I've come back to this video years later, having had wonderful success with doing it myself and getting compliments every time I bring it out! Highly recommend this approach to anyone on the fence, if you're careful with your shapes this works just as well for tournament terrain as it does more narrative stuff since the texture of the rocks is grippy enough to keep models in place on modest inclines. Can't wait to have time to make more, and I'll keep directing people here for years to come!

For sure FunkytheFungusMonkey! I did a video called "rock formations" where I used similar techniques to create large boulders and cliffs! Have fun! 👍😀
Oh I agree! It is really an amazing process which I think involves a bit of faith or just a sense of exploration you know? I tried this originally when I got bored of doing just grey to white stone terrain and it turned out quite nice! So now this is my go to whenever painting anything stone-like to be honest! Thanks for the nice comment! ;D

I can't wait to make these! I made some Black Magic Craft rocks, and they are great for miniatures to stand on but they look too different from my other terrain, so I am excited to try your method. Thank you so much for sharing!
Oh man. Just the other day, I lamented how I didn't have large enough bark pieces handy to make a big rock to put in my forest scatter, and was planning to use sculptamold to do the ground around it. Now, I've got great evidence that I can do the whole thing with what I have! The wire brushing and paint work really helped sell the striations, I'm definitely giving that a go! I've seen other people also use blues when doing color modulation on rocks, and had some success with it myself. Should work great alongside the ketchup and mustard! Wonderful video, as always, I'm so glad I found your channel!

It’s like watching the people at Industrial Light & Magic (pre-Lucasfilm) build dioramas of Dagobah and Hoth for The Empire Strikes Back. This definitely gives me ideas for the diorama I may eventually build for our minis on display in our living room. But, that’s in the future. Thanks again for such an amazing project.

These hills are great, you've given me an idea what to do with my cast off styrobits thank you! Paint job on these looks great and modeling with the sculptamold makes them look quite realistic. I love everything about this tutorial.
Hey Leif, I haven't made hills in a while, but my first ones were terrible. I decided to make them all identical, for some stupid reason. I am particularly impressed with the idea of pieces made for the corners... I don't know why that never occurred to me. Very nicely done! Also, the use of the "paper towel tube" as we call it in the states is very clever. I made a board with lots of tiny finishing nails to keep my washed pieces elevated, but invariably I'd get finishing nails stuck to the bottoms of my work, which was easily removed but kind of a pain.
Thank you so much! I am not sure why I made hills for the edges but it just felt right, especially since I use a smaller battle mat than usual :D That sounds like a good solution as well, I think I used to balance pieces on pushpins and such but this was just easier and cheaper :D

Thank you so much Chester! Oh you will have so much fun ahead of you man! Thank you for taking the time to watch it! I love helping so comments like this just gives me conviction to push on! So thank you! :)
Hey Tomasz! Yeah the multiple colors of grass is not a necessity I would say, it's more a flavor! 🙂 Thank you so much for the nice comment and good luck with your hills! 👍
Hi very nice!!! I am making ain indoor crawling track and for the surface I will make rocks so the video gave me inspirition how to use small cutted pieces polistirene. Thanks
Turned out fantastic! I have several of your videos saved for when I eventually get back to making terrain. There's so much stuff to paint, it's hard to make time for terrain but it's one of my favorite things to do!
Love the craft videos, I am trying my hand at making my own terrain but do not have the same look as yours. I'm thinking after reviewing your video vs my skills " Less is more " as they say so im going to scrap what I have and try again. By the way I would love to see different technics on making trees in the future thank you so much for your time and God speed sir.
Thank you so much Michael! Which part of the hills went wrong? Regarding the tree videos, well I have made four videos with trees so far but I do have some left so it will come in due time! 😂 Thanks for the comment! 👍
@@DevsDice Thank you for your response, what went wrong was all of my bases warped and are not flat to stand. after Painting the bases and attaching the trees they all warped.
Great job. I want to master this...why didn't you buy a big for and cut it up and put plaster of paris and mode podge to create the same as opposed to cutting small pieces of forms and sticking them togather?
Really great video, my club doesn't have hills that look like this yet so looking to build some. The static PVA glue is supposed to improve conductivity when using a static grass applicator - where you place the probe into the glue. I can vouch that this does indeed work, especially when the area being applied is quite large - at least you don't have to move the probe as much. (Regular PVA conducts fine for a short distance, miniature bases and what not.)
Thanks for the nice comment and thanks for the info regarding the static grass applicator! I will have to play around with it a bit cause I am not super impressed - yet! :D
Do you think using cardboard instead of xps would serve as an adequate substitute? If it is covered in joint compound/filler do you think the difference will be too noticeable?
I would be somewhat careful with cardboard since it will potentially "suck up" the moisture more and potentially warp. But if the core is tight enough it should work! 👍😂
Great Stuff Leif, but Ikea and construction store? I walk my dog and pick up gravel from the side of the road from time to time. I really love these hills! Do you find they are a little small in the width and length dimensions for the gaming table?
Hahahaha! Of course! If you can find good free alternatives then by all means! For me they are good size but I can see larger flat areas being needed depending on the game! 👍😅
This is a great project! Really love the process and results. Just saw the video now, so after 2 years how are they holding up? Anything you would update with the process, and why?
Thank you kindly Russel! They are holding up well! The only change I would make it so add some paint to the Sculptamold to make sure that IF a piece of it broke off, it would not be stark white! 👍😅
Oh wow! Well I use most of their different kind of flocks, I have also used some molds and some armatures for trees. For instance in the Birch video! 👍
These look great and you've gone a great job using up scrap material, which is always a nice bonus. They look great for line-of-sight blocking terrain, but maybe a bit high for play. Thought about making a few lower ones as well?
Thank you kindly! Yeah I did some lower ones but I am also planning on making more boulders and such as scatter terrain. Also the upcoming video will feature some "lower" objects ;) Thanks again!
Dude, that came out quit nice 😊 I‘ll try it myself. A very much needed insperation and a good one too. Tak så mycket för det 😊👍🏻 Greeting from Germany 👋🏻
Thank you Luis! I think I might have bought it over amazon UK or a Swedish hobby site. Not sure to be honest! But yeah it's not cheap but good stuff for sure! :)
@@dopeyiceman I just tried that, mixing some plaster and papier mache, 50%-50% mix with some water. The thing is that even though it can be applied more or less like the "real" Sculptamold, it takes AGEs to dry. Next time I will buy some quality plaster instead of the one from the asian store (dollar/euro store?) next to my house.
So i want to make some hellfire citadel like hills with spikey things and blades ramps. What should i use? My spawn figures are starting to look good for parts and chains but i cant.
That's a complicated question where I will have to do some assumptions! So first one, I think you're looking to do something like this?: i.redd.it/9iizdu3pppn01.png Also, I think there are multiple ways you can tackle this build depending on the usual parameters or time, money and quality. A cheap solution would for me have been to the inside of a toilet roll and hot glue. Shape that into rough points, then cover it with PVA glue and add sharp small rocks. A coat of black paint with some dry-brushed grays and browns to pick out the ridges. A slightly more expensive way would be to buy a sack of pine bark, glue these into a similar shape and paint it. The most expensive way would be to add some sort of clay or sculptamold on top of this to futher bind everything together as one piece. Some ideas at least. I think ultimately everyone has their own ways to do things and I wouldn't be able to tell you exactly how do to it before I had tried it myself but that's where my mind went. Hope it helps in some way! :)
@@DevsDice its for my Conrad curze to sit on top of and look all metal as i dislike the base. Ill likely just give hime something simple so i can move him around the terrain. I was thinking hed make a very good Evil empyrion. Ill play some mastadon in the back ground as he murders a high lvl party.
Making my own rocks based on this vid, quick question, i want them to work in as many environments as possible. Considering that, how would you paint them? Mostly interested in your color choices! Great vids!
Thank you so much for your kind words Oscarlundberg6907! When it comes to that generic hills then I think I would potentially go with more greyish with some colored undertones! Hope that makes sense? 👍😊
Hahahahaha! I have no idea Briane8627! People tend to say that I am an "underrated" UA-camr so I suppose people don't share my content enough or something? Not sure, but glad this video made its way to you! 👍😅
Thank you so much but t oh no! We live and we learn right? I have even left my old ones. Might actually gift them away! Thanks again for the nice comment! :)
Good question! Not sure to be honest, might be to mix in some brown paint into the sculptamold to make double sure that no "white spots" pop up when dented. Lucky enough, that has not happened yet! 👍😅

Thank you kindly Russel! They are holding up well! The only change I would make it so add some paint to the Sculptamold to make sure that IF a piece of it broke off, it would not be stark white! 👍😅
Absolutely incredible job! Earned a subscribe from me. Thanks for sharing!
Oh wow! Thank you so much for subscribing and for watching it! I am glad you liked it! :D
These look fantastic, and are super well done. But do you feel the 'undertones' you did made any difference. I can't really tell from the video.
Thank you supervike1! Yeah the undertones do definitely make a difference in real life! 👍
I really love the song that played at the end, who is that by?
Thank you Jon! Niklas Johansson Call of the North! 👍😃
I'm not a fan of the hollow hills. but I enjoy the overall finished product. I hope to see more of your work. Subscibed.
Thank you kindly and thanks for the sub! :)
love how you used the scraps of foam i try to waste nothing i even reuse my paper towels for terrain base cover
That's awesome Stuart! 👍 What did you use the paper towels for more specifically?
@@DevsDice i use them to make a shell over packing foam for making hills and elevated mounds ect
Looks good, nice work.
Thank you so much Shane! :D
I'm a bit confused, what happened to the right angle corner if the first piece?
Not sure, but I think I switched back and forth between pieces shown here! 👍😅
You look good in sawdust!
Hahaha! Perhaps I should try that as a new "look"? :D
What are the Woodland Scenics products you use and recommend?
Fantastic video, thanks dude. They look great.
Thank you so much James! I am glad you liked it! Yeah these came out nice, which was lucky considering I made 14 at the same time! :D
i love your channel buddy, and you got new fans
Holy moly! Thank you and right back at you! Checking through your channel now! :D
@@DevsDice Thank you so much
Glad I found this one!
So am I Tommy! Glad you like it! 👍🙂
Dude, that came out quit nice 😊
I‘ll try it myself. A very much needed insperation and a good one too.
Tak så mycket för det 😊👍🏻
Greeting from Germany 👋🏻
Thanks Kevin! Please do! And nice work with the Swedish! 👍😉
Awesome! Where did you buy the Sculptamold? On Amazon seems pretty expensive
Thank you Luis! I think I might have bought it over amazon UK or a Swedish hobby site. Not sure to be honest! But yeah it's not cheap but good stuff for sure! :)
If you have a little more time on your hands you can make it yourself. Just search homemade sculptamold on you youtube.
Can we get a tour of your hobby station/room? 😁🤓
Perhaps one day when I have sorted it a bit. I will seriously consider it! Thanks for the comment Erika! :D
So i want to make some hellfire citadel like hills with spikey things and blades ramps.
What should i use?
My spawn figures are starting to look good for parts and chains but i cant.
That's a complicated question where I will have to do some assumptions! So first one, I think you're looking to do something like this?: i.redd.it/9iizdu3pppn01.png
Also, I think there are multiple ways you can tackle this build depending on the usual parameters or time, money and quality.
@@jeramiedavis6782 Sounds epic! :D
@@DevsDice yeah ill just have to listen to my audiobooks to get his voice right.
I use card board, pva glue and kitchen roll/tissue. Sometimes, if there's a lot of scrap paper, I'll go full on paper mache'
Sounds like a completely awesome solution ArtistPoet! 👍😊
@@DevsDice Cheers! Thanks for the input👍
Hi they look OK to me keep the good work up enjoy
Thank you again Anthony! 👍
How did I just run into this years later? The algorithm has been holding out on me!
Hahahahaha! I have no idea Briane8627! People tend to say that I am an "underrated" UA-camr so I suppose people don't share my content enough or something? Not sure, but glad this video made its way to you! 👍😅
i usually dont comment on youtube, but when i do, its a devs & dice video
Hahaha! 😂 Is that so? Well I am honored Christian! Thank you so much for each and every one of your comments! 👍💙💛💙
These are amazing! Now I want to throw away my old ones ^^
Thank you so much but t oh no! We live and we learn right? I have even left my old ones. Might actually gift them away! Thanks again for the nice comment! :)
@@DevsDice I might crush them and use the bits I get :D
Sure re-using is always a good option! :D
Is there anything you'd do differently 3 years on ? Ps the modge podge mix what was it
Good question! Not sure to be honest, might be to mix in some brown paint into the sculptamold to make double sure that no "white spots" pop up when dented. Lucky enough, that has not happened yet! 👍😅
