The best Land Rover ever! Too bad land rover discontinued it! They're not the Land rover it used to be! Who wants to take a luxury 80 thousand soccer mom offroading!! They would have to spend thousands fixing the damage after doing so.
So no front axle leaks, no clutch wear, no rear half shaft wear (the clunking noise), no gear box leaks, no seal failures, no rear door rust, ... Well done. Cheers
Your not, Land and Range Rovers got a bad reputation because of people that think they don't need maintenance and they just get driven into the ground. The chassis on these now old coil spring trucks is a great platform and the Buick derivative V8 is a great engine. All cars have certian issues and LR certainly is no exception but Land Rovers, Jeeps (cjs and wranglers) Nissan Patrols and Toyota Land Cruisers are all excellent off road trucks, well 20 years ago they were. The modern Jeep is pretty capable but is also pretty big, the rover family is ski lodge cars now and the land cruiser is pretty much a luxury truck too.
I bought a new Defender 110 in 1997 (I'm not in the US). It was an amazingly good car and actually got great fuel economy as it was a diesel five speed. However, it very big and SLOW.
Justin Jensen I never once mentioned a Wrangler. But, if you must got there, a 1990s Defender could easily outperform modern (even modified) Wranglers. Heck, earlier LR 110s could.
Justin Jensen I'll take a Wrangler but have a nice 3.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel installed. Would be cheaper and less risky than illegally importing a modern day Defender TDI.
The weakest factor in any Land Rover is the Rover V8 which was so ahead of it's time when Buick hobbled it together, Buick knew it was too advanced. With maintenance the Rover V8 won't leave you stranded.
With a title like “Bare Necessities”, I’m surprised Motorweek’s music man Mark Roumelis didn’t use a “Bare Necessities”-Like (ala Disney’s Jungle Book) song for this road test. If Baloo the bear from The jungle Book and/or TaleSpin could drive, this Defender would be his ride.
There is an old saying that comes from Africa.."if you want to go into the Bush take a land rover if you want to get back out take a land cruiser"..Toyota land cruiser that is..
That's a fantasy now, but if you had said Range Rover, then yes I agree. The discovery has been very reliable for a while now. Defender was also pretty reliable for a while. The Range Rover in this regard is crap.
Man I wish cars could be built this simple today without all the useless computer nonsense turbo this eco that just a plain Jane no frills off road suv.
They are reliable...is it not still in your yard...it simply ceased to drive anymore for the share desire to always be as close to you everyday...hahahahahaha
Love these Defenders, the exterior looks like something that could be marketed today.
They stopped production just this year
Haha, yeah
Such a freaking cool car
Love this vehicle in Test Drive: Offroad

Always loved these.
Gotta love these! U.S. safety regulations took them off the road new :(
I still want one.
I'm on 180000 miles and twenty one years old, nothing has broken yet on my 110. Surely I can't be the only one?

$27'900. Wow. That same model year now goes for 95K!

"The smallest tachometer in the industry" - Take that, America!
Let's just hope they bring the new-gen Defender back!

MrCarGuy20 complete bs.
why did he have to mishandle that low range shifter like that? :|
Made my eyes hurt!
RIP Defender
Looking at this , ford did a good job with the bronco

Sebastian m That hasn't stopped anyone from desiring, buying, owning or restoring them...
That's true it was the Lucas Electronics job to leave you stranded LOL

Those are so fun to drive
Can we see a 1999 Grand Cherokee Review!? *****
Expensive to maintain properly, but an excellent design. Jeeps and Land Cruisers take abuse and skipped maintenance more readily however.
This was a true Land Rover
Sorry, but having the ignition to the left of the steering wheel has nothing to do with the car being from a right-hand-drive country.
fluffycatsdad Sure it does. It is the same steering column that was used in the right-hand-drive model. They just mounted it on the left side! Lol! 😂
Porsches on left hand drive have the ignition on the left. Right hand drive the keys on the right.
In Porsches case it has to do with the Le mans start.
2MDSPORT TUNING Wrong. I've lived in the UK and currently live in Japan, both of which are right hand drive. Ignition is on the right.
I like this more than a jeep, dislikes are from 5th generation discovery owners who think they can do much better with it!
2:10 I don’t think the center diff was locked rear tire not turning.
What? The centre diff will do nothing to make both rear wheels spin, only a rear locker would do that.
Wait these were sold state side?
you can keep the 110 i always wanted a yellow 90. So overpriced now you can shove it up there.
MotorWeek is now doing what Bajabusta/TestDriveJunkie did all this time; do nothing but upload old MotorWeek episodes!
good guy bajabusta :) they should hire him
I was just thinking about him! I get so pissed that he's gone now, I would be in here for HOURS watching his videos.
***** check him out on fb Testdrivejunkie or his website by the same name
I have! It's not the same as UA-cam, but at least it's something and he hasn't completely left the Internet.
Much better than the current Defender.
haha the 4.0 amc inline six made more HP and had almost the same torque
I would look for a 1997 Defender 90. At least that one has an automatic transmission.
fun car
remember when the american west wasn't constantly bathed in wildfire smoke
There is an old saying that comes from Africa.."if you want to go into the Bush take a land rover if you want to get back out take a land cruiser"..Toyota land cruiser that is..
You guys should put on from a bronco or blazer!
100% Land Rover. Has a Buick engine...
That mpg is terrible!
500 imported a year? That is a joke compared to Jeep sales. It would cost $53,000 in 2021 dollars!
interlacing ow
This is better than the Jeep Wrangler, in my opinion....
I would still pick the Wrangler over this Defender. It has just as much history as the Defender.
dude reminds me of homer simpson
A Land Rover will take you anywhere, a Toyota will take you anywhere and get you home.
That's a fantasy now, but if you had said Range Rover, then yes I agree. The discovery has been very reliable for a while now. Defender was also pretty reliable for a while. The Range Rover in this regard is crap.
unless you put the Toyota in mud hahaha
With that..."hill climbing torque"...mount Everest...here i come! roflmao!
Bobby Olson as in it has exactly enough torque to get up a hill
until they break....again.. and again...and again..
0101010 010101 and again mate!
That takes some time for these. A Range Rover breaks right of the bat, it has very poor reliability. The discovery is very good in reliability.
GhettoMist Except tor the fact it has the same exact motor and drive train as a RR at least in the usa
Man I wish cars could be built this simple today without all the useless computer nonsense turbo this eco that just a plain Jane no frills off road suv.
what if dog's couldn't eat meat in heaven so many of them chose to stay here.
I'll keep my 94 wrangler because I can really go anywhere
+RedNeckRusterTales i agree. cant go wrong with that 4.0
Well so can this.... Different strokes for different folks
Looks so cool, so minimalistic, I like that! Too bad they are not reliable.
They are reliable...is it not still in your yard...it simply ceased to drive anymore for the share desire to always be as close to you everyday...hahahahahaha
Ford copied this design for the new bronco.
It's the only car in the universe that is pure shit but everybody copes with (incl myself) just because of how cool it is.
