1967-68 Television Season 50th Anniversary Tribute: Lost In Space (Season 3)

- Lost in Space - season 3! In our conclusion of our weeklong fond look back at the series, there indeed were quite a few changes in this final season. A new look, new style, new storyline focus, new title sequence, new theme song. Indeed, Irwin Allen was trying to get the series back to its roots with more focus on the Robinson family, and space travel.
Special mention must be given (as noted in this clip from the 1998 Television Special 'Lost In Space Forever'/Narrated by John Laroquette) to:
* New theme song creator (the original theme song was very good as well) John Williams.
* The special effects (the cool Space Pod!!) talent that was working with Irwin Allen on Lost In Space - in particular L.B. Abbott
* Costume designer (awesome space uniforms!) Paul Zastupnevich.
* The Robot designer (as well as Robby the Robot designer) Robert Kinoshita
Season 3 had an amazing look, combining special effects, color film, terrific costumes, and interesting storylines in early episodes of that third season.
But this was a time of the age of Aquarius, hippies, cool, and way out, groovy lifestyles, and Lost In Space was not immune to that theme. By the end of its run in 1968, the show went back into camp-overdrive! Still, as a little boy watching the show, it was all good.
Praise goes to the cast:
Guy Williams
June Lockhart
Jonathan Harris
Mark Goddard
Marta Kristen
Angela Cartwright
Bill Mumy
Bob May and Dick Tufeld
and crew that soldiered on during this later end of season three.
And special thanks to Irwin Allen, who always had his heart in the right place, even if the scripts, concepts and production processes were not always in synch with the cast and crew. Irwin had an amazing season in 1966-1967, with three high concept and successful series on the television schedule: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964-1968), Lost in Space (1965-1968) and Time Tunnel (1966-1967... more on that later next season!). After these three series left the air at roughly the same time, Mr. Allen had one more hit television series: Land of the Giants (1968-1970... more on this series in future here at Television Vanguard), before turning his full attention back to feature films and great success there in the 1970s.
Enjoy!

John Williams is my hero. Lost in Space to Rise of Skywalker. 53yrs FULL of masterful musical magic.
Word. The music of this series was so original.
Classic television show Even after 50 years I still find myself watching reruns
Me too!
When I was watching them as a little girl they were already re-pete's. I would watch them everyday and I looked forward to seeing them in the afternoons. If I found them on TV somewhere now I would still watch them.
I "ordered" my DVD copy from Amazon at a reasonable(estimate) of $25.00.
That one episode where they stumble upon the frozen convicts was a good one .
Season 3 opener....
I grew up never having a father. I so wanted Guy Williams to be my Dad.
ZORO!!
My father looked like Doctor Smith. We would joke about that when he was on the show. It turns out he also grew up in NY and was related. When the show was on, he would do a Dr. SMITH
impression. Like the real Smith, he over came his immigrant and Great Depression poverty background and spoke well and got an education.
He was a fight engineer in WW 2 on a PBY and PBM seaplane in the Pacific campaign. Later, he had a steady, ordinary job with Civil service .
That is what he wanted.
PS. I used to watch Zorro too. My younger friend had no dad and he imagined Indiana Jones as the person he'd like as a father.
He certainly seemed like he'd make a great father.
- Good pick for a father figure. He had a commanding presents on the screen.
- Sadly he couldnt get much work in Hollywood after the series & moved to Argentina for roles. He died fairly young too.
@@mydogbrian4814 oh that's sad.
The episode with the huge cyclops was one of my favorites. Had more than one nightmare about that episode. Great memories as a kid.
What an incredible show! I just love their outfits and the hairstyles of Judy and Penny. They seemed to change their hairstyles often but they were always beautiful.
Loved this show when I was in junior high. We used to call it Loused Up in Space after a Mad magazine spoof. Always wanted Don and Judy to make out. Guy William's role almost seemed superfluous.
did they have a hairdresser on board?
@@woody3590 I'm sure they did. It was a TV show.
@@JudyCerdaI think she meant on the Jupiter 2
@@robertdesantis729 yes I know. I was joking. It's just like on soap operas I've noticed the women wake up with her hair already curled in their makeup on in the morning scenes.
Whatever people thought of Lost in Space, it was great TV for kids. I used to rush home from school at the age of 10 to watch it.
I loved Lost in Space as a child! Best show ! only second to “I dream of Jeannie “ for me🙂
Forever trapped in pantaloons.
good T.V. back then...all crap today!
We only live once and lost in space was part of that special time
Totally silly, totally lovable with none of the darkness that affects the current remake. Dr Smith we love you.
The show was a massive influence on my life when I was a kid.
So much so, I have a B9 robot downstairs in my living room..
Every show had a good theme. Always something to learn.
It was this show that set me on a path to life as an Astronomer..
Loved it too! Especially Judy!
I wonderfully love this magnificent series of all time( Lost in Space), and (Star Trek) are my two favorite series ... (Timeless) ..... I love, I just love this Original from the great (IrwinAllen) as much, as well as their current versions, as well as I love the Original series, by GeneRodenberry) as well as the current versions of StarTrek! all of them ..... both the (Gene Rodenberry) Star Trek series! , like that of (Irwin Allen) Ambitious series, ecipcionally wonderful and (Eternal) series ....❤️👽❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Always loved this Show!
That was such a cool 😎 show from the sixties as a kid 👦🏻 I loved watching every episode
Jamás ni en ,100 años Aran una serie como esa con tanta calidad artística y menos sin irwin Allen ,venezuela
Penny was so 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. Angela Cartwright was my first crush and I wasn’t even 10 years old yet.
Mine too and I was 45!
Me too......so had the hots Penny 💘💓💞💕
I wanted be the Penny, for cause the big her hair! Lol.
@@iangregory3719 She didn't turn out so great after 25, did she?
@@trevorsmith7753 Doesn't matter....😁.......by that time L.I.S. was well over.....and all I had was memories 😁😁😁
1969 lost in space saw this when l was 6 years old very forward for it time thank you sharing it
I couldn't wait for that count down.
That countdown has always made me smile.
I thought the show was campy , I loved watching it as a kid and have fond memories of the show . Can't believe it was only on 3 years .
Well I was grew up in the 80s born in 79, and I watched every episode Growing up so it was on forever in syndication.
Great entertainment for the time, watching from Auckland New Zealand
Used to wake up at 6 am, walk my dog and then crash on my living room couch at 6:30 am to watch Lost in Space every day during summer on Long Island, pulling in WTNH Channel 8, New Haven, CT.
My dad used to watch this when he was a kid and he got me into it when I was a kid
I respect mr Allen when the studio said ,"We're cutting your budget for yr 4" "Really? We're not giving u a 4th season then!"
Nunca me voy a olvidar de esta gran serie perdidos en el espacio
Watched it as a kid and enjoying 50 years later being repeated on the horror channel in the UK. Daft but great fun. A classic
As a kid in the late 1960's and early 70's, my favorite two shows were "Lost in Space" and "Hawaii Five-O".
What about Star Trel?
alan, what about voyage to the bottom of the sea
Alan What aboutThe Flying Nun?
Mission Impossible
Dark Shadows & LIS for me. Tough choice between Carolyn Stoddard and Judy Robinson.
LOST IN SPACE one of my favourite series 1969 always love it 💖💖💖💖 thank you sharing it

LOL, Was hoping to see Vitina Marcus. She was Green Alien Lady Lorelei, _Handsome, Pretty, Handsome Dr. Smith_
1969 lost in space tv series very well done for it time space suits silver ROBBIE ROBOT the other ROBOT then the spaceship JUPITER 2 the CREATURES as well ALIENS as well thank you sharing it 💖💖💖💖
Angela Cartwright trained my right arm in the '60s....
I love this TV show when I was a kid back in the 1960's I felt this show was way ahead it's time . If you look the whole scene they had state of the art technology everything from the spaceship to the laser weapons . It makes you wonder where Ronald Reagon got the idea for the star wars program . Lost in space made help make inventors dream about the future because now it is a reality and we're currently living in that world !
Season 3's Lost in Space was a mixed bag. For every episode like,"The Anti-Matter Man,"there would be an episode like,"The Great Vegetable Rebellion."
The Anti-Matter episode, Don's other self had a beard.
I thought that Penny made a cute plant though.
Super cute in those lovely suits...
Penny Robinson and Winnie Cooper, hands down eternal crushes
I had a serious crush on Penny. I still think she is hot.
@@textech4056 Fat and frumpy. Like most women born in the UK.
One can always recognize a third season episode of Lost in Space.
That’s when Penny started filling out and looking HOTT.
This far more than what I see/saw here; more than meets the eye.🔮🌌✨🪐👾👽🌠
I loved this serious! I was a child in the epoque! Goid times!!!
Good times!
Foi um dos meus preferidos! Esperava ansiosamente para assistir.
The original lost in space series how wonderful it was it was forward for it time
No me perdia la serie allá por los 70 en Santiago de Chile. De hecho estaba enamorado de Penny, cuya actriz tambien trabajaba en otra serie -junto a su hermana- que tambien veía antaño que era Daniel Boone. Inolvidable el dr. Smith, el robot y Will Robinson. Al papá -Guy Williams- tambien lo veia en otra serie inomvidable El Zorro, donde era protagonista. Todos ellos me huelen niñez y me transportan a esa hermosa etapa de mi vida, largamente superada con mks 61 años de edad.
I was just a little boy when it was a still in production.
Now i understand why I remember two theme songs.
I'm four years younger than Angela Cartwright, so you know who i liked. 😙
Will?
This series is in my DNA👍
At 4:43, the leader of the space hippie bikers is Daniel J. Travanti, seen on the left (credited as Dan Travanty), who latter became the lead character Captain Frank Furillo in the 1980s series Hill Street Blues.
Man penny looks good
I always liked her better than Judy.
Yep, still in love with penny.
Your not the only one!!!! MY first huge Crush!!!!
You Americans had some good shows. The best we could do was program one, or possible Arkady Gaidar or the Yuri Yeschenko show. We had to watch crap about Heros of collective farming, or how Lenin's spirit inspires the employees of hydroelectric plant number 3 to work harder to serve the people.....
Loved Marta Kristen as Judy the blonde Goddess
Digital Sharecropper
DIGITAL SHARECROPPER LOL
LOL !
In communist russia you eat bear !
In america bear eat you !
Lol but they makea some nicea shows aha ! Yes isa true !
+The Dark Angel
Your blonde Goddess has a bony man-face.
This actually gets better over time
THE NEW THEME SONG WAS AWESOME !
Watching the new Lost in Space show on Netflix. I loved this show as a kid
If you love the new Lost in Space I’m not sure you can really claim to have loved the old Lost in Space. Bit like those born-again Star Wars fans, who love the new ‘aware’ versions.
F. Times never said I loved the new one. Stopped watching it after a few episodes.
Sunday channel 4 in the late 80s as a kid had the waltons on after it just before lunch, used to watch it every week as my dad got me into it with land of the giants & the time tunnel aswell, now have the boxset. Classics ❤👍🏻 for me the third seasons theme is the best.
Two of the three best episodes of the entire series came in Season Three "Visit To A Hostile Planet" and "The Anti-Matter Man".
I grow up with this show and I going back to my memory was so wonderful my child time 👍🏻 the life it going through too fast 😔
Yes life does go too fast I feel that
I always found it funny that the whole show was really just Will, Dr. Smith and the Robot. Everybody else was superfluous. Although I did have a thing for Penny.
We needed more Guy Williams (John Robinson) involvement. Episodes like Anti Matter Man.
Nodak81
First season was by far the best, it was a SERIOUS mind provoking show.
It's a shame they ruined it. Angela was beautiful.
There were several episodes that surround Penny and Judy .
- It was all about Penny. The rest was superfluous. Trouble was, half the time, she wasnt even on the show. & she got a little porky in the last season.
Season 3 used more of the cast as John larroquette stated in the piece...
I wont never forget that super serie
Oh Yeah. Loved it!
Judy was georgous.
A Fourth Season would have been 👍 Great !!!-
Should have happened
The ratings were good enough for a 4th season, but Bill Paley killed it as he did with Gilligan's Island.:(
Dr Smith in his groovy 60s hairstyle while doing his little twist was comic gold.
I love this show
How did they have a silver suit for doctor smith? He wasn’t supposed to be on the ship in the first place
They never really did either think about procreation while they were supposed to be going to alpha centauri with the exception of Don and Judy so I just felt bad for Will and Penny unless you add Dr Smith into the equation which is really sick 🤯🤯😂
I loved Lost in Space! I actually wore clothes similar to them (they were in fashion then). I am SOOOO embarrassed!
They look great to me! I actually just watched this and noticed how colorful and beautiful the outfits were.
Lost in space is the father of "Star Trek". First I was fall in love in lost space as a four years old child, later captain Kirk and his crew. Today all of the are a part of my heart. I believe that It will be our future a better world with hand in hand ✋. Religion capital etc. is not important as today, but humanity will have a great place 🌹. THX lost in space and star trek
Afshin6000 cmdrat I thought the forbidden planet was the inspiration for Star Trek
Agreed, Forbidden Planet was definitely both Star Trek's and Lost In Space's Grandpa. Star Trek definitely picked up on the concept of future humans exploring deep space concept and LIS picked up on the tech (Robert Kinoshita designed both Robby the Robot and LIS's B9 Robot). And the Jupiter 2's fusion core definitely was inspired by United Planets Cruiser C57D.
Actually, Gene Roddenberry "pitched" Star Trek TO CBS but they told Gene the network was "developing its' own" outer space series.
Afshin6000 cmdrat STAR TREK kicked LIS' ass every week.
The Special Effects in both was highly elaborate . Computer Graphics was a still a dream then.
You need remedial classes..
SEVENTH GRADE REMEDIALS..
A far cry from the great beginning and superiority of the first two seasons.
Incrivel!! Good Times!!
CUANDO VEÍA EN LOS 70 ESTA SERIE, JURABA QUE EN EL 2000 ESTARÍAMOS DESPLAZANDONOS EN NAVES POR LA CIUDAD.
QUE DECEPCIÓN
I like this way more than the big screen remakes
.....I grew up in the 80s and loved these reruns. ....channel 4 and 7. .....cheesiness is what makes it best.
How wonderfully campy!!
The original is Wayyyyyyyyyyyy better than the new one on Netflix, can't compare,
Yea that's true, they seem abit confused with it
It's funny as hell the original tacky scary quirky. Everything u want to be entertained.
Ok boomer
I'm just kidding I'm not like that but personally, I think the new is better
The FBI is better than Lost in Space original and reboot
My two fave episodes of season 3: Princess of Space & The Great Vegetable Rebellion.
Painful
I kept hoping that they'd leave Dr. Smith somewhere and focus on Guy Williams.
oh how id love to be on a ship with those 3 beauties
BRAVO!
I loved Lost in space! Even now if it was on around here it's not been on for years here,
The Jupiter 2 was the biggest bucket of bolts on TV but it didn't stop me from tuning in every week 🥰🥰.
What's really a crying shame is that due to the greed of someone or some group of people we can't watch free episodes here on UA-cam but at least we can watch free episodes of combat with Vic Morrow 👍👍😎
Former kid actor..Keith Taylor(who played US military school cadet:"Tubby" on"McKeever & The Colonel")played the bespecled, heavey set hippie on "The Promised Planet"episode.
Will and Penny were quite you d when the Jupiter 2 took off. Had anyone thought to provide clothing and space suits for them as they grew older and aged? Maybe were aren’t supposed to think about that.
maybe they got all that stuff from the wish upon a star episode. They just didn't show that part.
The Jupiter 2 is absolutely the best spaceship ever!
Very ahead of It's time
The "60's" = Lost in Space - BATMAN - Star Trek - Man from U.N.C.L.E. - Dark Shadows - The Munstrers - The ADDAMS Family - The Outer Limits - Twilight Zone - Hogan's Heroes - What "Television Entertainment" was MEANT to BE (IMHO) … NUFF Said ... “🍺 Dilly Dilly”❗
- Yes & its sequel;
"The Outer Part Of The Inner Limits."
I always had a thing for Judy! ❤️😘❤️😘❤️😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
Tempo Bom Esse Era Uma Vez um dia que todo dia era bom
You just didn't realize how cheesy those special effects and costumes were until you grew up.
Same with Batman
......that's part of it's beauty.
Some of episodes I have seen when they were brand new. Eric Herns Marietta, Georgia.
Episodes with the space hippies and the talking carrot led to a premature cancellation. While trying to appeal to three year olds they forgot the adult population.
howard gardner you're right. Cringeworthy episodes and sadly a fantastic series was on the demise. Early episodes were great and ahead of the rest. Children's tv really was something back then.
it was a kids show in competition with Adam West's Batman series. The adults watched Star Trek at that time
The Dark Angel True but I do think the final episodes were far fetched and surreal. Overall forgivable as has to be one of the best programmes on at the time. Or for that matter now!
Star Trek did a Space Hippies show-----GROOVY!
@@thejupiter2574 What I don't understand is why they wanted to compete against Batman. the shows weren't even on at the same time. It would have been much better had it stayed serious.
I was 12 to 13 years old when this was new. Wish I could go back and live it again. Now I'm old and my parents are dead.
+David Brown I feel the exact same way In fact I had a friend named Dave Brown and he is not dead. Would love to take the Jupiter 2 into a Time Warp and go back in time; change the past.

major west is very nice guy
goodness me , you could see the cardboard scenery moving,
in the wind ,but we loved it way back then ,simply, because we
knew nothing else.
super film din copilarie
I have all 3 seasons on dvd❤
Adoro muito esse filme
Leila. Maria. 💯💯💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍
The women were hot.
Especially when in those racing fire resistant suits. Angela Cart oh so w-right, seduce me Mrs Robinson, and Marta the hottest export from Norway.
@Nenethegreat W Well, even in that dreck "Terminal Island" and the definitely intriguing "Gemini Affair" there was something there that made me unbutton the top ones on my shirt to cool off some.
r
Como me gustaba esta serie. Por eso me gusta tanto la ciencia ficción.
Even as a little kid it irritated me how the ship wasn't big enough for a lower level and in the 3rd season they had a space pod dropping out of the bottom when there was no way it would fit. Along with all the other gadgets they used outside the J-2. There was no room!
The first season of LIS was a more serious Sci-Fi type. You had the feeling that somebody could actually get hurt or even killed, the last seasons were more campy in nature
First season was the best.
Assisti quando tinha 11 anos TV Tupi que saudade e era preto e branco 68
