Our asparagus get a top up of worm castings and aged horse manure in the fall. We cut the canes down just before Christmas. Unfortunately, roots from our neighbour's new hedge are infiltrating the bed. Not much we can do about it except move the entire bed. We're selling our home, so that's something we will leave for the new owners to sort out. ~ Sandra
@NanasWorms hi Sandra, Asparagus can be lifted any time during the dormant stage as long as the ground isn't frozen, but the longer you leave it the later you will get a harvest the following season. There is nothing wrong with potting some up and then they can be planted when it suits you in their new spot which of course you will well prepare weed free and lots of lovely worm castings. Remember the roots are very long so get what you can before trimming them and potting up.
I grew my Asparagus plants from seed this year so it will be years before I get any crops. Your Asparagus looks massive so must be getting the special Terry King homemade feed😄.
@ibrstellar1080 well worth only harvesting very little as it matures and when it is matured only harvest for 6 weeks and yes good management will give us an abundance.
Great finds with the compost ,trays, pots mate ,plots looking healthy with all that compost , I've got a few little jobs I need to get done but on roses plot ,I need to give the greenhouses a good wash down and disenfect 😊
@takethatshushu remember that we only harvest small amounts the first couple of years so the crowns get established, mine are from seed so needed 4 years before I harvested for the full 6 weeks.
I've put some compost on the asparagus and some leaves 🍁🍂🍁 on top. That's what I had. The underground worm 🐛 farm is a great idea. I was anyhow planning to put one in my pumpkin bed. Have a great new gardening season.
@@terrykingsallotmentgardening Yes, that;s true. I have bottles in my containers that work as a mini worm farms. Like that I don't need extra fertilizer.
@RobinGardens as long as it is weed free they will do well, getting established crowns do speed up the process and you can't beat cutting them and eating raw or steaming for a few minutes.
I, hope you and Mrs K had a great Christmas. I have only just cut my asparagus back today. My hubster then went to the local stables and got me 6 bags of well rotted stable manure for my home kitchen garden, so I mulched my asparagus beds with 3 bags and the rest will go in the fruit cage. I have a further 8 bags at the allotment to top up the beds as I harvest the winter crops. Wishing you both a wonderful New year with everything you hope for. Happy growing 🙂
Love all the berries on the asparagus looks very festive for the birds. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and Sandra had a nice quiet day ❤. Here’s to a much calmer 2025 where the only shit you have to deal with is on the beds. Happy New Year, Ali 🥶🇨🇦
@myrustygarden some of the berries have gone, but it is so mild here considering the time of the season so don't expect them to disappear until February. Hopefully no more shit for 3 years Ali.
I will definitely add a worm farm if i create a new asparagus bed, i was actually thinking about it so excellent timing Terry. Hope to post your potatoes on new year's Eve if it's open.👍😁😁👌🥔❤️
@terrykingsallotmentgardening it's already wrapped up but I will check Steve's video and write it on the package. I can't remember the name of them but it begins with a M I think 🤣👍🙏🥔
This coming spring with be Year 3 from having grown my Asparagus plants from seeds ... so I'm looking to enjoy at least 1 meal off of them for the two of us. I'll be taking off the ferns tomorrow and adding a mulch on top of home made compost doused with a litre or two of my "worm pee" liquid so it can soak in to the soil over the rest of the winter
@jollyjollyme I personally didn't harvest anything in the first 2 years, but they were from seed so hopefully if your crowns were mature you will be rewarded with some nice ones in spring.
I'm hoping to be able to pick a stalk or two next year from my asparagus. I grew it from seed last year and the plants were quite strong by the end of summer
My mother-in-law gave me asparagus seeds off her plant. I've just potted them on - lots grew, but 10 survived and doing well - I thought I had some dead flower heads/dried little berries on the old stems - turned out to be tiny snails! Little beasts! I'll plant them in the veg bed next year - hopefully not with the snails.
@@terrykingsallotmentgardening a friend of ours finds some occasionally, but understandably doesn't say where it's found. A farmer told us where stuff is dumped occasionally near him, but we've never been lucky enough to find any. 😂🤣

Did you not consider taking them with you as it takes years to grow from seeds?
@ Good point. We only have 10 crowns, so it shouldn't be too hard. What time of year would be best to lift them?
