    Regarding noise-reduction: I know that there exist tape, that has aluminum, copper or some other metal on one side and sticks on the other side. I've used some of this tape before and it did help me a lot in my own made radio.

      Thanks for the tip! Yeah, I didn't have any of that on-hand so I had to cobble together my own with aluminum foil and electrical tape. :)

    Man your videos are so clean ! You explain everything, the rythme of your voice, the cuts and everything are perfect. The image is good, the music background is great, not to loud, just so we can hear it, you're fast frowarding the long parts, and finally, you give people other options and you stay open to suggestions and upgrades such as the custom parts made by forum members ! Really great job mate, i hope you'll start a new project after this one ! And by the way, have you got a training for what you do ? like a degree in electrical engineering or something like this , or is it just a hobby ?

    • @wermy

      Hey thanks! That means a lot. :)

    Hi! I love the tutorials and I am starting to build mine later this week. I had a quick question about the option to skip the cartridge input. If you were to plug it directly into the raspberry pi board do you still need to hook all the wires up from the cartridge reader to the raspberry pi? Could you just glue it in so you can pop non working cartridges in and out for cosmetic looks?

    Hey, I read the guide on your site and I was curious - can you get away with using any GPIO pin for the mono audio? I'm using the one you mentioned for input, so I was curious.
    I'm using a GBA shell, and plan to take apart a USB audio adapter to use for sound - I was originally going to just stick the jack in the shell, but after hearing this, I'd love to add a speaker, and the GBA one works fine.

    Hi Wermy! I was just going to do a very similar project as well and stumbled upon your video series: really excellent work here. Now what I was trying to solve before finishing mine is one thing I could not find an elegant solution so far nowere:how about shutting down the gameboy zero? I mean there is need of some circuit that can on a press of a button/switch send a shutdown -h now to the retropi os and then after some delay cut off power otherwise batteri would still be drained (not to speak that just cutting out power is also bad for the sd on the first place..)-> any ideas?

    • @wermy
      @wermy  8 років тому

      Hey there,
      Thanks! Glad you're enjoying it. In my build, I'm just using the menu item for "Shutdown System" in RetroPie (which I presume just calls something like 'sudo shutdown -h now'). A second or two after the screen turns off, I turn off the switch. That's worked well for me, I haven't seen any text about the dirty shutdown bit being on whenever it boots.
      If you're looking for a more comprehensive solution there are some cool things being worked on in the forums you should check out -- specifically: sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=97 for a software solution, and sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=46 where one user is working on a pretty cool custom board that lets you call the shutdown command with the push of a button.

  • @goldennboy1989

    Is it necessary to create the SD card cartridge if you are OK with leaving the SD card buried inside the gameboy? I have a retropie system that I built from a pi 2 and I have it set up for wi-fi and just plug in a wi-fi dongle to add/remove games. Could I do that with the Gameboy Zero too? It seems like it could save a lot of steps and you could still insert a blank cartridge to fill the space.

    Is there a way for a RasPi to read an actual cartridge instead of a SD card?
    I'm trying to find out if I can restore my old GameBoy Color with modern parts to keep that retro feel. I want to spare as many of the original parts as possible, but the control board is completely bust, hence the need to replace it.
    I also want to add the SD reader as an option (along with the extra buttons this project has), but the main thing should be to use it as if it was the original.

    I don't understand why you wouldn't just glue in the cartridge connector for looks, but just the SD-Card reader already on the raspberry zero. Why go through all this trouble to make this when it won't even work on a regular gameboy game anyway? All the games will have to be put on the SD-Card anyway. Also, with the new zero W, you can connect to wifi and download your games anyway.

    • @wermy
      @wermy  8 років тому

      I haven't tried it yet but I'm told you can use the GBA cartridge reader from a DS Lite, you just have to trim off a couple bits of plastic. Like this one: www.ebay.com/itm/Nintendo-DS-DS-Lite-GBA-game-cartridge-card-reader-slot-Repair-Part-/172090308991?hash=item281161b97f:g:NTAAAOSwRH5XK77l
      As for the Pi 3, the most I'd recommend is a Pi 2 for this. Pi 3 sucks down a LOT of power and gets very very hot.

      @wermy  8 років тому

      I did have some problems initially like that. I added some shielding and tried a few different SD cards until I found one that worked. Haven't had any issues at all since then. It is very fiddly though, I will say that. There is a guy in the forums who is selling a pre-made cartridge->SD card board that has some filtering built-in that makes it much less picky.
