Leah is a true teacher! Her way of speaking and explaining is clear and understandable. She radiates caring, warmth and patience. I wish all teachers were this way!
I was in construction for 8 years and really appreciate your knowledge and skill. I'm sure your instruction being as friendly and informative helps so many people! :D Keep up the great work
Nothing better than a fine woman teaching how to build a wall....even on a video posted in 2014.... Thank you so much @seejanedrill! Greetings from Chile!
Thx Leah, I always watch your take on building, and learn something that other videos have overlooked. Greatly appreciate the detail and care you put into the craft.
Wow! I've never seen anyone give step by step instructions so clearly and plainly. I even learned what a bottom and top and double plates are. I've always believed women are smarter than men. Thank you so much.
Love this lady....no unnecessary gabbing, straight to the point with simple instructions and clear stable videos. Nearly all the other DYI tuts look like they were done by out of work B movie producers who have imbibed in too much coffee......shaky,loud and bad music, echo sounds and in and out focus. Thanks Jane.
This is exactly the type of tutorial video I have been looking for since deciding to build a separeting wall in my long living room to create a second bedroom / study area. So easy to understand how it all works and why each part is important too. But also she delivers the information in a such a warm and supportive way that I now do really believe that I can do this. Thank you thank you thank you! x
I echo the positive sentiments of others viewers for your teaching style. I'm a pretty experienced builder, but am new to leading a framing build. I needed some knowledge and you served it up smart and clear. Thank you, Leah. It's probably hard to get any work done when you're responding to all the positive feedback you get!
I know I am a few years late since you’ve published this video but I would like to thank you for discussing penny nails. The last time I was in a Home Depot, no one could tell me where to find the penny nails. I eventually found them but not asingle employee, and I asked several people, knew what a penny nail was. Thank you. On behalf of all the women who were told that girls don’t belong in shop classes, your information and the way in which you present it is invaluable and greatly appreciated. (And, yes, this really happened. My high school guidance’ counselor refused to let me take shop classes. (Yes, this really happened and graduated high school in the late 1980s. Can you tell I’m sill bitter about it?) This is for you, Leah. 💜💙❤️
Thank you so much for demonstrating your skills so thoroughly and patiently. I wish to build a partition wall (since my husband seems too busy to get around to it anytime in the next 100 years!), and even with all the wealth of information out there, a lot of videos seem to take for granted that viewers already know what '16-inches-on-center' means, and what kind of nails to use and where to put them. Believe it or not, I had very little idea about how to start my wall project.- Your video was perfect for me (and lots of others like me, I'm sure), and I look forward to watching all your other videos too. Again, thank you Leah, for taking the time to share your knowledge with us!
When I was a little girl I only had my dad and Bob Vila to look up to lol I'm so glad to see you know what you're doing and explaining it so well, in all the projects I have done framing a wall isn't one of them this was very helpful, excited to change the layout of the house a bit.
Thank God! I've been through at least 20 videos trying to find out why the top plate is doubled in certain instances. And I am glad that I learned it from a woman! Thank you so much
Amidst the sea of vids that usually don't answer my questions, you are spot on and hit the mark. Your explanations are overly thorough. I hope you are able to spread your knowledge out to those who are new in the field. I have been an instructor for 12+ years; your demeanor and lock-step thoroughness is exactly what the learner needs. The "how" and "why" is all there. I would be happy to work under your shadow!
I really mean it when I say it, after watching dozens of videos and channels, this is the first time I understand how to build a partition or a wall Thank you Jane so much ♥ However, I would be grateful if you could post a video for us explaining how to connect two walls together in the corner ?
It's 2021, after watching so many videos on how to frame a wall, I not only know how to do it now, but I learned so much along the way. Thank you for being so sweet and informational in your video :)

I love you Leah! You are a wonderful teacher and thanks to you this almost 60 year old woman just put in my first partition wall. And it’s perfect! Thank you, thank you.
Awsome! When I first saw your video on wall fasteners I immediately subscribed! After this video I wanted to subscribe again. Thanks and keep up the great work for us novices!
You're a wonderful person! I bought a house to remodel. I was depending on my brothers to do most of the work for me. I watched tons of videos wanting to learn, but none were as good as yours. You explain everything in detail and make it easy. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you so much! Now I can do things and don't have to depend on my brothers so much and wait for their days off. They are glad I found you too...trust me!
I've watched a ton of videos on this, but none of them broke down the basics like this! This really helped me understand the foundations of what I needed to do without assuming I knew anything (which I don't lol). Now I feel way more confident about starting a project. Thank you!
As a beginner, I've watched every video I can find on UA-cam and in the first minutes, you answered more of my questions than anybody else has. Thank you for being so thorough and open with your knowledge!
another way to lay out stud center fast is to mark three quarter inch back from the 16,32,48,ect marks and mark an x to the right of it, then use ure speed square to transfer the mark from bottom plate to top plate, this way all you have to do is line up the edge of the stud with youre mark and you dont have to mark the centre of the stud, your 3/4 inch back will assure that youre stud centres are true,x marks the spot
I like this Using the 16inch centre mark rather than making mathematical adjustments for stud locations and marking the centre of studs to align eliminates errors for a beginner - so simple. I must say your voice has the warmth of a snuggly warm duvet on a cold winters night, great work.
Leah, I have been feeling a little intimidated when thinking about doing this in our home (basement), BUT NOW I know that I can do this. Our home again is 100 years old and this will add to our home. I am following your page and just wanted to let you know that YOU ROCK!!!! Watching your videos have made me feel that I can do anything because when you explain what to do, you do it GREAT! You are so thorough and you encouraging me makes me go and get what I need and then I accomplish it. I have saved so much money on our home. Thanks again! Much love from Ohio :)
Danielle Morris Danielle, this is so great to hear. This is the reason we started See Jane Drill to begin with! I'm so glad to hear from you. Sincerely, Leah
I NEVER leave comments and ur video just so happen to play after what I was originally watching yet you are able to capture my attention as I was all the way in the kitchen and before I even realize it I was learning to build a wall lol ...you are great with explaining things and I just wanted to comment and say you really seem like a just genuine good person and very informative great job on your video
if I place the studs centered at 16" increments, the 2 ends will not be 16" from the studs. The first stud will be off 3/4". You start at the left end of the plate, so you can't center that stud on the end. I was taught to measure 16" and then place the stud to the right of the mark. This will give you exactly 16" on center.
How does that way affect the application of drywall later? Wouldn't you want the edge of an 8 foot sheet of drywall to be flush with one end and cover only the first half of a stud at the other end (hit on the center of it)? It seems like it would be off center if you did it your way. You would then have to make a lot of unnecessary cuts each sheet of drywall. Same thing with the plywood on an exterior wall. It wouldn't be a problem if the wall was shorter than eight feet long, but most are longer.
Hi @@GeneJordan , When i worked construction we never used drywall shorter than the length of the wall. Having a butt/end joint in the middle of a wall is a no no. It is much more labor to finish properly. Order the propper length of drywall for the project. If you have a butt/ end joint in the middle of a wall it will virtually ALWAYS be visible/stand out in the finished product. That being said, I am a fan of Leah's teaching/video method. Never trying to make the video about HER, but about the subject. Thanks Leah!
Thanks for the lesson. I did rough framing for a year right out of HS, but nobody bothered to explain why we did things the way we did. It is very helpful to have it explained clearly, as I will be putting up partitions in my garage CORRECTLY now.
Always burn the first 3/4 inch, then measure 16 inch on center then your drywall will split the stud and the 48 inch location and 96 inch location and so on. And invest in a compressor and some air tools! Oh and a Laser.
Whether you go back 3/4 of an inch on every 16 or forward 3/4 of an inch and mark the left side, or mark the center, or go back 3/4 on the first and then move the tape, they all work. But some methods are much easier in production settings where other people need to read your plate layouts for L blocks and stuff, as long as YOU know where that stud lands for your marks, there are more ways than one to skin a cat.
Thank you for the helpful video and great clear explanation. However, I noticed that the first stud when starting the wall will never be 16" on center. If measured from center of first stud (edge of plates) the next one would actually be 15" on center. (after the first one all will be ok) I see that everyone in the industry does that. But if looking for the first stud from a wall measured like this,(and taking into account the drywall (1/2") the 16" on center measurement (on first stud) will always be off and the nail would miss by 1/2" past the stud. Any reason why this is not mentioned.
+Hector Munoz The reason it is done this way is because when you start the first piece of drywall at the first stud, the edge of the drywall does not start at the center of the first stud, but at the outside edge. But if you laid out subsequent studs as she described, the other edge of the drywall (assuming it is 8 feet long) will land on the center of the 7th stud.
Just what I am looking for. I need to turn the dining section of our open plan house into a bedroom for my daughter and partition is the quickest way to do. Quite simple and straight forward the way you presented it. Thank you, this is golden. Kuddos from South Africa.
+TheOpelkoenjas Yup, always have those steel toes on. Protect those feet from construction debris as well as sharp things that could impale. Work gloves and certainly protective eyewear as well. The right tools for the job much the job easier and safer.
You are fabulous. I want to build an extra bathroom and I want to do the framing and floors myself. I am getting my nerve up and you just helped me in a big, big, way. You have given me just enough to began. I think I just might contact the draftsmen, electricians, plumber and, the tile installer and get an idea of time, scheduling and cost. Before anyone says I won't save a lot on this type of job. I don't care. I want a project not a big savings.
Leah, I love how you take your time to explain every detail and never assume that will know what you are talking about. You are fantastic. I have a project coming up where I have a 1/2-way partition wall and I want to convert it to a fully framed wall from top to bottom and I know I can do it with your help.
+Casa Nova I think you have problems with maths here is the explanation : 16+16 separate them : 6+6 = 12 10+10 = 20 12+20=32 hopefully this will help you :)
I know this is an 8 yr old video but thank you so much. I've always wanted to do things on my own. no parents/mean husbands and 30 years late but your teaching style made me feel confident enough to try! I know it's a silly UA-cam video but it means a lot. 💜
Your channel has 561k subscribers.that is hard for me to understand. Well done on this video. Many first timers can learn the terminology used in Wall construction to include me. No annoying music. Just informative and to the point. I,want to build a temporary Walled shell, or Insert, to fit inside the old (1874) barn attached to the house we rent. Mainly for heating purposes.. when we move, the insert will have to be disassembled.
you are amazing at explaining this....many men have confused and ignored the simple details.but you know how we do..assume people already know.thank you for your time and effort to make this understandable. "liked" "subscribed"
Thanks Leah or “Jane”. I’ve come across your videos before in my projects over the years. Thank you for doing what you do. You are a valuable resource.
You are amazing and a great instructor! A person like myself that knows nothing about building learn a lot today. I like the step by step and explanations along the way.
Thank you so much for specifically showing us how to build because I always have a hard time just looking at it on videos or reading about it but to have someone to specifically show me how to walk through this I am so grateful ☺️
By far the best video on how to put up a wall. Thank you so much for teaching us nonconstruction folk how to do this. I have confidence now and don't feel like I need to hire someone to do this. God Bless!!
NZ Kia ora SeeJaneDrill ...Awsome Video. I'm a DIY person who works on many projects and have watched many videos on youtube. I can honestly say that your video's are the bomb and its not the projects that make your videos good but the way you explain to the viewers on how to go about a job and the close ups on the camera that make your videos standout. It just shows that you are aware of your viewers lack of understanding .....A true teacher I'm looking forward to many more video's from you ....thank you.
Excellent tutorial on framing the way you explain it is easy to understand good job...I have been in the construction trade for 5 decades and your teaching is very easy to understand
Absolutely awesome. This video was EXACTLY what I needed. I did a partition wall years ago, so I wasn't totally ignorant, but needed some very important, specific questions answered, and this video did it perfectly. Thank you!! Subscribed.
seejanedrill .. Leah, I'm framing up a partition wall tomorrow in a FINISHED room, to divide it in 2. Do the sides of the new wall need to be fixed into studs in the existing wall? There aren't any studs where my wife wants this wall to go, and she won't let me back it up because it'll make the space too small. I'm worried that only having the bottom plate nailed to the sub-flooring won't give it enough stability. The top plate and d sides would only be nailed into existing drywall. Thoughts?
I was looking for simple how to video to construct an interior wall and came across your video. It was fantastic and the way you explained it was the best I've seen for someone who is a beginner. I hope I can find more of you videos because you are amazing and gifted. Thank You.
I really like your instruction method, like many others have stated you have that teacher mentality. You explain it, show the concept and put it to use. You take care of many different peoples learning styles.
Leah!! You make me so happy I could cry. You give the best tutorials!! I am in the middle of a bathroom remodel and felt so in over my head! Thank you a thousand times over for sharing your expertise! You are amazing!
Hi Jessica, I'm glad to be of help. Thanks for writing to me, and good luck with your bathroom project. If you ever have any questions that you don't see the answer to, feel free to ask.
I am a licensed contractor. Great video. One detail is that when laying out a wall you do sometimes have to consider where you measure from. On a wall with window and door opening you may have to begin your layout 3/4" in from the end of the wall, if you want your window and doors in exactly the specd locations.
You are the best teacher. I've never been able to understand load bearing and non load bearing. I totally had an aha moment listening to your explanations. Thank you, Kathy
Thanks Leah, I'm about to close up a wall between my garage and kitchen. Your videos have been very helpful in past and I decided to watch this one again to psych myself up!
Very helpful video. I was intimidated by a partition I'm building tomorrow. Your teaching put me at ease. Very well explained! Thank you very much. Liked and subscribed.
Great instruction piece! I'm an Apprentice Carpenter, and I definitely learned a few pointers on Framing. You can apply your concepts to any size construction!
Leah, I have been doing my Weekend Warrior projects for years. I do a pretty good job but I still love to watch your videos. I always get something from it before I begin a project. Thanks for your simple, helpful videos!
Thank you! Aww I wanna give you a hug right now. I have absolutely NO experience in construction, but I do draw various floor plans as well as general outer building designs as well as interior designs. I'm planning on doing a miniature scale model of a house and this helps sooooo much, thank you!
Leah you really make me happy watching. You are an absolutely amazing teacher and really explain in great detail makes me feel very well informed and definitely prepared to build now! Thank you so so much I will definitely be back for more 🤗
Excellent as usual Leah. I like that you don't use annoying music, your explanations are great and thorough. You also have the camera zoom in to see better detail. I am building a closet in an existing room. Do you have any videos on that? I don't know how to space the header and the end boards from the other studs.
THIS LADY HAS THE PERFECT TEACHER ATTITUDE. SHE JUST RAIDEATES KINDNESS & LOVE + SHE KNOWS WHAT SHES TALKING ABOUT. SHE TAKES HER TIME. GREAT JOB.

You’re ‘gentle’ and non-patronising explanation is so re-assuring. I’m going to have a try, knowing you’re right with me here in the UK
Leah is anazing!
Thank you for the helpful video and great clear explanation.
However, I noticed that the first stud when starting the wall will never be 16" on center. If measured from center of first stud (edge of plates) the next one would actually be 15" on center. (after the first one all will be ok)
I see that everyone in the industry does that.
Might be wise to mention to wear steel toe shoes when hammering those nails in. Trust me, you'll thank me later. :D
just discovered your wisdom. Major ouch!
The_Monk_Weee! Hurts like a bitch, doesn't it. ^^ Been there, done that, learned from it. :D
Good luck with your project, Nikki!
Great vid but metric my lady. :). Best wishes from down under
Leah, I love how you take your time to explain every detail and never assume that will know what you are talking about. You are fantastic. I have a project coming up where I have a 1/2-way partition wall and I want to convert it to a fully framed wall from top to bottom and I know I can do it with your help.
16 + 16 = 32 !!!!
+Casa Nova I think you have problems with maths here is the explanation :
16+16
separate them :
6+6 = 12
10+10 = 20
12+20=32
hopefully this will help you :)
+Khalid Aiman
thats common core maths

+RobertosLife thank you, Roberto, I appreciate your kind comments! :)
God Bless!!
you're welcome, Julio, and thanks for your comments. Good luck with your project!
It just shows that you are aware of your viewers lack of understanding .....A true teacher
I'm looking forward to many more video's from you ....thank you.
soultrainn You're welcome, soultrainn and thank you for your kind compliments!! I'm glad you're here!
Thank you!! Subscribed.
you're welcome, Joseph, and thanks!
seejanedrill ..
Thoughts?
Hello Leah. I have to say I thoroughly enjoy watching yiur tutorials. They are so informative and very concise and easy too follow. Thank you.
I was looking for simple how to video to construct an interior wall and came across your video. It was fantastic and the way you explained it was the best I've seen for someone who is a beginner. I hope I can find more of you videos because you are amazing and gifted. Thank You.
you're welcome, Manny, and thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you found us!
one of the best how to video i have ever watch,i agree you make a great teacher...thanks from an old man from canada
+Kathryn Gutierrez you're welcome, Kathy!! Glad to be of help. :)
Was that so hard? I have been going through tons of videos on youtube to get half the tutorial you just gave. Thank you, you're a very good teacher.
Thanks, Big M, I really appreciate you saying so! And I'm glad my video worked out for you.:)
Just simply the best teacher on UA-cam. I’ve been building things for years and she always shows me at least one new thing.
Brilliant! You simplified my project and saved my family a heap of cash. Thanks you Jane.
Glad to hear it, Rod.
Thanks Leah, I'm about to close up a wall between my garage and kitchen. Your videos have been very helpful in past and I decided to watch this one again to psych myself up!
you're welcome, and good luck with your project!
😉
Love how patient you are and the thought you put into your explanations
Very helpful video. I was intimidated by a partition I'm building tomorrow. Your teaching put me at ease. Very well explained! Thank you very much. Liked and subscribed.
Great instruction piece! I'm an Apprentice Carpenter, and I definitely learned a few pointers on Framing. You can apply your concepts to any size construction!

Thank you! Aww I wanna give you a hug right now. I have absolutely NO experience in construction, but I do draw various floor plans as well as general outer building designs as well as interior designs. I'm planning on doing a miniature scale model of a house and this helps sooooo much, thank you!
19cosmo91 You're welcome! Thanks for writing, and I'm so glad my video was helpful to you! :)

This is the most informative video I've seen I always hear 16 inches on center and I had no idea what that meant
I feel so connected to you. Your gifted in teaching. Overall, your quality speaks for itself.
+dfelixrx7 thanks!
Leah you really make me happy watching. You are an absolutely amazing teacher and really explain in great detail makes me feel very well informed and definitely prepared to build now! Thank you so so much I will definitely be back for more 🤗

This is the first video of yours that I saw. You are very knowledgeable and this is an excellent educational DIY video! Thanks so much for posting it!
you're very welcome, welcome to our channel!
Great clear instructions. I love how you explain things out and not merely start showing how it's done. Awesome video and very informative! Thank you!

You are an exceptional teacher. I sincerely enjoyed your video! Can't wait to watch more because you will be helping me to fix up my first home!
Marci Del Mastro Thank you, Marci! :)
Excellent as usual Leah. I like that you don't use annoying music, your explanations are great and thorough. You also have the camera zoom in to see better detail. I am building a closet in an existing room. Do you have any videos on that? I don't know how to space the header and the end boards from the other studs.
You are a fantastic teacher. I know the steps on how to do most of this stuff but your videos add to my confidence level. Keep it up.
+Kevin Lersch thanks, Kevin!
Best instructor on YT.
