      Yeah, not cool at all flinging the short ones back like he is trying to win a Frisbee tournament. They should be showing more respect for the lobsters, those undersized ones are their future profits

    I went to Maine 3 years ago on vacation. It was a dream trip. I can't wait to go back. We started at the south east corner and went up the coast to Bar Harbor. Wow, what a trip. Next time I want to see the timber country. I am in the timber business in Tennessee and I gotta see how they do it there. I ate at least 20 lobsters while I was there. I am impressed with the video Joe. Great Job Joe!!!

      Thank you! I hunt a lot in Timber country up north in Maine. Sadly the big timber days are gone up there but the logging operations are still impressive. Central Maine has a lot of big trees and the Arborists are very skilled taking them down in tough and tight situations.

    Joe one of the things you forgot to mention. Was that the buoy lines have a device on them that separates in case a whale should become entangled. The device is called a break away and separates when there is more then 600 lbs. of pull. There's also a size limit for keepers. Which is between 3 3/8th inches to 5 inches. Five inches and above get thrown back in if in state waters.

    Good video. I worked on a boat in Casco Bay a long time ago when the traps were wooden, and we were transitioning from wooden pegs to rubber bands. There nothing like swinging water logged and concrete weighted 4 footers all day long. Got to say....you guys handle the lobsters a lot rougher than we did. My captain would have keel hauled my ass if he saw me banging lobsters around like that.

    All of the shorts they are catching tells me the fishery is way in decline. Question: what's to keep the fish from nibbeling these lobsters and killing them before they get to the bottom?!?

    • @JoeHollandFishing
      @JoeHollandFishing  5 років тому +1

      Good questions, the shorts signify the strength of the lobster population. It takes seven years for a lobster to reach keeper size, so the lobsterman is actually seeing his future in every trap and with every short lobster he throws back. If they were not catching high numbers of shorts then the industry and population would be in decline. I’d say there is nothing to keep fish from eating the lobsters on the way down. I’d think they are safest on the bottom. They dart down very quickly and there are not a lot of predator fish in Maine waters of the lobster,

    125,000,000 pounds of lobster a year. 6000 licensed lobstermen. I always wonder why and how lobster never get wiped out. They say only a few survive out of all the eggs a female lays. A few can be 10-20% I guess. Imagine how many would exist if they had a 75-80% survival rate.
