I'm wondering if you have played, or plan on playing Resident Evil the Board Game? They both look great, but RE1 takes place in a mansion, and RE3 is in Raccoon City. I only have enough money for one, and am watching reviews over and over LOL😂. Do you have any preferences?
@@chrisw942 I haven’t played Resident Evil The Board Game yet but I do plan to buy it in the future. However, I was looking into it when it was on KS. They are both VERY similar, however, there are some drastic changes. Exploration is done with a set of cards in RE1. That is neat. RE3 is more like an open world, which is also neat. RE1 uses cards to determine what happens when you enter a room. RE3 uses a die to determine your fate. I prefer the die. The combat seems to remain unchanged for the most part and the same goes with the zombies. Both have terribly dark tiles that can make it very difficult to explore. Due to that issues, doors are INCREDIBLY difficult to see making it tough, at a glance, to see if they are opened or closed. That’s why I purchased terrain pieces for RE3 via Etsy but that was expensive. Still, it made a world of a difference. I think that either way you go, if you’re a fan of RE, you’re going to enjoy it. It’s very faithful to the source material. Since you’re a fan of RE1, it’s probably safe to say you’ll enjoy exploring the mansion more. Hope this helps at least a little.
@@SoloBoardGamingKnight Thank you for a well thought out response! I also prefer the die and chart over the cards--feels more spontaneous. RE1 and RE3 look fantastic to bring to the table. I've only played Resident Evil on Nintendo DS, but have enjoyed watching others play since it first came out--I couldn't use the controllers when stressed, so never played it😄-- I own the movies on DVD. I'm definitely a fan, and thank SFGames for creating these. Thank you!!
Aw man you don't have the Last Escape expansion. That adds ending cards, mercenary mode, more characters, the character reserve and narrative cards that implement the character reserve and mini-scenarios you can do in the middle of the main one. It makes the game feel more complete.
Someone had mentioned to me that it wasn’t necessary. Now I feel like I’m missing out. I’ll check the publishers website to see if it’s stil available. Thanks for letting me know!
@@SoloBoardGamingKnight Compared to City of Ruin it doesn't have very much and it's a pretty small box, but for campaign play specifically it's a nice addition.
Making short random scenarios for RE2 was a lot of fun. RE2 always had long empty corridors. I like how in RE3 there are now a lot more doors and rooms are close together so I almost never have to move for multiple turns where nothing happens.
RE3 is the only version I’ve played but I agree, there is always something going on and turns never feel wasted. I enjoy this game so much that I ended up purchasing terrain for it. It looks really neat when you create a map and add the terrain. This game is very faithful to the source material and I really appreciate what it does!
There is a game called Dark Darker Darkest which people say is what Resident Evil Board Game should've been. I bought it for around $20 on Amazon. I wonder how it plays compared to this? I enjoyed this video and your advice on making setup easier!
If you end up getting a similar experience as RE3 with Dark Darker Darkest for $20, it will be well worth it! I looked into it and I can see why people say it’s similar. From what I saw, it is very comparable. For that price, you can’t go wrong!
I bought the all in for this on Ebay and paid way too much for it (price was hiked up :/ ). Nice to see someone enjoying it/saying good things about it! I haven't started it yet (backlog of games). It sounds like you think this game is better to play true solo than two handed? Originally I was going to play this game two handed, as I was worried that playing it true solo would be "too simplistic"; even though I like the idea of playing true solo better. It sounds like playing it true solo was more fun for you? Thanks for the review! I'm obsessed with RE, this one was a must have for me.
That’s the bad thing about board games, if you don’t get it during KS, you may end up paying a bunch more later! The biggest difference between solo and 2-handed is, while playing 2-handed, you cover a larger portion of the map quicker. While playing solo, it’s similar to RE. You’re exploring the map on your own. When playing 2-handed, it feels like Resident Evil 0. When playing solo, it feels like Resident Evil 1, 2, 3 and Revelations 1 & 2. It’s fun both ways but I prefer solo because it captures the video game feel. You’re welcome for the review! Since you are obsessed with RE (I am, too!), you are in for a treat! It’s really fun and it captures the essence of RE. After you play it, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the game. Take care!
THANK YOU! Now I'll just use any tile. I couldn't tell which ones to choose, but this makes sense. I also said the same about the figures and papers. (still didn't start a game yet) Nice review. Can't wait to try it. (not halfway through the video yet) Edit: I had also the same thoughts on the tension with the door pic and thought about that same scene. I mean, that's expected. I first saw my first resident evil game was when I was around 8 years old only. It was 3, and it to this day probably my favourite game of all times. And this boardgame is more accurate than the remake! You have the grave digger and proper type 2 nemesis and clock tower. Nice review man.
Thanks! Since you’re a RE fan, you’re going to love it! A few weeks ago, I ordered the doors and terrain from Etsy. It’s not the official terrain but the original was sold out everywhere and I really wanted to play this game with the terrain. It was expensive but I really like the game that much. I can’t wait to replay it with the 3D terrain! I’m excited for you to play it! Let me know what you think once you do. Take care and have fun!
@@SoloBoardGamingKnight awh mine was already extra expensive because it shipped to KSA and I pretty much have no access to the extra pieces. I'll craft something I guess.
Out of the 200+ games in my collection, Resident Evil 3 is one of the worst to pack up. But definitely a competent, fun, thematic, wild ride of a game. I take a picture of the game state at the beginning of each new scenario. If I lose, I start the scenario over rather than the entire campaign. Don't tell anyone ;-)
Yeah, me too! It wouldn’t be fun to start all over again. Setup is heavy but I organized it in a way that’s not too bad. Everything is separated and easy to find. I just take out what I need. A few months ago, I bought a terrain pack from Etsy and it brought the game to an entirely new level. Seeing 3D doors, walls and stairs is a game changer. I try to make sure I have plenty of time to play when I want to play RE3. Also, your secret is safe with me
Unfortunately, I’ve only played RE3. If it’s anything like RE3, I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy either game you choose. Recently, I purchased 3D terrain for RE3. The game is extremely faithful to its video game counterpart. I don’t think both are necessary, however. I hope I helped you at least a little bit. Take care.
@@SoloBoardGamingKnight I find RE1 little overwhelming due to the amount of cards and the time it takes to set it up and the amount of scenarios. RE2 is more streamlined, have less cards and mainly it has Claire and Leon 🙂
The replayability really comes down to how the cards come out during gameplay and the items being at different parts of the map. It’s not a short game but I wouldn’t say there’s infinite replayability. Recently, I purchased the 3d terrain for this game and I’m going to replay it. Give me some time and I’ll update you on my thoughts after replaying it. I don’t remember off the top of my head if there was a difficulty setting.
