Think About It, do you like learning the weird science and history behind geek culture?
Come back for new videos every wednesday.
Remember that Christopher Eccleston Dr Who episode where they visit satellite 9 and the contestants on game shows are killed when they get evicted?
I do. It that were happening in real life I'd just fire a nuke up there and rid Earth-space of the menace.
Haha, I can just imagine someone nicely asking the president of the US for the nuclear launch codes to strike the daleks.
While your main point about the similarities of what he's saying and those two episodes of Doctor Who still stands, 1) It was Satellite 5, not 9. and 2) like I said, your point still stands, since everyone *thought* they were being killed, BUT they weren't being killed directly, it was actually a trans-mat beam that the daleks installed, but they were then killed and used to make more daleks so yeah they still died lol
***** sorry its been years since I watched it haha
Yeah I thought of that while I was watching
The idea of people wanting gameshow contestents to play with their lives is an interesting, disturbing, and not alltogether unprecedented thought.
Watching people risk their lives was a passtime for many people in Rome, and we aren't particularly more civilised than the romans were... we just have better tech.
In western cultures especially, audiences are drawn to graphic depictions of violence, meyhem and death, and as time goes on it needs to be more and more "realistic" to be accepted. What happens when fake death no longer satisfies the masses.
The big difference is that in the Roman Colloseum, the people risking their lives were slaves and criminals. The Romans didn't see them as humans - here in the west, however we see things differently, but human choice is god. I wonder if there will ever be a day when game show contestants are risking their lives for the entertainment of the masses and we rationalise it by saying "it was their choice to sign up."
That's a disturbing thought. But I'm sure most people won't want to watch a snuff film or in this case a snuff show.
There's a difference, though. People get excited when they see another person performing dangerous stunts - that's why escape artists and other daredevils are so popular. A Snuff film is simply a murder that is recorded - there is no inherent excitement there.
However, imagine a gameshow similar to fear factor where contestants (who willingly sign up) have to navigate a room filled with rattlesnakes. The idea wouldn't be to actually kill the contestants, but rather put contestants in genuinely perilous situations. We have brushed that idea before with shows like "Survivor" where people are left on an island with only what they can carry off the boat in one trip. Not to mention the reality TV show mentioned in this video where the contestant had to survive for a year.
Corporations are always looking for ways to make more money with small investment. Reality TV is always pushing the boundary of morality. I would not be surprised if shows start getting more and more dangerous in pursuit of ratings. Frankly, if you move the bar slowly enough... no one will even notice it has moved until it's too late.
Lucky Egg My main point was that most people wouldn't want to watch some Death Race 2000 stuff. But the way your putting it then yes, people would watch.
Yea
I'm surprised you didn't talk about video games with flashing imagery and how that can cause seizures.
Kristian Niss That last one falls under the category of stupidity.
Laff700 They all fall under stupidity.
If you're prone to seizures, don't play games that induce seizures. MYSTERY SOLVED
XenoSpyro except that all games put the seizure warnings, despite not having seizure triggers, so you have to play the games to know what ones will give you seizures, and then you get a seizure.
Why would you have to play the game to know it's seizure inducing if "all games put the seizure warnings"?
XenoSpyro because a lot of games don't induce seizures and different people with different types and levels of epilepsy are triggered by different things, usually to do with certain colors or lights.
Ots people like this who dont have self control that ruims video games for us and makes the media treat us like freakish serial killers. :/
***** pro gamer gate sexists? Maybe you want to actually listen to actual gamergate supporters, not, as you say, their "loudest members." Don't be a hypocrite.
Grizzlysol Doooown boy. Have a salmon.
If a game that could potentially kill you was ever put out, this video has rid me of the doubt that people would buy it. Heck, that may even become an advertising point. Consequently, I'm now thinking that the idea of a hardcore mode that wrecks the player's system on death is significantly less far fetched. Perhaps a Septette for the Dead Princess black midi would do the trick? I hear the 13.9 million mix is especially devastating, and if we mess with java a bit, I really need to stop thinking about that.
The deaths that were mentioned were all linked to either addiction or stupidity, the game itself was not the cause of death. Flashing lights on the other could cause a death but that situation doesn't come up very often either. Though one creative team attached a pump too the controllers rumble feature and when it would vibrate it would draw blood, that technology could lead to death if not properly monitored but so far all testing has been done in complete supervision. So really as it stands games can not cause death. Only stupidity is the real killer.
Maybe if it fell on the floor, then I slipped on it and slid along the floor before falling out the window and being run over by a tank.
Sounds like self-control or a lack of common sense is the real culprit here. I don't think video-games have any direct effect toward such outcomes. You could argue that they act as a sort of catalyst, or rather a means to exercise these "qualities." But note that ,as I implied, this is the arguement I hold for video-games. Games in general... that's another story.
No video game has ever caused a death. Stupidity has cause all the ones show here. People wanting actual death in a video game? I don't know if that would ever actually happen on anything more than a crackhead cult level. Good video Dylan.
Japaneese version of pokemon red/blue #lavendertown
***** lol it was one of the reasons my mom never let me play Pokemon when I was little. The other being that she thought Pokemon meant "Pocket Demons" and that you were collecting demons as your friends etc....
***** Exactly! The phrase/saying/wisdom "I am a gamer not because I have no life, but because I choose to have many.", is exactly why I play video games. I can be anything from an Elven Healer to a One Man Army in an exo suit to a member of an Elite SWAT Team WITHOUT dying for realzies. No way I would ever play a game where I would die IRL if I died in game (barring a SAO type situation in which I didn't know until too late). Also GAMER is an amazing movie! Gerard Butler is the best.
Joe Fisher imagine a dark souls game where you die irl.
Better not fuck up those butt pokes.
some games can cause epileptic seizures, I know that's kind of treading the line but could kill someone.
Even the idea that it causes violence is subjective, ive only ever played violent games and im like a freekin buhdist!
I know that every time I marathon Tetris, I develop this insatiable urge to stack things up with a narrow space to one or the other side. It's a real problem.
If a video game can push you over the line between life and death, you are all-but-certainly very close already, both physically and mentally, to the point where any number of other things could kill you with enough bad luck. Kinda like how game-inspired violence works.
Dylan, this would be an interesting video for you to make. How about you ask yourself what the non-gamers were doing in the plot-span of SAO? Where were they? Would they ever find out that their friends and family were dying from a video game? What were they doing about it? Was there anything to do about it?
If I'm at my house, and my child is playing a video game, and they don't come out of their room for a very long time (not too long that they would die of starvation, or dehydration, or sleep deprivation, any of that shit), I get worried and go up to see what they're doing. I find them dead. I want to know what the fuck happened to my child. I'm gonna go and ask my friends about their children, or nephews, or nieces. If they say that they died, I'm gonna recruit them to investigate. We're gonna call the police, find out what's going on. We're going to demand answers from the creator of the game. We find that he's playing the same game. We would question the logic of him risking his own life and not see the actual deaths in real life (as we would not yet understand that his own gear isn't rigged with the same brain frying mechanism), we would get a famous MLG pro to test the game. He cannot communicate with us? We remove his gear. The frying mechanism activates. He dies. We find out how everyone is dying. The creator of the games is a murderer, and by extension of ruining the safety of video gaming, a cyberterrorist. The only way out for him is death. We remove his gear, expecting it to kill him. It doesn't. We learn what he's doing, and then execute or arrest him. Then we get a hacker, fix the server, allow everyone to log out safely.
shooting a loud, automatic, infinite ammo modded assault rifle in a game is a great stress reliever for me!
There was a woman who played Farmville back in its peak so much, she neglected her baby and when it cried for attention the woman got mad and shook it death.
On another note, similar to the man committing suicide by virtual character rejection, some people may end up with the same fate if he or she comes across a similar situation in a game, is death of a parent, friend or an accident etc. More so if they share the same name as the real life counterpart, the player may have an emotional breakdown and kill themselves
What is that song's (background theme's) name at around 4:00?
I've heard it on a lot of channels.. but i have no clue where it comes from....
The criminals use that as an excuse, they are just crazy.
This is one of those mom news articles.

Oh my god I love you.
Hey Dylan! I commented on your last video about adding more graphics, and I definitely saw more in this video! Thanks for replying!
Also, congrats on improving video editing skills, you are really polishing your style! A THUMBS UP for you.
Once my brother beat me in Garfield Kart so I snapped his DS in half and threw it in the sink. And they say video games don't cause violence.
"watch this with a friend". Eeemm...can't, it's not so easy to have a friend over at all. :(
"They're sitting too long. These l337 gamers shouldn't unplug their Wii" *Guy dies on Fit* "Well.....I guess gamers are just boned."

5:15 basically botw eventide island in a nutshell
I don't know about you guys, but at 1:42 I cringed violently, immediately got up, and did push-ups for the rest of the video...
im waiting for the first vr heart attack
I think this is just completely insane, but I don't doubt that will exist this kind of thing.
Video games can be just as mentally addicting as any drug. ANYTHING with a dopamanergic feedback response (anything that makes you feel good) can cause addictive tendencies. Too much of anything is a bad thing, like water. You are ~75% water but if you drink more than your body can metabolize and you will overdose. Yep, Overdose on water is possible.
Long story short, the only way a videogame could kill you, and I mean the videogame itself not dying by playing for too long or because of a fight with a player caused by the game, would be like the POLYBIUS story. You know, flashy colors and subliminal messages causing players to die in attacks (if afected by the colors) or suicide (if afected by the messages).
Oooh this sounds like a fun movie premise! But research has actually shown that subliminal messages and hypnotism can't make people do something they would be totally against normally, such as kill themselves when they weren't naturally suicidal. It can encourage or discourage behavior. "Suggest" is really the term most often used.
People have in the past have enjoyed playing or risking peoples lives for sport, to make it more entertaining for the audience and make the "player" fight harder. (Think Rome)
I cannot say for the future, but its plausible. They would have to amend a few laws before then though... It would however be interesting for it to be life risk only for criminals.
WOOHOO SAO!!!
"Completely insane."
Insane! sure I use games to escape real life, but I don't want a permanent escape.
In Rome they had the Colosseum so what's stopping us from wanting death game shows
Video games don't make people violent, but they sure do make people stupid.
I can easily see a time when televised gladiatorial games or game show which you have to risk you're life become a thing & while it may never happen on TV it may find a home on streaming platforms. And ppl will risk their lives for fame & or money as we see ppl do it today for likes or friends on FB. Ad ti be quite honest I think I may have some morbid interest in seeing a gladiatorial game then again I don't want anyone to die for my entertainment.
the idea of having a vidiogame where you have the potential of dying in real life IS insane. unfortunately people are bat shit bonkers.
thank you for the warning!! More youtubers should do that!!

Yes, I believe some people would want to see others play for their lives on a reality show, it would be a disgusting, morbid and fascinating topic to go viral on social media. I'm sorry, if I seem so matter of fact but, if one keeps watching stuff like the I.D. network all day the more it's craved. It's insane to expect people to not be affected by what they constantly consume when they eat bad, it's the same principal with what you feeding you brain, the stuff you constantly entertain ourselves with. So I feel It wouldn't be farfetched to see a macabre reality show emerge any day now, that could kill it's participants. Everyone would be tuning in, The horror lover's, little blue haired grandma's, tweens ect.' The religious would be in uproar, the faint at heart would be curious. The huge networks like ABC, NBC, FOX ect would test pilots episodes and secure deals, Netflix, to Amazon would opt to create their own reality nightmare series and cable stations like HBO would do the same. Eventually we'd would be drowned in these savage shows, and soon seeing people die in real life wouldn't bother us after awhile. History would be repeating itself on a large scale. Blood lust sports where men had to fight to their deaths sometimes against lions and other beasts were a crowd favorite in ancient Rome. And No, I don't welcome this reality.
I dont think that we will ever see gameshows that directly have contestants risk their lives. The people i have known that watch those sadistic reality shows tend to be in their late 40s and older. None of the gen xers nor millenials i know watch those shows, so i believe the demand will start to fall off and we won't get to such an extreme in reality tv. As for video games killing people, people die in all sorts of ways, it's not surorising that a few have something to do with a video game.
I did major damage to my heart a few years back due to a suicide attempt. Now I can't play certain games because I get so anxious I get crushing chest pain. Not a good sign to say the least. I can totally believe that these games can kill.
Why are you not talking about all the clever stuff I've commented at the end of your videos? #shotthroughtheheart
I play video games to escape reality, so why would I want some thing as realistic as death in a game.
You like, or at least know what SAO is.
