I could listen to this ALL DAY. In high school, nobody could understand the lyrics, but we all hopped around to if. Who could resist that rising bass?

This is such a cool song from 1968. Very few people react to it. I have always loved it. Desmond Dekker was a Jamaican ska, rocksteady & reggae singer-songwriter & musician. I have his cd & there are some are other good songs on it such as "007 (Shanty Town)", "It Mek", "You Can Get It If You Really Want" etc.

I remember this song very well and loved it. My dad bought it, when I was still a babe in arms, it was played in our white British home in London for years. Poor people can understand the suffering and struggle of other poor people. I remember as kids we would study the lyrics on the sleeves of singles and albums to learn the words if inspired to do so. Singing them to our friends in and out of school. I am happy to see this song being rediscovered. Music has this amazing ability to span all social strata :)

When Desmond Decker says OOOOH me Israelites! He means "hey all you slaves like me ! I sing to you." I especially love this song because I am a Jew from a multi-ethnic family.

I love this song, been a long time since hearing it.
It somehow reminds me of an 80s british song, real working class music.

Another great track, in a similar vein, is Dat, by Pluto Shervington.
Released in the early 80's, it was a completely new sound for us Brit kids, just getting into music as young adults!
Decades later, I still can't understand a word, but you just can't keep still while it's playing!! 🕺💃🕺💃

I came up in the ska scene in the 90s, so I was aware of the older classics that 3rd wave grew from, I heard it, I liked it, but I wasnt there yet. Ow at the ripe old age of 42, give me Dekker, Ellis, Gaylads, Ken Boothe, Dennis Brown, Livingston, etc...dont really listen to much 3rd wave anymore, its too hectic, but I love these golden oldies of reggae

Love this track! This was a great era for Jamaican ska and early reggae. It reminds me of another great track from this period: a ska/reggae/funk track that hit the top of the charts called DOUBLE BARREL by Dave & Ansel Collins. I highly recommend it for your consideration in a future reaction, particularly the 1971 Top of the Pops performance. I feel it possibly has one of the greatest basslines you will hear in any genre of music. Well, it makes a lot of sense with Sly and Robbie performing on The Top of The Pops with Dave and Ansel Collins. After all, they are the most legendary rhythm sections to come from Jamaica. Hope you give it a play and see for yourself.

i might be wrong but did you say brits wouldnt understand this song? it is you who needs to crawl back under your stone if your saying you have only recently heard this tune,. raygay as u call it is in fact reggae and the reggae scene didnt catch on in the states. i was nine at the time of its release and everyone bought this single on vinyl, and at school we sang and sang it including the white kids who also knew how to sing it in creole. white people over here have always liked west indian accents and west indian ska and ray gay :)

    From The Most High.
You sleep and true say you nah know me.
My chosen nation in our covenant.
Wake Up onto me and obey.
Know. I C U .... correction we C U. Mother also C U. Show respect to her. More than me and bow to her daughters.
She knows that you carry me and her seed of good.
    Abandon all evil.
For good has family values with respect.
    Ask to obtain.
Or bow out if rejected, yet give thanks for a close call.
Know us in the kjv and that we are always in you forever.
Wake Up Chosen and fear Him alone.
Please note that you have His Power and they fear us all, you male and female.
Take want you want from this but know we love you more.
You must take them down before us .
Or we will sun kissed ....
    Yah xxxx
