  • Before the Netflix reboot, Lost in Space's Jonathan Harris ("Dr. Zachary Smith") screamed, fainted, danced, painted, sang and was America's first intergalactic queen. Dr. Smith is humorously recalled by Robinson family "mom", (and fellow TV Star), June Lockhart. #LostinSpace

I knew Bill Mumy years ago, and I was shocked when he told me he was still in contact with Jonathan Harris, and that Jonathan was married, and had been for many years. I know that doesn’t mean anything, but he and his wife had one son. Bill always spoke affectionately of Jonathan, and you could tell it was genuine.

I attended a Sci-Fi and comic book convention in Los Angeles during the 1990s, and Mr. Harris was one of the guests. During the panel Q & A, some kid stood up and had the nerve to ask him, "Are you gay?" I was shocked. Without missing a beat, Mr. Harris said, "No, are you???" It got a big laugh from the crowd. No my dear fellow, that would break their hearts. No one came out of the closet back then and I am certainly too old and disinterested to do so now." The Dark Angel , for as long as I've known Johnathan Harris, about 54 years, I've never seriously thought of him as being "gay". I always thought that he was playing the role. He had to come up with a act so that he could stay with the series as one commentator put it. Dr. Smith gay-? HUMP!

Dude was born in the Bronx, but hated the accent and patterned the way he talked after British performers of the day. MerlinsDragon1970: Which is what gets me is why people try to defend this show as being just as good as _Star Trek-The Original Series_-it _wasn't_, and the fact that Allen let Harris take over the show as he did with Smith demonstrates why _Star Trek-The Original Series_ is loved (and went on to have a greater success) and _Lost In Space_ did not. As it is, all that I like about this show is the comic book by Bill Mumy and the 1998 movie (which I would have like to see a sequel to.)
_Lost In Space_ would have worked well as a comedy similar to _Red Dwarf_ (and with a similar episode to _Red Dwarf's_ "Dimension Jump'' in which Smith, West, & the Robinsons meet a counterpart from another universe _that's better than him_.)

Neville6000 It was Irwin Allen's arrogance that killed LIS. Otherwise, the show would have had another season. I was never a Dr. Smith fan. Nothing against Jonathan Harris...just Smith. I believe the quality of the show would have been much higher, had Smith been written out after the first few episodes and the writers not had to write down to the Smith character. I believe Smith would have killed the show before the end of season 4. All that being said, I still prefer LIS over Star Trek TOS. I grew up with both shows, but just never warmed up to the original Star Trek. In that respect, LIS is superior, at least, for me.. There's nothing to defend. I like what I like. Mark Goodard did NOT think he would be the star of the show at all and has fond memories of Jonathan. on and off screen. Listen to commentary on current BLURAYS. All the cast lovesd Jonathan. +Joshua Hi Josh :) I loved the LIS robot as a kid and wanted him as my best friend so bad as did all the other kids. The Robot on LIS didn't have a Human name, unfortunately. He was just called Robot but his model number which he identified himself by is Robot B-9 and there is a great battery operated action figure of him the B-9 Robot from lost in space by Diamond Select Toys
Robbie the Robot was the classic 1950's Robot from the movie Forbidden Planet and had guest stared in two different episodes of LIS Robby the Robot and the LIS robot were both designed and created by the same person.
Have you ever heard actor Jonathan Harris as the voice of Lucifer the bad robot on the old sci fi TV show Battlestar Galactica from back in the late 70's the orig series. THAT was great fun too He, the robot talked just lke Dr. Smith exactly.

There are videos of him functioning being reviewed on youtube. The grey one says all the great classic lines. I believe they go for $50.00 each plus the $10 to $13 for s/h I think the website Entertainment Earth still sells the greyish classic one that says all the familiar phrases we grew up hearing and the lights inside him are very impressive, flashing lights :)

We all just got a kick outta the situations and the funny aliens, and Dr. Smith was the naughty old man who was always cooking up some scheme that put everyone in danger...and always got his comeuppance, but never learned the error of his ways! Sad that everything is so sexualized nowadays.

The Lady from the Green Mist was a character that was floating in space outside the Robinson's spacecraft. In a green body suit she would writhe, squirm, and sensually pine for Dr.Smith. His reaction was he was terrified by this beautiful seductress. Screaming in fear and repulsion. This seamed to be the reaction to any female character that had any kind of attraction or interest in him.

June Lockhart should have known better than to stoke the fires of the depraved into thinking that Jonathan was gay. He was NOT gay. I know a family member of his quite well and his whole family is sickened by this sort of innuendo. Jonathan was an intensely private man who loved his wife and son dearly. When he died his wife followed soon after because they were inseparable. The character of Doctor Smith was an ACT, a concoction worked out by Jonathan primarily to stop him being booted out of the series. He knew that if he kept playing the villain audiences would tire of him and Irwin Allen would have booted him off the show so he used his thespian ingenuity to cook up the camp and cowardly Smith we all got to love. He even played Smith at conventions but it was ALL an act. In real life Jonathan did not speak with the affected accent and was pretty much straight as an arrow. Please...please... I beg of all of you, leave the memory of this decent and good man alone. The show, the characters and his performance are now icons of the 60s and have earned a place in the hearts of those old enough to remember when the show first aired. Let the dead lie peacefully and do not cast mud upon those who cannot answer the barbs.

Luxitos...I used the word "depraved" to describe those who cast aspersions about Jonathan Harris and his sexuality... not homosexuals. Being called gay IS mudslinging if the word is then conflated by the accuser with paedophilia and effete behaviour...disgusting and wrong stereotypes!

tripsadelica It really upsets me also. We are not defined by our sexual preferences. Nor is our body of work. Jonathan’s view of Smith was that he was like an undisciplined child. I’m hard pressed to tell if June was commenting on Jonathan or the Character. Either way why are we reading sex into a children’s family adventure series??? He was a fine man, and a brilliant actor. As for his diction he was and wished to be distinct! I love and indeed miss the linguistic skills of the older actors!! Now kids don’t speak let alone speak English. So there! I have communicated with Bill Mumy via e-mail and I asked him whether or not the character of Dr. Smith was gay. He replied, No, but he has become a gay icon." Of course this does not address the question of whether or not Harris was gay but it is a question that has little interest for me and besides the man is dead and cannot defend himself. I say we should just enjoy his over the top performance and not bother to speculate on his sexuality.
This video, however, was obviously edited to give the false impression that June Lockhart was saying Harris was gay. Shame on the producer of this video.

As she says, Jonathan Harris would have been the first to admit he was gay, if he'd been asked. But in the fifties and sixties? Nope, such openness would have been a career destroy, especially on a family show. Give me honesty over your prudishness any day.

    • @zzzbbbooo

+Rex Mundi Well, I think June Lockhart was talking about the Zachary Smith character, not Jonathan Harris himself, who was married and had a son. I don't understand this "openness". Why do I want - or need - to know about your sexuality? When will people like you understand that most people don't care?

    • @thejupiter2574
      @thejupiter2574 8 років тому +8

+Renee Bloggs as explained at the very top of this thread or page, the whole thing here started because this interviewer saw four old old videos of Ms. Lockhart at four old conventions and one at her autograph table making comments and remarks about both Mr. Harris' sexuality and about his Smith character. She, at these cons implied that 'she' thought of his Smith character as a pedophile, always behind the rocks with Will. She also had made little digs and remarks about Mr. Harris' "Bi" sexuality and even Mark Goddard smiled and threw his headback remembering and said e'd forgotten.
I loved Ms. Lockhart as a kid and wanted her to be by Mom or wanted Mrs. Robinson to have been my mom, she was the perfect TV image representation but in reality she has a very very opinionated mind and speaks it. She should have just kept her comments to herself.
Yes @Rex Mundi it's true gay and Bi actors back in the day could not have a successful career without their front of a marriage. like Rock Hudson and Raymond Burr and so many others like Robert Reed ( Mr. Brady ) and Joel Grey. That's not to say they didn't love their wives and kids, they certainly did but yeah, one could not come out in the previous decades when being gay was still considered illegal and equated with also being a Pedophile as Ms. Lockhart's generation was taught.

Jonathan Harris was married to the same woman all his life. He was not gay. Early on, he purposely took on the persona we see in his acting in order to be a stand-out in any casting call. That included the high brow British accent. He was a brilliant and talented actor who could learn lines faster than anyone - and he often went off script while in a take - and that version would be better than the writer's original. This was not just for "Lost In Space."
I consider him to be among the very best actors ever - along with Peter Ustinov, Lawrence Olivier, etc,

Jonathan was very seasoned theatrical actor that throughout his career lived and worked with all kinds of hysterical types, from whom he most likely appropriated those kind of behaviors that would make Dr. Smith so important for the series. Remember, theater develops a kind of exaggerated acting that's all together different from cinema, and that's what he cleverly brought to Lost in Space.

Not because of anything he did, but I could have sworn I had read about his death a few years before. All those alliterative phrases would go over my young head. I used to watch the show for the monster of the week. Later, as an adult, I rediscovered the show and then I could appreciate J. Harris’ great acting and great portrayal of the Dr. Smith character. I discovered he was the main character of the show, without him this show would be nothing. Now I can appreciate the alliteration and the screams. I really get a kick out of both.

I"m watching the old series again on Roku Channel. Jonathan was just perfect for his part, nobody else could have pulled it off like he did. We hated him, but then into the 8th show or so we began to love him quirky ways. Without him the show wouldn't have made it. I never missed that show when it first came on. Star Trek came later....

Lockhart and Harris both had big personalities and they butted heads several times as both actors were very outspoken. Lockhart was also very opinionated. At the old conventions Harris wound up getting his own autograph table separate from the rest of the cast . He would 'jokingly' refer to June as 'The Dragon Lady' and 'That old ........'
and Lockhart at her autograph table would refer to Harris as 'That Old Queen' , had the fans hysterical, but they really did mellow out over the years. She made all kinds of sarcastic remarks about Harris' sexuality and how she perceived the Dr. Smith character as an old pedophile going after Will behind the rocks all the time.
Guy Williams on the show suffered the most in terms of disappointment and upset as he was promised his character would be the action hero like his previous Zoro TV character and then got upstaged by the comedy duo of
Smith and the B-9 Robot :) Mark Goddard walked off set one day as well in disgust over scene and line cuts for both he and Williams . Marta was pissed because Irwin Allen promised he'd develop the relationship between Judy and Don but he never did. Marta was hoping their characters would marry but it never happened.

This would have to have been news to his wife. "What? The actor who played the astoundingly queeny Dr. Smith on TV's Lost in Space was heterosexual? It's hard to believe, especially when you learn that Harris also enjoyed needlepoint, gourmet cooking, and opera. But he married his high school sweetheart in 1938 and stayed with her until his death in 2002. They had one son." Perhaps you might want to watch "Jonathan Harris on Autobiography".

Please. Gay men didn't come out in those days. And plenty of them married and had children because that was the only way back then if someone wanted children. Furthermore, gay men of that era sometimes married women to "prove" they were straight. Rock Hudson did that. Robert Reed (Brady bunch) did that and had children. Elton John once married a woman to shake the gay stigma as did Michael Jackson. It didn't make them heterosexual.

100% correct. So it looks like he wasn't gay after all. A 64 year marriage and one child. I don't see anything gay about that. Jonathan was a great character actor, one of the best. But Penny was my favorite character. She was the same age as me when I started watching LIS reruns in the '70s. Just like Bill Mumy, I had a serious crush on her.

The scriptwriters although are in charge. But the bottom line if they want a succesful end product as in any business allow the actors do what is comfortable. Sometimes forcing out dialogues from one whos not comfortable or not their type will come out ackward or unnatural. in the behind the scenes, Irwin Allen suggest to Mr Harris to take the ball and run so to speak, in other words allowed him to fill in his own script ideas filling in gaps since Mr Allen caught on to the fact realizing of Mr Harris's command of communication and elegant speech was all self-made.

    • @thejupiter2574
      @thejupiter2574 6 років тому +12

It was Irwin Allen that neglected the shows' characters and screen time once he saw how the Smith character had increased the ratings while they were in 'campinness' competition with the Batman TV show at night.
Marta Kristen was very disappointed that her relationship with Don was not developed and that their characters were not married as Irwin had promised her that would happen. Mark Goddard spoke about how he and Williams used to get disappointed over scene cuts or dialog cuts and one day Goddard completely walked off the set angry over his dialog being cut and Williams would spend a good deal of his off camera time just sitting in his dressing room listening to classic music to chill out. Williams was promised that he would be the lead 'action hero' as he was on his previous TV show Zoro. June Lockhart said she was not pleased with the limited roles of just being Domestic and serving sandwiches when her character was also a Dr. a biologist I believe or some such field.?? Lockhart was also not pleased that the characters of John and Maureen so much in love were not allowed to even exchange a smooch on the cheek because it was a 'kids' show, according to Allen.

He, Mr. Harris had explained in interviews that are on youtube of how he overcame his NY Brooklyn accent and taught himself to speak with perfect diction. I loved to hear him talk on and on.

Jonathan Harris was not gay. The host seems to insinuate he was gay with the attitude that there's nothing wrong with it while at the same time making fun of it. Typical liberal mindset... As far as I understand, Jonathan Harris was not gay, enjoyed a happy marriage and never hinted that he was in anyway attracted to men. Now, let me be the first to say as a free thinker, there is nothing wrong with being gay, and it's unfortunate that this low paid 'MC' is slyly making fun of Harris by suggesting that he was, (similar to the Opie and Anthony show where being gay or wanting to molest children was something to be made fun of). Is there something funny about being gay? Or hinting that Mr. Harris being gay would have his mind set on molesting a young boy? Do not confuse the character with the actor. I've met Jonathan a few times in the years before he passed and never have I gotten the impression he was 'gay'. In fact, my opinion was just the opposite.

To the kid's watching him, it wasn't important that Dr Smith was gay or not (and we didn't really understand what "gay" meant anyways at that age) What WAS important was that Dr Smith was FLAMBOYANT. His mannerisms were exaggerated and over the top. He freaked out in a way that a "manly man" (like Guy Williams or Mark Goddard) would never do. And that's what make him great for the show! When a monster suddenly appeared, Dr Smith would absolutely HOWL in fear! That made the monster even SCARIER and we kids watching the show shared the same reaction. You will notice that most of the monsters are seen FIRST by Dr Smith or the boy Will for maximum reaction. Then later, the 2 braver men come to the rescue and save the day...it's a perfect set up and Jonathan Harris performed it perfectly.
