- Billie Holiday performing "I Love You Porgy" on Granada TV's "Chelsea At Nine" February 1959. This was one of her last TV appearances before she passed away a few months later. This is videotaping would probably be one of Britain's earliest surviving B&W quad videotape recordings.
LADY at her best...she had no peers in her lifetime and 60 yrs after her death she remains the greatest jazz vocalist EVER
I'm turning 32 on Sunday and this is by far one of my favourite artists... She's a Queen ❤
The most unique jazz singer I’ve ever heard
One of them my top is Etta James Nina Simone and Billie holiday
I love you Billie. I always will.
She was the heartbeat of every song she sang.
A true instrument!!!!
This night was the last time Billie was ever on TV. She sang Please Don't Talk About Me and Strange Fruit after this song that night. 5 months later she died in New York City (Manhattan). She was 44 years old. She died from heavy drinking and drugs. She died with 70 cents in the bank and 750 dollars she had with her. Deeply sad life.
So sad..... exploited.... and could not escape the demons... so young... she looks quite well in this clip
ExclusiveLM “Sad _death._ “
She lived an *extraordinary* life, pal👌🏻
I love her songs
@Miss Myasia "someone"....pigs
@Miss Myasia she was under police guard and could not get heroin...in the hospital she was awaiting arraignment and so wasn't going anywhere...one of her few visitors was Frank Sinatra and after being begged to get her drugs....he tried.....but even Sinatra in 59.....was unable to help Billie.....for lots of reasons ..but he did try,,,,,
A true artist. She will never be forgotten.
I fell in love with this image and voice when I was a teen. I wished I was there in her time to protect her from her vices. I still love her today.
I have often felt that artists such as Ladyday lacked of those around them to protect them rather than take from them… as the lady wrote herself “god bless the child that’s got it’s own”. I agree I would love to think of her knowing in some small way how much she touched and keeps on touching people,
Billie's Swan Song. Her beauty seemed to grow with age and maturity. This is sheer magic - Right from her heart into yours - without the slightest interference. She can still move an audience to tears
LADY DAY!!!’
Always will be in love with this tragic beauty with the haunting voice.
if anyone wonders if "less IS more" - this is all one needs to hear...ever.
This is mesmerizing. Wow!
No one sings Porgy like Billie
It's the emotions she puts in every song that makes them great.
The way she sings gives me a unexplainable feeling in my heart 👑✨
She makes me cry
The best Jazz singers in the whole atmosphere 🌏🌲🍃🌱🌳🌏🌏🌏
Why does every recording discussion have to be a contest to see who is the best singer. There are many flowers in a garden and they do not argue over which is the best. Billie's version is just wonderful. There is no "best" singer --they are all different
Margi Chambers Like Sinatra, she never actually sang at all much, just talked in musical tones. Actual singers lack true charisma.
true
@phillip ph thank you for the correction phil im always open for learning
Billie holiday was the only voice that sounded like this
singing behind the beat. Sinatra came after & copied her style as he liked her style so much.
@@lizzy-folksongsscottis4518 this is true
Lady Day's Unique Voice is Priceless
Beautifully sung, a glorious voice. I love the way she raises her brow, so intoxicating.
She's very attractive, contemporary in appearance, even by today's fashion standards, but putting the words in context, those surface things only make the tragedy of the song and the great singer more compelling.
Soffice e poetica!.
Yes she looks fascinating but probably she is getting bad
Timelessness ✨
No one ever, can live up to the legend that is Billie Eleanor Holiday. She is the musical love of my life. No one will ever know how much I love Billie, her legacy, and her music. I could go on, but I'd run out of space. =*) 33333333333
God, I love to hear her sing, see her perform. She took such a relaxed approach to the song. So laid back.. a style all her own
Her phrasing ❤❤❤
Since watching United States vs Billie Holiday I enjoy listening n watching Everything about Ms Billie life ❤️💖♥️😏 ..... Truly heartbreaking how she was hurt by almost every person she trusted n loved.... The FBI detectives are all burning in Hell right about now 😠... I hope her soul is at Peace 🕊️ 🦋.... Rest on Miss Billie Holiday 🙏🏽 Amen
I love you Lady Day.
60 years later and this still sounds heart-felt, amazing! Thank you Billie. The music has out lived her and may it continue to remind us of how such an amazing artist this woman truly was.
I love her so much! 😥💖
the best female jazz singer in my humble opinion
SHE WAS SUCH AN AMAZING SINGER!!!! WHAT A VOICE!!!!!!
Beautiful Queen!
God bless u lady day 🙏 I absolutely love u and your music 🎶 I respect u and that u gave your life to sing to us .im so sorry what u went through with the law . I know u struggled with addiction but I don't judge u . I wish I knew u but I didn't exist. I was born 1982 . When my time comes I hope to meet u in the skies in heaven .u have a true friend in me
I LOVE THIS WOMAN😎😚😚😚😚😚😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
There's so much glamour in her voice and appearance. And her unique voice is really priceless!
the textures in her voice are so incredibly fine and rich. every note feels completely alive and unconcerned with perfection or cleanliness or any of those things. just alive and broken and free. i can think of a few artists through time that i hold in as high a regard as her but it is undeniable that no one sings like her then or now.
Queen 👸🏾
Quelle chanteuse magnifique! C'est ce que je retiens de Billie plutôt que la tristesse de sa vie.
So beautiful. Both Lady Day's voice and the accompaniment.
So touching.

I love you, Porgy
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me
I want to stay with you forever
And I'll be glad
I love you, Porgy
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
With his hot hands
If you can keep me
I want to stay with you forever
I like my man
Someday I know he's coming
Back to call me
He's gonna handle me
And hold me so
It's going to be like dying, Porgy
When he calls me
But when he comes, I know
I'll have to go
Обожаю всю жизнь!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is my heart, I get her.
BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!
The one and only Lady Day!
BEAUTIFUL!
Besides she sang beautiful she was prettyy.....
Simply stunning!🌸
Beautiful 💝
Eu amo essa bela voz!
Grande Billie Holiday!
Can't imagine any girl who wouldn't get in the mood to fool around listening to her sultry voice, dripping with raw emotional feeling. 😇
Canta demais
absolutamente natural
Holiday canta como se estivesse tomando um cafezinho.
Linda! Te amo
Billie died in 1959... in this video you can see all the pain she suffered in her eyes...
i see it
almost close to the end
and how they treated her,so pain,so lonely.
LADY DAY♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️⭐️
physically in better shape and spot on singing than had been the case in recent tv appearances, this is a treasure
She wasn't in better shape due to excercise, she was actually losing weight because of her Cirrhosis. She died 5 months later.
love her
+bern bren Oh, Billie Holiday, to listen to her and hearing the pain in her voice is like listening to her soul pouring
out of her - She definitely was one of a kind. I loved/love her soooooo! I had only wished that she knew how much she was loved.
Pure Soul💯❣️🎶
wonderfull
My father Julius McClendon(Ed) he had this song by our Black singer Billie Holliday but this is the first time that I recall listening to this song. This is beautiful song by Billie Holliday. Billie Holliday was and will always be the greatest woman Jazz singer and my dad just loved her music.
Magic ❤
Tracee Ellis Ross - Please consider a remake of " Lady Sings The Blues" I watched the movie over and over with my Aunt as a child. It's over due for a new generations.
Well, Tracee Ellis Ross would definitely not be the right person to play Billie Holiday., regardless of her mother's great performance in the original 1970s "Lady SIngs The Blues" film.
Andra day did one, its rough but great preformance😊
Unique
Thank you for posting.
She would have been a great dramatic actress based on the way she emotes on each line. Just watch her face on the line “ it’s going to be like dying porgy”.
Sincerity, soul and artistic focus. She had it in spades.
maravillosa mujer y cantante¡¡¡¡
She was deffo sent as an angel
For being as high as she was, she sounds terrific!
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
L O V E!!!
And a very lovely lead alto.
She is always believable.... a real story teller.... although I like NINA SIMONE on this tune.
I agree-it was an early Nina version that brought me here now. It’s worth listening to both.
Nina’s performance goes so deep that it’s haunted me in the light of #metoo. She holds nothing back when it comes to those hot hands and the desire to be loved by a man who will keep you safe.
😍😍😍
You know, she could be singing about her own addiction. Her sadness is what drives me to her but also makes me want to run for my life.
I realize Billie Holiday was a major talent, but on the basis of this tape alone as an initial exposure, it would be understandable for a first timer to wonder what all the fuss was about. It is not surprising that she died just a few months later. She seems to be at death's door during the very performance. Her earlier recordings, however, are sublime.
🎧🙏
That vibrato
Such a side life for a beautiful young lady
Wow actual 405 line video.
Her story was just so tragic. In some ways, Whitney's life mirrored hers. I think they said Whitney, Judy Garland, and Billie Holiday were a part of the "48 Club" Divas who died at 48. Don't know how true that is.
Greg Hunt I think she passed at 44 or 45
Billie 44. Judy 47. Whitney 48 they all left far too early
The truth!
Ain't she beautiful.
❤❤
👍👍👍
They found out Sinatra was with Billie at the end, comforting her and holding her hand. He cried for 2 days. Joan Noëldechen.
Who found out? Where is the actual evidence ?
💯❣️
მიყვარხარ lady day 💙
❣️❣️❣️
The government killed this poor woman instead of helping her sad sad sad she was very beautiful
She's my personal favorite, indeed, but if we're talkin who the best female jazz vocalist is, then that has to go to Ella Fitzgerald.
close to death here and no doubt under the influence, Billie was grand till the end...
Lagi terakhir sang quen blues
Billie...🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤ WGNJMNFAS
Si ce n'est pas de l'art, ça !!!
You forgot to add soulless.
Phooey DCU bank 🏦
The similarities to Amy Winehouse are startling
Amy Swinehouse can fuck off thanks. Do not contaminate the videos of these immortals THANKS AGAIN.
don't!
