Being offended is usually an opportunity to look at yourself - who the f cares if someone else is "offended" - if one does not get the joke, primarily because good comedians are some of our best thinkers, one should probably shut up
There were 2 moments that caused me to not respect that guy. 1. When he ripped on Sarah's satire and then refused to make a satirical joke upon probing from Bill (Bill should have leaned into it a bit harder but whatever... he still leaned into it about 10 times harder than anyone else would... especially at that time) 2. When he proposed the "I love Chinese People" as a punchline. This is the man that was criticizing Sarah's grasp of satire? And THAT is what he calls FIXING a joke? Jesus... the worst thing about this is... that guy is an absolute moron, yet he still got applause for playing to people's sense of righteousness. That audience was the WORST. If this conversation were held without an audience, Sarah would have won handedly... and David Spade might not have pussed out of the discussion entirely.
This was filmed in August 2001. Don't worry gang, this debate is gonna seem real meaningless compared to the problems you have coming in a month's time...
The point Sara needed to make was that in her joke she was casting herself as a racist to stay out of jury duty.. something, I’m sure, many of us have considered... when anyone familiar with Sarah knows full well but she is not.
Here’s the thing you should ask yourself: could Sarah Silverman have replaced the word Chink with the N-word in her joke? Or for that matter, any of the derogatory term of other races/ethnicities? If she did, then I have no problem with the joke. If she refuses, then why the double standard? If that’s the case, I think it’s pretty obvious that she picks on Asians because she doesn’t think they’ll fight back.
MisterObjectivity I think it's physically slow. It comes from slavery days where it was hot as hell in the south and there would be no reason to do anything quickly because well there was no incentive to.
I've heard it many times. Always from black people. It's in line with the term BPT. I worked in a tech department and one of our techs who is black was late one day and said "y'all know I run on bpt" aka black people time. I also worked in a very diverse karaoke bar and heard it several times as well as about black people being slow (like to get up on stage) but it was always black people saying it.
“Who are you hanging out with?” lol. Called her out on her b.s. in realtime. And this was peak Sarah Silverman. Today, she’d be in lockstep with those two wokesters.
I disagree, even today I see people casually throw around slurs when referring to people *and* just as referential terms like "He gyped me" all the time, from many backgrounds, this is a normal part of North American English.
It was back when the left was in revolt against the puritan right. These two "advocates" people were part of the vanguard of the offense merchants and the bigoteers. Now Silverman spouts this shit unironically because the left have become the puritans.
@Mister Garfield That's crazy that it is true. I'm seeing that right now. I'm disgusted because as a black man, I know there is racism, and typically, the media hates covering it. Now, they do it and then sidedoor in anti-Semitism where possible like it's the exact same level in America as all of these systemic things. Sure as hell doesn't affect their wealth like racism affects ours.
@@cardboardbelt What are you on about? These days Silverman would never dare use the words chink or nigger in her comedy shows or anywhere else for that matter, she's a full blown SJW.

The joke points a finger at racism for sure. It is not racist. After hearing that joke, don't you cringe at the thought of how some people treat others. That is the point of the joke. Satire!
No it does not. If the racist slur about Chinese was replaced with the n-word and you are black you would feel the same way Mr. Anoki did about the joke.
@@richardlug6139 the n word is a fake news ploy intended to create conflict, though some are "offended" ask diamond and silk or Candace Owens or Dr. Thomas Sowell, they know that African Americans are decent honorable caring intelligent people. First, although it uses a racial slur, some people missed the joke. It's the idea that someone is dumb enough to think saying a racial slur is ok if they add "love" in front of it. That's the joke. Context matters. As for the n-word detour, Maher was and continues to be wrong on that.

It's weird to see Sarah Sliverman standing up for free speech. Today she is on the side of the minorities and victim class. What happened since the early 2000s to now?
Silverman's last joke about "Chinese Coke" comes in just before the clip ends and flies almost undetected beneath the radar before Maher cuts the segment. I love that she was still trying to find more comedic ways to be provocative and put out the fire with gasoline.
I think this is the only time I ever saw Sarah appear genuinely angry. Furthermore, when Guy tells Sarah's joke in his "correct" way it doesn't even make sense.
“Chinese”? Yeah it does, it just doesn’t hit like chink. Which is the whole point, the joke is only built on the word Chink, nothing else. Top notch humor
As politically incorrect as Bill Maher was, his show didn’t get booted from ABC until he cracked a joke about 9/11. So yeah, the same people who complain about minorities getting triggered and offended easily, got him removed.
serge lefleur it was his sponsors that fired him immediately when he spoke about 9/11 derogatorily before the dust had even settled. Why is you liberal pricks think it is OK to be unpatriotic or to not give 2 shits when 3,000+ people had just lost their lives. You people are just pure evil.
@Are you Serious? You just made it very clear that you have no idea what you're talking about. He did not make a joke about 9/11, he did not down play 9/11. One of his guests called the attackers cowards and Bill correctly pointed out that no coward would intentionally crash an airplane they are on into a building. he lost his show because he pointed out the objective fact that the people in question could not have been cowards, by definition.
What’s worse is we have went backwards in the past decade in terms of discussing race and racism. It’s so warped at this point that I don’t even know what the term ‘racism’ even means lol
Haven't seen this since it aired. He must have been Suey Park's mentor, I mean JEEE-ZUSS!
Brave? Lol, she knew Spade and Maher were on her side and it didn't take about any courage as a still coming up comic to get publicity. But...I get ya.
@@noahhurley-abelew6536 Well, for one, Spade wasn't exactly jumping in to defend her, he tried to stay diplomatic while agreeing that comedy is risky and hers is moreso than average. I mean, it was presumably Bill that agreed to stack the audience full of people who disagree with Sarah to begin with ;-) Are you telling me, though, that having two panelists 100% attacking you and having the entire audience stacked against you isn't the worst end of that deal? It was a 350-ton conventional bomb..." The biggest conventional bomb in existence today is the MOAB thermobaric bomb, which yields the equivalent of 11 tons of TNT. There is no such thing as a "350-ton conventional bomb". A 350-ton bomb could only be nuclear. Netanyahu is certainly not referring to the 1993 bombing, which was an 0.6-ton fertiliser bomb. What, then, is he referring to only two days after 9/11? It's easy to show that the yield required to obliterate one of the Twin towers with a single MRR nuclear bomb placed in a sub-basement shaft would be around 300 to 400 tons of TNT. (MRR = minimum residual radiation.) How could it be that Netanyahu got this figure right on the mark? Go figure. If you actually think 9/11 wasn't orchestrated, then I feel sorry for you. As Ann Marie mentioned, black people who use the “N” word, don’t understand the history. And she is, speaking out against black people who use it. Contrary to belief here, self-respected African Americans, don’t use the “N” word day to day. I don’t expect to change your opinion of black people, because the many times I’ve had this discussion, it’s in one ear and out the other. This country will always have deep, racial issues, and will always be divided. The proof is on the panel. Again, no Bill, not every black person uses the “N” word, that’s simply ignorant on your behalf.

I think it would've been helpful to deconstruct Silverman's joke, to see the effect that it was trying to accomplish. The joke aims to be funny through irony. By having the narrator pose one blatantly racist statement, becoming uncomfortable with it, and then attempting to fix the problem by giving another blatantly racist statement. The irony is that the really hurtful part is left in, and this is obvious to everyone but the narrator, thereby exposing the hypocrisy in the narrator's racial views, and exposes the narrator to be a racist while thinking she's not. The joke, moreover, is useful to some degree because it does work to help expose the prevalence of these hypocritical viewpoints in our society.
LOL!!! Do you think there is a single person who heard that joke and was like damn, I am racist against Asians by using racial slurs! Or did it just get laughs because Sarah Silverman was a cute girl who you would not expect to drop racial slurs in her act. You if you're honest, you know it's the later. And that it's exactly what Aoki said, normalizing people using slurs because they are "so liberal" they get pass to be funny.

Well, this was in 2001... Just last year, Silverman in an interview with vanity fair saying she stopped using the word gay, saying how offensive it could be, etc. Silverman might have bought into the PC culture as well
before i watched her newest stand up special i was wondering how it was gonna be--because i knew there was no way people were gonna let her get away with the kinds of jokes she used to tell. i was a little worried it was going to be shit, but then she got to the bit about crucifying her dog and i was like, "nah she's doing just fine."
she said it was because of her 7 year old lesbian niece... how does a 7 year old know they're a lesbian?? Anyhow, she is giving it a try and it's not working. She might revert as soon as SJW culture dies more. There'll be a gamergate #2 revolving some other form of media and that'll probably do SJW's in.
So, Guy Aoki thinks that 120,000 Japanese-Americans were placed in internment camps because they got called "Jap" repeatedly? Yeah, sure. I'd like Aoki to address the Rape of Nanking, and maybe he can tell me what words the Japanese used to make the Chinese "less human" so that such atrocities were possible. Also, why is it okay to call a British person a "Brit", a Canadian person a "Canuck", an Australian person an "Aussie", but not a Japanese person a "Jap"? Isn't "Jap" short for "Japanese"? It's called an abbreviation. And I'm pretty sure that the whole world calls Americans "Yanks", regardless of whether the American in question is from above the Mason-Dixon line. But Americans don't complain about this. German rock music is called "Kraut rock". I have yet to meet a German person who finds this offensive (and I've met plenty). And at 8:53, AMJ complains about an Asian-American who was murdered, and her biggest problem seems to be an offensive term written on the victim's car. Not the murder itself. She's more upset over the fact the murder was motivated by racism then the simple fact a murder took place. Also, AMJ deserves the world's smallest violin. "Lives with it everyday"? Bullshit. She benefits from first-world American privilege. She's a rich celebrity who gets to play fucking golf. Maybe if she's so concerned about racism, she can start by asking why her Big Sports Brand golf shoes are made in a Chinese prison camp by adolescent children who get paid less than five dollars per day. AMJ is African-American? Then so is Carly Simon. Because at what point do you say this person is no longer "black"? Is Carly Simon any less of an "African American" than AMJ? Simon's skin is much lighter, but her facial features are actually more African than AMJ's (and for those wondering what the hell I'm talking about, Carly Simon does in fact have African heritage, along with German, Spanish and Semitic). I'm not denying AMJ's African heritage, but Bill Maher makes a good point: you wouldn't know AMJ is of (partial) African descent unless she told you so. She could be Latina, she could be a Gypsy, she could be Sicilian, she could even be Jewish (I've met Jews much darker than AMJ). Fact is AMJ isn't black, she's politely brown at best. And for AMJ to postulate that she faces the same amount of racial prejudice as, say, somebody who resembles Chris Rock, is totally dishonest. Bottom line: people are always going to be arseholes. Words only hurt because people let them hurt. If the words come to you from a loved one, yeah, sure, I get it--that hurts because it has weight. But if somebody who is a total stranger calls you an awful name, what the fuck should you care? I get called awful names all the time, and do you know what I do? I laugh. Out loud. So my verbal assailant can hear. They shut the fuck up because they know that I refuse to take them seriously, they have no power. Works every time. And I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure that Africans in the most impoverished parts of Africa and Asians in the most impoverished parts of Asia are a lot more concerned about third-world poverty than a couple of spoilt AMERICAN wannabe celebs whining about stupid words that they ought to be adult enough to shrug off. Racism isn't cool, but neither are folks like Aoki and AMJ, who can't see the forest for the trees.
Jack Tucker Actually they did and and still do. You are talking about multiple different things as one statement. So i am answering mutiple different issues as one answer also.
people need to be more tolerant. And why people try to mix different things together as if they are one and the same thing, it is always funny to observe such an attempt.I've met african people who've told me that the most power abusive people in the world are certain africans. Asian's always joke between each other, that they are the biggest racists/discriminating themselves on certain levels. But we need to distinguish between the content of what we're dealing with! comparing racism of the level of "human rights violations" and a Sarah Silverman joke is just waaay off common sense. And then continueing to spreading comparisons to various hate crimes or slavery during the civial wars is just plain out ignorance. It's just not only an insult to that persons intelligence, but also to be so naive as to believe every1 else's intelligence should be so low that they would believe in such nonsense....

@ I didn't say we didn't do anything wrong? I'm saying the blame is not all ours to carry. Humans were shitty in the 1600s no new news there.
And to say the wall is purely racist is just disingenuous exaggeration. You don't understand what is happening. But until you pull a body out of a joshua tree with its genitals cut off to the bone, and the names of the persons family carved into their chest as a hit list, you never will. There are legitimately EVIL people that are using our unsecured border to produce massive amounts of human suffering and your solution is to let them right in. You are naive and ignorant and you don't know what it is you are truly advocating for. You want the Sinaloa Cartel to have a free open border? You want MS13 to walk in whenever they please?
The wall is not to keep out people because they are brown. If that's what comes to your mind maybe you are the racist one.
@@geeewhizz3245 oh, so your solution to stopping the cartels, who make hundreds of billions of dollars a year is to erect a wall on a border thousands of miles long? Is that really what you want that wall for brother? To keep the cartels out? You understand they use submarines in the gulf of mexico? The few million dollars it takes to build a tunnel under the wall? Or to simply cut a hole in it? You can't be serious. If you fuckin guys were serious about handling the cartels you'd simply assasinate the leaders and wipe out their means of production, which we're both aware the U.S. can do easily. There were 2 moments that caused me to not respect that guy.
1. When he ripped on Sarah's satire and then refused to make a satirical joke upon probing from Bill (Bill should have leaned into it a bit harder but whatever... he still leaned into it about 10 times harder than anyone else would... especially at that time)

The point Sara needed to make was that in her joke she was casting herself as a racist to stay out of jury duty.. something, I’m sure, many of us have considered... when anyone familiar with Sarah knows full well but she is not.
101 %
This comes back to having to explain jokes......
It's all about context.
The point was... It was a bad joke, and she did a lousy jobbin telling it. Period.
Guy Aoki is feigning offense. He’s clearly not offended at all.
Asians realized at one point that racial discrimination is quite the racket and they wanted in on it.

that's the first time I've ever heard "slow as a n*****". i think she got that one backwards.
David Koval Black people do walk really slow in shopping malls, though.
David Koval I believe it's meant as "mentally" slow, not "physically" slow.

And this was peak Sarah Silverman. Today, she’d be in lockstep with those two wokesters.
I disagree, even today I see people casually throw around slurs when referring to people *and* just as referential terms like "He gyped me" all the time, from many backgrounds, this is a normal part of North American English.
The show is called “Politcally Incorrect” and the audience literally came to be be offended.
It was back when the left was in revolt against the puritan right. These two "advocates" people were part of the vanguard of the offense merchants and the bigoteers. Now Silverman spouts this shit unironically because the left have become the puritans.
They came when they were offended, and nothing has changed since.

Why that ? Could u explain ? I would really like to know why she turned out like Guy Aoki.
@Mister Garfield That's crazy that it is true. I'm seeing that right now. I'm disgusted because as a black man, I know there is racism, and typically, the media hates covering it. "Now, it wasn't a nuclear bomb. It was a 350-ton conventional bomb..."
The biggest conventional bomb in existence today is the MOAB thermobaric bomb, which yields the equivalent of 11 tons of TNT.
You're totally brainwashed and naive as yo how ultra-hard capitalists and Zionists operate. I think it would've been helpful to deconstruct Silverman's joke, to see the effect that it was trying to accomplish. The joke aims to be funny through irony. The irony is that the really hurtful part is left in, and this is obvious to everyone but the narrator, thereby exposing the hypocrisy in the narrator's racial views, and exposes the narrator to be a racist while thinking she's not.

Lol what?
When?
people need to be more tolerant.
MisterObjectivity. well said sir, I agree with every aspect mentioned, thank you for expressing more clearly than I was able to. plus keyboards have a mind of its own, very time consuming with all the constant corrections needed yet typos still get missed before touching send button. Again, Bravo!! 😊
Ianthe22 umm, excuse me, not all Africans are black. Neither in present populations of political countries nor all African natives black. Research North Africa history and Sub Saharan Africa. peace
How can this woman say she's the only person qualified to talk about African-American issues, but doesn't have a problem openly talking about Asian-American issues while there is an Asian-American on the stage across from her?
She's clearly an idiot.
*random actress: "lynching still happens in Europe too"*
*confused european: what?*
"The other is my friend Steve who actually went pee-pee in my Coke" Should've got a way bigger laugh.
yeah, sarah went nuclear! i thought of patrice o'neal when she did that. that's just how hard it was
That shit was gold!
It was awesome, but I have to admit that it took me a second. I hadn't heard (or thought of) that little song in probably 35 years. So it was a moment before I connected her comment to the childhood rhyme. :-D I think the joke went right over Aoki's head. I agree it was f*cking great.
Who could have known they had barely scratched the surface of PC
Based on Guy Aoki's demeanor he is definitely THEE arbiter of comedy
& aspiring porn actor
Pretty sure Sarah woulr be on Aoki's side today.
David spade killed it in this episode
Watching this in 2021 is an absolute trip.
