Protectionism is needed in some sense. South Korea is a great example. The country couldn't compete with any foreign companies after the horrific Korean war. So the government imposed high tarrifs on imports while investing in domestic companies so that they can grow enought to compete with foreign companies. And it did really work
It's funny because most country has some form of protectionism. Even if you are allowed to set up shop at a country. If the other firms don't accept or do business with you. It is almost guaranteed you are going to fail.
For example, if KFC decided to set up shop Vietnam and most businesses disapprove of it. Lets say chicken farmers who had most dealings of local businesses, decided not to sell to KFC corp. Now KFC has to import chicken from another place. It get hit by import tariffs and the chicken that arrives at Vietnam isn't even fresh compare to local businesses.
Over the years most countries have been doing some form of protectionism while at the same time promoting globalization of their goods and services. The issue is each country's business scene is it own ecosystem. If a foreign company comes into the country, the business scene will have to ask questions like these: If KFC comes in with their new Texas style BBQ chicken, will that promote local sales of chicken? Will that also increase US tourism to Vietnam because of familiarity of taste? Certain foreign companies do compliment the business scene while others are just straight up competitors.

Unfortunately there is a naivity here. When you say ‘governments and companies must work together…’, that’s what is happening now to such an extent that most western governments, especially in the US are in the hands of the billionaire class e.g. big oil.
This video is arguing for the merging of state and corporate power. Globalism -as presented by this video - is inherently elitist and anti-democratic. It argues that peoples economic woes can be solved by placing even greater power in the hands of the very same people responsible for those woes.
I hate this. Why is production and economic growth the goal? Why isn't improving the quality of life of all people the goal? "Retrain workers", just emphasis that human beings are not what this video cares about, but production and profit that workers can produce for the wealthy.
You are aware that improving profitability and growth increases the quality of life for employees and the population as a companies supply chain also pays other employees. To top it off, companies have to pay tax in many developed countries. The more your companies earns, the more tax you pay. This improves roads, healthcare, police and fire services. Need I mentioned the other things taxes provide thanks to the “evil capitalist companies”.

The carbon footprint of producing raw materials in one country, assembling in another country, and selling in yet another county makes the environment pay the price. And while development in many poor countries is welcomed to provide jobs, the lack of environmental regulations and the corruption inherent in business and politics, leads it so that the poor suffer even greater with pollution while earning slave wages. The entire world suffers when the environment is destroyed.

Just compare the wages of globalized jobs with local craftsmen jobs if your opinion about Globalisation is not settled .
In a small system the one who breaks the rules is easily identified, and can hold accountable for that.
Human nature is to overtake his /her competitors, just for the own advantage. Where a secure social system is missing there is no commitment of the individual to act fair. It's like the jungle. The believe in globalisation has led to elimination of the middle class and the drop of wages in general. What makes one believe the intensification of this system would improve their status quo ?
Idk whatever Trump is doing it's working. They called him crazy for saying he could get a 3% increase. He got a 4.2%.
Consumerism. This is what caused the 4.2% growth.
Trump did nothing. He gave us NAFTA 2.0 instead of getting rid of it altogether.

Our Canadian city has turned into a dystopia over the last 40yrs. Mass homelessness, drug addiction is rife.
We should make sure the domestic industries of poorer countries are stabile before making trade with them and not try to out compete them with our own products. Easier said than done though because mega corporations care more about selling their products than about the welfare of people around the globe.

It's the greedy tops of companies do not have to pay fair wages to educated/experience/skilled labor jobs. Construction in particular. It's not valued and they just pay dirt wages and quality suffers. But inspections and quality control helps ensure buildings don't collapse before they are done. But in other countries they do collapse. This is a new discovery of what this problem is called. Thanks for making this video. It's only going to get worse for a bit then come back home in 30 years and cycle again.
THE VIDEO IS ALMOST OK..USA was totally open and zero tarif, to every country , the NAFTA agreement was devanting to USA, EU, was completely felon with the UN payments..meanwhile USA paid it all, until Trump applied some tarifs , and regulated the crazy migrations; for the other side globalization abolish countries , goverments, and if you felt abandonen by your goverment..with globalization you will need a lot luck to get someone to listen to you..

Since the beginning of recorded history, tarriffs are used to make sure the government's laws are not disadvantaging it's own citizens. For instance, in the U. S., we have lots on expensive environmental taxes. Mexico has much lower taxes. If Mexico can ship goods the the U. S. without paying a coinciding tariff that covers the difference in taxes paid by the manufacturer, then only companies operating in Mexico will survive, by design. This issue has been around since Egypt and before.
It's not rocket science. The U. S. Constitution gives the job of regulating international commerce to Congress. They are not doing their job. Free trade, is the failure to regulate. That's why the U. S. Industrial base is disappearing under international free trade agreements. The proof is in the pudding. It's history now, and no longer a debatable subject.
I’ve read Adam Smith and Thomas Sowell’s Marxism and the Mickinsey article which this videos pulled data from and I’m also a CFA charterholder. The article calculated the 70% flat/falling house holds incomes using real income. Real income is a proxy for purchasing power which is what is meant by rising tides. Thus tells you nothing of the matter to do with rising tides. Also, the article goes on to state that this figure was effected largely by the 2008 recession which is a outlier in the data. When there is an outlier in data stats are called inconsistent and biased therefore erroneous! McKinsey has an agenda and is cherry picking data to found an entirely misleading argument that ultimately stifles equality. They do this to look like the good guy but in reality they are the bad doers. Don’t rely on others to form your opinions.
Your argument doesn't really add up. Regardless of your "qualifications", the simple fact is that average spending power has gone down continually since 2008. You could easily base this on calculating a simple ratio if average incomes to average costs of staple foods, fuel, electricity, gas, home prices, etc. Very clearly, a growing percentage of Americans cannot envision upward economic mobility. The mere ability to sustain one's self in one's current situation isn't a good barometer of socioeconomic equality or inequality, the point of which is to gauge social STABILITY. If enough people feel the system is unfair and rigged, this leads to social instability and rises in crime and risk of uprising and revolution. The primary goal of many media corporations today is to do PR for the shareholders they share with other corporations. They emphasize and deemphasize as needed to keep people "feeling" that inequality isn't an issue.

I think the worst thing about globalization is the destruction of culture. Instead of gaveling unique cultures for each countries, they all mix and form on abomination of a culture. Best example is architecture. Instead of reflecting the country’s history and culture, the modern buildings all look the same around the world

Well presented. The simple animations were a nice touch. That said, I wish there were more presented on strategies to fight the negative effects of globalization. Some of the best ideas were not even mentioned; for example Global Basic Income (aka "World Basic Income"), where a world-wide basic income (or "allowance") is internationally established and provided to ALL humans, across the entire planet. The idea may seem far-fetched now, but even the tiniest start would have a profound impact that would seriously fight the negative effects of globalization and inequality.
The money owned my the universal govt. will be used up within months, all will be the same and the rich with production lines will fetch in more money. So, back to square 1

There is no historical examples of Globalation or redistribution of wealth raising all boats. We have seen plenty of examples of fragile supply line and a lack of a local manufacturing causing issues. I would suggest the Japans low crime rate and high life span is directly tide to their zero immigration and lack of diversity

This video makes some really good points. Globalization as a concept, is definitely constructed upon potentially groundbreaking principles. However, while it seeks to bring equality to less developed countries, it truly limits the ability for those living on a minimum income to climb the social ladder.
How to solve the problems of globalization?

First bit I agreed with but the rest made me think why this hasn’t been done already? I think countries weren’t harsh enough with their isolationist policies. I think Wall Street is a cancer that should be cut out and countries that aren’t able to look after their own people well should even be thinking about exporting, if that means importing is harder it’s better than being slaves to the economies of other powers.
Wonder if inflation from welfare economies is the problem when it comes to growth and why we can't invite more immigration. Believe Milton Friedman had a few words about that
