Thanks Roy! To your awesome vid just replaced mine on a 2014 Sienna, same stupid rusty too hinge broke, door wouldn't open, PITA!! CBA wanted $500+ to put a new unpainted one on! Found a paint match door + spring & gas cap on ebay $60! 😉, Toyota rivets $18, Akktol 1/4" rivet gun on Azon $25. NOTE: Exercise patience drilling out rivets, I drilled out the inner mandrel hole & punched it thru first, then stepped up the bit size until I could just grab the caps with pliers, squeeze & pull out. You do NOT want to make those holes bigger than 1/4" or the new rivets won't hold. Easy job tho, saved a bundle thanks to Roy! 👍🏽
Thanks Roy. Perfect video. Best I've seen yet. I may try this on my 2014 Sienna. Top hinge just broke yesterday. 105400 miles and she still drives like a dream. I can't believe that Toyota is still making they're fuel doors this cheap though.
I have a 2014 as well. It's really agitating to see Toyota make such a rookie move. The rivets are fine, it's the stupid side door safety that's springs so hard that it pushes the rivets to it's limits and breaking them.
It’s getting up there and super stoked about it! I got a lot of my tools many years ago, as long as they work I keep using them! Thanks for always watching 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Good eyes. The gas door comes painted black primer from the toyota dealer. Later I took the vehicle to the bodyshop to get the door painted the same color as the body. Thank you for watching 👍👍👍
Great video I have the same issue on my 2018 Sequoia. Toyota should have never changed from the 2002 Sequoia cap I never had an issue with that one and had 260k miles on it.
Excellent video! I am going to replace fuel lid on my 2013 Sequoia and it is pretty much the same. Roy, what happens to those fallen rivets? Are they keep rattling forever inside the body frame or will fall off? Thank you!
my fuel door on 2017 sienna xle tilt down more a little so it's hard to open it. Everything checked out good except the alignment. Can you do a video on how to adjust the gap space evenly from left to right?
The reason the hinge broke on my 2014 Sienna is that black button at the top (near the top hinge) is too hard to push in and puts too much strain on the top hinge. Is there any way you know of to make that button easier to push in?
What I’ve noticed is that it’s actually the pin getting rusted so it breaks, what I do with my vans is that I lubricate the pin right from the get so. Thanks for watching 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Funnest part about this issue is that when the gas cap is too far out, the sliding passenger door won't open. very confusing! haha. I guess its some sort of fail safe to ensure the gas cap is closed (because if the door opened you would have a heck of a problem where you couldn't shut the door because the gas door is acting like a door stop.
This just happened on my 2014 Sienna, 🤬, was wondering if that black safety button can be cut/sanded/ground down about 1/16th" or so to reduce the strain on the hinge? May be able to save existing door with some JB weld epoxy..?? Any thoughts? Thx
I just found out that the fuel door is included in Toyota's extended 10 year warranty on the power sliding door assembly. I took it to the dealer, they ordered in a new fuel door, painted it, and called me when it was ready to install. It's like new now, at no charge, God bless you Toyota!
Obviously after 8 to 10 years the hinge just breaks, it really is a bad design. That button that allows the door to open is very hard on the spring mechanism which is why the top one breaks.
So there is no way to do this without removing the rivets? (you can't take out and install the pin because of the angle I guess?) You didn't show putting the pin back in when it was off, is that difficult or does it slide right in ?
@@jasm.5823 Yeah I ended up buying one and surprised it all came as one piece just drill out old gas door rivets remove it from the vehicle, put new one on two rivets and done, pretty awesome, granted getting a color match on the matte black to vehicle black was tough on a 9 year old van haha. It works but you can tell its not quite right. You can't seem to buy them by color just generic black and paint to match.
I used the “spring” that’s made for it as shown in the video, it’s actually more of a rectangular plastic piece though. I got them both through the Toyota dealership. Thanks for watching 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
If you're installing rivets for the first time, learn from my mistake. Before you start pressing the pliers together, you might want to tape up or somehow cover the area around the fuel door. Because the moment the pliers break off the tip of the rivet, it kicks off with force and you could hit the car and chip the paint. Which is what happened to me 😢 You've been warned.
The top rivet head popped off on my 2004 toyota camty fuel door. I asked the dealer about just getting the rivet put back in and they told me I need to replace the entire door assembly, get it painted to match, yadda, yadda. Am I crazy or can I just buy a rivet and refasten it like you did here? I have been using the door with just the bottom rivet holding the door in place with the lock, when driving.
Yeah this repair would be hundreds at the dealership, you can buy everything here for what 60 dollars with shipping? Dealership wanted to charge 40 dollars as a "diagnostic" fee just to look at it. Bunch of rip off artists.
You can do exactly what he did , drill the heads off of the rivets a bit then use a chisel and hammer to pry them off. I took off my rivets with just a chisel and a hammer , no drill needed just elbow grease

My hinge broke on my 2015 Sienna and I just hit 65K. Very cheap
Same 2017 82,000 miles top hindge broke😢
Literally exactly how my 2018 sienna 104,000 miles door failed. Thanks for the video!
Great work Roy.
Thanks my guy! I’ll be doing this tomorrow. Thanks for your help. -Pennsylvania
thanks for the helpful video. Now to just get a rivet gun and I'm good to go

Nice job on that gas door I like the fact you still use the old plug-in drill like I do.

Great job, I was gonna weld that piece but that is easier and cheaper.
It's the wring color but u get a 👍 for the ALOHA!

What about those rivets that were knocked back in? Do you not hear them rattling around?

you would think Toyota would make this a stronger part, its been breaking like this for 20 years.

At the very least just make the brackets two 10mm bolts, the tundras use bolts to hold the hinge. No one wants to drill

The pin was part of the old door. The new black door is a complete unit.

Hello Mr Roy where did you buy the gas door spring? Thank you
1/4” rivet, is the width or the length of tip part?
why did you use the gas door spring? is the door not strong to hold? can you post a link where you got it?

What can I use if I don’t own a rivet gun? I’m confused as to what is actually happening during that step.
Hello my friend. It is the same for A 2017 Toyota Highlander?
what is the size of the blind revits please
Thank you sir....👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

What size rivet did you use?
1/4in rivets bought it from the dealership, quality is a lot more durable and better. Thanks for watching 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽

Nothing- just leave them in
If the rivets are pushed inside, won't they just rattle about inside the car panel?
Terbaikkk
My 2002 Lexus es300 has one rivet holding the gas door😂 will be doing this soon
I'm replacing my 2012 Sienna fuel door for the second time in 3 years. It is a terrible design. It fails regularly.
Hi Roy could I pay you to do mines?
