I'm not killer metallica fan but let's talk about facts, Hetfield better guitarist than Kirk H. Yes, He is not lead guitarist but He plays every note correctly and He nailed every note like in this video. Back in the Metallica history, Look at metallica live vids, Maybe you can find just 1-2 James busted playing on guitar. Plus, You can see that again about James's guitar sound and tone. (Maybe James check this sound and guitars by himself or he has better sound&guitar tech than Kirk's has) You can see always kirk busted on solo or guitar tone-sound at Metallica Live vids. If james get the lead guitar on metallica, He will %500 better lead guitarist than Kirk's lead guitar. James just playing ritm guitar but He's really good at his position. This is the reason why metallica still great music group and listing by the people. He is saved and masked Kirk's bad acts and effect on metallica's power. So, He saved Kirk ass at the stage.
You only hear Kirk mess up when he's playing his solo live, which, name 1 lead guitarist who never messes up a solo live. James almost never solos and when he does like in master, they're simple solo's and he sometimes messes them up. He's by far a superior riff player but when it comes to soloing Kirk is better, which is why he is the lead guitarist and James is Rhythm.
