Seriously, Alex, you are the most thorough reviewer hands down. You really helped me choose the right car awhile back. Now I am planning to get the Toyota; just waiting on that V6 review!
Sexy Hybrid ! Powerful, Great value, stylish looks, and lots of standard features. Love that deep red paint job looks great. This doesn't look like a hybrid at all u thought it was the gas sport model. Very well done Toyota the Camry will remain king.
James Russo it looks like a nice car. Sad to see the v6 go though. They seem to be moving in a ford like direction with turbocharged engines. Consistent with their decline in reliability.
It's crazy that there's no rear vents in the model you've shown. I just don't understand why it's not standard yet. As someone who lives in the desert, it's such a huge benefit to get a/c to the back of the cabin, especially with kids in the back.
Of course they would but what could it be? Maybe a couple hundred? so for example $24500->$24850... The small amount increase per car vs not being available at all.....I'd pay for it in a heartbeat! It's a HUGE convenience for those in the back seat and cools or heats the whole cabin more efficiently. I think every car should have rear vents, well passenger cars anyways. Maybe not necessary for sport orientated cars.
Interesting. I test drove a 2018 Camry SE the other day and it had rear vents. Perhaps something Hybrid-specific isn't allowing them to run piping back for the vents?
The best looking Toyota Camry in 10 years, the biggest mistake they made with this is not having the lithium-ion battery in all hybrid trims. I hope that changes in the next year, styling wise it does share some nods to previous generations however it's exceeds all of those past generations and then some. The Camry has grow up and finally looks like it's more expensive brother the Lexus ES. Lastly we need ventilated seats Toyota so make that happen!
Ive read somewhere toyota said theres not enough research on longevity of lithium in hybrid use. Nickel batteries can last hundreds of thousands of miles in good health for decades. They might just be testing the waters with lithium in the base models.
This was one of the best car reviews I have ever watched in the boring hybrid world. Obviously top gear is about as good as it gets for a car review. This review though is highly informative and straight to the point. Thank You.
Great video. Love the multiple camera shots. Agree with the ratings. Especially cabin noise; I have the SE with 18” tires. A little loud on the interstate. Other than that, it’s a wonderful car.
So, the car is "more aggressive" for a Toyota, but since you cannot deactivate the stability control it is not super aggressive. Still a nice improvement for Toyota. Not ready to say they build excitement, but this sounds better. Thanks for the review, Alex.
"You'd have to get $2000 dollars off that Malibu to have it equal the value..." I don't think I know anyone who has paid within 2k of MSRP on a Chevy."
Honda Accord It certainly has this thing is HUGE. But so too is the Honda Accord today. I'm disgusted with this trend. The mid 80s Accord and Camry are SMALLER than todays Civic and Corolla. I don't like HUGE vehicles.
"I don't like HUGE vehicles." -- Is someone holding a gun to your head stopping you from buying a Civic? And btw, judging from your comment, you must be really short if you consider Camry to be huge.
Stereo Typist Problem is that the Fiesta is not available anymore in the USA, at least not starting next model year. Yaris is well screwed together but very spartan...much more so than a Accord or Camry from the late 80s and onward.
mountainhobo Problem is the new Civic is too big as well. The current Civic is bigger than the early-mid 90s Accord! Fit is about the same size as the early Accord but very cheap feeling.
Just an FYI, the heads up display is not related to the v6 model. It’s standard on the XLE hybrid, and available on the XLE and XSE with the standard 4 cylinder engine.
I say good riddance. That stalk has been out of date for the last 25 years. Everyone else has the controls on the wheel. Its about time Toyota joined the 21st century.
Ron Shaw I mean, if it works it works. Why does it matter if it's a "dated" design? Personally, I kind of like having separate places for certain controls. Some steering wheels and center stacks have gotten really busy in the last few years. I know Toyota gets a lot of flack for not always being willing to adapt but I've liked that they don't change things for the sake of changing things. Idk, different strokes I guess
Ron Shaw Except the stalk works better. And is the natural place your finger tips end up being.. Every steering wheel controlled CC.. I've had to LOOK at the wheel to find the button. The stalk was much more tactile.. Not an improvement in my opinion. Sad to see that go.
Scott Watkins I talk to my Uber drivers in seattle. They all drive the Prius because of the gas mileage. They say those ugly things are bulletproof with the reliability.
I really like the new Camry and Accord. They look fantastic, offer plenty of features, and benefit from typical Honda and Toyota reliability. They go slightly different routes but they do most things pretty well
I want the XLE Hybrid but don't want the Ni-MH battery. If I'm buying a new car, I want the latest of battery technology. Don't get why the base hybrid model got the newer Li-Ion battery but the more expensive trims didn't.
What difference does it really make? It's not a plugin, it is not important how far you can go on EV alone if you need to charge it from burning petrol...
Doesn't make sense to me. I'm thinking if I go Camry Hybrid, I have to wait til the mid-cycle refresh with the new Li-Ion battery. Wish it had fog lights, larger driver sun visor also. Drives like a dream though on the test drive.
Alex on Autos this is disappointing. I remember growing up the 1990s Camrys were extremely quiet. What are the quietest midsize sedans available now? Passat?
I bought the 2018 se Hybrid model off the showroom floor. I enjoy the car and believe me it gets a lot of great comments and looks. It is comfortable and the trunk is crazy big. The only downside is the A/C SUCKS!. I live in a very hot area Fresno and the battery charging system for the electric motor is so good it doesn't allow the gas engine to push the R/4 around in city driving so it doesn't stay cool as it should. Freeway, the A/C works great! I could be wrong with why I think the A/C doesn't work very well in city driving.. Thoughts?
Interesting points you bring up. Let's agree to revisit this issue in 15 years and see who was right. I say 15 years because we know that Nickel batteries last that long. BTW I would also swap out the oversized, bling wheels on the upper end Camry hybrids for the same sized wheels that feature on the base model.
Reviewers are saying that the 2018 Toyota Camry's steering is too heavy when in sport mode. The Eco, Normal & Sport Modes are only available on the '18 Camry Hybrids & the'18 Camry 6-cyl.
Kaityn Kuang also nobody buys an Impala (at least where I live) for personal use. They are generally used as fleet or rental vehicles. As for sleeper, your hot heads in their BMW 330i or Audi A4 may not expect to be dusted in a Camry.
i have the 2018 Camry xle hybrid and i get over 58mpg... dont know why you are only getting in the 40mpg with the se however my gas miles did increase after about 8mos from the 40s to the 50s maybe thats it?
What’s Toyota thinking ? No heated steering wheel ? How can you have it on the Corolla, RAV4 and Highlander but not the Camry (gas or hybrid). Sedans in same class from other manufacturers all are equipped with heat steering wheel.
Considering my 92 Camry LE V6 I had made 195 horsepower and the new Camry 2.5 L makes 206 that's pretty impressive, now I bet the 4-cylinder makes power off the line and mid-range and then probably slums off in high RPM I'm assuming, wonder what the weight of this new Camry is?
These engines don't work that way with the cam phasing they have implemented. Power is consistent throughout the rev band - it's normally aspirated so no weird peaks.
Good review as always Alex. I picked up a non-hybrid SE 2 weeks ago. It had NO LED tail lights as you suggested in this review. It's only a regular bulb where the brake light is located and it serves as both the brake and night time lights!. The rest of the tail light assembly doesn't light up at all like the XSE or XLE piped LED display but is rather just a big reflector? I wonder if it will be possible to swap mine for the XSE tail light assembly? This bothers me greatly and any ideas on how to connect LEDs in the tail lights for the regular non-hybrid SE will be greatly appreciated.
Excellent video, Alex! I also was disappointed that most of the 2018-2019 Camry SE tail light assembly is just a reflector unlike the XSE which has a string of LEDs to light it up. I just got my 2019 SE (not hybrid) and need to pull up behind it in another car at night to see how well it reflects. I'm sure it's way too expensive to swap out with XSE tail lights and really it's not a big deal when you think about it. Overall I'm very pleased with my new Camry SE and am so glad I went with it over the LE model.
Do you know why the 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid's engine holds 13 gallons of gas rather than 17 like the previous year? That's a decrease over 120 miles per fill up. The same thing is happening with the new 2019 Toyota Avalon; the gas tank capacity shrank from 17 to 13 gallons. The Honda Accord Hybrid's gas tank capacity decreased too! The 2017 model's engine holds 15.8 gallons but the 2018 model's engine holds 12.8 gal. It's a decrease of 774 miles per fill up to 601! Do you know why is this happening? None of the reviews have addressed this yet. Thanks.
Hauling less gas probably helps up the MPG. And better MPG helps sell hybrids more than tank size. It might also help them meet some higher gov't standard. This is a guess on my part.
Wide tires give better mpg, better handling in corners, and better braking but give more cabin noise, True or false? 2017 Ford fusion plug in has Handling, Ride & Cabin noise all score "A" (i don't know if hybrid-only model takes same scores). 2018 Toyota Camry SE hybrid has better Acceleration, Braking, Fuel eco, same handling, not too bigger legroom but bigger headroom & trunk.
really love your video's thanks. looking forward to the v6 camry review and upcoming accords. i'm planning to buy either the camry or accord and am torn. your videos really help in the decision making.
Correction duel exhaust has been on the XSE for a long time with Camry that’s nothing new. Some XSE models don’t have dual exhaust if they are 4 cylinder.
At 5:50: The LE model uses a 1.0 kWh Lithium battery; the SE and XLE use a 1.6 kWh Nickel battery, which should be about twice as heavy. So EV range is less in the SE, not greater. It is the weight difference and tires that are the main reasons for the difference in mileage, not driving in EV mode. Despite marketing claims by Toyota, EV mode has little to no effect on mileage. The energy comes from the same place, just deferred. That is, until you run out of capacity in the battery, which is more likely in the SE. And not measured in the EPA mileage estimates.
@@mikegarcia7452 My lease was up so I traded it in, but never had a single problem with it. Loved, loved, loved that car! Traded it in for a new Prius Prime, which I also love and you can't beat the PHEV for fuel consumption, but only good things to say about the Camry SE hybrid - looked great, drove great, great on gas - fantastic car.
Great review as always Alex! Could you please get in a review of a 2017 Toyota Prius V Five? I know it's the last year of the V and I'm thinking about picking one up. Would really appreciate it.
Hi Alex! Nice review as always, but aren't the new Prius and C-HR the only Toyotas so far that share the TNGA platform with the Camry? And that the European Auris, which is the same as the Corolla iM, is still on the old C platform?
Hey Alex. Love your reviews! Could you possibly review a 2017 Toyota Prius V Five with the Advanced Technology Package? I need your review before I purchase.
Just came back from an 800 km trip. 58.8 mpg and fun in mountain driving. Lovely car!
Which trim level do you have getting that mileage
Seriously, Alex, you are the most thorough reviewer hands down. You really helped me choose the right car awhile back. Now I am planning to get the Toyota; just waiting on that V6 review!
I've NEVER seen him do an underbody inspection like SavageGeese.
That proves your hypothesis wrong.
Sexy Hybrid !
Powerful, Great value, stylish looks, and lots of standard features. Love that deep red paint job looks great. This doesn't look like a hybrid at all u thought it was the gas sport model. Very well done Toyota the Camry will remain king.
Alex is by far the best Car reviewer on UA-cam to date !
"I was not able to put a gallon of milk inside, but a half gallon would fit." Always the best dry humor.
Toyota really did a good job with this car and I love that you can get the hybrid in any trim level. Your move Honda, that Accord better be good.
James Russo it looks like a nice car. Sad to see the v6 go though. They seem to be moving in a ford like direction with turbocharged engines. Consistent with their decline in reliability.
BCCHSMD yeah their reliablity is definitely going to take a hit with those new motors.
James Russo You don't get the hybrid in XSE
I also enjoyed you comparing them to the other vehicles! Literally helps me decide what to get.
It's crazy that there's no rear vents in the model you've shown. I just don't understand why it's not standard yet. As someone who lives in the desert, it's such a huge benefit to get a/c to the back of the cabin, especially with kids in the back.

Interesting. I test drove a 2018 Camry SE the other day and it had rear vents. Perhaps something Hybrid-specific isn't allowing them to run piping back for the vents?
The XLE and XSE hybrid models do have rear vents. It is unfortunate the more high tech system in the LE hybrid model does not have rear vents.
I just drove nearly every SE that have and there are NO vents. Not sure what you were driving.
Thanks Alex. The best auto reviews in the business. The 2017 corolla scored 71 dB.
Toyota is not messing around. They have a winner with this new Camry model.
The best looking Toyota Camry in 10 years, the biggest mistake they made with this is not having the lithium-ion battery in all hybrid trims. Alex is really hardworking, so many car test video.
Cabin noise is such a buzz kill. Did not expect a newly improved car to be louder than previous generation.
Mahesh ?
I agree 100%, car companies need to pay more attention to cabin noise
I mean it’s an SE variant, so it’s designed to be a bit sportier meaning the ride won’t be that soft as the LE variants
So, the car is "more aggressive" for a Toyota, but since you cannot deactivate the stability control it is not super aggressive. Still a nice improvement for Toyota. Not ready to say they build excitement, but this sounds better. Thanks for the review, Alex.

That might not be a bad deal. No one pays anywhere close to retail for a Malibu.
In my opinion, Chevy is getting crazy with their pricing.
Cory Stansbury people know the resale value on them will be close to nothing within a couple years
At least resale is better than a Chrysler lol

+pedro fernandez the others got quieter and the Camry stayed still
Alex on Autos this is disappointing. I remember growing up the 1990s Camrys were extremely quiet. What are the quietest midsize sedans available now? Passat?

9:15 Was it intentional that the car was facing South East (SE), when you said SE trim?
I love the Interior in the 2018 Camry, very upscale.

Better looking than current year imho.
Fantastic review as always Alex! I cant wait for the V6 review :)
With those mpg numbers is there any reason to get the Prius?
The Camry with over-sized wheels achieves 10 mpg less than the Prius. Over the life of the vehicle that is a large margin.
Right Lane Hog and the LE trim?
Better MPG with the LE but then you are forced to 'experiment' with the Lithium battery rather than the time tested Nickel batteries.
Interesting points you bring up. Let's agree to revisit this issue in 15 years and see who was right. I say 15 years because we know that Nickel batteries last that long. Reviewers are saying that the 2018 Toyota Camry's steering is too heavy when in sport mode. The Eco, Normal & Sport Modes are only available on the '18 Camry Hybrids & the'18 Camry 6-cyl.
I really would like your view on the new XSE V6 Alex. 300hp in a Camry sounds like the ultimate sleeper in a long time.
Why? The Impala has over 300HP and you don't see too many people dying to get their hands on one.
impala is bigger and heavier and only has 6 spd
Kaityn Kuang also nobody buys an Impala (at least where I live) for personal use. They are generally used as fleet or rental vehicles.
