I haven't even fitted one pipe yet and as an aspiring welder this video is giving me knowledge I can build off of. Big thanks and greatly appreciated from SAN ANTONIO TEXAS 💯
Fitting 101: question everything, double check everything else - measure before the tack, measure again after the tack, then move on as necessary. Use warping to your advantage, especially on stainless.... A bad welder needs a good fit, a good welder deserves a good fit. If you fit for yourselves, or especially if you fit for someone else -- make it count, make it precise. 80% of any weld is preparation.
brilliant vid just the sort of vids we need. i vid of a branch fabrication and weld in stick would be amazing can't find one anywhere . keep up the good work
I hope you Tig weld it I love the finish you do when I align a flange I like to use those Allen headcounter sunk bolts they self align to centre of your hole. There always on hand I don't have to spend money buying or making pins
depends on job what they are asking for , you have blue prints on the field and in those prints it states an says what process, and how the pipe needs to be welded. this CAN be welded with 6010ROOT or even Mig root, it will all depend on what you test for on job and what the prints request for.
Here that's fairly common for Argon. At least for the gas supplier that I use which is Praxair. I don't think there really is an official color code except for oxygen which seems to always be painted green.
agreed and Acetylene for red, many of mixed gas are brown or even full argon can be green or brown. I have never heard of color coding cylinders . yah and 02 green mostly.
I always tack at 12 oclock to 6 then you can swing it left or right then tac at 3 or 9 .oclock. never would i go from 12 o clock to a side 3 or 9 oclock.
Bob Moffatt Thanks. I was just wondering as I had not tried that before. And yes, i have to feather the edges of those tacks a bit. It is usually ok with a 1/8 grinding wheel on a 5/32 or 3/16 gap and a knife edge on bevel. I don't like a landing but some people do. Either way works if you break down that edge. Unless you have a specific weld procedure to follow.
That sounds so weird not going to 6 o clock from starting at the 12 o clock. I dont see it staying after tacking at 10 or 2 from 12 o clock. never seen that craziness haha
Well you probably already know what I would do I would just run a hot pass with six O one one then cap it with 7018 then drink down a sixer n stand on my head
Orbital welders are a pain to set up and not as fast as manual when you consider the entire time to set up and weld. they also require clearance for the head to rotate which is not always available. They are fantastic for making the exact same weld time after time on medium to large piping. The repeat ability and control can't be matched by a human operator but a human is much more flexible to conditions.
Philadelphia Construction Engineering , I think you're wrong. The camera angle makes it look off. if you've ever looked at a spirit level at an angle you'd notice that it looks off when its in fact level. Plus theres usually a 1/16" to 1/8 +or- tolerance.
I took the camera angle under consideration... I have looked at levels for years! I can tell when looking at a level, on an angle if it is level or if the bubble is hitting the line. This is hitting the line 7:24

it is within toleration, in the bubble just off a C(_)Nt hair, you can also pull it plum with a tack on opposite side to have it perfect in the bubble.

planeswalking Indeed. I agree. Thanks for the feedback.
couldnt agree more brother👌
Sir you make it look so easy....
Can you do a vid about preheat/post heat and how to limit stresses in the metal from welding?
Years ago we use to fit pipe with a welder and a fitter .Now the welder fits and welds the pipe. I think they call it down sizing?
Very good
2 hole on a straight piece of pipe
Lol
Wow this is really helpful, any way you do bigger pipes and different welding techniques as they would use on the field as a pipeliner.
"... I don't have the luxury of someone holding my parts..." -- and you thought the internet wouldn't notice???
Have you seen CRG pipe fitting squares? They make fitting flanges and fittings pretty easy.
amazing video keeping my mind fresh and ready to work
Love the walk thru of thought process!
Aw was expecting to see the mig finish. Great vid anyway
Awesome video
Thanks Bob!! keep'em coming
brilliant vid just the sort of vids we need. i vid of a branch fabrication and weld in stick would be amazing can't find one anywhere . keep up the good work
Please can you put some more videos on fit ups like fitting 90 degree elbows and making rolling offsets

Could you do a video on repairing the welds?
Bob I was curious, have you ever done any video's on tubing fitting for say race cars roll cages? if not PLEASE DO!
Well done Bob!! Thank you very much for sharing!!!
Love the video's as always! kind regards from Belgium
Would like to see a close up of the V stand you used.
called pipe stands or pipe jacks. here ya go. www.bbpipetools.com/pipejack-stands/
Very nicely done my good man
What about your high low? I'm an apprentice pipefitter and I just want to learn
Well done.
Do you grind out the tacks as you approach or do you remove them?
Thank u for teaching me a lot.
Excellent video, sir. Thank you!
Helps alot thanks make more videos like this one
Awesome. Thank you for the videos. Constantly learning from you.
Why is the root done with tig? Is this a personal preference or required. Very interesting video.
Jeff Hulett it is called for a lot in pipe welding.
you didn't really answer the question..WHY ..is it called for?
CCs Welding Because it's a quality process for piping.
depends on job what they are asking for , you have blue prints on the field and in those prints it states an says what process, and how the pipe needs to be welded. this CAN be welded with 6010ROOT or even Mig root, it will all depend on what you test for on job and what the prints request for.
Better Penetration
영상 보면서 잘 배우고 있습니다. 구굴변역이 좀이상하지만 많은도움이 됩니다. ^^*
Nice Video Bob👍
What is the silver color at the end of the pipe?
Thanks a lot
hermann von deyn I bead blasted the fittings in the weld area.
Brown cylinders.? Acetylene? Or is it different colour coding in the US of A ?

DaddyFat Sacks In Europe the brown-red is acetlyene. Blue is oxygen and green is argon. Grey is co2 if im corrwect.
Did you just "meow" us bob? Twice? 10:26, 10:49.
Very good video thanks from Portugal...
Thanks Bob
Very nice.

Heavy Metalworks I leave bottom open when I do tig roots. Tacks at 12,10,2.
Bob Moffatt do you plan for any closure on that open side or does it not close up? I always run tacks at 12,3,6,9.
Sal Zamora Doesn't close much at all with tig. How can it collapse 3 tacks on top? How do you tie in to tacks at 3 and 9? Grind?
Bob Moffatt Thanks. I was just wondering as I had not tried that before. And yes, i have to feather the edges of those tacks a bit. Spacer works wonders lol
"I like big gaps ... I cannot lie" ....so many t-shirt slogans .....so little space ....bahaaahhhhhhaaaaa
Nice keep making videos
Can you Show us the Magswitch Products ? Thanks a lot
whats the sound when you start to weld? like a motor starting up and dying straight away
HF start on the GTAW process. Sounds funny on the audio.
You are the best.
10:25 ?!?!?! 10:47 ?!?!
Is it possible to show a repair on a missed edge?
Shaun Huson Will do.
Bob Moffatt, looking forward to it.
Why don't you have or make a flange square
I understand using tig for the root, as it's a stronger weld, but why mig. Fill and cap?? Why wouldn't you use 7010 electrode and arc welding?
I've never heard of a tig root / 7010 procedure. Tig root / 7018, yes.
sorry the 0 in 7010 was suppose be an 8 , was not paying attention
@@bobmoffatt4133 we use 6010 root 7018 filler and cap
@@andrewreese6342 We do too.
Do u guys think u can review the Vulcan welder?
We got some in and are in the process of going through them.
Sweet! Thanks!
When he starts to weld it sounds like his machine sneezes.
Do a branch!
You must have a lot of time to do this.my boss wants inches of weld per day!
Nice
10:25, 10:48, yeah?
Yeah!
Tacks should be at 12 3 6 and 9
so this is pipe fitting all about how the heck we've been bombarded wrong info...😂😂😂😂in our course.
Lol I wouldn't call line bubble square.
You don’t need to two hole that specific arrangement there. Nothing on the other end.
Класс!
retired 537 I was wondering what they would do w/o me.
I see you don't believe in using a keyhole and quartering the weld.
Bad Bob Moffett could weld a broke egg shell with fish line and a bic lighter. I wish he as my dad.
fitting pipe go to www.fittergrips.com
Well you probably already know what I would do I would just run a hot pass with six O one one then cap it with 7018 then drink down a sixer n stand on my head
bob look at www.fittergrips.com might have been easier
2 1/16 and 1 7/8 lol
Why would this job be done manually anymore, why not an orbital welder?
Beach&BoardFan I can't afford one.
Could always make one?!

7:21 you are not level - that is off... I do love your videos... not trying to upset you...
