It’s really touching seeing the portrait of the American & Soviet soldiers meeting at the Elbe for the 50th anniversary. This whole parade is far more subdued but pales in comparison to the one in 1990.
And a bit depressing too for me. A mighty superpower became a vassal of its very adversary. Russia kept on saying yes to everything the west asked for but in the end the only thing they got in return was NATO on their borders.

I know the anthem during the 1990s was unpopular but I think its actually a great anthem. No where near as famous or as resounding as the Soviet and current Russian Federation anthem but it certainly was the right choice for an anthem in the immediate years after the fall. It was composed by a Russian and had no real ties to either the Soviet or Imperial eras. However the lack of words and the general association with the turbulent 1990s seems to have put Mikhail Glinka's song in the coffin. There are some pretty great performances of the song too especially during the Soviet period.
How come the 90s were so crap for some places where their systems collapsed but golden times for the US? While communism fell in the USSR (well ultimately for the better not a very good system) Social Credit fell here a few months before the USSR officially dissolved leading to a decade of corruption too not as bad as russias but pretty bad
