Wow, this went deep and really got me! Thanks so much for the probably best podcast. From a former bike pro, psychologist, prone to depression and thankful for such empathy in a a very personal talk of 2 awesome guys. Impressed!
I almost lost my life three years ago March.. If I'd not been a fit cyclist, I'd be dead. Months into the recovery, I could finally begin riding again. It was abysmal at first, 10 min on a flat bike path. I still couldn't work (contractor) so I just rode more and more each day. Riding was the thing that literally saved my life, and then the thing that keeps me feeling as far away from that fucking hospital bed as I can get. It's not hyperbole, what the bike means to some of us. Go on Dylan. Dylan's info videos, Bonk Bros, Ignition. I listened to all that stuff thru my recovery. Anything that built my focus on fitness and the bike...
It takes courage to give an interview like that! Dylan, thanks for being open and honest and in a roundabout way, relatable. That’s awesome you were able to achieve so much in amongst the adversity!
Appreciate Dylan’s story and honesty. I can somewhat relate. A break up was the impetus for me to start running to clear my head and battle the despair, leading me to finishing my first marathon.
DJ, I am 100% with you about not stopping on rides. You ride way longer time and distances than I ever do, but still, I hate it when people I am with want to stop. Just ride. Drink coffee later on your own time.
Great interview. I have followed Dylan for quite a while now. The major take-aways for me are that he has reached a new level this past year and genetically may be a the top of his abilites. That with his age of 30, I am curious to see what he can do next year.
Everything in this is great - I really appreciate your opening up on the mental health side. And I feel you on gas stations and coffee rides. I hate stopping on rides - while I will occasionally stop to refill on long rides on hot days to refill bottles or buy a candy bar, I hate coffee stops. On occasion I'll do a group ride with a big mid-ride stop, but it drives me crazy.
Thanks for the interview! I hate stopping on rides too... I used to live in Boulder and still go up there to ride gravel, but some of my favorite routes in the state are near Monument, Pueblo, and Trinidad
DJ, I take so much crap for saying, "I hate stopping." I've now copied this video from this point and am sending it to all those that razz me on this point!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the answer! I hope to see you soon. Cheers!
Impressive results while navigating a tough 2024! BTW, I once heard that the brain chemistry when a relationship ends is identical to the death of someone close to you. The only difference is that the corpse is still walking around!😀 Keep keeping your chin up Dylan.
Heat Acclimation year round now for marginal gains.. Nice, pod and nice to see Dylan not shy away. As for peaking, the older you get the bigger the engine just keep on the VO2 work and your lack of sprinting. 😁
When I was 12 I had a severe reaction to Amoxal that put me in hospital for two weeks, a rash or blisters all over my body, inside and out, it was painful to urinate, eyes closed up, I was lucky not to go blind or death according to the Dr's, to this day I'm advised not to take Amoxal (of course) or any Penicillan. I came out of hospital very weak. Sounds similar to what Dylan had but maybe he got off lightly. I'm with Dylan as to not liking to stop on a ride, a coffee ride is just two shorter rides, I carry all my nutrition, even carry 5 bottles to avoid stopping, only stop for pee stops, short as possible. As for gains that Dylan can find, rejig your program to fit in sprint training, twice a week, every week, all year round (I've said this so many times, good to see he actually did a few sprints in yesterdays ride, he needs to keep that up)!
I have come to the conclusion overtraining can be risky to ones health . I have seen it personally with autoimmune responses . Stress on the body can lead adaptation but it also can lead to prolonged inflammation that the body can react to in negative ways . I think we can correlate Dylan's hospital stay with possibly overtraining and mental stress from his break up . The thing about overtraining you may not catch it till it's to late
Dylan, imo you have a reaction to amoxicillin. I can’t take it as an antibiotic anymore and there have been a few times I have had other issues where I have taken prednisone and that has actually helped my skin clear up.
Dylan is a great guest. Kudos to him for putting himself out there and showing how mental health affects athletes. Excellent episode.

This was a great interview! Thanks for inviting Dylan back and for diving into a different side of him we don’t see as often.

Great episode, also really like your MDH stuff. Really has that on my radar these days.

Was lucky enough to meet and ride with him at Hains in DC and he couldn’t have been a nicer guy.

Brutal story Dylan, it takes time for sure

Heat training popularity is increasing with the ultramarathon crowd... Sodium bicarbonate, and higher carbohydrate consumption too

Nice
I don't like stopping either. ...for the same reason.
If I miscalculated on fluids/food mtn dew and snickers is great mid-ride food
what is that hoodie you're wearing???
does this chace guy have a IG?
Keto for the next (big) gain!

This is exactly what I thought when Dylan talked about his medication and its side effects. My own experience is the same.
Dylan: Why post your findings for others to benefit from? Stealth is better!
Its his business and the advantage is secret for 1-2 races
