Grew up with thése in Namibia as a child - thís one's exterior "cage" looks horrendous though and must make it even more top heavy. They were good on sand and never rusted, but reliability was not as good as the Toyota Land Cruiser.
I've never seen this dashboard before. With the aircon vents integrated on the dashboard. It looks neat. Looks like it is only for the North American market.
This might just be the first MotorWeek Retro Review that I have ever watched with a vehicle that has been described as having enough rear seat headroom for a giraffe!!!!! While rarely seen by Americans, this is essentially the same vehicle that has been the vehicle of choice for adventurers the world over since 1948.
Think this interior is spartan? I used to travel in a friend's 1976 Australian assembled model and someone fitted a Holden 186 inline six cylinder ans ran it on LPG. It only had a top speed of around 80 k.p.h. It also featured the opening vent flaps under the windscreen (or windshield!), omitted here. This thing is ridiculously luxurious for what thus was intended for. Carpets?? Come on, they are a mud slinger.
The fact that this Defender 110 did not have an available automatic is absolutely ridiculous. They could have sold more if it had one. If I had one, I would have replaced the whole drivetrain with a GM crate V8 engine and aftermarket automatic transmission.
the 110 & Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser would be my choice of rough country 4x4, my dad had a FJ when i was a kid i loved riding in it. for the cost of 110 i'd rather have VOLVO 6X6 C304 what we're working toward
I had a 2000 DII, Landies are awesome vehicles, electronics are junk but as far as 4x4s go best stock off road vehicles by far, makes jeep look like their name needs changed to joke.
Jakob Holgersson oh I think it's totally badass but if I had to choose I'm putting my money with Toyota. Not going to lie really want a camper back defender though.
You can't compare a land cruiser to a Defender. People never look at these things from a worst case scenario. If you were stuck in the middle of the desert with a broken down Defender and a broken down land cruiser which do you think you are more likely to be able to fix and drive yourself back to safety in? And don't say "well it wouldn't happen, Toyota 's never break down" because I've been in the motor industry all my life and now work for 1 of the biggest diesel manufacturers in the world and my response would be "bollocks!" You cannot build a perfect engine that never breaks down.
They are great off-road, but for someone that only uses it as transportation, I can't imagine too many choices that would be worse. Who would pay that kind of money for a miserable driving experience if they never take it off-road?
justsomeguytoyou Hummer H1 and Mercedes G Wagen are its only peers. Clumsy street legal adapted military vehicles that are valueable and highly sought after.
Truth Robot maybe not? I moved to Northern CA 3 years ago and its so strange when I see one in a city so clean and shiny. I come from a rural area of the UK and these trucks are the back bone of my country. It will be interesting to see how the new one holds up
petayV8 There are so few of these in the US that their price is driven up to the point that it's hard to justify beating on one off-road, especially when there are so many cheaper alternatives (Jeeps, pick-up trucks, etc.).
It doesn't matter if it's a Defender 90/110 or a Range Rover.. a 3.9 Land Rover engine is a turd. The diesel land rovers were great, the standard 4x4 features were nice, a 1992 XJ Cherokee could be had for half the price and about 15k in air lockers, winch, re-gearing, 6 inch lift 33s would put wheel and out last a defender in every way except rust, properly treat the XJ for rust every year and it's simply the best. XJ is highly underrated.
I will argue this !! Once I figured out why the 3.5, 3.9, 4.0, 4.6 Motors kept breaking down, Now I have ZERO ISSUES !! There is a secret !!!. My D/D has 135,000 miles on it now, And I'm getting ready to drive it from here in Florida to Bosie IDAHO in a couple months !!. I'd trust my Range Rover Classic over every other vehicle I own (15 Vehicles) except my 1996 Dodge Cummins Dually !!. But it's a Cummins !!!. Don't knock a Range Rover motor !! Their just as good as any other motor !!
racingracingracingracing . I can't just blast out what I've learned . I make money off these things. I do repairs for several people that also own the older Land Rovers. I will say this tho. Use OEM parts !!. Use the Correct oil that the Dealer calls for !!. And Keep up with the routine maintenance !!. It's really that simple !!!!. . Good Luck.
racingracingracingracing Well. If I blasted on UA-cam what I've figured out about them. Then it would no longer be a secret, Would it ????. So NO. I'm not gonna tell some "Random" Guy !!!. And how I market my business is not your concern !!!!. I'm sorry you believe I should tell you, But the fact is, I know what causes these older Motors to overheat and Blow Up !!!!. And if you PAY ME, I will repair the problem !! But still not gonna TELL you what I did !!!. So far, EVERYONE OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS has been SUPER HAPPY with this arrangement !!!. So How you feel doesn't bother me !!!. And YES, Routine Maintenance is a HUGE DEAL with the older Rovers !!!.
Dropped my kids off at school the other day, saw a brand new 2020 Defender driven by some mom with 20” wheels. I laughed, my kids laughed, my Jeep Gladiator laughed. Times changed and I’m happy my Jeep still has its roots.
Meanwhile LR is owned by who now? LOL. Happy my 2001 XJ and other Jeeps are still driving around to this day. Cant say the same for LR or RR. Shit cant even keep brand new ones out of the shop, thats a proven fact. Happy my Jeep has very little to or nothing to do with Fiat.
The Land Rover was developed on a Willy's jeep chassis after WW2. So it, just like the FJ landcruiser, nissan patrol and the Mitsubishi knock off jeep are all derivatives and not original. The Jeep Is and always will be superior.
Wrangler to Defender.. anything you can do I can do betterrr! No you can't, no u can't no u cannnn't! Def: I can cost more and break down more oftenn! W: Yes u can, yes u can, yess u cannn! 😄
These were/are sooo expensive in the US!
you can't get one under a 100k now most are well over that
it's like Jeep's over here in England..i cry when i see how cheap they are on the forums compared to over here.
What a beast! These are all you see in Africa and they run forever. Excellent review MW!
I'm 23 years old and I've never seen a Land Rover Defender 110 in person, but read about them in various books and magazines when I was a kid.
Kevron Harris 😂😂😂😂😂in Europe are every where..I m Italian
our family have one
HAHAHA YOU IDIOT ARE YOU BLIND? THEYRE MORE COMMON THAT RAPISTS
Son.. you haven't liived..
The Defender 110 could seat 9 people and in today's dollar would cost $74,600. Awesome?
Nene Valenzuela ahahaha wtf is that.a Ferrari??
that's how much we paid for ours...
It is awesome so much presence. External safari cage!
Somebody at my fancy private school had one of these 110s in the 1990s
Grew up with thése in Namibia as a child - thís one's exterior "cage" looks horrendous though and must make it even more top heavy. They were good on sand and never rusted, but reliability was not as good as the Toyota Land Cruiser.
the only land rover worth having

I love motorweek, im still waiting for the 2000 Celica review guys, please :)))

Reminds me of an episode of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom!
Those shiny black wheel arches though -
It won’t be here long after us, not with that 3.9 motor it won’t. The turbo diesel will be here forever.
This is still so cool.
The fact that this Defender 110 did not have an available automatic is absolutely ridiculous. They could have sold more if it had one. If I had one, I would have replaced the whole drivetrain with a GM crate V8 engine and aftermarket automatic transmission.
I don't want one 💪🏾 💪🏾 I don't want one
Wild kingdom with Marlon Perkins had this.
Doug demuro just entered the chat
Still bad ass today and super expensive to get still today.
Best 4x4 on the planet
The H1 is much better.
Until you remember it was made by British Leyland
The ultimate beach car for Yuppies.

I Want the 2022 110 V8.
These things are $20k - $150k online.
My friend convert to Toyota Hiace 2.5 turbo diesel engine
I guess "half a thousand" was supposed to sound cooler than just saying 500.
I had a 2000 DII, Landies are awesome vehicles, electronics are junk but as far as 4x4s go best stock off road vehicles by far, makes jeep look like their name needs changed to joke.
Casette stereo dude
Land cruiser, so much better in every way for so much less money
Jakob Holgersson oh I think it's totally badass but if I had to choose I'm putting my money with Toyota. Not going to lie really want a camper back defender though.
sqhatr We owned a Land Cruiser when I was a kid. Very dependable never stranded us or broke down. Ours was well maintained.
rabit818 working on building up an fj62 with a turbo diesel. They just don't make trucks like that anymore.
Jakob Holgersson lmaooo

Nice video thanks! 😀
Its funny how Americans baby these and don't put them to work. Why own one?

then again i live in England and hate my Wrangler getting dirty ;-)
$74k in today's market is about on par for the cost of today's plastic 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder SUV's.
What SUVs are you referring to...?

DiabloDrift I agree! I love my 2001 Sport!
Oh yeah, I just love a unibody. Thats why people would rather modify a Toyota, much more reliable even to a Jeep.

When you decide to tow your barbie trailer. The gladiator will split its frame in half. That thing is a fiat piece of crap.

OY VEY
Camel Torphy
Shit, i'll take one..
The Toyota Landcruiser (original, amazon & troopy) obliterates the Land Rover vehicles.
Sadly the new model were used as Mums vehicle or a luxury drive. Not rugged like old Land Cruiser
That's BS
@caged bird Then you guessed incorrectly.
Lol! Speaks the person who's never driven a Land Rover.
The Land Rover was developed on a Willy's jeep chassis after WW2. So it, just like the FJ landcruiser, nissan patrol and the Mitsubishi knock off jeep are all derivatives and not original. The Jeep Is and always will be superior.
