- Katie Couric sat down for a recent interview with Comedienne Sarah Silverman. The two discussed her Comedy Central show "The Sarah Silverman Program," her difficult childhood, and the breakup with boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel. This is an extended version of the Sunday Morning piece with lots more interview packed in!
I think her humor is so different form what people are used to these days, that some people just don't like it. But for those of us that can appreciate it, shes pretty great.
I love this woman so much. She had me cracking up throughout this vid. I really really love her.

Sarah Silverman is razor sharp funny. Her humor is like a very good honey/ mustard. It sits on the edge of on one side having the sweetness of typical humor but on the other side adding ingredients that in normal circumstances would burn or be unpleasant by themselves, but when mixed with the sweetness can become very addicting. She is a brilliant comedian.

I don't think you're paying attention. Her use of language, her dissection of comedy and her love of silly and absurd humor are all marks of -- you guessed it --a sharp mind and a brilliant comedienne.
To describe depression as "I felt homesick, but I was at home" really nails it.

How impossibly brave is what Sarah is saying to us? We SO need to hear this.
Sarah is not a victim, and so she has navigated herself though the trials of life that often break us...yet she has come out as a winner.
BRAVO, and BRAVO again. She is a bastion, a lighthouse, for the rest of us who struggle with the burden of (historically temporal) diagnoses.

Sarah silverman is very funny and talented, you just need to have her kind of humour,.
I love Sarah. She's an incredibly smart comic but sadly her humor is lost on a lot of people. In her stand-up (and in her show, obviously) she's playing an alternate persona of herself, like Colbert used to do on his show. I don't get all the hate! Her book delves deeper into a lot of the things she talks about here, highly recommend.

In the show, she's like a female version of Pee Wee Herman. Wide eyed innocent who breaks the wall, addresses camera. Very funny woman.
to me not sad because i think she might like it that way-kinda like an inside joke for those that do get her act. I did read her book and enjoyed it. I appreciate her as a person who balances it all and adjusts to life to get the most of it(at least in her business as a comedian)-HA! like i know her personally-- lol at myself for that. cheers.

Silverman is a good example of personality-driven acting, and that is always the best kind. She doesn't plot or strain to do what she does. She just does what comes natural, and learns to let her mind flow freely. She is a great media personality to mimic in style.
Bedwetting usually comes from emotional abuse/neglect in childhood. Taking Xanex at that age explains so much too with stunted emotional development.

That's a common misconception that all comedians are manic depressives. While it is true that some are, there is no evidence that comedians are more depressed than any other profession in the world.

Yes he did and the world is a lot sadder for it, but there are plenty of stand ups who have movie careers and selling DVD's and working in theatres up and down various countries that didn't. It was still a generalisation as you can't provide any statistical information or any evidence to back up such a ridiculous claim.
I think Roger Ebert might have gotten the closest to describing her style. She is a young woman who was raised to know better. She knows exactly how she and other people are supposed to behave, which allows her to catch other people who know better completely off-guard. She knows exactly where to poke the upper class that ordinarily looks down on comedians and leave them too flustered to respond.
Sarah is too much, she is a riot.

@funkbebe She doesn't sell racism. I'm not a racist person and I know for a fact through connections that she is not a racist person at all. In fact, she feels very strongly against any kind of discrimination. It doesn't take a genious to figure it out. Her heart is inmense, and as she always says, the persona she plays is the ignorant and she makes it clear, so others see the horrible behaviour of that "persona", it shows how some people really are. But she's acting in an ironic way.

Did you even watch the video? how can you say she's a racist when she rips on herself even? all the time. As she said, she has strong opinions against racism, homophobia etc, and goes the opposite direction to shock people, and maybe the absolute value of that come through. And it is very good. Its a way of making people aware in a humourous way, it puts things in perspective.

This was a cool interview and Katie Couric is one of the few great journalists that exist. She presents herself as a human being instead of a machine that just spits out question after question.

Don't know why you removed your comment. Just not sure why you're so gung-ho on traditional therapy. Are you a therapist? I'm not saying it has no place. And I certainly think that bad drugs are used far too often instead of getting to the root of the problem. But talking therapy is generally not very effective for people. That was Stan Grof's discovery: The unconscious and Oedipus complex are real but people need a peak experience that free association can't create. Hence his use of LSD.
Well, I see you're one of the many who has a strong opinion on Rush, but never listens to him. I get Silverman's humor. My point is that, (using Limbaugh as an example), if someone the media regularly maligns were to make any jokes like Silverman they would be crucified. The MSM is blatantly bigoted, hypocritical, etc. etc. but I know arguing the point is silly and I apologize for wasting your time.
Sometimes her jokes kind of fall flat, as is often the case for a lot of controversial comedians, but the one thing about Silverman that I just adore is her steadfast refusal to be serious about anything for too long. It's hard to be like that in a society that usually rewards those of us who draw clear moral lines in the sand and declare what is and isn't funny in advance without letting that process happen naturally. Too many of us are too self-righteous to understand her way of comedy.
