- Rick and Morty is back with new episodes! "Never Ricking Morty" went beyond meta. Dave explains the story train and lists the Easter eggs and references from Season 4, Episode 6.
Rick and Morty made a strong return with Season 4, Episode 6, which is Dave's favorite episode of the season so far. Never Ricking Morty has an overall framing device of the train for various tales told within.
Dave breaks down the framing of the entire episode, in which Rick and Morty bought a story train from the Citadel of Ricks. Within the story train exists a universe where the story of Rick and Morty is set on metaphorical and physical wheels. There were also plenty of Easter eggs and references in this episode, including Tammy, Bird Person, Evil Morty, Snowball, Meeseeks, a cameo from Paul Giamatti, and more.

Honestly, I think they were more taking the piss out the principles of effective creative writing in general. When you're writing professionally, you don't get to experiment with the full scope of possibilities. You have to write what will let you keep your job.

Lewis I don’t think so. I just watched a video of Dan Harmon in a GQ article that he did in May 2018 and I think it’s just exhausting for him to be constantly barked at via Twitter.
@Inna Key it's not hard to imagine though the ridiculous amount of die hard nerds who just because they're obsessed with the show think they can do the writer's jobs for them. Can't fault them for trying to get people to back off and let them write the show in their style, imagine how hard it is to come up with original ideas naturally while being nagged by thousands of Twitter geeks constantly.
Funny how R&M turned out to be the first ones to make a Virus related Joke as meta joke as is their brand.
This ep was so they could put a ton of fan favourite shit in the trailers, without having to actually make full stories that retread old ideas

I gotta say, you broke it down a little simpler for me to understand. When I first watched the episode it was so fucking hard to follow. I’ve watched it 3 more times to slowly understand it.

Dave, you’re great. I made a comment on your debut wishing Buddy would come back and I regret that now. You’re better than Buddy, who often came off as insincere, and I find your breakdowns to be more in depth and detailed. Keep up the good work!
Aww, thank you! :) I have nothing against Buddy and I wasn't trying to rail against him or anything like that. I actually think he's great at breaking the show down, it's more-so that number of comments I'd still get about it during the first half of season 4. :P

I'm definitely in the minority here but I actually really really disliked this episode. The feel of this episode for was almost "You're watching our show wrong, just shut up and like what we give you, stop looking into things." I just feel that returning after an unnecessary 5 month hiatus in the middle of a season with an episode that mocks fans of your show is kind of low.
i could agree with that, though i do think rick and morty is one of the only popular shows capable of being so meta and making their audience think. if anyone's gonna make an episode like this, it's them.

The point of the train is that it’s on a repeating circular track.

I genuinely think that scene of how Rick and Morty “end” with an evil Mr.Poopybutthole and the meeseeks, could be canon. After the season 5 finale and Mr. Poopybutthole is talking about his family, he questions if there could ever be an “evil” version of himself.

My buddy and family hated this episode. I didn’t really understand it but I thought it was funny AF. Especially the part of Jesus Christ.
They added christianity to make the shows intelligence and story potential go down to escape.

Personally I feel that the train was more representative of the train from the anime Galaxy express 999 and or subsequent variations of this title, both a film and a series. Was this even a consideration before you posted this video ? Have you heard of this anime ? Perhaps you might ask either Justin Roiland or Dan Harmon for a verification ? I am in no attempt attempting to second guess your observations, but on the same hand I'd like to know where they got the idea itself, since you brought it up and are no doubt attempting to do your best at breaking down your personal observations on this awesome show. I honestly don't know the anime Galaxy Express 999, and maybe you're right! I do my best to try and research what references they pull from (even if it's not something I'm personally aware of, like in episode 7 - finding that they pulled from the comic character "Starro", according to Dan Harmon), but it's definitely possible you're right!

@@DaveControlLive If you like early anime, it's pretty cool. Hmmm, to explain it would be difficult. A train route through the universe... Human mixed with machines, but not in the way that we might view this concept today ? Definitely stories based upon Japanese folklore, umm, old wives tales ? Sometimes gruesome, while fixed in the human condition. There's a film or 2 and a series. A young boy hooks up with this woman who helps him on his journey. His mother was killed by these half man, half machine guys. So he is traveling to a place were he can "upgrade" for free. Lot's of stories in between. If you're not an anime fan, well you might not have the patience for it. But if you do, I'd start with the film, Galaxy express 999 I think ? Maybe find it on cartoononline ? Not all is dubbed, but I think that the film might be ? Anyhow, there ya go, be well, stay safe.

I like Rick and morty but i feel the writers went way up their own ass with this episode. Cool you can de-construct a story, we get it, we’ve been getting it for the past 3 and a half seasons.
Just to make myself clear, I don’t dislike the episode cause it wasn’t what I wanted to see happen or cause it didn’t validate some dumb fan theory, I disliked it cause it wasn’t as high quality as normal. Both the plot and the jokes honestly felt stale. I don’t care what the writers do with their characters and creation as long as it’s interesting. This wasn’t interesting.
Yeah the writers are like "look we are so edgy and clever!"
