These hills turned our fantastic - the thumbnail really caught my eye. I make similar hills but using foam. Your wash techniques really make a big difference. Keep it going man!
Thanks so much. I wanted to do a new take on an old design. Cork works well for bases so I figured it would be a great substitute for foam in this case.

Thanks so much. Flock seems more appropriate for things like moss rather than grass. Static grass is more grass like IMHO. Does that answer your question?

These hills are great I did something similar with polystyrene packing a little while back. Where do u get ur cork from ?

If your going to apply PVA to the surface afterwards via the PVA/paint/sand mixture, what does the layer of joint compound beforehand do? Does it help to smooth out the surface a bit to remove the cork texture?
It fills the porous cork making it so that the glue/paint mixture doesn't soak in too much which will also prevent the cork from warping once paint and glue are applied later on. The spackle also softens the edges between layers so that they're less abrupt. Thirdly (or I suppose fourthly) it can be used to add lumps and bumps to the large flat areas. So there are multiple advantages to the spackle layer.

What is the drywall compound for, to seal the cork? Is that an important step?
Not only to seal the cork (which is an important step) but also to soften the edges between layers, as well as, creating ground texture. You can use it to create lumps and bumps as well. This way the flat areas don't have to be so flat. To go back to sealing it...I find the spackle works great at sealing the pores while not causing much warping. If you were to use glue or paint to seal the cork it would risk causing much more warping. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching.

Sorry to hear. In Canada we can get cork tiles pretty cheap at Dollarama. Sorry if they're more expensive in other parts of the world. I find it a marvelous material to work with.
@@immersiveterrain I've seen cork fairly cheap these days but cork used to be a more expensive product and Yes it is a wonderful product to work with. Your hills look really good.
