motivations were always selfish, and Rapunzel was gas-lighted and suppressed heavily. In the kingdom, it's clear her parents love her, and that's the reason driving their actions. They have so much catching up to do, and she already wants to bail on them? How selfish of the king.
He only starts limiting her freedoms as a result of impending dangers and her inclination of seeking trouble out. It wouldn't make for a very interesting show if she sat back and played it safe, but is he wrong to be concerned about her welfare when people are attacking her and she's not playing it safe? I don't really get how having guards follow her closely is such a bad thing either. They're literally there to risk their lives for hers. The horrors of having armed security. If she ever got seriously hurt, with things not working out in one of those escapades she has, would he still be wrong if he partitioned her off with constant surveillance by guards? The fact that magic is at work, which nobody quite understands, only exacerbates his concerns. I'd say his biggest misstep was in not being forthright with her about what was going on. Then again, no matter what he did, she seemed driven to seek answers out, so she only would have tried going to the crystals if he told her about them (probably why he didn't). It ultimately worked out (has nothing to do with cartoon logic or anything), but nobody could have foreseen or known it would have. The cost of saving her with the flower for X years may have been her life now (tends to be how fairy-tale magic works), and having only recently reunited with her, would have been an unbearable thought to him. Seeing as how Rapunzel never had much control or experimentation with her magic, it's not like she had that ace in the hole to draw upon or to reassure her father, "Don't worry dad. I learned a lot about my powers in the tower. I think... I know I can do this." She just winged it!

I think it's always about intentions. Still the road to hell is paved with good ones so even if you have the best intentions you also need to think about your actions. King Frederick was definitely wrong but I don't think he's a bad person. I can understand his fear.
It's basically the same thing as when I tame like ten wolves in Minecraft and then proceed to keep them in one spot for the entire time I play in the world and never let them come adventure with me because I'm scared they'll die

Honestly, I think we all should try and understand king Frederick a bit more. You did great explanation of his behavior in your video but I only see comments stating how ironic his behavior towards Rapunzel is.
He was so scared to lose his loved ones to even go as far as unleashing the power of the sun and moon despite knowing the risks. And though his wife and daughter were saved because of it, he lost his little girl right after. The desperation he must have felt all those years of not knowing whether she was alright or not took over him. He didn’t want to lose the happiness of having her, his child, finally back. Which made him eventually neglect the free spirited desires of his daughter in hopes of her understanding the situation and being alright with it some day. Also, he wanted to make her learn and understand her duties of being princess and future queen.
Him being immensely overprotective was just a result of 18 years of suffering. And as a father of a girl, he already had protective features naturally.
I do agree that he made some terribly wrong decisions and that he wasn’t exactly open minded, but after all he was just desperately trying to protect what he loves and once lost.
Doesn’t excuse throwing Varian in adult jail.

I get wanting to protect your kid, especially after they were kidnapped for YEARS, but the more you implement strict rules and regulations (especially built on lies like with the black rocks) will only make them more likely to rebel and go against it. Also I’ve never seen the series, are Eugene and Rapunzel still married at this point?

Material consequence matters as much as, if not more than, motive. It's ridiculous, too-Rapunzel lived outside of his kingdom for most of her young life and she survived. She made her way back to her parents. The King should have trusted in that a little more. If I were her I'd find it a little insulting.
I watched a show on Discovery ID called Disappeared, it's a great watch if you're in the mood for crippling depression. Needless to say, I sympathize with the man.
